They use patient-specific information obtained from the patient and their prescribers to cater patient-specific drug regimens. Pharmacogenomics is rapidly evolving, and this field can help optimize medication therapy using an individual's genetic code to identify opportunities for increased or decreased adverse effects or changes in efficacy. Pharmacogenomic testing technology has made conducting pharmacogenomic testing in community pharmacies possible. By Gregg Girvan and Avik Roy The United States ranks 4th in the World Index of Healthcare Innovation, with an overall score of 54.96, behind only Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Americans are usually the first to gain access to major new medical advances, advances often discovered at American universities and developed by American companies. As a result, the U.S. ranked first for both Choice (57.65) and Science & Technology (75.14). https://freopp.org/united-states-health-system-profile-4-in-the-world-index-of-healthcare-innovation-b593ba15a96 Vaccine ‘Deserts' Released in early February, the study, a white paper posted on the University of Pittsburgh's website, found that in 69 counties, Black Americans would need to travel farther to get to sites such as hospital outpatient departments, federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics, and community pharmacies that formed the early backbone of large-scale vaccination efforts. The study, which used a sample population and geographic data supplied by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Health Resources and Services Administration, among others, found that some of the worst so-called “vaccine deserts” for Black people were in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. In Lee County, Ga., for example, Black Americans are 825% more likely to live more than 10 miles from a vaccination location than whites. In Madison County, Miss., the figure is 976%. And in Chilton County, Ala., it's 1,193%, the study found. But disparities are not limited to the rural South, according to lead investigator Lucas Berenbrok, PharmD, an assistant professor of pharmacy and therapeutics at UPMC School of Pharmacy. “Of those 69 counties, 23 are in urban areas, some are in the West and Southwest, and a few are in the Northeast,” Berenbrok said. “The point this analysis makes is that our existing health care infrastructure probably isn't going to cut it in terms of achieving a good, equitable distribution of vaccines.” https://www.idse.net/Covid-19/Article/02-21/Pharmacy-s-Role-in-Addressing-Vaccine-Inequities/62669 This episode was sponsored by Ultiguard Safe Pack UltiGuard Safe Pack is the only pen needle product that comes with an all-in-one sharps container. Medical PotCast host Joe Friedman interviews Cannabis Industry Consultant Shanna Perry. For the last 10 years, Shanna Perry has been entrenched in the American cannabis industry. Ms. Perry has lived and worked in West Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Denver, New York City and in Las Vegas. After earning her degree in audio engineering and broadcasting, Ms. Perry served as Director of Events for five CBS AM/FM radio stations. After leaving that position in 2010 she became interested in learning more about the cannabis industry and how she could position herself for a successful career in the cannabis space. Motivated to self educate, she lived in Denver, NYC, FL, and Las Vegas. Each move brought new knowledge, new experiences, and a greater understanding of economics and the cannabis industry. In 2014, recognizing Nevada was positioned for enormous growth in both the medical and recreational cannabis channels, Ms. Perry took up residence in Las Vegas and became an original member of the Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Association. Pioneering herself into the industry's foundation, she was the first professional to successfully present and sell mainstream advertisers to a leading, Nevada-based, medical cannabis lifestyle publication. She moved easily from media to advising, honing her brand, SHANNABIS, at conventions and within the industry. Strategically using social media platforms enabled her to build her contact list along with her brand. Within three years, she became one of Las Vegas' most influential and trusted advocates for cannabis. As a bona fide consultant on all aspects of cannabis, Ms. Perry has served as an advisor to government regulators, business owners, law enforcement, physicians, and attorneys globally. She is known for her honesty, vitality, and passion for the cannabis industry. Her well-roundedness and education, coupled with her personal and professional experiences, are the cornerstones of SHANNABIS. Making her truly, one of the cannabis industries' most valuable resources. In anticipation of that double whammy of flu and covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, flu vaccine manufacturers have boosted production by about 15 percent, to record levels, with nearly 200 million doses for the United States. During the 2019-2020 flu season, more than the 175 million doses were churned out, industry officials said. Dr. Richard Harris M.D., Pharm.D, MBA joins the 'Transforming the Nation' series to discuss the controversial topic of sharing your faith, being spiritual, and understanding the balance between science, medicine, and God. Dr. Harris is the founder of "Great Health & Wellness" and has his own podcast, here: https://www.theghwellness.com/ The technological advances of the past century tended to change the focus of medicine from a caring, service oriented model to a technological, cure-oriented model. Technology has led to phenomenal advances in medicine and has given us the ability to prolong life. However, in the past few decades physicians have attempted to balance their care by reclaiming medicine's more spiritual roots, recognizing that until modern times spirituality was often linked with health care. Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the whole person—the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Such service is inherently a spiritual activity. Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, who has developed Commonweal retreats for people with cancer, described it well: Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak. When you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of the soul. Serving patients may involve spending time with them, holding their hands, and talking about what is important to them. Patients value these experiences with their physicians. In this article, I discuss elements of compassionate care, review some research on the role of spirituality in health care, highlight advantages of understanding patients' spirituality, explain ways to practice spiritual care, and summarize some national efforts to incorporate spirituality into medicine. Why Taking Care of Yourself First is so important to being the best healthcare provider possible. A special interview with a mission driven pharmacist who believes in helping other busy professionals on their life's journey. "Customization Creates Confidence" -- Ashley Dwyer, PharmD. Connect w/ Ashley on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.dwyer/?hl=en WEBSITE: https://thebigdaynutrition.com/about-me/ Ashley writes: It all started back in grade school, where I thrived as a mathlete and science nerd, but also as a little tomboy trying to beat the boys on the blacktop. My love for math, science, and sports propelled me through high school, where I played on several varsity sports teams, was a member of the math honor society, and where I chose my career as a health professional. After seven long years at the University of Florida, I graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacology. Becoming a pharmacist allowed me to live out one of my passions: helping others. It wasn't until I was halfway through pharmacy school that I discovered my other passion: health and fitness. After my first year of pharmacy school, I came home for summer break and met friends who were competing in NPC bikini bodybuilding competitions. I had never even heard of these or knew they existed for “normal” people like me. After learning the details of the competitions, my competitive nature took over, and I absolutely HAD to compete in one! After 17 weeks of intense training and dieting, I took first place in my category in my very first competition; I was hooked. Fast forward three years and three more competitions, I decided it was time to box up my bedazzled bikini. The amount of knowledge I gained as a competitor, on and off season, is invaluable. Self-control, discipline, fitness know-how, and proper nutrition are just a few of the key elements I learned along my NPC journey. What I also discovered was that competitions aren't really as healthy as one would think. Sure, I had a veiny 6-pack and practically no body fat, but I was also super fatigued and irritable. I looked amazing, but had no energy to go out and “show it off.” It was time to switch off the competing mindset and start focusing on creating a balance between looking good and feeling good. Not only did I do this for myself, but for my patients, peers, friends, and family. The wealth of knowledge from my past endeavors lead me to be the one they sought out for diet advice and tips for weight loss, and workout routines. Couple this with the fact that I was nearing 30 and ALL of my girlfriends were getting married; my expertise was heavily desired. I was ecstatic to be helping people I loved in an area I was super passionate about. My biggest addiction? The glow of confidence and gratification my client's radiate as they walk down the aisle, look in the mirror and pose for pictures. Thank you for taking the time to learn about ME! I can't wait to learn more about all of you and help you radiate that same glow! I do not believe in cookie cutter plans, fad diets, or crash dieting. I believe in giving you the tools to achieve your goals. By creating custom-made diet and exercise plans based on your current state and resources, it allows for a smooth transition and an even easier desire to stick to your plan. Confidence will stem in many ways, but I find these three avenues to be the most popular: 1. You will feel confident and in control knowing you have all the tools necessary to unlock your potential. 2. You will feel confident knowing I will be there 100% of the way fine-tuning your plan, providing motivation, and keeping you accountable. 3. When that Big Day arrives, you will glow with confidence due to your achievements. Your Big Day deserves your best you. What are you waiting for?! A PROPOSAL FOR SMALL TOWN INDEPENDENT PHARMACISTS A new trend has independent pharmacist = working directly with the businesses that are right there in the same community. While the small town environment is by its nature a concise marketplace, too often those local businesses get themselves into situations that does not make logical or financial success. Big insurance companies get involved, and suddenly money is going all over the country when it should be staying in your community. When we set up our managed care pharmacy programs, the pharmacist is no longer competing with mail order houses, and the locals are no longer paying up to 40 percent more for these prescriptions than you need to. The money is being kept in the community. Another big advantage is you take a system that has been depersonalized over the years and personalize it once again. Imagine – getting better care at a better price from your local pharmacist who is also your neighbor.
