Today I've got two amazing comics creators on to chat with me. Comics writer David Booher is a regular to the show at this point and we have a new guest joining him, Michele Abounader. Michele has cooked up a new crowdfunding project on Backerkit called When I Was Young, a 100+ page queer comics anthology featuring short stories of inspiration, advice, and triumph where all profits will be donated to The Trevor Project to benefit LGBTQIA+ youth. David and Michele both are contributing pieces to the project along with some of comics big heavy hitters like Heather Antos, Christopher Cantwell, Stephanie Williams, and Jadzia Axelrod. Michele is playing the jill of all trades role as the editor as well. Each of these stories is deeply personal. When I saw the original solicitation for it, I jumped at the opportunity to support it as a backer and knew I wanted to have Michele on to chat about it. David was a delightful late add who was kind enough to come on to talk about his story Blue illustrated by yeti friend Jack Foster that will be a part of the anthology. Regret is a poison we too often sip from in our lives. Resisting its toxin should be easy, but it's a practice we must continuously endure. Thankfully, we have writers like Jadzia Axelrod, who offer stories as gauntlets for us to charge through in our imaginations. Hawkgirl: Once Upon a Galaxy, the latest saga from Axelrod and artist Amancay Nahuelpan, forces Kendra Saunders to reflect on her life and the many past lives that came before and embrace the choices they made as the villainous Vulpecula suggests disastrous shortcuts. This week's episode is a conversation we've wanted on the record for some time. Axelrod's Galaxy: The Prettiest Star, done in collaboration with Jess Taylor, profoundly rattled our perception of what was capable within the DC Comics universe. The comic was astonishingly additive, something you don't often see these days, and we were eager to experience where such a story would travel next. The recent six-issue Hawkgirl series delivers on that book's promise in a big, big way and then dares to add a little more. We chat with Axelrod about her commitment to continuity even when tempted by a retcon. Axelrod explains her passion for fairytales and why they offered Hawkgirl's Kendra Saunders the firmest footing to stand upon. We also discuss Galaxy's perfect pairing with Kendra and why her story suggested relief for both heroes as well as those reading their adventures. Hawkgirl: Once Upon a Galaxy is currently available in six glorious single issues, but it will soon be collected in trade paperback on June 4th. You should definitely pre-order the book, but you shouldn't wait either. Jump on those floppies, as our conversation with Jadzia Axelrod is full-spoilers. There is simply too much happening in this series for any elements to be left off the mic. Continue our conversation with Jadzia Axelrod by following her Twitter, Instagram, and Website. “Being normal was never going to save me,” says Galaxy the trans space princess protagonist of GLAAD Award Nominated graphic novel Galaxy: The Pretiest Star. “That's my 'with great power comes great responsibility' moment. That's [Galaxy's] superhero moment,” says co-creator, writer Jadzia Axelrod. Jadzia is the author of Galaxy: The Prettiest Star, a new YA graphic novel illustrated by Jess Taylor and published by DC Comics. Jadzia joins us to talk about creating this new trans (and not just metaphorically trans) superheroine, her creative process, some DC Comics queer history, why David Bowie works in a contemporary graphic novel and Hawkgirl's favorite football team. "Taylor Barzelay has the perfect life. Good looks, good grades, a starting position on the basketball team, a loving family, even an adorable corgi. Every day in Taylor's life is perfect. And every day is torture. Taylor is actually the Galaxy Crowned, an alien princess from the planet Cyandii, and one of the few survivors of an intergalactic war. For six long, painful years, Taylor has accepted her duty to remain in hiding as a boy on Earth. That all changes when Taylor meets Metropolis girl Katherine “call me Kat” Silverberg, whose confidence is electrifying. Suddenly, Taylor no longer wants to hide, even if exposing her true identity could attract her greatest enemies. From the charming and brilliant mind behind the popular podcast The Voice of Free Planet X, Jadzia Axelrod, and with stunningly colorful artwork by Jess Taylor comes the story of a girl in hiding who must face her fears to see herself as others see her: the prettiest star."

For our Origin Story segment, we took the opportunity to interview Jeff about how he prepped for this game with a lifetime of watching, reading, and studying superhero stories.Back IssuesMarvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross (1994). The influential, and optimistic, mini-series follows a non-powered photographer through his career in Silver Age Marvel New York, looking at super-people as they emerge and alter the city's history. (Not to be confused with The Marvels, a more recent comic about superheroes at war.)Astro City by Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson: a creator-owned, unified, multi-generational superhero story, as much about the city as about the heroes, and especially: “That Was Then” (2022), Family Album trade paperback (1997), Through Open Doors trade paperback (2014); stories about Jack-in-the-Box, a friendly neighborhood superhero with real-life family problems, or the Silver Agent, an era-spanning, time-traveling, tragic do-gooder (some of these stories collected in Shining Stars, 2014); the individual older stories and issues “Ellie's Friends,” “What I Did on My Vacation,” and “The Sky's the Limit.”Welcome to Tranquility (2007) by Gail Simone and Neil Googe. Action, detection and history in a retirement community for superheroes, with plenty of throwbacks and flashbacks to the eras when these superheroes were in their primes.History of the Marvel Universe (2020) by Mark Waid and Javier Rodriguez. In this week's episode, we offer a warning. The Bone Orchard Mythos from Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino represents a layer of dread not previously explored by the creators. The new shared universe from Image Comics is the first time Lemire and Sorrentino have fully plunged themselves into the horror genre.  Oh, you thought Gideon Falls was creepy? Sure, it got under your skin, but as you'll hear in our conversation with Lemire and Sorrentino, The Bone Orchard Mythos finds the collaborators daring to unleash a horror experience unlike anything else they've committed. Your first chance to dive into The Bone Orchard Mythos arrives on May 7th, Free Comic Book Day, when Lemire and Sorrentino unveil their Prelude single issue. The next chapter, the original graphic novel The Passageway, lands in comic book shops on June 15th and in bookstores on June 21st. Next, they'll drop their Ten Thousand Black Feathers mini-series in September. And that's just the beginning. Be sure to stay updated with Jeff Lemire by visiting his Twitter HERE, his Instagram HERE, and his Substack HERE. Track Andrea Sorrentino via his Twitter HERE and his Instagram HERE.
