In Episode 94, Call Number celebrates Preservation Week, this year held April 28–May 4. With the theme of “Preserving Identities,” the week's events aim to raise awareness of the role libraries and cultural institutions play in protecting historic and culturally significant collections. First, American Libraries Managing Editor Terra Dankowski speaks with Indigenous author Traci Sorell, the honorary chair of this year's Preservation Week. Sorell, a former attorney who worked on Native Nations policy, discusses preservation's part in telling stories. Next, American Libraries Associate Editor and Call Number host Diana Panuncial speaks with Kathleen Monahan, special collections public services supervisor at Boston Public Library, about the importance of security in preservation. Monahan, who cochairs the Security Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ALA's Association of College and Research Libraries, provides insight into the committee's recently updated Guidelines Regarding the Security of Special Collections Materials. Finally, American Libraries Associate Editor Megan Bennett speaks with Rosie Grayburn and Melissa Tedone, cofounders of the Poison Book Project, a joint initiative of Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library (WMGL), and the University of Delaware (UD) in Newark. In this conversation, Traci Sorell joins Jennifer to discuss her passion for storytelling and the importance of representation in literature. She emphasizes the need for diverse stories that reflect the experiences of Native people and dispel stereotypes. Traci also shares her writing process and the significance of incorporating Cherokee language and culture in her books. She encourages readers to connect with one another through stories and use their gifts and abilities to foster understanding and empathy. More information about this episode, including a discount code for purchasing Traci's books through Bookelicious, can be found at librarygirl.net Takeaways Representation in literature is crucial for marginalized communities, as it allows readers to see themselves and their experiences reflected in stories. Incorporating diverse perspectives and cultures in books helps dispel stereotypes and fosters empathy and understanding. The writing process varies for each author, but it often involves considering the structure, format, and through line of the story. Seeking feedback from critique groups, cultural experts, and language translators can enhance the authenticity and accuracy of storytelling. Language reclamation and preservation are essential for Native communities, and publishing books in native languages helps promote cultural identity and understanding. Storytelling has the power to connect people, bridge gaps, and promote empathy, making it a vital tool for building a more inclusive and compassionate society. Traci Sorell and Madelyn Goodnight share POWWOW DAY, an uplifting, contemporary Native American story about a girl named River, who is recovering from illness and can't dance at the powwow this year.    BOOK DESCRIPTION: Powwow Day by Traci Sorell, illustrated by Madelyn Goodnight Page Length: 32 pages Ages 8 to 8, Grades P to 3 In this uplifting, contemporary Native American story, River is recovering from illness and can't dance at the powwow this year. Will she ever dance again? River wants so badly to dance at powwow day as she does every year. Follow River's journey from feeling isolated after an illness to learning the healing power of community. Additional information explains the history and functions of powwows, which are commonplace across the United States and Canada and are open to both Native Americans and non-Native visitors.    NOTABLE QUOTES: (4:55) “There's so much to see and do. The sights and smells. So much good food. So much great dancing and music. [Powwow is] just such a beautiful event that lasts all day that really helps you connect with that heritage and that culture and become immersed in it. ”  (5:12)  “For myself, being at a powwow is a sensory overload sometimes because there are wonderful smells from the food, and the sound of the drum, the laughter, the singing. I am overwhelmed visually by all the different regalia that everyone's wearing and all of the just gorgeous colors. And you know that so many people's families and friends have taken time to put that regalia together. So it's just visually so beautiful.” (7:17)  “Everyone is welcome at the powwow.” (11:58) “All of us at various times have to ask for help or have to take time out from things that we wanna do, that we love to do. And other people care for us, right? And love us and pray for us, and, um, help us through those things. ” (20:52) “You all have so many stories inside you and I can't wait to experience what you're gonna share with the world. So please, please share your stories with us. ”  (21:03) “I think Powwow Day and powwows in general about are all about celebration, celebration of heritage and culture and the things you like to do and dance, so I would encourage everybody to read Powwow Day and learn about powwows, but also just do something to celebrate yourself and celebrate your own culture and something you like to do. And, um, dancing is always a good way to do it.”   ADDITIONAL LINKS: Traci Sorell's Website - TraciSorell.com Madelyn Goodnight's Website - MadelynGoodnight.com Purchase the Book - Powwow Day Purchase the Book - Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids  Gathering of Nations - https://www.gatheringofnations.com/   TALK ABOUT THE EPISODE: What is a powwow? Can you think of a time when you or someone in your family wore special clothes for an event? (baptism, wedding, powwow, bar or bat mitzvah, Eid al-Fitr, etc.) What were you (and others) celebrating? How did it feel to wear these special clothes? Have you ever missed out on something that you were anticipating or looking forward to? Share your memory with someone near you. What happened? A big welcome back to JESS MONTGOMERY! We have a lovely chat about the new entry in her Kinship Series, THE ECHOES: A Novel. Emily and Chris are both currently reading DEATH ON THE NILE by Agatha Christie for a buddy read with Our Mystery Man, John Valeri. Stayed tuned for our conversation with John about the novel and the new movie adaptation coming up on episode 155. The big news in our lives is that we FINALLY got to head back to Manhattan for some BIBLIO-ADVENTURING with Aunt Ellen! It was so good to be back in the city that we love after a two-year pandemic-induced separation. We got our library cards renewed at the NYPL, walked to the Morgan Library & Museum to see their GWENDOLYN BROOKS exhibit, walked through Central Park for lunch, and then on to the NY Historical Society Museum & Library to see their exhibit, PICTURE THE DREAM: THE STORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THROUGH CHILDREN'S BOOKS. A bonus surprise was walking through the ROBERT CARO exhibit showcasing his writing process. After that, we walked some more to check out a new-to-us bookstore, WESTSIDER RARE & USED BOOKS. What a day! In our Just Read segment, Emily talks about HUNGRY HEART: ADVENTURES IN LIFE, LOVE, AND WRITING by Jennifer Weiner, PEARL by Tabitha King, and TRUE BIZ by Sara Nović. Chris read THE CHILDREN ON THE HILL by Jennifer McMahon, and three picture books: I AM AN AMERICAN: THE WONG KIM ARK STORY by Martha Brockenbrough, Grace Lin, and Julia Kuo; OSNAT AND HER DOVE: THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD'S FIRST FEMALE RABBI by Sigal Samuel and Vali Mintzi; WE ARE STILL HERE: NATIVE AMERICAN TRUTHS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW by Traci Sorell and Frane Lessac. We also buddy read MAUD MARTHA by Gwendolyn Brooks, a novel we both highly recommend if you can find it! It is out of print but there is a new edition coming out in the UK in early May.

Traci lives with her family in the Cherokee Nation, out in the country like she did as a child. Back then, she had geese, chickens, horses, dogs and cats. Her mother’s Cherokee family has been in the area since the removal of most Cherokee people from their southeastern homelands in 1838. Traci grew up hearing stories about her ancestors and looking at their photographs with her elisi (eh-lee-see), grandma. Now her son does that with his elisi in addition to fishing in the nearby lake and learning their Cherokee culture. Before she began writing for children, Traci’s work focused on helping Native American tribes and their citizens. She wrote legal codes, testimony for Congressional hearings, federal budget requests, grants and reports. She continues that work by writing stories for young people and encouraging other Native writers and illustrators to share theirs. When Traci was a child, she never read culturally accurate books about the Cherokee or any other Indigenous people. The stories and poems she writes now reflect her mission to add to the canon of literature showing that Native Nations and their citizens still exist and thrive today. In this episode, Traci talks about her books as a way for people to learn more about native people in the past and present. ***Episode Notes*** Gaps in the history curriculum post 1870 Representation, research, and own voices Importance of land acknowledgements Respect versus appropriation  Cherokee values and hidden figures On Balance: Gratitude for the blessings and the struggles Follow Traci on twitter and instagram @TraciSorell Photo credit: Kelly Downs Photography

This is a dedication to the life and light of Charlene Willing McManis, and the story she told the world. Traci Sorell (@tracisorell) joins me to share INDIAN NO MORE, a debut middle grade novel by the late Charlene Willing McManis with Traci Sorell. Charlene poured a lot of life and a lot of history we don’t get taught in schools into the writing of her debut novel. The result is an unforgettable protagonist named Regina Petit who has always been Umpqua and has always lived with her family on the Grand Ronde Tribe’s reservation. Following true events, the federal government enacts a law determining that it will no longer acknowledge the existence of the Umpqua or several other tribes on this land. Regina’s family moves to Los Angeles as part of the federal Indian Relocation Program and the family attempts to start life anew amid the backdrop of the Civil Rights era. I reference in our conversation an outstanding review of INDIAN NO MORE on the blog Indigo’s Bookshelf by a 13 year old member of the Children of the Glades group of Seminole and Miccosukee teens  and I’ve linked that review in the show notes for this episode. Hearing how this author processed this book profoundly affected the way I read it. And I loved reading this book. Weshoyot Alvitre (@weshoyot) shares AT THE MOUNTAIN’S BASE, a poetic story written by Traci Sorell and illustrated by Weshoyot about a family nervously awaiting the return of a family member serving in WWII. This is a story where you notice the silence. The large illustrations and colorful thread framing and connecting the art draw eyes to the hands and faces we meet in a cabin at the base of a mountain, but the waiting and the working in silence builds such terrific tension that I personally found myself at a loss of breath by the story’s end. Frané Lessac (@franelessac) shares UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS and UNDER THE MILKY WAY. Frané has made many beautiful books, but it was Traci Sorell’s debut picture book, WE ARE GRATEFUL: OTSALIHELIGA, in 2018 that really made me sit up and pay attention. Today Frané brings two picture books about the stars, both sharing a U.S. publication date. Frané tours the northern skies over our United States in UNDER THE MILKY WAY, highlighting different activities and occurrences that happen beneath the stars. In UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS she turns to the southern skies and a series of stars that point to True South. There are tiny turtles scrambling down the beach, shooting stars, clouds of bats, Nations coming together, and even a staircase of gold, and they are all visible beneath our skies.
