“Perhaps the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.” This is a quote from the paediatrician, Rachel Naomi Remen, that my guest this week quotes in her fantastic new book The Impossible Question of Living Well: How do we hold on to what matters, while also knowing how to let go? Dr Helen Street has been banging the drum that living well should be a priority of educational institutions for years, but more importantly, that this is not a question of individual ‘hacks to happiness' as she talks about in this episode, but a fundamental rethinking of how much context plays a role in enabling or preventing possibilities for living well. It's Helen's second time on the podcast and I was so happy to be able to chat to her again about her . She is a social psychologist and educator and has worked extensively with schools around the world since 1999. She holds a position as Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, Graduate School of Education as well as adjunct research consultant for the health department of Western Australia's Centre for Clinical Interventions. Helen is the Founder and Co-Chair of the Positive Schools Initiative (PSI). Since it s launch in 2008, the Positive Schools Initiative has worked with over 26,000 educators from over 6000 schools and colleges; from around Australia and 15 other countries. Positive Schools Initiative is focused takes an evidence-based systems approach to building Contextual Wellbeing, positive mental health and resilience in school staff, parents and young people. Helen is a bestselling author and speaker and her most recent book is The Impossible Question of Living Well: How do we hold on to what matters, while also knowing how to let go? She is also the author of the bestselling Contextual Wellbeing: Creating Positive Schools from the Inside Out (2018). Her work has been met with international acclaim and has been endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama among many others. How can we become healers?   In these times of disconnection, we all search for sources of healing. One powerful, often untapped source is the healing we can provide for each other. For this conversation, I turned to my long-time medical school mentor, Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen. Rachel is widely known for launching the course The Healer's Art, which has been taught to over 30,000 medical students, including me. Now in her 80s, she has been a guiding light for decades.  In this live conversation, we explore deep questions: What is the difference between curing and healing? What is the role of love in doctoring? How is listening a form of healing? Rachel draws from her own life, including the harsh experience of being the only woman in her medical school class and living with chronic illness; while still painful, those experiences helped her understand who she is.  In an increasingly complex world, knowing ourselves and finding ways to express love is what this episode of House Calls is all about.    (03:40)    How Dr. Remen and Dr. Murthy connected through the heart and soul of medicine.  (14:01)    What is the difference between healing and curing?  (16:10)    What is a wounded healer?  (20:51)    What is the role of love in healing?  (23:00)    How does serving others help the heart and soul?  (24:28)    How did Dr. Remen find a place she really belongs, and how can we?  (30:20)    What does it mean to be one of a kind?  (34:30)    Why love is a blessing for a lifetime.  (46:22)    What has Dr. Remen learned from her cancer patients about healing?  (49:25)    How can we be source of healing for others?  (54:09)    What can help us break away from feelings of despair?      For more conversations, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls.    We'd love to hear from you! Just keep following this Sound, this Feeling. It's your torch in the dark place,in this dark night of the Soul. The soul is the Light. You are the Light. The darkness can't touch you, it can't see you. You can see it, though. You can learn from it. You can see what you're not-- those thoughts, those circumstances, those problems, those things falling down. And as you reach the end of what you're not, you're already being what you are. What God is. Follow the Sound,Home,Here,Now. Change everything. What then? How would I live if I was exactly what's needed to heal the world? These are very important questions."-Rachel Naomi Remen"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given to you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."-Rainer Maria Rilke"There is a message coming from beyond the stars, a communication emanating from the Timeless Realm to those lost somewhere in time, a gospel calling out to us from outside the multiverse and lower planes of creation. Kabir says, "Where else have you heard a Sound like this?"-@Santmat1"My teacher said, 'I would like to speak to you about God, but I cannot, because words are woefully inadequate.' So, we sat in silence, and the transmission happened."- @isha_das_craig_bullock"When it is time for something new, you will feel it. You will feel a desire to let go, to shed layers, to move, to recreate. You will know because there will be subtle shifts all around you. You will release the old because you are really clearing the path for what's ahead. Trust this process. Know that life does not take from us anything unless there is something else imminently awaiting its replacement."-Brianna Wiest"Just be calm and relax. You will get all your answers automatically."-Sri Sri Ravi ShankarSupport the show

Reflective writing is a tuning fork for the heart.  It is a portal to deep listening which is necessary to live a whole and healthy life, as healers and as humans. Today's special guest is Dr. Gail Wright, a pediatric cardiologist and ICU physician who is a disciple of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen. She is also Jessie's co-leader for the Honoring DIastole Retreats at Pie Ranch in Pescadero, California.   Reflective writing is a tool to help you put down the weight of aloneness, remember your wholeness and voice yourself into being.   Reflective writing is one of the few spaces where we as healers get to have our stories and our hearts be witnessed.  It is also an opportunity to bear witness to others.   Reflective writing is also a tool that invites a sense of possibility, especially when done at the edge of the continent- on a hilltop at Pie Ranch.   If you can write a list you can enjoy reflective writing. You might be surprised at the spaciousness and perspective that the practice of reflective writing inspires.   Join Gail and Jessie at Pie Ranch for a one-day Honoring Diastole Retreat. Join us on a sustainable coastal farm to nourish and heal individually and collectively. Join us to cultivate practices that allow you to open your heart. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/honoring-diastole   One day retreats are especially transformative because they don't separate you too far from your reality. The realization that you don't have to travel too far and you don't have to stay too long to feel significantly better, lighter and healthier is powerful.    Connect with Gail at www.redwoodresilience.com.   Join Saturday writing groups at www.writingmedicine.org. If you are in transition, coaching is also a super powerful modality to ease the bumps of the journey. Nancy Novack on My Best Healer Podcast, what an honor. She is a cancer survivor, psychologist, and mom. She said "I thought I had appendicitis. On April 29, 2004, I had pain on the right side of my belly that didn't want to go away. I went to my internist who examined me and immediately sent me for a CT scan … whatever that was, I did not know. The DiagnosisIn what seemed to be an interminably long time, she called me in and asked, “Do you want the good news or the bad news?”“The good news.”“You don't have appendicitis.”Wow! All right.“Ready for the bad news?”NO!“You have stage 4 ovarian cancer. Your liver is two times its appropriate size, more like a small watermelon. Your right ovary is the size of a grapefruit.”I said two now-remarkable things … “Thank goodness … it is not appendicitis! Delight is NOT decadent. It is sustenance. When we honor diastole, we honor ourselves. Honoring diastole is healing for our own hearts. A necessary, but often neglected, action for healers. Today's episode includes a special guest, Dr. Gail Wright, a pediatric cardiologist, a disciple of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, mindfulness teacher, and founder of Redwood Resilience. She also happens to be Jessie's friend, soul sister in many endeavors, and her co-lead for the Honoring Diastole Retreats at Pie Ranch. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of diastole in our lives, finding delight in the practice of medicine, and the why of the experience we provide at Pie Ranch.  Diastole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and allows the chambers to fill with blood. The idea of a heart needing to relax in order to continue to function properly extends to each of us as individuals.  Our hearts know that diastole should be 2/3 of the cardiac cycle for a long and healthy life. Most of us don't live a life that honors rest, refilling, and relaxing in this way.   A key eye-opening point made from the cardiologist's perspective is that diastole in the heart is actually only a matter of milliseconds.  Even small practices, seconds or 1 day, can make a huge difference in how we show up at work and at home. Listen to our conversation to learn why mindful movement helps you find the place between effort and ease and reconnect to the natural rhythms within yourself.   We share how reflective writing allows you to get back into the flow, be seen and known, and see and know.  We also discuss how mindful coaching helps you “wonder rather than worry."   Nature is a shared love of Gail's and mine and a huge component of why and how we collaborate.  Nature is an essential ingredient in all of my retreat offerings because it, along with mindfulness, coaching, and yoga, helps you live into a bigger version of yourself.  Gail reminds us that nature is a reminder of the rhythms of life,  that helps us “learn to stand tall, with dignity and grace, and drink from the clouds.”   Retreats are a way to honor diastole. They are an intentional gift for a healthy heart, mind, and spirit. When we retreat, we take a respite and create space for reflection. We would love to have you join us at Pie Ranch in the fall or spring, www.jessiemahoneymd.com/honoring-diastole or Jessie at Sagrada in either September 2022 or the spring of 2023  www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreat-nourish-and-transf...
