Invincible Success: Amplify Your Career, Communications, and Life!
Have you ever had someone tell you that you would fail? That you aren't good enough? Perhaps the one saying those things to you was you? If you've ever heard you didn't have what it takes, it's time for you to learn to "Screw the Naysayers." Tim Alison is a thought-leadership advisor, author, and podcast host. In this episode, Tim shares his thoughts on happiness, motivation, and how we've been lying to younger generations.
Almost every small business owner has their version of the story. The friend, colleague, relative or coach who was convinced that their business was a non-starter. Yet, time and again these naysayers are proven wrong by those who have the confidence and determination to build their business as they knew is right. In this episode, Tim Alison, host of Screw the Naysayers Podcast, shares his powerful story of leaving his six-figure income to start his own company as well as some top tips on how to build up the confidence to keep going when everyone else thinks you are crazy. My Guest: Tim Alison Tim Alison walked away from a six-figure income and moved to a tiny fishing village in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he started his own company. Everybody laughed at him and told him that he was being ridiculous. However, they stop laughing when his sales topped 10 million. Today, Tim is the host of the Screw the Naysayers Podcast. His most recent claim to fame is that for his hundredth episode, he had Seth Godin on his show. Episode Highlights: [3:18]- Tim: But actually, I was in the top 2% of wage earners in the country. And I don’t say that to boast. But to just, you know, it is hard to walk away from something like that. But I didn’t feel purpose in what I was doing. I felt like, and I knew that I was being a lousy husband, and even worse parent. [5:44]- Estie: I get it, you’re there, you’re struggling, you get this kind of download, you feel like okay, I’m going to be dead or worse. Yeah. And I do think there’s worse than death. Death, I think is not so bad. [7:06]- Tim: The World Wide Web did not exist. You know, the, my first computer? Of course, we didn’t have any hard drives or anything, you had to run everything off floppy disk cats. [12:36]- Tim: So instead of spending millions and millions of dollars, I think I spent invested $25,000 and, all of a sudden, we had a total state of the art product, the only one in the world with Canadian content in it. [18:42]- Tim: The deal was that if you pay to get to Nova Scotia, I’ll pay for two nights in this really high-class resort, I’ll provide your meals, the entertainment disposal program. [30:50]- Tim: The other thing that I don’t like about word freedom is, you know, let’s get honest about this thing. I mean, do we want to be free from obligations to our family? Do we want to be free from obligations to our community? Do we want to be free from obligations to make the world a better place? I don’t. [32:17]: Estie: I’d love to spend a couple minutes on eye on that financial business literacy because I think it is so important. So many people struggle in their businesses, just because they don’t understand numbers. You know, the numbers don’t lie. [50:18]: Estie: I’m going to show you a really simple scale. This actually works amazing as a mastermind or a group coaching program. They say that in group coaching, people benefit, in some ways more than one-on-one, because they hear the questions from other people that didn’t realize they had and wouldn’t have thought to ask, but, they needed that answer. I don’t. Tim and his guests take on an education system that is failing our kids, and encourages people of all ages to shatter self limiting beliefs and live the life you want. Tim also advises and mentors experienced business people on how to harness the power of their knowledge and experience to create a business that provides income and meaning. Society has a very narrow definition of success. The expectation is that you go to college, get a corporate job, and make a lot of money. And if you stray from that path and stretch the boundaries of what people can imagine, the naysayers will get nasty. So, how do develop the courage to disregard the naysayers and design a life that aligns with YOUR values? Tim Alison is the founder and CEO at Screw the Naysayer Productions. In 1988, Tim walked away from a six-figure corporate job in Toronto and moved to a tiny fishing village in rural Nova Scotia. There, he started an educational software company that generated upwards of $10M in revenue. With 30-plus years of experience as an entrepreneur and small business coach, now Tim is turning his attention to writing and podcasting. His show, Screw the Naysayers, offers practical advice on overcoming adversity and shattering limiting self-beliefs. Today, Tim joins Emerald to offer insight around society’s faulty definition of success and his calling to help young people find the courage to live the life they want. He shares his definition of entrepreneurship as a creative process, explaining how he came to initiate the Screw the Naysayers movement. Tim also discusses how coaching helped him develop a keen self-awareness and how the unconditional support of one person can drown out a thousand naysayers. Listen in to understand how Tim holds himself accountable to achieve his vision and learn how he celebrates success with time outdoors! This week I’m calling BS on all the adults who keep telling their kids that they can do anything they want when they grow up. Not because the words are wrong. They’re spot on. The problem is most of these adults are guilty of telling their kids to do as they say, not as they do. Here’s the thing. Kids aren’t stupid. And if the adults around them are part of the 87% of employees in this world who are disengaged from their work, then you can be assured the kids can tell. We’re living in a world full of actors. People that say life is great, when their actions and demeanor say something different. In this episode of Mind Games I talk about lessons I learned from the actions of my Aunt (The first woman to reach the executive floor at Labatt’s Brewery) and my Mom (She graduated 3rd in the 1947 Business and Commerce Class for the University of Toronto. The announcement of her graduation in the local newspaper, noted that she had graduated from Business and Commerce, “a subject usually considered difficult for women.” I grew up surrounded by adult role models who refused to let societal norms determine their career or life trajectory. It’s not something we talked about. It was just there. Parents, if you want your kids to believe in the possibilities, then you’d best start believing too. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Do you remember the first time you went to a funeral? For me it was for my Grandfather. The day before the service we went to the funeral home for the visitation. The family drove right to the front door. The line of people waiting to pay their respects went all the way around the block. Some people waited for more than an hour, just to get into the home. I didn’t understand at the time. My grandpa was a retired small business owner. He sold coal which in those days people used to heat their homes. Hardly a glamorous business. Who were all these people? Why were they here? Then the stories started to flow. Everyone had a memory of my grandpa. But the tears came from people that had worked for him (he kept everyone on during the Great Depression), and from the families he kept warm by giving them free coal to heat their homes. I later learned that he never made any effort to collect for the coal. If people came in he accepted payments, but those that couldn’t, or chose not to, were never embarrassed. After his funeral, I hear a woman say to another, “If Ford Wilson had worked at hard at his business as he did at helping his community, he would’ve been a rich man.” IMHO my grandpa was the richest man I’ve ever met, and it has nothing to do with his success in business. Who is the richest woman or man you know? Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, and stories, or just make a connection. How do you define success? As a teenager or young adult, how many people asked you that question? My guess is not many. There is a reason for that. In a society that values conformity, the definition of success has already been given to us. Get an education, get a job, start at the bottom, work your way up, accumulate assets (house, car, etc.), or some version of that. It’s all about personal achievements. The speed at which you achieve these milestones is the measure of your success. It’s important that we buy into this concept. Can you imagine the chaos that would emerge if we encouraged every child to create their own definition of success? If we stressed, from an early age, that you, and only you, get to decide what is important to you. The logical next step is to build your life around those things. Listen in as I tell you how to do that in this short clip. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, and stories, or just make a connection. The myth that winners never quit is an oft repeated and harmful falsehood that is responsible for so much pain. If you don’t believe me, ask Seth Godin. In 2007 he wrote a book called “The Dip” that in his words, teaches you when to quit. He goes on to explain that winners quit all the time. He was right then, and he’s right today. So why has the concept that quitting is bad become ingrained into the belief systems of so many people, and why should you care? It gets there because we hear stories of successful people, often entrepreneurs or celebrities, who achieved their goal through sheer perseverance. Or so it seems. So when we’re having a tough go of it, it’s easy to tell ourselves that all we have to do is put our head down, keep doing what we’ve been doing, and wait for things to get better. This is a dangerous belief system because it flies in the face of common sense. Persisting in doing the same thing can take us closer to or further away from the things we want. We have to learn to distinguish between the goals that we’re chasing, and the path that we’re taking to get there. So how do you do that? Well first of all it's helpful to know why you believe that persistence is the right approach. So I share with you 3 reasons why many of us are in denial. And I also give you five key questions you can ask yourself if a part of you is questioning the path your on. Name one time when quitting something was the right thing to do? Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, and stories, or just make a connection. “I think I’d be a great fit for your show.” These are meaningful words for a podcast host, but not in the way you might think. For me it’s a bit like waving a red flag in front of my face. You’ll have my attention, but you better be prepared to tell me why, in a short concise statement. Sadly most often people that lead with this claim can rarely walk the talk! My guest on today’s show is Corey Poirier, otherwise known as That Speaker Guy. Corey is a busy guy. He is a much in demand public speaker who gives keynote addresses at events around the globe. He is also a best selling author, creator of the Speaking Program where he helps people learn how to tell their stories on stage, and the host of For The Love of Speaking Podcast. Each week Corey gets between 20-40 unsolicited requests to be on his podcast. Here at the Screw the Naysayers Podcast I get 10+ each week. The good news is we want to say yes. The bad news is there are only so many slots we can fill, and like any podcast host we’re looking for specific things. In this mini episode Corey and I talk about the do’s and don'ts of pitching yourself to be a guest on a podcast (or any other new media show). I think about my business probably 70% of my waking hours. I’m, not 100% proud of that actually. There’s certainly mental space that needs to be freed for more about family, and fun, and nature, and playing tennis, and riding my bike. But I obsess about the details, the upcoming decisions, internal systems, the right ways to market, do we have enough clients, do we have too many, are they the right clients,on and on. Thinking about your business is a good thing but cycling on it isn’t. McKenzie always pushes me to think through a decision, make it, and move on. Yesterday’s decisions are over. Celebrate your successes, learn from your failures, but mostly, move forward. Our guest today has certainly done that. His big entrepreneurial move was happened when he was a big shot sales guy at a large corporation. Like so many, he realized that he never saw his kids, he drank too much, and, while his pockets were full, his soul was empty. So, he dropped out. He left his way up the ladder sales job, the big city, and his entire adult idea of employment. He and his family moved to a tiny fishing town in Nova Scotia Canada. It was there that he started the entrepreneurial journey he’ll share with us today. Tim Alison heard a lot from Naysayers at that time. But he didn’t listen then and he’s here to tell us why you shouldn’t either. We’re glad you joined us. Overview of the conversation: Getting to know Tim (3:30) What is success? (14:00) What triggered Tim to leave the corporate life (21:45) How Tim started his business (26:30) Executing on the ideas in your head (37:00) Mentioned in the episode: Screw The Naysayers: They Suck Anyway! Business Playmakers podcast is excited to present Tim Alison who is the Author of the book Screw The Naysayers, They Suck Anyways! In this episode, Kyle and Tim have a conversation that breaks the norm of the typical question and answer format of the Business Playmakers podcast. Tim is very knowledgable and experienced in many areas with a history that is one of a guy who seemed to have it all. Tim tells the story of being in his late 20’s, a six figure income, two kids, wife, and a career that was about to explode. Unfortunately Tim was also about to explode, as he explains that when a company is paying you a large amount of money, it is because they want a large amount from you. Even though Tim was very successful in his career, he never saw his kids, had a struggling marriage, and was at a breaking point. The wake up Tim finally had was, “sitting on the toilet, naked, at three o’ clock in the morning, crying.” This led Tim to do what others called crazy, which was to move to a small fishing village to slow his life down, focus on his family, and start a software company. To say that people called him crazy was an understatement as there seemed to be judgment from everywhere, however Tim knew he was doing what was right for his family. Tim discovered a way to build a job around the life he wanted to live, and the opinions of everyone else along the way fueled the book he later wrote titled, Screw The Naysayers, They Suck Anyways! Today Tim hosts a podcast, and has an online community for other entrepreneurs who also need guidance in dealing with naysayers. Enjoy the awesome conversation between Tim and Kyle as they dive into multiple topics about business, workforce development, and life. Episode 46: Tim Alison. About Tim: "For five years in my twenties, I was living a lie. From the outside looking in, I had it all. A wonderful wife, a millionaires family (a son and a daughter), and a six-figure income. There was just one problem- I was miserable. So I did the logical thing (to me): quit and moved to a tiny fishing village in Nova Scotia, Canada. When I started an educational software company the naysayers came out of the woodwork, telling me that I was a complete idiot doomed to failure. They stopped saying that when my sales topped $10 million. The thing is, it was never about the money. It was about living the life I wanted. During this journey, I learned that the most valuable gift you can give someone is your belief in their ability. That’s why, at age 60, I created the Screw the Naysayers Podcast. Each week I interview leading experts in innovation, education, entrepreneurship. My goal is to inspire listeners to expect more from life and provide practical advice that can be used to break free from a system that has been set up to encourage them to settle."
