In June of 2001, 51-year-old Sharon Ware Davis dropped off her daughter at a bus stop near the Red Bird Neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. They exchanged “I love yous,” and Sharon went on her way. She was supposed to get ready for a training class for her job, which was an elementary school teacher. She never made it. In fact, Sharon hasn't been seen since. Her husband Ron Davis avoided speaking with police for weeks after lawyering up within several days of Sharon's disappearance. Family and friends say the man was abusive toward Sharon, who filed divorce from him just two days before she went missing. Her husband's behavior, and controversy surrounding nearly everything he touches, never stopped. In fact, it only got stranger. If you have any information about the disappearance of Sharon Ware Davis, please contact the Dallas Police Department at (214) 670-5389.If you're experiencing domestic abuse, please get help by calling the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 800-799-SAFE, or 800-799-7233. As the Amber Hagerman Taskforce investigated, they were attempting to leave no stone unturned. Privy to resources not usually readily available to local police jurisdictions, Detectives were utilizing science, mathematics, and old-fashioned police work in order to cover every base. It was, perhaps, the toughest investigation many of the very experienced policemen had ever worked. And it was personal. Nothing, however, seemed to pan out. Even with the identification of countless suspects, finding the evidence that nailed one of them was proving frustrating. What were they missing? If you have any information about the abduction and murder of Amber Hagerman, please call the Arlington Police at (817)459-5772 or to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward, please call Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at (817)469-8477Check out the always brilliant podcast Another Shade of Crime here: spreaker.com/show/another-shade-of-crime_1Please consider donating to the go fund me for Leon Laureles. You know her name. -- You're on your way home and suddenly, your phone buzzes. Everyone around you looks down at their screen, and you know it is now everywhere: on your social media feed, on TV, even on traffic boards. You don't pay much attention to all of it but still skim through the description while walking, just in case. When you finally look up from your screen, a weirdly familiar car catches your eye and you call 911. A kidnapped child has been saved thanks to the alert on your phone. This story is not uncommon, and it all started in Texas, in 1996 with the unsolved murder of 9 year old Amber Hagerman. Footage From: True Crime Daily, After Amber (WFAA), News Nation, Inside Edition, WFAA-TV, CBSDFW, WFMY News 2, WPLG Local 10, Daily Blast Live.

In late August 1981, after celebrating his 5th birthday only several days before, Burt Woodson disappeared in Mansfield, Texas. According to his uncle and guardian, Terry Lee Woodson, the sleeping boy was in the backseat of his car as he ran into a 7-11 convenience store to get a bite to eat in the early, dark morning hours. When he got close to home, Uncle Terry claimed, he noticed Burt was no longer there. After a relatively thorough search of the areas around the Woodson home and the 7-11 were conducted, police were puzzled. For more than 3 decades, Burt's case was forgotten in the public, until 2017 when Mansfield Police Detectives reopened the missing child's case. An arrest came not long after, and a slap on the wrist was meted out, but Burt's remains have never been found. If you have any information about the location of the remains of Anthony “Burt” Woodson please contact the Mansfield Police at (817)276-4700Please donate to help get #JusticeForLeonLaureles at gofundme.com/f/leon-laureles-private-detective-and-memorialThe Fort Worth Police Department still has nearly 1,000 unsolved cases dating back to 1959. September is suicide prevention month, and as the number of people affected by the pandemic increases, mental health issues skyrocket. Experts are extremely-aware of the challenges many faces with mental health. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. It is responsible for more than 48,000 deaths in 2018, resulting in about one death every 11 minutes. This month's podcast will discuss suicide, why suicide is the largest growing health problem, how family, friends, and communities are affected by this health problem. We also address preventative measures for those who suffer from suicide ideation and effective programs that address social ecology. Knowing the signs and systems of someone suffering from mental health issues such as suicide ideation can save a life and build a community. NiEtta will host our podcast to help us understand what to do (and what NOT to do) when a loved one is having thoughts of suicide. Her goal is to create opportunities for those in need of access to mental health resources and help them overcome challenges in order to lead healthy, productive lives. Our co-host, prominent psychiatrist Dr. Kenneth Rogers, joins NiEtta each month to help the community understand the complexities of our mental health issues. This month, our guest speakers will be Vanita Halliburton, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Grant Halliburton Foundation, a frequent speaker on youth mental health and suicide prevention in schools, at professional conferences, and throughout the North Texas community. Also, Dr. Brad Schwall, a Licensed Counselor and President & Chief Executive Officer of The Counseling Center. Dr. Schwall has provided counseling, training for educators, social and emotional instructional programming for children, and parent education in the Park Cities and North Dallas for over 25 years. He has served at The Center, Park Cities Baptist Church, and at McCulloch Intermediate School and Highland Park Middle School in the Highland Park Independent School District. Dr. Schwall offers tips on parenting, family life, and mental health in regular articles and frequent interviews on WFAA-TV, Channel 8.
The "origin story" is a superhero movie staple: how one everyday individual discovered extraordinary powers and realized her or his destiny of defending the city, country, world, or galaxy. In the journalism world, Tiffany Liou has one of the most inspiring origin stories you'll hear. She didn't go in J-school. She took a job in marketing. But she felt a pull towards news. She picked up an internship at a local affiliate but never quit her day job. She did both, overnighting as an assignment editor on the other side of the Bay Area. Eventually, she left the West Coast for a producer/MMJ position in West Monroe, Louisiana. That's how she started. Now she's an accomplished storyteller at one of the top storytelling stations in the country, WFAA-TV in Dallas. Liou is my guest on Episode 79 of the Telling the Story podcast. In this episode, we discuss Liou's origins in the field, but we mostly dive into her life today: as a solo video journalist during a global pandemic. It's changed and challenged all of us. Liou's perspective is one many will understand. She is also one of 16 interviews for The Solo Video Journalist, 2nd Edition, my updated how-to book for MMJs that was just published and is available for purchase. I finished the book just before COVID-19 took over our lives, but its core techniques and lessons remain relevant and even critical in our current world. Being a solo video journalist means living in a continual state of adaptation, and this is no different. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #79: Tiffany Liou, solo video journalist, WFAA-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.
The Jasons discuss the FACTS surrounding COVID-19 and preparations in Texas. They start their conversation with former WFAA-TV reporter Jonathan Betz, who now lives in Beijing, China and is currently under quarantine. To say Jonathan is feeling isolated is understatement. But he’s still getting his deliveries, which is an interesting part of life in Beijing. The Jasons then visit with Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins who talks about the lessons learned during the Ebola scare in 2014. The Judge says there was no outbreak blueprint prior to Ebola. But now we are ahead of the game because we have plans in place to deal with outbreaks, thanks to the 2014 scare. Transparency is key, the Judge says, in keeping the public calm. He says so far, the state is doing everything it needs to do to protect its citizens. And throughout the podcast, you’ll hear from Dr. Clinton Haley, an infectious disease expert in Dallas, including what he is telling his own family about COVID-19. The most powerful 60 minutes I watched last year came from two storytellers at their best. John Sharify has won umpteen awards through a reporting career that has spanned decades. Joseph Huerta is assembling an equally impressive resume as a photojournalist, now at WFAA-TV in Dallas. Last year, for their final story together at KING-TV in Seattle, Sharify and Huerta produced an hour-long documentary about a man named Bob. That man, 75 years old and diagnosed with terminal cancer, had chosen to end his life. Bob Fuller planned to utilize Washington's Death with Dignity Act to request a lethal dose of medication on a date of his choosing. Several months before that date, Fuller reached out to Sharify to see if his story was worthy of being told. Sharify knew he wanted to tell it. He teamed with Huerta to produce "Bob's Choice," which is available in full on YouTube. It is stirring, touching, moving, and just about every other emotional adjective you can name. It is also musical, downright funny at times, and a thorough look at a difficult subject. Sharify and Huerta are my guests on Episode #74 of the Telling the Story podcast. This is among the longest episodes I've done. That's partly because of having multiple guests, but it's mainly because this subject cannot be rushed. Sharify and Huerta discuss their many storytelling decisions on "Bob's Choice," but they also open up about their own emotional journeys and the experience of watching someone voluntarily - but peacefully among family and friends - take his own life. The discussion is heavy, but it's worth it. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #74: John Sharify & Joseph Huerta, “Bob’s Choice” appeared first on Telling The Story.
Feazell announced his candidacy for District Attorney of McLennan County in Waco, Texas in 1982. He would go on to win the election against the incumbent district attorney and became one of the youngest to hold the position in McLennan County. During his first term as District Attorney, Feazell tried the 1982 Lake Waco Triple Murders. In 1984, a jury found David Wayne Spence guilty of the murders and sentenced him to the death penalty. A chronicle of the Lake Waco Murders can be found in the Edgar Award-winning book Careless Whispers by Carlton Stowers.Feazell notes on his website that he is "now a vocal advocate against the death penalty."In 1984, after Henry Lee Lucas claimed to have killed over 300 people across the country, the Texas Rangers announced numerous murders to have been solved. Three of these announced murders were in McLennan County. This prompted Feazell to begin investigating the claims. This resulted in the Lucas Report. The report suggested that Lucas could not have committed some of the murders to which he had confessed. A decision afterwards resulted in Feazell's arrest. There were nineteen agents in town for Feazell’s arrest and the search of his office and home.Feazell's arrest came seven weeks before election day. Voters in McLennan County re-elected Feazell for another term. During the criminal investigation leading up to Feazell’s indictment, a reporter from Dallas television station WFAA-TV named Charles Duncan ran an eleven-part series about Feazell, which later led to a libel judgement in favor of Feazell worth $58 million. This series was the only evidence shown to the federal grand jury that indicted Feazell.Feazell was found not guilty of all charges on June 29, 1987. Feazell then returned to work as District Attorney of McLennan County. On September 13, 1988, Feazell sent out a press release stating he would be resigning as District Attorney.Feazell then began representing Lucas in all of the still-pending murder cases he had confessed to around the country. Feazell spent much of the 1990s representing Lucas to ensure he was not convicted based on any more false confessions. The work done by Feazell and others cast enough doubt on the validity of the Lucas confession to the Orange Socks murder case that in 1998 then-Governor George W. Bush commuted Lucas’s death penalty to life imprisonment. In 1991, represented by former U.S. Attorney Gary Richardson, Feazell was awarded a $58 million judgment for libel charges against WFAA-TV, at the time the largest libel judgment in U.S. history. As a result, he was cited in the 1993 edition of Guinness World Records for largest defamation lawsuit in history. In the 21st century, Feazell formed his own law office, The Law Offices of Vic Feazell with offices presently in Austin and Waco, Texas. The offices work primarily with personal injury cases and occasionally criminal cases. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Her first job was as a copy editor for UPI in Dallas. She served as the Morning New U.S.-Mexico border bureau chief, based in El Paso. Her research interests include the intersection of oral history and journalism, U.S. Latinos and the news media, both as producers of news and as consumers. Rivas-Rodriguez founded the Voces Oral History Project (formerly the U.S. Latino and Latina World War II Oral History Project) in 1999, which has videotaped interviews with over 960 men and women throughout the country. Stories based on those interviews are written mostly by UT journalism students, as part of their coursework. The project has several components designed to reach audiences ranging from school children, to academics, to the general public. Voces has organized conferences, produced books and mini-documentaries, co-produced a two-act play, (through Arizona State University Public Events and the University of Texas' Performing Arts Center), created educational materials. Voces has become an international resource for documentary film producers, scholars, journalists and the general public. Rivas-Rodriguez has been active since her college years in volunteer efforts to bring greater diversity to the news media. She was on the committee that organized and founded the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 1982. Adrian Villegas is the star and playwright of the one-man comedies "Six Mexicans Named Gonzalez" and "Barrio Daze" and Artistic Director of Austin, Texas’ Emmy-nominated sketch troupe The Latino Comedy Project (LCP). The LCP's critically-acclaimed 2017 sketch show “Gentrif*cked” enjoyed sold-out runs from Texas to California, receiving “Best Of Austin” recognition by Austin Chronicle critics. The LCP’s most recent production “Estar Guars: A May The Fourth/Cinco De Mayo Comedy Fiesta” enjoyed a sold-out run in spring of 2019 and will become an annual event returning in 2020. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the LCP as “hilarious” and “murderously funny.” The LCP’s YouTube videos have received over fourteen million views worldwide. The LCP cast also co-created an MTV3 comedy ad campaign, which was nominated for an Emmy Award. A few weeks ago, I raved about a half-hour special ran by WFAA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Dallas, at the end of last year. It featured a compilation of stories shot, written, and edited by widely acclaimed feature reporter Mike Castellucci. And his camera? It was the one on his iPhone. Castellucci has become well known in Dallas -- and, now, among TV news reporters and photographers nationwide -- for his compelling piece of boundary-pushing storytelling. His features actually appear quite straightforward until you realize the equipment he used to shoot them. But give him credit: he saw a need and attacked it, fearlessly flying into both multimedia journalism and iPhone videography. He wound up with an impressive result -- and a powerful niche in his market. Castellucci joins me for Episode #27 of the Telling The Story podcast. "People ask me why," he said, "and I think it was [because of] two reasons. One: I wanted to be first. And, the challenge of it ... I had been doing stories on my iPhone 4, and I just said, 'Let's take it 19 steps further.'" Here is a reporter who has had plenty of success in various markets, but he chose to take on a challenge many journalists would reject. He deserves some major kudos. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #27: Mike Castellucci, reporter/anchor, WFAA-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.

Murrow award for his work as editor on the WFAA documentary “War Stories”.
