Screenwriter Misha Byrne has just received an ultimatum from the studio executives — their algorithm says to kill off his beloved queer TV characters, or else. Misha refuses, and Santana captures Misha's initial angry exasperation, then his escalating terror as he suddenly faces deadly characters from his horror films. Scripts of certain mysterious scenes are performed by a full cast of authors. Simple Thing, Felt: Nina LaCour on Unwrapping a Moment

"I spend a lot of time trying to hope that I'll remember little things and how a certain simple thing felt. …  Writing is one way of trying to capture that feeling, even if I'm fictionalizing it still.” - Nina LaCourIf Nina LaCour were a drink, she would be a cozy cup of tea. You're not rushing to finish a conversation with Nina. Rather, you are spending time exploring the details. And that is exactly what we did in this episode. The world moves fast. Usually faster than we'd like it to. But writing can gift us the ability to slow a moment down, to digest and analyze at a more intentional pace. For Nina LaCour, writing starts with observing the world around you, getting ready to break it down into words and unravel the meaning on a page. As a new writer, Nina found it best to share those observations through young adult literature after falling in love with it in college. She has since written a picture book, “Mama, Mommy and Me in the Middle,” and returned to an adult novel she shelved early in her career (“Yerba Buena”). More recently, she released "The Apartment House on Poppy Hill," the sweetest chapter book. Nina's work is notably thoughtful and gentle. Her complex topics have resonated deeply with young readers and adults alike (including our own recent guest, Mark Oshiro). She's best known for her novels such as “Hold Still,” "Everything Leads to You," and "We Are Okay," which received the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. In this episode, she shares her journey to falling in love with young adult literature and how Virginia Woolf helped her find the love of her life. She also explores writing's capacity to uncover the depth within every moment and discusses the importance of queer family representation in literature.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In her reading challenge, At the Intersection, Nina has curated a list of books at the intersection of queerness and family. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com/nina-lacourThis episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Faith Rice Mills, librarian at Nelda Sullivan Middle School in Pasadena, Texas. On Today's Show"It's practice. Vulnerability is practice. It is learning that you can do things and say things that seem scary, but ultimately know that you're safe.”  - Mark OshiroMark Oshiro was taught to fear the world. To be someone they were not and to repress someone they were. But books were an escape. Books taught them that freedom was possible.Mark spent over a decade blogging about the stories they consumed, empathizing with characters, criticizing choices, and embracing every person's journey. But then they realized it was their turn to share, and in that sharing, they learned the transformative power of storytelling from the other side of the pages. They knew the healing power of vulnerability.Mark debuted on the YA scene with their 2018 novel “Anger is a Gift” and has since written titles such as “Each of Us a Desert" and the latest installment in the Percy Jackson universe, “The Sun and the Star.” But their recent semi-autobiographical novel, 'Into The Light,' represents their most ultimate and vulnerable storytelling to date.In this episode, Mark shares their life story and reflects on the refuge that books and libraries offered them as a youth from an abusive household. Prophecy Radio episode #106 discusses Chalie of the Gods chapters 9 through 11 in all of their glory, including how wistful and introspective Percy is these days! We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog posts, J. Maya's fate on Survivor season 45, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, and Graci Kim's newly announced series coming in 2025. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:02) Life has been pretty chaotic on every front lately, but we're doing our best to get back into the groove of the podcast. Thanks for sticking with us! We start the episode with a discussion of Rick's October 17 blog post, in which he discusses what's going on in Gaza at the present moment. This post had no promotion, and it was seemingly deleted and then reuploaded. Rightfully, fans have been critical of Rick for talking about Gaza and then transitioning into self-promotion. Please be aware there is A LOT of misinformation out there about what's happening right now, so do your due diligence and verify all the information you're receiving before passing it on. Tehlor Kay Mejia, Daniel José Older, and Sarwat Chadda have been speaking out a lot on their platforms about Gaza, Israel, and Palestine, so be sure to follow them for additional resources. Mark Oshiro is raising funds for Palestine through Books for Palestine. The auction is now live. Here is a list of Palestinian journalists on the ground in Gaza. If you have the ability to donate, charities like Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, and Palestine Children's Relief Fund are good places to start. You can also use 5Calls to talk to your representatives about a ceasefire. Rick also wrote a blog post on October 23 about the recent releases from Rick Riordan Presents, and some upcoming titles. We're particularly looking forward to A Drop of Venom, Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters, and It Waits in the Forest. Read Riordan has also been busy over the last two weeks, wanting you to catch up with Zyanya from Dawn of the Jaguar, as well as meet Admiral Paik from Fox Snare. They also wrote a cute little article about how to sneak into Camp Half-Blood. Graci Kim also announced the title and a vague release date for her next book, Dreamslinger. We read through the synopsis and confirm that we're really excited about this one! Kristen's Korner is back as we discuss the last two episodes of Survivor season 45 and J's fate on the island. The SAG-AFTRA strikes are ongoing, and we're waiting with bated breath to see what becomes of them. Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (00:36:54) Let's kick off our discussion with Chalice of the Gods chapter 9! Getting chased by chickens is, like, Karen's worst nightmare. Annabeth is SO SMART, and we love how single-minded she is in leading the trio. Grover is so helpful in this chapter, and we love seeing him be the person with all the helpful information. Did you know that Hebe and Hercules got married!? Did we just find out why satyrs age half as fast as humans!? Grover must go distract the chickens while Annabeth and Percy commit a party fowl. NGL, we kinda love Li'l Killer. Okay, the plan is to sing a song and beg for forgiveness. The backup plan is Plan Chick…whatever that means! This chapter may have contained Karen's single favorite joke in all of Rick Riordan's books. Let's move on to Chalice of the Gods chapter 10. It's time to belt out a tune by some guy. Why is the choice always the plan succeeds or we die!? This is 90% all Percy's fault. Percy has his priorities, and Annabeth has hers. When did you figure out what Plan Chick was? Annabeth really is a genius. This was SO CLEVER. The trio FINALLY get returned to their proper ages. It's now time for Chalice of the Gods chapter 11. Hebe sends the trio after Iris, down at the farmers' market. It's so cute how excited Percy is for a local quest, but also pretty sad how traumatized he is by being turned back into a little kid. Sally Jackson gets the Mother of the Century award. Do we have to worry about her getting older!? What was Percy like when he was a kid? Mark Oshiro's influence on Rick is SO OBVIOUS in this chapter. Yes, Percy, MILLIONS of people have dreamt of slipping into your life. Can Percy wash the dishes and play video games at the same time!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 107, in which we'll discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 12-14! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. A lot of the presentation consisted of information we've already discussed. Can you guess which of the Rick Riordan Presents titles the audience was more excited about? Rick has already seen the cover for the third Serwa Boateng book! It should come as no surprise that the audience went WILD when Rick starting talking about the show. We'll bring you more information from that section after the strike is over. Stephanie Lurie makes an excellent Coach Hedge. Congratulations to everyone who won a chalice!!! Karen got to meet some listeners, and they were AWESOME!! Hopefully Karen AND Kristen can go to the next book tour together. We can't wait for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Interview with Rick Riordan (00:41:15) Check out our Rick Riordan interview discussing Chalice of the Gods! How does Rick usually plot out his stories? Was this one harder because it fits between two previous series? When did he start working on Wrath of the Triple Goddess? Has anything changed since the last time Rick wrote from Percy Jackson's point of view? Was writing this book different because it was a slice-of-life story? You can definitely feel Mark Oshiro's influence on this book! The spoiler section starts at 49:06. Did Rick ever consider someone else to be the bad guy in this story? Are there any myths that Rick still hasn't written about after all these years? Everyone is a huge fan of Grover and Aryan Simhadri. Rick gives us a little teaser for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Was it hard writing about Jason? Will we ever get another standalone novel like The Sun and the Star? When might we be getting some updates on all the projects he has going on? Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:54:16) First, let's tackle Chalice of the Gods chapter 4! Percy managed to make it through an entire day of school! We loved the details about Percy trying not to look too weird during swim practice. It's not hard to figure out someone's a god when they can freeze time. There's no way around this: Ganymede is hot. Let's take a trip to Himbo Juice! It's VERY important that we discuss everyone's drink order. There's a very good reason why Ganymede doesn't like eagles. In case anyone doubted it, Annabeth and Grover still have Percy's back. The gig economy is rough on everyone—even gods. Now it's time to discuss Chalice of the Gods chapter 5. Poor Ganymede is triggered. It's a VERY big deal that the chalice is missing. But who could've stolen it? Ganymede has a lot of enemies. Hera is mad that Ganymede has nicer legs than her. But Hebe and Iris used to have the job he has now… What kind of deadline are we working with? Ganymede has a few restrictions for the trio… Thank goodness Grover knows where to start! Feedback (01:18:49) Should this book have included all three quests, or do we like that we're getting a new trilogy? Rachel brings up a question about the timeline of this book and the events of The Last Olympian and Heroes of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 104, in which we'll discuss Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods chapters 6 through 8! Prophecy Radio episode #94 discusses Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some fun news from several different Rick Riordan Presents authors. Oh, and we give you a quick update on the WGA/SAG strikes and how they'll affect the podcast moving forward. This week, we pause our discussion of The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid in order to chat with Sarwat Chadda about his latest release. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:28) Read Riordan did a spotlight on up-and-coming Camp Half-Blood Campers and this seems to be mostly focused on characters from The Trials of Apollo. Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda is now officially out in the world! Read a Fury of the Deagon Goddess excerpt on Read Riordan. Kristen tells us about her experience attending the Fury of the Dragon Goddess virtual tour that Sarwat did with Books of Wonder. Did you know Kwame Mbalia is writing a short story for the Star Wars anthology From a Certain Point of View? Mark Oshiro will be at the National Book Festival on August 12. Make sure you check out Daniel José Older's new podcast Inkbottle. We also talk about some SAG-AFTRA updates that will affect the podcast. Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda (00:11:16) At long last, it's time to talk about Fury of the Dragon Goddess, the second book in the Adventures of Sik Aziz series. What is this book about? How did we feel about this book compared to the last one? What was it like reading about Sik and the others being in London instead of NYC? There are a lot of themes shared between these two books, but there are also some specific to Dragon Goddess. It's so interesting that we're reading this book at the same time we're talking about The Red Pyramid! Sik is still not a warrior, and we LOVE that about him. We're so happy he got to travel this time around…even if it all went horribly wrong. Daoud is, like, super famous now. We loved that this didn't solve all his problems, and we still got to see him (and his relationship with Sik) grow over the course of the book. Is Belet no longer looking for her mother? What's the deal with this tablet? Did we like that this book dealt a lot with (female) rage? Have you read “The Loneliest Demon” from Cursed Carnivals and Other Calamities? Who is Rabisu and why is she so great? Why does she want to kill Belet so badly, and why can't she? Everyone likes a pigeon sandwich…right? Wait, Rabisu has been WHERE? Who's Dumuzi, and how did he get with Ishtar? He might not be the greatest dad, but he seemed like a pretty good person. Lugal, on the other hand, seems to be a lot more complicated. And if you're looking for another character to compare him to, maybe try…Ultron. The spoiler section starts at 00:49:37. Let's talk about that black market party and how utterly racist those old ladies were. What did we think of Daoud's reaction to it all? Did we believe Mo was really back when we first saw him again? The repercussions of this mistake are huge, and Lugal just makes it worse. And you thought Belet was full of rage before… Sik's changes happen slowly, but some of them are pretty cool. Okay, we have to talk about the asylum scene. What's Lugal's ultimate purpose? During that final confrontation, Sik wins in his own way. We thought we lost Mo all over again, but Sik wasn't gonna let that happen. How does this story end, and what could possibly be next? Interview with Sarwat Chadda (01:19:05) We're so excited to talk about Fury of the Dragon Goddess with Sarwat Chadda!! How does he get into (and stay in) the mood to write? Any go-to snacks? Sarwat gives us a great breakdown of what inspired this story. How did he balance the horror in this book for his audience? Which came first, this book or the short story with Rabisu? Sarwat talks a little bit about having Fury of the Dragon Goddess take place in London. And yes, he definitely remembers the Kane Chronicles! He also gives us a fantastic answer regarding the topic of repatriation. What did he want to accomplish with a character like Lugal? Can rage ever be used as a force for good? What makes Daoud so compelling? It's time to talk about those Percy Jackson references! Who would Sarwat choose from Greek mythology to have as a godly parent? Which Rick Riordan Presents book would he love to live inside? Any book recommendations for us? Has Sarwat thought about what comes next after Fury of the Dragon Goddess? You'll never guess how many more projects he has coming up! Thank you for talking with us, Sarwat! It was a pleasure. Feedback (02:25:58) We hear from a couple listeners about their experience reading Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 95, in which we'll discuss which Rick Riordan Presents characters would make for the best team-ups, before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 18! This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 16, in which Zia embraces the singed-eyebrow look. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:26) Happy birthday, Annabeth Chase! Read Riordan has an article so you can refresh your memory on City of the Plague God. If you want play D&D with Sarwat Chadda, you can learn all the details here. You can also catch up with Daoud and meet Dumuzi, thanks to Read Riordan. Sarwat had a lot of wonderful things to say about being a part of the Rick Riordan Presents family. The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi got a starred review from Publisher's Weekly. Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro share their favorite recent reads. Be sure to check out the Boston Book Festival, where Rick will be a keynote speaker this year. Read Riordan is hitting it out of the park with this Chalice of the Gods articles, including the one about the New Rome University course guide. We have SO. MANY. IDEAS. Would you want John Rocco to do a special edition cover for Chalice of the Gods so it could match your original series? Someone needs to update this Percy Jackson guide to the Met Museum. Don't expect to see Nico and Bianca in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We're so happy Glynn Turman got to pick the horse he's working with on the show. Let's talk about Percy Jackson at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Did you catch the new Percy Jackson poster and SDCC bag? Looks like there's a chance of Percy Jackson on Saturday. We get to see a slightly new image of the trio. And here's a picture of the Disney Books poster at SDCC 2023. Kristen breaks down new information about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, plus what it means for us at the podcast. Huge thank you to Mel for asking us to go into detail about all of this! You can find the SAG-AFTRA strike rules on Variety. The biggest one to keep in mind is that if the studio is asking you to promote something, DON'T DO IT. Yes, the podcast will keep covering all the Percy Jackson and the Olympians news because we are just fans talking about what we love. What's the future of these strikes? D.B. Woodside had some really important information to share about why SAG is striking. What does all this mean for Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Why isn't Rick saying much about the show? What projects are on hold and which ones can he still work on? Why wasn't Rick Riordan at Comic-Con? We'll keep you updated with more information once it becomes available! Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:08:50) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 16. Put us down for not wanting to be woken up the way Zia wakes Sadie. Why didn't Carter sleep well? How do we get some bottled Thoth Water? That tongue tattoo was pretty cool. Either do what Zia tells you to…or die. What are the magicians' specialties and which can we unanimously agree is a no-go for us? There are some really great moments while Carter and Sadie learn to bring hierglyphs to life with magic. We're so happy we learned about Luxor/Thebes in our last episode. How strong is Zia, exactly? It's time to duel, and it definitely does not go according to plan. We learn a little bit more about the Kanes' familial background. Iskandar is dead, and even though we saw this coming, it's still sad. It also spells major trouble for the Kanes. Zia's willing to give them a five-minute head start, and that's about as good as it's going to get. Feedback (01:28:42) Tim writes in with a little What If… for The Last Olympian. Caoimhe also catches us up on her reactions to the last few episodes and gives us a great idea for a future one. It seems Bobbi is as big of a fan of Hapshetsut as we are. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 93, in which we'll discuss City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 17! The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:53:31) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 10! If we could put out a cat signal, we would sleep in a pile of cats whenever we're sad. They're heading toward Central Park, and the entrance to the Underworld is RIGHT THERE. Bast isn't really good at making people feel calm. It's kind of weird to think your clothes could still carry residual life auras. The concept of good vs. evil and order vs. chaos is so interesting. Bast's combat magic is pretty epic. And now we want to watch Pacific Rim. If you're in an area with scorpions…be careful. Let's learn more about Serqet! Do you know the temple in the Met that Bast referenced in this chapter? In The Sun and the Star, co-authors Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro present an action-packed story to grip fans of Percy Jackson and all their favorite demigods—and monsters. At its heart is a story of first love, with all its excitement and anguish, and exceptional courage. As Rick Riordan shares, “It was really important to me that writing a book entirely from the perspective of two queer characters, I collaborated with a great queer author who could bring perspective, authenticity, and a different set of writing strengths to the project. Mark Oshiro is someone whose writing I greatly admire, and who also knows the Percy Jackson world intimately. MORE ABOUT THE SUN AND THE STAR: As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo—and, of course, being outed. But there is a ray of sunshine—literally—in his life: Will Solace, the stunningly beautiful son of Apollo, who happens to be his boyfriend. With his radiant energy, Will melted through the iciness to reveal that Nico actually had a heart. They've been a couple for nearly a year and have not only come to believe but proven, again and again, that together they can overcome any obstacle or foe. For Nico, epic battles are normal. Now, he's about to face a formidable one—and because he adores Will, he'd rather face it alone.

Prophecy Radio episode #83 discusses The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section, as well as features an exclusive interview with the authors. We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's official blog for the TSATS book tour. This week, we're skipping our The Red Pyramid chapter discussion in order to maximize our time with the new Nico di Angelo book! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:03:45) Do you want us to read Chalice of the Gods chapter by chapter in September? First off, we shoutout a couple birthdays and anniversaries from this past week. The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities is now in paperback (listen to Prophecy Radio episode #2 for our discussion). The Sun and the Star is a #1 NYT Bestseller! We do some cleanup following the Sun and the Star book tour, including this interview on Read Riordan. Rick also wrote a blog post on May 11 to talk about everything he experienced during the tour. Rick is already signing tip-ins for Chalice of the Gods, which doesn't come out until September. Read Riordan has an excerpt for Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older, out on May 16. If you need to refresh your memory on Ballad & Dagger, you can listen to Prophecy Radio episode #33. J.C. Cervantes has an adult romance, The Enchanted Hacienda coming out the same day! Be sure to enter Sarwat Chadda's giveaway for Fury of the Dragon Goddess. We also talk about our own giveaway we're doing for The Sun and the Star! The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:17:56) What is the book actually about? Go read the Sun and the Star book review that made mark Oshiro cry. Did we actually think it was Bob calling out to Nico? What did we think of Mr. D's characterization in this book? Were we excited to see Rachel again? Getting to talk about Sally Jackson on Mother's Day is next-level awesome. It was super interesting seeing Percy and Annabeth from Nico's point of view. Nico and Will's differing opinion of the Underworld was an obstacle, but not one that they couldn't overcome. Okay, so the Underworld is kind of scary, but it's also beautiful and full of life. Everyone loves an opposites-attract story, but what's that like in practice? Gorgyra's chapters were, surprisingly, one of our favorite parts of the book. It was so great getting to see Solangelo from their POV. If you've every experienced anxiety, depression, or PTSD, then the effects that Tartarus has on the demigods will feel very familiar to you. This book really tests Solangelo's relationship, but they continuously choose each other throughout it, and that's the most important part. The spoiler section starts at 00:59:21. We revisit the Mary Sue interview and get a little emotional about the title of the book. Persephone's Garden was a really wonderful, surprising addition to this book. Is there any world in which Will doesn't know “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” by Lil Nas X? It's time to talk about all of the wonderful and terrifying monsters in this book. The troglodytes were totally standouts, and we wouldn't mind seeing them again. Menoetes is dating WHO!?!? Amphithemis' character was so interesting, especially because his character didn't go in the direction we were especting. We discuss how the Aeternae ended up in this book and why they were the way they were. And here we thought Small Bob couldn't be anymore amazing than he already was. Bob went through so, so much while he was down in Tartarus. On the count of three, repeat after me: KAREN WAS RIGHT. Nyx really was the perfect villain for this book, and we have a wonderful discussion about how important it is to choose happiness. Can you believe even Nemesis and Epiales rebelled against their mother? We discuss Nico and his Coco Puffs. Didn't Bianca choose rebirth? What's up with her still being in Elysium? Hades was actually being a great father in this book, and we're all for it. That conversation between Piper and Nico at the end was SO IMPORTANT. The Sun and the Star interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (01:59:13) You can also read an edited transcript of it at this link. Rick and Mark had so many nice things to say to each other, and it was so lovely to witness. It's also amazing how much of a collaboration this story was, and we love it! Is there any chance that we could get more standalone novels in the future? (Karen has some ideas.) What did Mark and Rick learn from each other? Becky is a genius and she deserves ALL the credit. Oh, and we can thank Mark for Nico's flashback. We find out the exact moment Mark decided to do the book. That final scene between Nico and Piper is so, so good. Feedback (02:29:01) You can always leave comments for previous episodes! We love that a lot of older fans are finding our podcast. We're still totally willing to do that doughnut episode. Who had the better arc, Nico or Lester? Would we want a Thalia standalone novel? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 83, where we'll talk about The Sun and the Star (with spoiler-free AND spoiler-filled sections), plus an interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Why did Rick choose Mark to co-write this book with him? Can you guess the title of Mark's first book, which they wrote when they were nine? Mark drew the map that ended up on the endpapers, and the original version is hilarious and amazing. They were each asked which part of the book was their favorite. Becky came out on stage, and the crowd went wild! Karen teases the interview for the first time, but definitely not the last. Go read books from Rick Riordan Presents! Everyone loves Roshani Chokshi, as they should!! Don't forget that there are still graphic novels of Rick's books coming out! Everyone is super excited for the Kane Chronicles movie, and that made us so happy! We discuss the possibility that the Kane Chronicles movie might not get made (but we agree with Rick that we're guardedly optimistic it will!). What about the Daughter of the Deep movie adaptation? Unsurprisingly, everyone is super, super excited about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show on Disney+. Rick said his first reaction to seeing the principal photography was relief. Rick has learned so much from Mark's writing! Mark also got to talk about all of their books that they've published! Could you ever write the last line of a book first? How long has Rick known that Nico was gay? Prophecy Radio totally got a name drop during the event! You'd be surprised which is Mark's favorite dinosaur. Which gods would be their parents? Knowing which characters would be a Swiftie is apparently a big deal. Karen teases the interview once again, but it's going to be totally worth it! Did you see the selfie from the Boston tour stop? Stay tuned for our upcoming giveaway! The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:30:00) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 9. Who could be sabotaging the House and the kids? Wouldn't it be amazing to have a cat network? Bast is pretty spectacular, and we can't wait to see more of her. Who are the Carriers, and what is their purpose? We learn a little bit more about Bast and how her powers work. Does the Mist exist in this world, or is it something else? What's going on with Bast's role in the Kane siblings' mother's death? Feedback (01:46:36) Thank you for listening to the show, Teddy, and Karen is so sorry she couldn't meet you! Hope you had fun at the show, Elizabeth! And thank you to everyone else for the kind words about interviewing Rick and Mark! LJ wrote in with some wild theories about The Sun and the Star. We rectify a major mistake and read out Henry's The Sun and the Star theory. TJ writes in with some kind words about the podcast and asks us a very important question, which is accompanied by a super cute picture. Crystal is super excited for The Sun and the Star, and that makes us so happy! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 83, where we'll talk about The Sun and the Star (with spoiler-free AND spoiler-filled sections), plus an interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz.

Prophecy Radio episode #81 catches you up on everything you need to know about The Sun and the Star—with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section. We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick and Becky's trip to Ireland and Karen's plans for the TSATS book tour. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 8! Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:01:32) Sarwat Chadda received a starred review from Kirkus for Fury of the Dragon Goddess! Be sure to read Rick's April 22 blog post to learn about his and Becky's trip to Ireland. We get a miniature update for the adaptation of “My Life as a Child Outlaw,” the short story from Cursed Carnivals and Other Calamities. The Sun and the Star book tour is right around the corner! Stay tuned to win some swag from the book tour! Waterstones is offering a signed edition of the UK version of TSATS, so be sure to pre-order that ASAP! Plus, sign up for Rick's newsletter on his UK site for a possible look at The Sun and the Star chapter 1. Barnes & Noble is having a sale on pre-orders, so be sure to take advantage of it! Don't worry, we'll talk about Nemesis in the next section! Everything you need to know about The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:13:58) This first part of the discussion is just a refresher of what has happened in previous books (so there are no spoilers for TSATS). The Sun and the Star synopsis gives nothing away but definitely entices you to read. Read Riordan did an OTP timelines article about Nico and Will, which was super helpful. “The Sword of Hades” is a super helpful short story to read ahead of The Sun and the Star. In The Son of Neptune, Nico goes to Tartarus for the first time. Remember how great House of Hades is? Could you imagine if Nico had left forever after The Blood of Olympus? Nico is in a good chunk of the first and last books of The Trials of Apollo series. In The Tower of Nero, we learn that Nico is suffering from PTSD. Rick really set up The Sun and the Star in that final book in more than one way! The troglodytes are super important in defeating Nero. Which books are the most important to reread ahead of The Sun and the Star? At this point, we announce that you may not want to keep listening if you're avoiding all spoilers from the officially released articles. (Skip to the chapter discussion, if so!) According to Read Riordan, it's going to be important to know Bianca's di Angelo's backstory. We learned A LOT about The Sun and the Star from the Amphithemus entry on Read Riordan. Hypnos is gonna show up in the story, but we're much more worried about Epiales. Then there's Gorgyra, and all we care about is what the real estate prices are like at the edge of Tartarus. Maybe it's worth it? The Sun and the Star is a book for Solangelo fans. Will Gorgyra end up being an ally? Now it's finally time to talk about Nemesis. Who's in need of dealing with their inner balance? Listen to our full discussion of The Sun and the Star chapter 1. Who will be the villain in this story, and how big of a threat could they pose if this is meant to be a standalone novel? We read your wildest theories for The Sun and the Star. Will this all be a fever dream? Could Mark and Rick pull from the Orpheus myth for the end of this book? Will Bianca come back from the dead? We know we'll learn Will's sexuality in The Sun and the Star. What would Nico look like as a doughnut? Is Small Bob gonna be Big Bob now? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:16:12) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 8. Karen gets a flashback to The Land Before Time. Poor Philip of Macedonia. How cool (and stressful) would it be to have a little shabti go retrieve the actual artifacts you're looking for? Ermahgerd, serpopards! Amos' magic kind of sucks, tbh. Thank the gods for Bast! This chapter was super fun and had a lot of great moments and lines. Feedback (01:29:46) Thank you, Stephanie, for tuning in and giving us such a lovely compliment! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 82, in which we'll discuss the Boston The Sun and the Star book tour stop before discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 8. Prophecy Radio episode #77 discusses a little chat we had with Mark Oshiro about working on The Sun and the Star and their excitement for the upcoming book tour. We also catch up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog post and a few Read Riordan articles. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 4. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:36) We get off to a chaotic start, but what's new? Read Riordan asks, “Who Was Bianca Di Angelo?” When was the last time in the Riordanverse we heard about Bianca? Will we ever see Bianca's reincarnated soul at Camp Half-Blood? Can Nico recognize reincarnated souls? Read Riordan also shared “April Fool's Day Prank Plans from the Gods and Demigods.” We are very anti-April Fool's Day, so this will always be a safe space. Turns out “How to Tell if You've Become a Rick Riordan Presents Sidekick” is not a quiz. We discuss Rick's March 27 blog post, “A Spring Update.” Are you ready for all the books coming out this year? We run through all the titles and dates. Mythomagic (the production company) has been pretty busy the last couple of years! Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 is wrapping up nicely! We, once again, try to guess when it'll premiere on Disney+. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 is underway, even though this is not an official green-light. Could production on season 2 move faster now that they've already got sets built and characters cast? Could season 2 have a larger budget? Daughter of the Deep is moving along at a great clip! In fact, it's moving along a little faster than the Red Pyramid adaptation at Netflix. What about Magnus Chase!? We're big fans of an animated Magnus Chase adaptation, and it sounds like a lot of other people are, too. Be sure to catch Rick Riordan in conversation with Angie Thomas in NYC if you can! Mark Oshiro and The Sun and the Star (00:33:57) Did you pick up a copy of Mark Oshiro's latest novel? Check out Karen's spoiler-free Into the Light book review. You can also read the interview with Mark Oshiro about Into the Light. Karen also got to talk to them about The Sun and the Star. Mark says this was not a dream project—and their answer makes a lot of sense. Do you remember the Daughter of the Deep book tour when Mark was announced as the co-author of the Nico di Angelo book. If you have any doubts…Mark is one of us. Rick really made sure Mark was involved in every decision in regards to this book. Has anyone come close to guessing what happens in The Sun and the Star? Cross your fingers that Mark gets to come back and talk about The Sun and the Star spoilers with us! Fandom has really come such a long way, and it's exciting whenever you meet someone on your level. Hearing Mark's excitement for this book has us even more excited than we already were. As a fan, it's so important to hear that Rick and Mark had equal billing and both made decisions about this book. What are your completely unhinged theories for what could happen in The Sun and the Star? Did you catch the Rainbow Crate announcement for The Sun and the Star? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:06:07) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 4. We're doing Netflix synopses for our brief recaps now. BELIEVE CHILDREN. Is Julius' work bag invisible? What do we think of Gran and Gramps? Does Sadie have a dual citizenship? What's going on with Amos and the House? Do Gran and Gramps actually believe in the Egyptian gods? Who wouldn't want a bullet boat? There's definitely something weird going on with that cat. Hopefully we'll get answers once Carter and Sadie make it to New York. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 78, which will discuss the fanzine Olympus before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 5. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #76 dives into the late Lance Reddick's body of work, where we talk about his most iconic roles and which of his movies we watched most recently. As always, we also catch you up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including some updated information for the The Sun and the Star tour with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 3. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:03:29) Read Riordan has a women's history month spotlight on Gaea. This is your reminder that tickets for the NYC stop of the Sun and the Star book tour are now available. And if you can't see Mark Oshiro on tour for TSATS, be sure to find them on tour for Into the Light. Becky NEEDS you to listen to this Cinelinx interview with Roseanne A. Brown. There's a bit more news we're saving for next week, including a quiz and Rick's latest blog post. Lance Reddick (00:09:07) We talk about where Lance Reddick grew up and how he started off by studying music. The Yale School of Drama has had a lot of famous alumni at this point. Of course, Lance's breakout role was on The Wire, and we talk about how much we'd love to go back and watch it some day. And let's not forget Lost and Fringe. He also put out an album called Contemplations & Remembrances. We've talked a lot about his role as Charon, and also about his imposing presence and deep voice. That deep voice made made him the perfect choice for Commander Zavala in Destiny. Did you tear up when you read about how Destiny players saluted Zavala in the game on the day he died? Because we did. It's really too bad the Resident Evil Netflix show got cancelled. One of the best parts about digging through a prolific actor's IMDb page is searching for their forgotten roles. Did you know Lance made an appearance on The Nanny? Kristen didn't forget that he appeared in an episode of The West Wing. He also had several roles on various Law & Order and CSI shows—as do most actors these days. And let's not forget the throwback that is Beyoncé and Jay-Z's “03 Bonnie & Clyde.” If Karen gets the opportunity to talk about Numb3rs, she will. Can you guess which two roles Lance had within the Batman universe? It's time to talk about the Lance Reddick roles we were already familiar with. White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen kicked off two franchises that Lance Reddick has appeared in. And although Karen wouldn't recommend It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you can see Lance on that show, too. Now it's time to talk about the two new Lance Reddick movies we watched for this episode. Karen heard good things about The Guest, but Kristen isn't sure how she feels about it. Monster Party is not for people who don't like body horror. Lance might not have huge role in either of these movies, but like most of his other portrayals, he makes an impact. We talk about all of Lance's upcoming, unreleased roles. What are we expecting and looking forward to in Lance's portrayal of Zeus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Watch the video of Lance talking about his role as Zeus. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:58:58) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 3. We're so excited that we get Sadie's perspective in this chapter! Why are the police treating these kids like criminals? What's with the icy chill down Sadie's back? Is that inspector evil? Is he in on what's happening? Despite her complicated relationship with her dad, Sadie always wears her necklace. Have you seen an ankh before? Why even bother telling adults the truth if they're not going to believe you!? We talk a little bit about the ongoing conversation around ancient artifacts and repatriation. Was the inspector being super racist toward Carter? Did Carter tell the inspector some sort of cover story, or did the inspector lie to Sadie? Would Thalia and Sadie be best friends, or mortal enemies? Feedback (01:18:03) Henry calls us out on expecting answers in chapter 3. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 77, which will be a random catch-up episode and will include a portion of an interview with Mark Oshiro about The Sun and the Star before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 3. Prophecy Radio episode #74 dives into Egyptian mythology for the first time! We tackle some of the most important gods in the pantheon so we can be a little more familiar with the subject ahead of our Kane Chronicles discussion. As always, we also catch you up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including the official synopsis for The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as the dates for Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro's in-person The Sun and the Star book tour. Lastly, we kick off our Kane Chronicles read with The Red Pyramid chapter 1. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:06:48) Are we going to change the name of our podcast? Spoiler alert: No. If you're interested in Kristen's favorite Best Picture nominees for the 2023 Oscars, be sure to read her article! And don't forget to read Nichole's article about Everything Everywhere All at Once. Becky has been reading along to Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods 50 pages at a time, and it's really channeling the kids from the show. Read Riordan gave us the official synopsis for The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as an exclusive look at Rick's introduction to the book. If we weren't already excited for this one, Rick's high praise definitely would've done the trick. Rick also posted a March 9 blog post in which he gave us the dates for his The Sun and the Star book tour with Mark Oshiro. Yes, the rumors are true—Karen will be at the Boston stop! Keep an eye on Rick and Mark's Twitter for when the NYC tickets go live. These two will also be at the ALA conference in Chicago, which takes place June 22-27. This is for librarians, though, so it's pretty expensive if you're not a member! Introducing the Egyptian gods (00:18:32) This is going to be a brief overview because there are literally hundreds of gods we could talk about. Karen got her list from Britannica. Starting off with Osiris, did you know he used to be a king? Getting reassembled doesn't sound too fun, but at least it came with a promotion. But was he eternally moldy? Isis was Osiris' wife and embodied the traditional virtues of a wife and mother. She also had a lot to do with mourning and funeral rites. Even though she sounds a bit like Hera, she was more closely identified with Aphrodite. And her depictions with her son, Horus, could've influenced depictions of Mary with Jesus. Next up is Horus, the sky god, who was associated with war and hunting. So many of the Egyptians gods were shown as animals or as humans with the head of an animal. Imagine being raised to avenge your father's murder. No pressure! Did you know that the moon is actually Horus' left eye? Set is definitely NOT the god of desserts. We wonder what kind of mythical creature he was supposed to be. Have you heard of Ptah before? What about his wife, Sekhmet, or his son, Nefertem? Ra, the sun god, is one of the most well-known Egyptian gods, and he sounds a little like Apollo. Is there a reason why Ra sailed in a boat and Apollo drove a chariot? We definitely get a lesson on how Amun-Ra came to prominence. Who would win a fight, Amun-Ra or Apollo? How does Hathor differ from Isis? It kind of makes sense that Hathor was associated with cows. Next up is Anubis, which is another very well-known Egyptian god. Any fans of The Mummy here!? A lot of the gods are associated with funerary rites. Everybody gets a patron god, even embalmers! Thoth is the scribe of the gods, and we get Hermes vibes from him. He also has the very important job of weighing the hearts of the deceased. Have you heard of the goddess Bast? Even though she used to be associated with wild cats, she's since taken the likeness of a domestic cat. Of course Kristen has a West Wing story for this. It makes sense she was associated with Artemis, the hunter goddess. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:41:49) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 1. Kristen and Karen decide to share their dreams even though it has nothing to do with the book. This opening chapter really sets up the dynamic between Carter, Sadie, and their dad, plus makes you ask a lot of questions. It also totally gives us some Percy Jackson vibes thanks to the warning in the beginning. Does Kristen have any guesses as to what the item in the locker could possibly be? Carter and Sadie are very different, and they hardly see each other, so they're not even really friends. Do Carter's grandparents not like him either? We can't wait for the Netflix adaptation of this book! Muffin HAS to be important, right!? Guess which Kane sibling we relate to most? Guess what? Karen has totally seen Cleopatra's Needle in person! Does Kristen have any idea what's going on with their dad? What do we think of the siblings so far? Feedback (01:11:01) Caoimhe writes in to remind us that Hecate is associated with The Mist. She also gives us a great idea for a future episode of the show. We love hearing from our listeners! Henry also wrote in to bring up a couple fantastic points. Do we think they'll show Hestia in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Which book does Henry like the least? What about the most? Favorite character? How do we feel about a Percy Jackson audio drama? Katherine writes in to talk about why she loves Titan's Curse. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 75, where we'll discuss how Greek and Egyptian mythology may have influenced each other before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 2. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #73 looks back on our re-read of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Which book is our favorite? Did any of our opinions change now that we're older and wiser? We also tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including more information about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods and some books from a few Rick Riordan Presents authors we think you might like. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:59) We're back to talk about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods because Read Riordan had a little teaser about what the chickens will get up to in this story. Rick also wrote a blog on February 24 that gave us some information about the UK and international additions, as well as signed copies. We've heard variations of his answer before, but we discuss the latest bit of information regarding whether there will be more Percy Jackson books after Chalice of the Gods. If you love Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro, then Read Riordan has the article for you! Karen wrote a book review for The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi, so be sure to check that out. And don't forget that Lucha of the Night Forest by Tehlor Kay Mejia and Into the Light by Mark Oshiro both come out soon! Percy Jackson and the Olympians Retrospective (00:13:16) Now that we've finished all five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, we're doing a bit of a retrospective to see how we feel about them overall. Even though we all remember what happens in The Lightning Thief, we revisit it for reasons. This book is so good at introducing us to this world and the characters that occupy it. Can you imagine if someone was like nah, we don't need anymore books about Percy Jackson? These kids were SO YOUNG, and things just keep getting darker as they grow up. Moving on to Sea of Monsters, it's apparent that this book laid a lot of groundwork for character development. It was nice to see more Clarisse, but this book also brought us Tyson!!! He's so genuine and loveable. He was really the perfect character to teach Percy and Annabeth a valuable lesson. As we start talking about Titan's Curse, we confess which books are our least favorites (but we swear we still love them!). Annabeth is gone for SO LONG in this book. The Hunters of Artemis are so iconic, and it's pretty cool to meet and get to know Artemis better. On a scale from approachable to aloof, where do all of the gods land? We get to say hello to Nico, but we also have to say goodbye to Bianca. Battle of the Labyrinth is such a dense book because there's so much going on. We also have to balance a lot of characters in this book, both new and old. Nico has a lot of feelings, and we can't say we blame him. The Labyrinth is a character in and of itself. That battle at Camp Half-Blood was a lot more significant than we first realized. Now we're onto the The Last Olympian There's a lot of Backstory! in this book. We kind of love that the Battle of Manhattan takes up so much room. That final confrontation is iconic, and so is Percy's decision to turn down immortality. Btw, Percabeth is a go. All right, what's our favorite book, and why? It's difficult choosing a favorite character, but we've got some pretty solid options. There are so many iconic moments from the books, and we can't wait to see them in the show. We should've totally planned to pick out our favorite creatures/monsters, too. We have a lot of favorite quotes to choose from, and it was tough to decide. This time, we stayed away from Percabeth quotes when we could, since we just talked about them in the last episode. This is yet another reminder that Rick is SO good at first lines. Now that we've really dissected these books, did we have any changes of heart? Did anything surprise us? Lastly, what are we looking forward to seeing the most when we finally get to Heroes of Olympus? Feedback (01:29:51) Nicolaas writes in to give us his answers to all our same questions. Karen's in the hot seat…is she gonna be replaced!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 74, where we'll do an overview of the Egyptian gods before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #66 returns from our mini-hiatus to catch you up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're talking about The Sun and the Star, Rick Riordan Presents, Percy Jackson and the Olymjpians, and much, MUCH more. Plus, we read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 20, which contains one of the most iconic scenes in the entire series. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News Roundup (00:04:49) We're back! We had a nice little break, but we're super excited to jump back into Prophecy Radio and catch up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're totally going to keep talking about Greek mythology and Percy Jackson, even as we start in on The Red Pyramid. Let's kick this off by wishing both Thalia Grace (December 22) and Walker Scobell (January 5) a happy, happy birthday. We're so happy that everyone on set seems optimistic about getting more seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Did you see the stunt video that Alex Kyshkovych posted of Walker training for The Adam Project? Read Riordan posted some New Year's resolutions from the gods and demigods, as it's super cute! Except for that last part about Gaea. We find that highly suspicious. Karen has some qualms with their article about the five most underrated demigods, but she finds peace by the end of the discussion. As always, when we see a quiz, we've gotta take it! How did we do on the Rick Riordan Presents quotes quiz? Have you seen the cover to Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes? We're also very excited about Fox Snare, the conclusion to the Thousand Worlds trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee. It's so awesome that Daughter of the Deep is still on the New York Times bestselling books list. Becky has some stuff to say about Chalice of the Gods. Don't forget to pick up The Sword of Hades and get that sneak peek of The Sun and the Star. Karen took some SERIOUS notes about Mark Oshiro's Instagram takeover for Macmillan, so buckle in and made sure you pre-order Into the Light before March 28! We're counting down the days until Mark writes a Rick Riordan Presents book! We really loved the picture of Mark and Rick meeting for the first time. How could you not be jealous about Mark witnessing Rick's process and brilliance firsthand?? Why does Nico mean so much to Mark Oshiro? It's not too much to hope that because this process went so smoothly that we could get books for other characters, right? How crazy is the end of The Sun and the Star going to be!? Rick found it very important to make Will a big part of this book, and we are so excited about that. Do you think Nico is a…snake person!? Keep your eye out for more announcements from Mark soon! Walker confirmed there's only three more weeks of filming after they return from their break. Do we REALLY think the show's release date could be late 2023? Logan Lerman talks about how talented Walker Scobell is. If you're interested, here's a link to the Esquire article about him as well. Becky has some really good things to say about Alexandra Daddario and actors in general. And this article from Sydney Morning Herald was also very good. And that's what you missed on Prophecy Radio! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:28:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 20. This chapter is kind of a big deal, and there's a reason why so many people reference it all the time. Why did the Fates remove Luke's body?? Is this a big honor? That bit with the string from The Lightning Thief totally blows our minds. Is this conformation that Percy will grow old!? Will Hermes be able to help May now that the prophecy has been fulfilled? In your copy of the book, does Zeus fly a flag or light up the top of the Empire State Building? We love that both Hades and Nico were welcomed into Olympus as heroes. Why doesn't anyone stand up to Ares and talk about the fact that he's physically abusive to Clarisse? Karen has issues with the scene where Dionysus talks about Zeus reducing his sentence. Poor Grover is feeling so sad, and we hate it! You get a gift! And you get a gift! And YOU get a gift! Grover has had so much growth over these last five books. Hades isn't even ashamed he's the one who told Percy about making them swear on the River Styx. Percy really covered ALL the bases when it comes to his request. Would Sally have been upset if Percy had become a god, or would she have been relieved she wouldn't have to worry about him anymore? Thank goodness Athena spoke up on Percy's behalf. Percy is officially a Hero of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 67, where we'll discuss The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series.
