E777 POLICE USING TECHNOLOGY: LAW ENFORCEMENT AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Tactical Living

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2024 10:22

In today's episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, we discuss police using technology and how Law Enforcement and Artificial Intelligence is changing the way officers do their job.  The integration of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), into law enforcement has transformed policing practices, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and safety. Here are key ways in which technology and AI have impacted the field: Geo-Tracking for Enhanced Response: Geo-tracking technology enables law enforcement agencies to pinpoint the exact location of crimes as they happen, dramatically improving response times. Officers can be dispatched more efficiently, ensuring help arrives where it's needed most, swiftly and accurately. Drones for Surveillance and Tactical Operations: Drones equipped with cameras and sensors provide a bird's-eye view of crime scenes, search operations, and large public gatherings. They can navigate hard-to-reach areas, offering live feeds to command centers, which is crucial in tactical situations or when monitoring for potential threats in crowded places. Artificial Intelligence in Facial Recognition: AI-driven facial recognition systems are used to identify individuals in crowds, at airports, or in other public spaces. This technology has been pivotal in locating missing persons, fugitives, and suspects by analyzing video footage from surveillance cameras against databases. Predictive Policing with AI: AI algorithms analyze historical crime data to predict future crime locations and times. This predictive policing strategy enables departments to allocate resources more effectively, potentially preventing crimes before they occur by identifying patterns that human analysts might miss. AI in Forensic Analysis: AI enhances forensic capabilities by rapidly analyzing vast amounts of data. For example, AI can match DNA samples from crime scenes with national databases much quicker than traditional methods, speeding up investigations and helping to solve cases faster. Social Media Monitoring through AI: Law enforcement agencies use AI tools to monitor social media platforms for potential threats, hate speech, or plans for criminal activity. These AI systems can sift through massive amounts of online content in real-time, flagging relevant information for further investigation. Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR): ALPR systems use AI to read and process license plates on moving or parked vehicles, helping to locate stolen cars or vehicles associated with wanted individuals. This technology significantly enhances the ability of law enforcement to enforce the law and protect communities. Chatbots for Public Assistance: AI-powered chatbots are being employed by police departments to offer 24/7 assistance to the public. These chatbots can provide information on local laws, report filing assistance, and guidance on non-emergency inquiries, freeing up human officers for more critical tasks. Body-Worn Cameras with AI Analytics: Body-worn cameras equipped with AI can analyze video content for specific behaviors, objects, or events, aiding in evidence collection and review processes. This not only increases transparency and accountability but also helps in training officers by reviewing interactions and incidents. Gunshot Detection Systems: AI-enabled gunshot detection systems use acoustic sensors to identify and locate gunshots in real-time, alerting law enforcement immediately. These systems can accurately differentiate between gunshots and other sounds, ensuring a rapid and appropriate response to gun-related incidents. The integration of technology and AI into law enforcement represents a paradigm shift, offering unprecedented capabilities in the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of crimes. However, it also raises important discussions around privacy, ethics, and the potential for bias, underscoring the need for careful implementation and oversight. The world's most populous country adopted a comprehensive data privacy code in August 2023 – the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Join this episode for a tour of the law's main features. A departure from the EU's GDPR approach and from prior draft bills of the Government, India took a unique approach to protecting digital personal information of its residents. Instead of data localization, it chose to encourage global data flows under relatively flexible standards while requiring reasonable safeguards to prevent data breach. The law will come into force on a rolling basis in coming months. Stephen Mathias, Bangalore office partner-in-charge and Co-Chair of the Technology Law practice of Kochhar & Co., one of India's premier large law firms, explains the Act's main features. Learn the basic approach taken, not only to comply if your organization may be subject to its reach but also to consider how a vast country with highly skilled tech professionals chose to regulate personal data privacy, enable government use of personal data for security and public order, and embrace India's strengths in the data economy. Five years after coming into force, GDPR is planned to be "fixed" by the European Commission before summer 2023 (see https://www.politico.eu/article/brussels-plans-new-privacy-enforcement-law-by-summer/ for further details). Different from one might expect, the initiative doesn't question any GDPR fundamentals, but rather seems to have a rather limited scope: It will deal with discrepancies in enforcement by different European Data Protection authorities.only (see https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/13745-Further-specifying-procedural-rules-relating-to-the-enforcement-of-the-General-Data-Protection-Regulation_en). States of Journalism: A growing demand in a shrinking space

Motivated by the recent killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in occupied Palestine and what many have described as double standards in international media narratives on Ukraine versus the Middle East, The New Arab's States of Journalism series is a sustained, ongoing exploration of freedom, repression, and accountability in MENA and beyond, in global media landscapes. On this week's episode of The New Arab Voice, we're examine two stories from the Middle East and the ongoing struggle to secure press freedoms.First we explore the rise and repression of citizen journalists in Egypt. When the uprisings against President Hosni Mubarak began, numerous activists took it upon themselves to document the violations being committed, report on the changing landscape of the country, and the issues that mattered most to Egyptians. Since the overthrow of the president, online space and the abilities of citizen journalists have been severely repressed by the government of President Sisi. We spoke with Dr. Courtney Radsch (@courtneyr), a journalist and a fellow at the UCLA Institute for Technology Law and Policy. Courtney focuses on the intersection of technology, media, and rights, and is the author of Cyberactivism and Citizen Journalism in Egypt: Digital Dissidence and Political Change.Secondly, we examined the changes to press freedoms seen in Tunisia. The uprisings in Tunisia, and what followed after, were often held up as an example for the rest of the Arab world to follow. But, in the intervening years, the north African country has taken worrying steps back to a one-man rule system. Amid the political changes and uncertainty, Fadil Aliriza (@FadilAliriza) founded Meshkal (@meshkaltn), an online independent news outlet. We spoke with Fadil about Meshkal, the challenges they have faced, the changing media landscape in Tunisia, and what the future may hold for press freedoms in the country. You can purchase Dr. Courtney Radsch's book here. You can support Meshkal via their Pateron page. This podcast is written and produced by Hugo Goodridge (@hugogoodridge). Speaker: Professor Herbert Zech, Humboldt University, Berlin Biography: Professor Dr. Herbert Zech is Chair of Civil Law, Technology Law and IT Law at Humboldt University, Berlin and Director at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. Abstract: In the discussion about the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) on the one hand and access to data for training purposes on the other hand, one aspect has so far been neglected: the liability of data providers. AI training data have a different damage potential than data that are only used in "conventional" big data analyses. This raises the question of how existing liability rules apply and whether these rules should be changed. From a regulatory point of view, the parallel between intellectual property protection and civil liability should also be considered. This entry provides an audio source for iTunes. Phishing has been a staple in the cybersecurity threat landscape for decades. That means that phishing is one of the most dangerous activities to an organization's cybersecurity health. As a result, the need for proper anti-phishing hygiene and best practices is an absolute must. With that in mind, here are a few quick best practices and tips for dealing with phishing threats. Think before you click on any suspicious emails, links, or attachments.Know the Red FlagsPhishes are masters of making their content and interactions appealing. From content design to language, it can be difficult to discern whether the content is genuine or a potential threat, which is why it is so important to know the red flags. Awkward and unusual formatting, overly explicit call-outs to click a hyperlink or open an attachment, and subject lines that create a sense of urgency, are all indicators that the content you received could be a potential phishing attack and should be handled with caution.Verify the SourcePhishing content comes in a variety of ways however, many phishes will try to impersonate someone you may already know – such as a colleague, service provider, or friend – as a way to trick you into believing their malicious content is actually trustworthy. Don't fall for it. If you sense any red flags that something may be out of place or unusual, reach out directly to the individual through a different method (for example, if the potential phish was an email, call the person instead) to confirm whether the content is authentic and safe. If not, break off communication immediately and flag the incident through the proper channels.Be Aware of Vishing and Other Phishing OffshootsAs more digital natives have come online and greater awareness has been spread about phishing, bad actors have begun to diversify their phishing efforts beyond traditional email. For example, voice phishing, or vishing, has become a primary alternative for bad actors looking to gain sensitive information from unsuspecting individuals. Similar to conventional phishing, vishing is typically executed by individuals posing as a legitimate organization such as a healthcare provider or insurer and asking for sensitive information. Simply put, it is imperative that individuals be wary of any sort of communication that asks for personal information whether it be via email, phone, or chat, especially if the communication is unexpected. If anything seems suspicious, again, break off the interaction immediately and contact the company directly to confirm the veracity of the communications.Phishing may be “one of the oldest tricks in the book,” but it is still incredibly effective. And although it may be hard to spot when you may be in the midst of a phishing attempt, by exercising caution and deploying these few fundamentals, individuals and organizations more broadly can drastically mitigate the chances of falling victim to a phishing attack.---------------------*Adapted from content provided by the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA).
