Whoever first thought to take the sounds of gospel and add a beat underneath (I'm just gonna go ahead and credit the iconic Frankie Knuckles) must have been one of the greatest pioneers of house music of all time. Frankie once said that clubs are “like church... by the time the preacher gets going, the whole room becomes one.” House lovers often refer to the dance floor as church. And some of the most joyous moments I've experienced at a club have been courtesy of gospel house. I vividly remember going to Twilo and Body & Soul in the late-'90s and hearing tracks for the first time from Sounds of Blackness, Jasper Street Co., Su Su Bobien, Vernessa Mitchell, Barbara Tucker, and Kim English that completely changed my outlook towards music. I've been meaning to put together a gospel house mix for quite some time now (ever since playing a full gospel house set at the Church of Now at Burning Man in 2019), and a recent trip this holiday season to Portland to hear the Northwest Community Gospel Chorus gave me the inspiration that I finally needed. So, rather than your typical house, tech house, or disco set, here's 90 minutes (I could have easily made this 5 hours!) of pure praise for the lord - a dance floor journey of uplifting and soulful calls for love and redemption. There are classics here interspersed with brand-new tracks from this year, with reinterpretations sprinkled throughout. The nonprofit Chasing Health began as a way to bring healthcare into the community when many people have lost trust of doctor's offices or have barriers to attend appointments. This is what attracted Vernessa Mitchell to get involved. She spoke with Brea Barthel and Alisha Washington about the medical challenges of hypertension (high blood pressure), services available through Chasing Health, and collaborating with People's Health Sanctuary.

Summer is finally here! Pride season is always an exciting time of year to me, but this year I've been feeling an especially strong amount of emotion. I just turned 38 this month, and I think the combination of being firmly in my late-30's now and having just finished riding my 7th AIDS/LifeCycle has got me thinking deeply about a lot of things. I was (as many were) recently moved by the powerful message that the world got from watching HBO's "The Normal Heart." And then again watching HBO's "The Case Against 8" this week, on the eve of the marriage of Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami. I feel tremendous change in my approach towards interpersonal relationships right now as well — with an eye out towards both friendships and romantic love... with changing priorities in my life's work. Maybe it's just Mercury in retrograde, but right now I'm just feeling very deeply. I express a lot of that through music. Music is the motivation that keeps me going. Music is the crutch that supports me through long days. Music is the outlet that allows me to vent and to be creative. So with this podcast, I want to celebrate the beauty that exists in loving each other… in finding love in all of its strange forms and remembering what it means to love one another. It's almost that time of year again... another Dallas Purple Party is upon us. I've put together a little mix in honor of the weekend. Shouts go to Vernessa Mitchell and Michelle Williams, since they are performing. Of course, it just wouldn't be right to have a bunch of Michelle's music without a little Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland in there as well. In fact, Beyoncé's and Kelly's songs both have something in common with the Michelle songs they are next too. I'll let you figure out what that is... ha. :-) Also (this is strictly coincidental), there is something for you Glee fans... a little old-school Madonna, albeit a remake & mashup. Love how she used this mashup on her tour a few years ago and glad they finally came out with a real version. I always like my mixes to have a conclusion... a lot of times it's a song that makes you go, "Awwww." To review new music, I have a playlist I pile on a bunch of new tracks to listen to at the gym. The closing song caught me completely off-guard a few weeks ago while I was working out and I immediately knew it had to be the end of this mix. I just think it's sweet and uplifting.
