Look alive, Sunshine! It's time for another Book Club episode. Gen and Jette discuss The True Live of the Fabulous Killjoys: California by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan. It's a great conversation about storytelling, graphic novels, and dystopian aesthetics. Show notes: Killjoys may have begun as an idea for a comic book series, but it first came to life on My Chemical Romance's album Danger Days. The graphic novel picks up where that story leaves off. Watch the music videos for "Na Na Na" and "SING" for more Killjoys content and to see the where the aesthetic of the comic was born. The sequel to Killjoys: California is available in a collected edition called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem. We came up with about five different essays we could write based on this book and had a great discussion about the use of colour. Gerard Way was cofounder of the DC imprint Young Animal, but both Killjoys and Umbrella Academy were published by Dark Horse Comics. For more graphic novel goodness, listen to Episode 21 where we discuss Shade, the Changing Girl by Cecil Castellucci. Our next book club book is Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. We'll be discussing this one in our first episode of 2022! They begin with Gerard Way and Nick Derington's Doom Patrol, the maiden voyage of the new imprint. There have been three issues released so far, and the guys really like what they've seen. Way definitely takes a cue from Grant Morrison's legendary run on the title, referencing many of Morrison's original additions to the Silver Age series -- most notably Danny the Street and Flex Mentallo -- yet at the same time making Doom Patrol uniquely his own. After that, Andy and Derek discuss the first four issues of Shade the Changing Girl. This is Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone's revamping of the old Steve Ditko creation (and best popularized in the early 1990s by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachelor), Shade the Changing Man. Their emphasis on the lives of young high school women promises to be a curious spin on the property. Next, the guys turn to what Andy calls his favorite of the Young Animal line, Jonathan Rivera, Gerard Way, and Michael Avon Oeming's Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye. As they point out, Cave Carson is a character from the early 1960s appearing in both Brave and the Bold and Showcase, but unlike his contemporary Rip Hunter, he never received a title of his own. Way, Rivera, and Oeming are now giving him that opportunity. The Two Guys conclude their episode with a very different kind of Young Animal title, Jody Houser and Tommy Lee Edwards's Mother Panic. This is the only one of the four series not to be based on Silver Age properties, and it's the only one to be deeply enmeshed into the DC Universe. For that reason, Derek is less enamored with Mother Panic -- at least in terms of the first two issues so far -- feeling that it takes itself too seriously and wonders why this wasn't a regular DC title. Andy has no problem with this Gotham-drenched series.

Our guest on this episode is Cecil Castellucci, one of America's most influential young-adult novelists. Her first book, Grandma's Gloves, won the California Book Award Gold Medal. Her novel Boyproof debuted in 2005 and was named one of the best books for young adults by the American Library Association. She's also in the world of comics; she won the Joe Shuster Award for her graphic novel Plain Janes, which was published by DC Comics' Minx imprint. She was nominated for a Will Eisner Award for her book Odd Duck, and Moving Target, her Princess Leia Star Wars novel, was published to great acclaim last year. Right now, she is working on Shade the Changing Girl, part of the new imprint that DC Comics is putting out, Young Animal, which is spearheaded by none other than Gerard Way. http://BlastoffComics.com

This week, we have an amazing conversation with Cecil Castellucci, author of many fine books, including Odd Duck, The Plain Janes, Star Wars: Moving Target, and the upcoming Shade the Changing Girl for DC Comics' Young Animal imprint and Soupy Leaves Home for Dark Horse Comics. Cecil has had an incredibly diverse career, and we do our best to touch on much of it - from her days at the Fame high school in New York to her time in an indie rock band to her more recent YA and graphic novel work. We chat about contributing to the Star Wars universe, charting an experimental course with Gerard Way on the brand-new Young Animal books, gender-swapping the character of Shade (who was previously Shade the Changing Man for DC's Vertigo line), and dipping her toes into the world of opera. This one's just a flat-out fun conversation.

Stone in the Sky (Roaring Brook Press) The Baseball Player and the Walrus (Dial Books) Please join us tonight as we celebrate the launch of Cecil Castellucci's Stone in the Sky, as well as the paperback release of Tin Star and the 10th anniversary of the release of Boy Proof, which was just named as one of the top 100 best YA Books of All Time by Time Magazine! For today's event Cecil will be joined by Ben Loory, who will be launching his first children's book The Baseball Player and the Walrus! "Brother Blue. His name, even the color, filled me with a furious fire of pure hatred." Years ago, Tula Bane was beaten and left for dead on a remote space station far from Earth, her home planet. She started with nothing and had no one, but over time, she found a home, a family, and even love. When it's discovered that the abandoned planet beneath the station is abundant with a rare and valuable resource, aliens from across the galaxy race over to strike it rich. With them comes trouble, like the man who nearly killed Tula years ago—the man she has dreamed of destroying ever since. In this sequel to Tin Star, Cecil Castellucci takes readers on an extraordinary adventure through space in a thrilling and thoughtful exploration of what it means to love, to hate, and to be human. Cecil Castellucci is a two-time MacDowell Colony fellow and award-winning author of twelve books for young adults, including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes,First Day on Earth, Year of the Beasts, and Tin Star. She lives in Los Angeles. . . . From acclaimed short-story writer Ben Loory comes a sweet and poignant story of friendship. Once there was a famous baseball player who seemed to have it all. He made lots of money and had fans from around the world. But, he didn't have the one thing he wanted most—happiness. That is until he went to the zoo. There the baseball player sees a walrus who “makes funny noises” and “flaps its flippers” in glee, and he decides he wants the walrus in his life. When the baseball player leaves his job to spend more time with his new best friend, trouble arises in zoo paradise. Hopefully, the pair can find a compromise that will keep everyone happy and even leave a little time for one last game. The Baseball Player and the Walrus brings the love of baseball and of friendship together in a humorous story of how we find happiness in the most surprising of places. Author Ben Loory lives in Los Angeles and is the acclaimed author of Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day, which Kirkus has called “one of kind.” His short stories have appeared in the New Yorker and on NPR's This American Life. ODD DUCK (First Second) Prolific young adult author and longtime friend of Skylight Books Cecil Castellucci is BACK with a brand new graphic novel picture book for children and the young at heart.  Illustrated by the wonderful Sara Varon! (Robot Dreams) Theodora is a perfectly normal duck. She may swim with a teacup balanced on her head and stay north when the rest of the ducks fly south for the winter, but there's nothing so odd about that. Chad, on the other hand, is one strange bird. Theodora quite likes him, but she can't overlook his odd habits. It's a good thing Chad has a normal friend like Theodora to set a good example for him. But who exactly is the odd duck here? Theodora may not like the answer. Sara Varon ("Robot Dreams") teams up with Cecil Castellucci ("Grandma's Gloves") for a gorgeous, funny, and heartwarming examination of the perils and pleasures of friendship. Advanced praise for ODD DUCK: "Fresh and funny."--New York Times "Varon's gentle art and Castellucci's nuanced writing combine in a sweet, quiet tale that celebrates the joys of being unique." -- Booklist "This clever celebration of individuality delights." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review "A lively friendship story that shows it's more fun to be different than "normal," and most fun of all to be different with a buddy." -- The Horn Book Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth, The Year of the Beasts and Odd Duck.
