Možná zrovna někde relaxuje – a i my se máme uvolnit. Kapitoly I. Americká filozofie: Žádná věda! Jen život. We will be discussing the book Master slave husband wife: an epic journey from slavery to freedom DB112758 by Ilyon Woo. NLS Annotation Master slave husband wife: an epic journey from slavery to freedom DB112758 Author: Woo, Ilyon Reading Time: 12 hours, 59 minutes Read by: Janina Edwards, Leon Nixon Subjects: Bestsellers, Biography, U.S. History, African American Topics “The remarkable true story of Ellen and William Craft, who escaped slavery through daring, determination, and disguise, with Ellen passing as a wealthy, disabled White man and William posing as “his” slave. In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in American history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding out in the open on steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North. Along the way, they dodged slave traders, military officers, and even friends of their enslavers, who might have revealed their true identities. The tale of their adventure soon made them celebrities, and generated headlines around the country. Americans could not get enough of this charismatic young couple, who traveled another 1,000 miles criss-crossing New England, drawing thunderous applause as they spoke alongside some of the greatest abolitionist luminaries of the day—among them Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. But even then, they were not out of danger. With the passage of an infamous new Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, all Americans became accountable for returning refugees like the Crafts to slavery. Then yet another adventure began, as slave hunters came up from Georgia, forcing the Crafts to flee once again—this time from the United States, their lives and thousands more on the line and the stakes never higher. With three epic journeys compressed into one monumental bid for freedom, Master Slave Husband Wife is an American love story—one that would challenge the nation's core precepts of life, liberty, and justice for all—one that challenges us even now.” — Provided by publisher. Many Christians have noticed that ‘PRIDE month' is more subdued this year. While this is good, we also need to be careful. Our goal is to see God's law instituted throughout all of society, not just to make things a little less ghey. Many who uphold portions of God's law, such as ‘thou shalt not murder', cringe when they read God's prohibition and punishment of Sodomy. The reality, though, is that God is good and loving in everything that He does, and his laws about homosexuality are both righteous and they protect society from great harm. Tune in now as we discuss how America has abandoned God's good standard. SOURCES: [1] Rushdoony, R.J,, “The Institutes of Biblical Law, Vol.1”, pg 432. There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down with one of the innovative thinkers in compliance, Carsten Tams to find out what is on his mind regarding compliance. I recently had the opportunity to do so on the topic of making compliance training memorable. Over this short five-part series we will introduce the problem and challenges and then provide you with four proven strategies for success in your compliance training. In this Episode 3, we discuss the concept of experiential learning as a gamechanger to enhance overall learning scope, motivation, retention and transfer; emphasizing its importance over conventional learning methods. Experiential learning means learning by doing. When we are passive learners in front of a screen, clicking on the forward button or checking boxes, learning remains shallow. Experiential ethics learning is not simply about feeding abstract information about an ethics topic into learners' minds. It is instead about the tight coupling of thinking with doing. An experiential learning activity is about posing a problem that is relevant to the learner. It is then up to the learner to tap into their existing knowledge, to use their ingenuity and creative problem-solving skills to find a feasible solution for the problem at hand.   Using practical examples, Carsten explains how experiential learning engages learners in problem-solving and hands-on experiences, leading to better retention and application of knowledge. They explore the historical roots of the concept, drawing from thinkers like Aristotle, Confucius, John Dewey, and modern cognitive research. The discussion also covers ways to implement experiential learning in organizational settings, addressing potential concerns about documenting these methods for regulatory compliance. Highlights and Key Issues Discussed  ·      Introduction to Experiential Learning in Compliance and Ethics Training ·      Exploring the Basics of Experiential Learning ·      Applying Experiential Learning in Compliance and Ethics ·      Historical Context and Theoretical Foundations of Experiential Learning ·      Practical Implementation and Documentation for Compliance Professionals  Resources Carsten Tams on LinkedIn Emagence Consulting For Additional Reading ·      Dewey, J. Martha Nussbaumová, jedna z předních filosofek současnosti ve své nové knize Spravedlnost pro zvířata tvrdí, že je na čase revidovat náš vztah ke zvířatům. I takzvaně divokým tvorům otravujeme vzduch, moře, lesy. Kapitoly  I. Freud's Last Session: His Debate with C.S. Lewis & What Each Believed about Religion and Evil

Few people have shaped the twentieth century's understanding of Christianity more than its opponent, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), and its advocate C. S. Lewis (1898-1964). Lewis, an adult convert from atheism, made his career as an Oxford don, but became well-known as a Christian apologist. Freud developed a revolutionary psychological theory (psychoanalysis), which established his career, started a movement, and ensured his titanic influence on Western thought. But he employed that theory against religion in general and Christianity in particular, dismissing them as neurotic. In 2003, Armand Nicholi published The Question of God. C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life. Alas, the film does not reach its level of fairness or rigor. Freud's case against Lewis hinges on two claims: (1) that religion is an illusion) and (2) the problem of evil. Religion is merely wish-fulfillment that represents one's inability to face the evils of life without some supernatural consolation. First, the idea that Christianity is an “illusion” because it merely projects an idealistic idea of a father onto a godless universe has been refuted repeatedly. Simply because we desire X strongly is no evidence that X does not exist. Rather, it might be evidence that X does exist. In the film, Lewis is not given adequate room to develop the idea. C. S. Lewis developed his argument from yearning in his famous essay “The Weight of Glory.” We all experience a deep sense of yearning or longing for something that the present natural world cannot fulfill—something transcendently glorious. In his autobiography he recounts several experiences of this throughout his life, in which he sensed something wonderful beyond his grasp. These were fleeting but invaluable moments, which he called the experience of “joy.” They were not encounters with God and did not directly result in his conversion. Instead, they were indicators that the everyday world was not a self-enclosed system; a light from beyond would sometimes peek through the “shadow lands.” This thirst, which is intensified by small tastes of transcendence, indicates the possibility of fulfillment.[i] Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger; well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim; well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire; well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my early pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly desires were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.[ii] Second, Freud's attack on Christianity through the problem of evil has been met in various ways by Christian philosophers and apologists over the ages. Lewis's approach in the film was muted, but a careful reading of The Problem of Pain does much to address the matter rationally, although I part ways with Lewis understanding of “free will,” given that I am a compatibilist on human agency—something he did not even consider as a possibility.[iii] Nevertheless, a basic argument for Christianity in light of the problem of evil should look something like this. One can construct such an argument by using material only from Lewis, but his can be supplemented by many other sources.[iv] There is good evidence for the existence of a personal, moral, and infinite God from natural theology—a God who is (a) all-good and (b) all-powerful. God's goodness, specifically, is known through the moral argument for God (a version of which Lewis gave in Mere Christianity) and through God's saving actions in Jesus Christ (the historical dimension). There is objective evil in the world. Therefore (given 1 and 2), for any evil God allows, there is a sufficient reason for that evil to occur—whether we know what that reason is or not.[v] Freud's projection objection to theism fails, not only in its intrinsic logic, but because of the objective case for God's existence based on evidence outside of human desires. [i] This paragraph is taken from Groothuis, Douglas. Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith (pp. 367-368). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition. [ii] C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity (1944; reprint, New York: Simon & Schuster, 1996), 121. I develop this idea, with help from St. Augustine and Blaise Pascal, in Groothuis, Christian Apologetics, 366-368. [iii] See Groothuis, Christian Apologetics, “The Problem of Evil.” [iv] See Groothuis, Christian Apologetics. [v] Thus, an inexplicable evil is not a gratuitous or meaningless evil. The Universe was created with an explosive "Big Bang" from a single point-mass of matter and energy with zero volume. This discovery disproves the notion of an infinite universe and implies the existence of a Creator. Scientists have confirmed the Big Bang's existence with observational evidence, showing that the universe was created from "nothing" in a planned and controlled manner. The Explosion was balanced, resulting in galaxies, stars, the sun, the earth, and other heavenly bodies. The Big Bang has challenged the materialist view of an eternal universe and has caused much trouble for those who deny the existence of a Creator. The Universe was created with a Big Bang Explosion, and laws of physics were formed from it that are uniform throughout the universe and have not changed in 15 billion years. These laws are so precise that even a slight alteration would cause destruction. This incredible order and balance indicates a creation with a purpose, supported by the fact that the universe is habitable and the rate of expansion after the Big Bang was finely tuned. Scientists like Fred Hoyle, Paul Davies, Stephen Hawking, and George Greenstein all agree that this points to a supernatural agency. The Universe, created by Allah, is a powerful testament to His existence and His supreme power. Through the alternating night and day, the changing winds, and the clouds that move between heaven and earth, the creation of the heavens and earth with its precise balances and all its life forms illustrates Allah's command and authority. The Qur'an, revealed fourteen centuries ago, confirms this truth and proclaims Allah's greatness as the Lord of all worlds. Thus, the Universe was created through an explosion of power, and serves as further evidence of Allah's perfect creation and command. "He [Bernays] proposed to his uncle that he'd do a translation of this book that had been given to him and Freud, perhaps without thinking too much about it,  approved the idea.  Bernays went about hiring a translator who was a psychology Ph.D. student that he found at Columbia University and he got Stanley Hall to write an introduction for what was published in 1920 as ‘A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis'. Now, shortly after this happened,  Freud had second thoughts about authorizing Bernays to translate his lectures, particularly as he had been working with his trusted colleague Ernest Jones on translations.  But by the time Freud wired Bernays to try to stop this publication, Bernays said that it was already too late and that the advertisements had already been placed and the publication was proceeding. Bernays assured Freud that it would be all right and he also assured him that he would get fame and glory and also substantial recompense for the publication. Freud was not too happy about this, nor was Ernest Jones, and when they finally  received the translation that Bernays had done they were particularly upset."    Episode Description: We begin by describing the complicated bloodline between Freud and Edward Bernays - Bernays' mother was Freud's sister, and his father was the brother of Freud's wife. We then consider Bernays' role as the founder of the field of public relations. This has led many to inaccurately see him as a manipulator of the masses through the use of his uncle's theories. In fact, Bernays served as the pro-bono literary agent for Freud's books in the US which contributed to his popularization and to providing vital financial support during the years of Austria's hyperinflation. We also discuss Bernays' role in the American pro-democracy movement, which was designed to counter the influence of Nazi propaganda in the years before WWII. We close with Joseph's describing his interest in this subject and his wish to "set the record straight" about Edward Bernays.   Our Guest: Joseph Malherek is a historian who holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was the Junior Botstiber Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University, and he has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor of Austrian-American Studies at the University of Vienna. Belief in Allah is a powerful force that can lead to physical and mental health benefits. David B. Larson, of the American National Health Research Center, and his team compared devout and non-religious Americans and found that religious people suffer 60% less heart disease, 100% lower suicide rate, and far lower levels of high blood pressure than those with little or no religious belief. The International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine reported that those with no beliefs are twice as likely to suffer stomach-intestine diseases and their mortality rate from respiratory diseases is 66% higher than that of believers. Dr. Herbert Benson of the Harvard Medical Faculty concluded that worship and belief in Allah have a more positive effect on human health than that observed in anything else and that no belief provides as much mental peace as belief in Allah. This is because people who believe in Allah, trust and pray to Him, are behaving in accordance with the purpose of their creation and philosophies that go against it always lead to unhappiness. Scientific research has confirmed that religious belief is correlated with overall mental health and happiness. Note 69. Leaders are the first ones people look to for answers in times of hardship and crisis, but they are also the first ones to be blamed. But if the problems of the organization aren't fixed or are actually made worse by the executive level, how can the leaders and employees below them help turn the organization around? Application: Part 1: Work for positive change through the domains of impact: Self - Put the oxygen mask on yourself: lead in the domain of self by putting the oxygen mask on yourself. Remind yourself that your identity, purpose, and skills are bigger than your current title or paycheck. Learn how to zoom out and reframe your thoughts among the chaotic situations so that you are able to respond and not react with big emotions or actions. And Finally wash off the work day before going home and engaging with your family. Relationships - Put the oxygen mask on others: lead in the domain of relationships by helping others put on their oxygen masks. Provide support for your team by creating a format or platform to safely share their frustrations. Empathically listen and encourage your fellow team members. And when the time is right, use the opportunity to coach them in leadership so they can in turn help others with their oxygen masks. And remember the three warnings: Don't feel the need to own or solve the problem in the moment, structure the support so it doesn't take more time than it needs, and always speak in such a way that WHEN your words are repeated you are not ashamed of them. It's about being intentional in growing the leadership capacities of others by spending time teaching leadership, modeling leadership, and coaching for leadership. Application: There are three entry points into being intentional in growing leaders: Spending Time: Be sure to schedule time to build relationships with emerging leaders to teach and discuss leadership skills. Modeling: As a leader you are always in the spotlight of what is expected and tolerated as a leader…so practice what you preach about leadership and model it always. Coaching: Walk others through scenarios and situations that they'll experience in real life leadership. The phases for coaching are: trust in the relationship, observations of you leading apprenticeship where they lead and you provide specific feedback, mentorship, where you are their “go to” for wisdom, guidance, and support.

The aim of Transactional Analysis is social control, whereby one retains control of themselves despite others who may be consciously or unconsciously attempting to trigger emotions or moralistic beliefs. (Berne, 1961; p. 91) Transactional Analysis deals with what actually happens (interpersonally) rather than just what is going on in the minds of the individuals concerned, i.e., bird's eye view (Berne, 1963; p. 143). Transactional Analysis “provides a system for awareness of and control of the unconscious and automatic in a person's behavior.” (Childs-Gowell, 1979; p. 204) References: Berne, E. (1961). While the domains of impact are not created equal in their projected influence, they are definitely linked so that one cascades into the next. As the leader's influence moves between each domain, it scales (or is extended) in audience size. This impact can be positive or negative, but each domain will determine the greater level of impact. The five domains of impact are: Self Relationships Culture Organization Community The Self: Our first domain of impact is often the hardest one because it requires the most work. In our fountain of influence for positive impact, the self is the perpetual pump that keeps our fountain of influence and leadership flowing. If you've ever seen a fountain, you know that the pump is what makes it work. Relationships: We need deep meaningful relationships with others to mentally survive just like we need our bodies to physically survive. And, just like our bodies, our relationships can become healthier when we are more conscious of what we put into them. So The second domain of impact is RELATIONSHIP or how we connect with one another. Without positive relationships there is no way you can make a positive impact on a culture, organization, or a community. Because guess what cultures, organizations, and communities are made of…People. Culture: Culture is the collective behaviors, common language, stories, traditions, and celebrations within your group of people. Or as Seth Godin says “people like us do things like this.” And as Peter Drucker says “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” So in essence there is no point to strategy if you don't have the right culture to implement it with fidelity. To make a positive impact on an organization you must have built a great culture among the people at work first. Once the positive culture is established, the work group as a whole will display readiness for excellence in implementing systems and processes for results, collaboration, and innovation. Organization: Work on the business, not in the business. Successful organizations run because they have efficient and effective systems. However, organizations must remember that they don't simply manage people, you lead people and you must manage the system by which your organization achieves its objectives. The system produces the results; your people manage the system. Community: A community is…at its most simple of definitions a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. A community is larger than just one organization, it is made up of several…and all where organizations work together to support common local causes. Making a positive impact within the community requires the most generosity of your time, talents, and budget. It requires that the self, relationships, culture, and organization think and serve beyond itself. APPLICATION: The Self: Develop a strong foundation in your IDENTITY and PURPOSE. Know who you are, what you believe, and what your life's purpose is. Be intentional in growing your emotional intelligence, or the ability to identify and manage your emotions. Growing in your emotional intelligence means you have self-awareness and self regulation. Having a high emotional intelligence is like having your own personal pause button so you can respond instead of react. Do not be self focused, but be humble. Know that “IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU!” In summary, As if leadership wasn't hard enough, the reality in the HOW of making a positive impact…step one must always start with the self. And the ultimate goal in the SELF DOMAIN is to know the self, to grow the self, but not to focus on the self. Relationships: Always Lean in and turn towards - When people make bids for connection they are seeking attention, affirmation, affection, or any other positive connection. Acknowledge their bid for connection and turn towards (do not turn away or turn against). Learn how to resolve conflict - To make a positive impact on relationships you have got to know how to navigate the turbulent waters of conflict between yourself and others and conflict between people to people. Don't tell yourself stories to fill in the gaps of missing information. Go to episode 10 to learn more about conflict resolution skills using the AC/DC method Culture: Define the line - establish a clear identity of who the group is, what value, and how they behave or interact with each other Coach the line - always model what you expect of others and provide positive reinforcement for those displaying the cultural behaviors expected Defend the line - hold people accountable to the expectations of the cultural norm Organization: First, Work on the business, not just in the business Second Create systems and processes that outlast the people currently in that role (and that includes your role as well) Community: Smaller piece to a bigger puzzle - Realize that your organization is a much smaller piece to the bigger puzzle of society. Find other organizations to partner with to support common causes within the community Model service and invite your employees to serve in the local community REFERENCES: Godin, Seth. (2018). Why? Because to truly grow into a better leader, spouse, parent, family member, or friend, we have to pull back the curtains on how we engage with the world and realize that “we ain't all that plus a bag of chips.” If we don't start with understanding ourselves and how we how see the world and think about the experiences we have then we will continue to trick ourselves into believing that the world revolves around us and our point of view. Summary: How we see the world (our paradigm) and how we think about it (our mindset) has everything to do with how we experience life…and yours? Well, yours just might be getting in your way from finding joy and contentment at work and at home. Our paradigm is the way we “see” the world, or our frame of reference for how we interpret situations, people, and the world in general. Depending on how our paradigms are "tilted" or the assumptions we have been conditioned to, we can all have very different paradigms for how we see the world and the people in it. Mindset is the way your mind is set to think about things. Somewhere along the way our thinking led us to a story, and that story has caused deep ruts in our roads of thinking. And the thing is, we've been listening to stories and telling ourselves stories our whole lives. We become stuck in how we think about ourselves or the world around us; which in turn affects how we think about many other things we experience. There are four popular "settings" for mindset: Fixed vs Growth (Reference Carol Dweck, P.h.D) Scarcity vs Abundance (Reference Stephen R. Covey) Application You can't change other people so all positive change must start with you and you alone. Focus on self awareness so you come to understand how the obstacles you are currently facing affects your overall motivations, beliefs, thoughts, communication, and actions in overcoming those obstacles. The more you recognize and reflect on your "seeing and thinking" habits and the stories you tell yourself, you can become more able to slow your thinking and adjust the settings. When it comes to paradigm and building assumptions, you need to always be looking for clarity by seeking to understand the other person's point of view. You must understand that your paradigm is not always right. Now when it comes to mindset, you need to slow your thinking, stop the spiral of thoughts, and adjust your settings. You can in fact turn the mindset dial to that of growth and abundance. References: Covey, S. R. (1989). The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People: Restoring the character ethic. __ Site: https://ocastdosespiritos.libsyn.com Instagram: @ocastdosespiritos   Youtube: https://bit.ly/ocastdosespiritos __ Referências AVERY-PECK, A. This episode discusses the process of identifying an issue, developing a campaign to address that issue, and the kinds of public action a successful campaign involves.  How organizing develops and conducts campaigns is different to how many other kinds of campaign are run, whether that be an election campaign or an advertising campaign. To discuss with me the distinctive approach to campaigns and how they constitute a form of public action that not only wins change, but also builds up a community better able to act for itself rather than simply be acted upon is Jonathan Lange and Janice Fine. The conversation with Jonathan and Janice focuses on the initiation, development, and then subsequent spread of the Living Wage Campaign, a campaign in which Jonathan played a key role and that Janice researched and wrote on extensively. The focus on the Living Wage Campaign, which originated in Baltimore, serves as a case study through which to stage a wider discussion of what campaigns are, how they develop creative policy proposals, and their broader role in organizing.GuestsJonathan Lange comes from what he describes an old fashioned Jewish socialist family. His grandfather and father were active union members. It was in the labor movement that he got his start, organizing with the Clothing and Textile Workers Union in the 1980s.  He then became a community organizer with the IAF and has since organized in both work based and place based forms of organizing for over 40 years. As we shall hear, he was the lead organizer of the first ever Living Wage Campaign. A key aspect of his work has been training other organizers and leaders around the world, particularly in the United Kingdom and Germany which is where I met him over 15 years ago now.Janice Fine is Professor of Labor Studies and Employment Relations at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University. She is also the co-founder and Director of Research and Strategy at the Center for Innovation in Worker Organization (CIWO). Fine teaches and writes about forms of collective action among low-wage workers in the U.S including innovative union and community organizing strategies. She also studies historical and contemporary debates within labor movements regarding such issues as immigration policy, labor standards, privatization, and government oversight.  Much of this is addressed in her book Worker Centers: Organizing Communities at the Edge of the Dream. Prior to becoming an academic she worked as a community and labor organizer for over twenty years.Resources for Going DeeperCampaigns:Mike Gecan, “Part II: The Habit of Action,” Going Public: An Organizers Guide to Citizen Action (New York: Anchor Books, 2002), 49-126; Joan Minieri and Paul Getsos, “Part Three: Developing and Running Campaigns,” Tools for Radical Democracy: How to Organize for Power in Your Community (San Francisco: John Wiley & Son, 2007), 35-124; Luke Bretherton, Resurrecting Democracy: Faith, Citizenship and the Politics of a Common Life (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2015), Chapters 4 & 5; Taylor Branch, “The Montgomery Bus Boycott,” Parting the Water: America in the King Years, 1954-63 (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1988), Chapter 5; Saul Alinsky, “They sit to conquer,” John L. Discussion about the contradictory interpretation of both Testaments together occurs as well. The inspiration for this comes in the form of a reference Paul makes to the book The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Brad Dison's Remember This?

Baseball is America's national pastime.  When we think of baseball, we think of players who had memorable careers such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, and many more.  Richie Ashburn's name may not be as instantly recognizable as those mentioned above, but he had a claim to fame which no other Major League Baseball player in history can make."Remember This?" is a listener supported podcast made possible by the contributions of individuals and institutions who believe in the mission of providing thoroughly researched stories.  If you enjoy the "Remember This?" podcast, please donate by clicking the link above.  Individuals and institutions who donate to "Remember This?" ensure that we are able to continue sharing real stories about real people with a twist.  Donations of any size help advance this service.  Click here to donate. For more information about this and other episodes, please click here.Sources:The New York Times, September 17, 1867, p.2.Nash, Bruce, and Allan Zullo. I had an engaging conversation with Schalk Engelbrecht. We discussed ethics in the time of COVID-19.  Schalk is an ethicist, the Chief Ethics Officer at KPMG in South Africa, and a student of philosophy. He is responsible for KPMG's internal ethics programme, and assists client companies to identify ethics risk, develop Codes of Ethics, design ethics management programmes and facilitate ethics training. Schalk is also a research associate with the Centre for Applied Ethics at Stellenbosch University. In 2010 he completed his PhD in Philosophy with a thesis on the need to revive utopian thinking in an anti-utopian age. He has presented papers at national and international conferences on topics that include "radical business ethics", "the problem of the commons in organisations", and "ethics and utopian thinking". He is published in academic and popular journals and has been an invited speaker at conferences and provincial Anti-Corruption events. Before joining KPMG Schalk lectured Philosophy and Ethics at the University of Stellenbosch and North-West University. He has lectured Business Ethics as part of the University of Stellenbosch Business School's MBA programme, and was the previous editor-in-chief of the African Journal of Business Ethics. Notes & Resources: Defining Ethics: “Rules for the human zoo” - Peter Sloterdijk Dictionary definition: “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation”, “a set of moral principles: a theory or system of moral values” - Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The Framework: Key point: Context matters. The framework for being ethical has stayed the same, but the content has changed (changes over time) – for example, comparing ethics in the Victorian era and the era of climate change. Summa Theologica. In S. Medema, & W. Let's start with Karl Popper and the Paradox of Tolerance. This is something that has vexed me ever since I found out about it. The idea is this: think of society as having a sliding scale between tolerance and intolerance, with regard to people, with regard to ideas, politics, religion, race, sexual and gender identity, and so forth. The more the scale tips toward tolerance, the more intolerant ideas are sanctioned, so both tolerance and intolerance result in intolerance. Intolerance prevails either way. And the only way around this is to embrace intolerance, and then the question becomes, what kind of intolerance do we truly wish to prevail? Works Cited: Belief and Identity. (2019, August 3). In this episode, host Martin Rodriguez sits down with Allen Yeh, associate professor of intercultural studies at Biola University, to discuss his experiences in missiology and his hopes for its future. Our Guest Allen Yeh (DPhil, Oxford University) is an associate professor of intercultural studies at Biola University. He specializes in Latin America and China. He also has academic interests in history, classical music, homiletics, social justice, the California missions, the Maya, and biographical interest in Jonathan Edwards (America's greatest theologian) and Adoniram Judson (America's first intercontinental missionary). He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Foundation for Theological Education in Southeast Asia. He earned a BA from Yale, MDiv from Gordon-Conwell, and MTh from Edinburgh. Despite this alphabet soup, he believes that experience is the greatest teacher of all (besides the Bible). As such, Allen has been to over 60 countries on every continent, to study, do missions work, and experience the culture. As Mark Twain said in 1857, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." He is joyfully married to Arianna Molloy, a professor in Biola's communication studies department. Among Allen's publications are three books: Polycentric Missiology: 21st Century Mission from Everyone to Everywhere (Downers Grove: IVP Academic, 2016), Expect Great Things, Attempt Great Things: William Carey & Adoniram Judson, Missionary Pioneers (Studies in World Christianity), co-edited with Chris Chun (Eugene: Wipf & Stock, 2013), and Routes and Radishes: and Other Things to Talk About at the Evangelical Crossroads, co-authored with Dwight Friesen, Mark Russell, Michelle Sanchez, and Chelle Stearns (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2010). Special Note Dr. Yeh mentions Lamin Sanneh, one of the leaders of world Christian studies. After this episode was recorded, Lamin Sanneh died unexpectedly. We dive into the secession winter of 1860-1861 when politicians sacrificed unity and stability for personal power. The story of secession cannot be defined as simply an abolitionist versus slaveholders story. There were many factions of people in between the two extremes who were anti-slavery, deportationists, and everywhere in between. It was not as cut and dry as many historians tend to argue.Who were the “fire-eaters”? What were the differences between the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the Confederate States of America? Was the election of 1860 the reason that secession conventions were held?Further Reading:Freehling, William W. The Road to Disunion, Vol. I: Secessionists at Bay, 1776-1854. Þátturinn hófst á Lundúnaspjalli Sigrúnar Davíðsdóttur sem fór yfir nýjustu atburði í langri og strangri úrgöngusögu Bretlands úr Evrópusambandinu. Tillögum Theresu May forsætisráðherra um að Bretland njóti áfram aðildar að innri markaðnum með vörur var illa tekið á leiðtogafundi ESB fyrir helgi. Sigrún sagði líka frá misheppnuðum breytingum á lestarkerfi Bretlands en milljónir manna notast við kerfið á degi hverjum. Þá sagði hún frá Mark Kennedy sem var flugumaður bresku lögreglunnar í náttúruverndarsamtökum og hafði það hlutverk að njósna um félagsmenn. Kennedy kom m.a. annars til Íslands og starfaði, undir fölsku flaggi, með samtökum sem börðust gegn Kárahnjúkavirkjun. Loftslagsmál eru einn þeirra þátta sem taka ber tilllit til í skipulagi. Umhverfis- og auðlindaráðherra hefur falið Skipulagsstofnun að bæta loftlagsmálum og lýðheilsu við Landsskipulagsstefnu til 2026, og sagði Ásdís Hlökk Theodórsdóttir, forstjóri Skipulagsstofnunar frá þeirri vinnu sem nú fer í hönd vegna þess. Margt væri öðru vísi í borgarskipulaginu í Reykjavík ef fyrr hefði verið tekið tillit til þeirra þátta; borgin væri ekki jafn dreifð og hún er. Vera Illugadóttir fjallaði um Allsherjarþing Sameinuðu þjóðanna sem nú stendur í New York. Tónlist: The only living boy in New York - Simon & Garfunkel. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

This episode is on a topic that I find fascinating – the cultural issues that underlie our parenting. I actually think this issue is so important that I covered it in episode 1 of the podcast, which was really the first episode after the introductory one where I gave some information on what the show was going to be about. But recently I read a book called (http://amzn.to/2FRg5mm)  (Affiliate link) by Jean Twenge, a Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, which discusses some of the cultural contexts that have led to the generation of people born since 1970 to develop a certain set of characteristics that sometimes seem very strange to those who were born before us, and may be leading us to raise children who are just a bit too individualistic. In this episode I discuss some of those characteristics and what implications they have for the way we parent our own children, and offer some thoughts on how we can shift that our approach if we decide we want to. Mary Astor was in the words of David Niven a woman who "looked like a beautiful and highly shockable nun with the vocabulary of a long shoreman." Dominated by a brutish money grabbing father, hated by her mother, pushed into film acting and some disasterous marriages and affairs, it was a long time before the real Mary Astor came into her own. A woman consumed by her many passions and demons, she brought a vitality, intelligence and wit to her roles that was ahead of its time. This month is special. To celebrate our one year podcast anniversary we are devoting episode 13 to the Queen of Woman's Pictures, Joan Crawford. No idle gossip, or mention of THAT film will intrude on the Joan love-in. We are here to celebrate Ms Crawford through three of her finest films, 'Sadie McKee', 'A Woman's Face', and 'The Damned Don't Cry'. As part of our 'Sisters under the Skin' series, part 1 is Joan but in part 2 next month we will be discussing the incomparable Bette Davis. Bless you. On episode 10 of American History Too! we arrive at the tumultuous 1960s.  To help us better understand this controversial decade, Malcolm assumes host duties as Mark guides us through the presidency of Lyndon Johnson and his ambitious search for the ‘Great Society’.  What did Johnson mean by a ‘Great Society’?  What did he achieve?  And why did he leave the presidency as a ‘broken and dispirited’ figure?  And what in the world does a bill about rat extermination have to do with all of this?    Serious academic rigour aside, we engage in a discussion about the tallest and shortest presidents, Mark (briefly and horribly) attempts a Southern accent, while Malcolm marvels in the historical amnesia of ‘Guns or Butter’ advocates. Finally, we depart to the dulcet tones of one-hit wonder and apparent crystal ball owner, Barry McGuire, wand his eerily accurate 1965 song, ‘Eve of Destruction’.  Thanks again for listening and we’ll be back soon with a discussion of the JFK assassination. The second episode of American History Too! focuses on the Constitution of the United States.  To help us understand the goings-on down eighteenth century Philadelphia way, we bring aboard our very own American, and revolutionary scholar, Jane Judge.  During the podcast we examine why the US even needed a constitution, and whether it was all an exercise in elites getting richer or just a way of giving the British the intellectual middle-finger.  Malcolm also gets put on the spot regarding his comments in the last podcast, Jane tells us that Charles Beard is not a man to be listened to, and Mark argues that this is the first moment in American History where the axiom of the ‘New World’ is justified.  What’s more, we investigate whether Anti-Federalists were indeed ‘men of little faith’ and why Massachusetts was the most high-maintenance of all the former colonies.   Finally, we leap forward into the twenty-first century and discuss the relevance of the second amendment (hello AK-47s) and the legacy of the Founding Fathers in modern America. All this and much more on this week’s American History Too!.  Thanks to all of you who listened to the first podcast and we will be back in two weeks with a discussion of ever-fascinating Andrew Jackson. Vgl. etwa: Etzioni, Amitai, 1996: The new golden rule: Community and morality in a democratic society. New York: Basic Books (AZ). Putnam, Robert D., 2000: Bowling Alone. The Collapse and Revival of American Community. New York: Simon&Schuster. Park, Robert E., 1929: The City as a Social Laboratory. Simmel, Georg, 1984: Die Großstädte und das Geistesleben. In: ders.: Das Individuum und die Freiheit. Essais. Berlin: Wagenbach. Siehe: Erving Goffman, 1963: Behavior in Public Places. Notes on the Social Organization of Gatherings. New York: The Free Press. S. 84 ff. #00:17:03# Zu den alten Städten des vorderen Orients siehe die Episode "5412 Jahre Vertrauen in Materialität - Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert im Gespräch" in diesem Podcast #00:18:05# Zur "Kreuzung der sozialen Kreise": Simmel, Georg, 1992: Die Kreuzung sozialer Kreise. Stadtpolitik, Stadtplanung und Stadtgesellschaft im Wandel. Wiesbaden: VS Verlag. S. 23-35. Vgl. Friedman, Marilyn, 1989: Feminism and Modern Friendship: Dislocating the Community. New York: The Berkley Publishing Group. Zur Entstehung des Grid siehe eine Austellung im "Museum of the City of New York". Online. #00:49:20# Zu Interaktionsordnungen (Goffman), Interaktionssystemen (Luhmann), einfachen Interaktionssystemen (Kieserling). Siehe: Goffman, Erving, 1983: The Interaction Order. Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp. Vgl.: Oldenburg, Ray, 1997: The Great Good Place: Cafes, coffee shops, community centers, beauty parlors, general stores, bars, hangouts, and how they get you through the day. Vgl.: Anina Engelhardt, Laura Kajetzke (Hrsg.), 2010: Handbuch Wissensgesellschaft. Physicists have amassed a lot of information about the universe, considering that they have gathered it from Earth – a mere grain of sand in the scheme of things. Many theories about space/time are challenging. Indeed it is often the gap between an abstract concept about the nature of space/time and my everyday experience of it that is the motivating force behind my work. Unbounded space speculates about the shape of an expanding universe. Einstein was the first to suggest that space might be finite yet unbounded. Steven Hawking and James Hartle propose that in the very first moments of the Big Bang space and time were merged. They claim that the origin of the universe becomes redundant when the Big Bang singularity is ‘smoothed out’. As Hawking states, ‘the boundary condition of the universe is that it has no boundary’.[1] The universe just is. To help visualise an expanding universe physicists sometimes use the image of an inflating balloon. They imagine dots on the balloon representing galaxies and the space between the galaxies stretching as the balloon inflates. Speculation about the shape of a universe that is finite, with no boundaries, curved by gravity and expanding, has produced a series of sculptures that have evolved along an eccentric path. The development of a sculpture is governed only partially by the concept, because the material relationships, the limitations, possibilities and formal properties combine to create the final piece, and in the case of Unbounded space the materials played a significant role. The best works transcend the original idea. While reflecting on how the universe might appear from outside is fraught with problems, there is an exhilarating freedom in this unknown territory. The work is idiosyncratic, derived not from mathematical modelling of space or the result of scientific analysis of observable data. In fact, the work has more in common with creation myths than real science. I am aware of the folly of my enterprise. I console myself that many theories about the universe are yet to be proved and we may never be able to visualise the shape of space. Ultimately, we must accept the mystery.
