Phil Waugh was able to follow a clear pathway from being a ballboy and then playing for the Warringah Rats to eventually joining the Wallabies. These days the connection between community and professional rugby aren't as clear. In today's episode, we talk with Phil about the importance of grassroots rugby and we ask Phil, a non-executive director for Rugby Australia, for insights on where the organisation is headed. Phil discusses the challenges that Rugby Australia is facing and how it's leaving stormy waters and shifting its attention from addressing controversy and back onto the game. Reflecting on the tenure of ex-Rugby Australia CEO, Raelene Castle, Phil provides an optimistic view on why the community was so polarized — it shows how much Australians care about the game. After chatting about what Phil is looking for in a new Rugby Australia CEO, we look at the struggles that they will need to overcome. Mirroring the conversations that we've had in our previous episodes, Phil agrees that investing in grassroots rugby should be Rugby Australia's number one priority. Phil then provides his take on why the 2027 World Cup bid is so important for community rugby before explaining why making domestic rugby the best in the world will solve all of Australian rugby's financial woes. Tune in to hear more of Phil's insider perspectives on the world of rugby! Key Points From This Episode: How important club and school rugby was to Phil's childhood. The need to connect community rugby back to professional rugby.Unblurring the lines when having young players represent their community.  Phil's experience working within Rugby Australia and the challenges they've faced. How the polarized reactions to Raelene Castle's tenure shows how much people care about the game. What rugby is to Phil; “our game is about community.”What Phil is looking for in a new Rugby Australia CEO and why the job is so difficult. Hear how far along Rugby Australia is in appointing a new CEO.Why investing in grassroots rugby is Rugby Australia's number one priority.      What Rugby Australia's mission should be regarding the sport. Questions around if investing in the 2027 World Cup bid is a reasonable use of funds. How to keep players happy, remunerated, and playing in Australia. Why increasing the calibre of Australian rugby will bring money back to the sport. How discussions with broadcasters have been progressing. What Phil would do if he were appointed CEO of Rugby Australia.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Phil Waugh LinkedInNarrabeen TigersWarringah RatsThe Shore School

This episode of the New Normal Project is all about the brain and keeping your brain healthy. It features Phil Dobson who is the creator of BrainWorkshops, the mission of which is to help people get more from their brains. Phil used to be a musician. But when he badly broke his ankle over a decade ago, his career and life radically changed. He trained as a clinical hypnotherapist, set up a practice in London, and rapidly recognised that many of the people he saw knew very little about how their brain functions; and how they could work on improving and maintaining their brain health. He saw many people struggling with sleep, who were significantly stressed, and who seemed to have their brains working against them rather than with them. Phil began to work with businesses, teaching groups of people how to manage stress and to improve their sleep, and as he learnt more about neuroscience and about cognitive and behavioural psychology, he turned this into BrainWorkshops, where he now provides online material, a book, and physical workshops, all loaded with applicable techniques designed to provide people with a scientific approach to optimising mental performance in the modern workplace. Phil works with businesses all over the world, and when I heard him speak eloquently at a medical conference last March, I asked him to come on the podcast. In the episode we cover: Phil’s transition from a musician to a brain coach His recently published “The Brain Book” and what's in it The 5 key components to maintaining your brain fitness 3 ways you can master the stress your brain is under The beneficial effect of exercise for your brain The importance of sleep and preventing sleep deprivation His number 1 tip for helping you get more sleep The value of challenging your brain with novelty & learning Understanding circadian rhythms to be more productive His recommended steps to working smarter Dealing with the distractions of modern life How digital technology may influence your ability to master your own reactions The difference between mindfulness and focused meditation How Phil practices meditation and mindfulness in his life The value of mental rehearsal and why elite sports performers use it What Phil does on a daily basis to help his own brain Please enjoy listening to Phil Dobson.   Live well, feel well, do well.   Andrew Davies   --------------------   About the New Normal Project podcast: The podcast is aimed to inspire and empower you to live a life of optimal health, fitness and wellness, by hearing scientific evidence, experience-based information and real-life stories in the areas of the lifestyle pillars such as nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, sleep, connection and purpose. Phil Hall is the author of, among other titles, a book called The Weirdest Movie Ever Made: The Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot Film. Phil is a film writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, New York Daily News and Wired, and he is the host of the podcast “The Online Movie Show with Phil Hall”, which is available on SoundCloud. What Phil has done in this book is look at the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film from a technical filmmaking standpoint and as a cinematic and cultural artifact. He also looks at the men who made the film and the details of their story before, during and after their infamous Bigfoot footage became a meme. We’re not too interested, for the purpose of this discussion, in the “authenticity” of the film. Whether the footage is real or a hoax doesn’t matter. Because this is a piece of art whose impact can be felt beyond belief systems. At the end of the day this is just a film, a movie. And as Phil says, it’s perhaps the weirdest movie ever made. Phil Haack joins the podcast to discuss DevOps at GitHub!   Phil has an interesting and extensive career background. He started out as a Manager of Software Engineering back in 1997. Since then, he’s done a lot — but some of his recent highlights include: being the main Program Manager at Microsoft from 2007-2011 (responsible for ASP.NET MVC and NuGet), and leading the Client Apps team as Director of Engineering at GitHub. Now, most recently, he has founded his own company, Haacked, which he started to mentor software organizations to be the best version of themselves.   In today’s episode, your host, Jeffrey Palermo, and Phil Haack, dive deep into discussing DevOps at GitHub. They talk about his role as Director of Engineering; how GitHub, as a company, grew while Phil worked there; the inner workings of how the GitHub website ran; and details about how various protocols, continuous integration, automated testing, and deployment worked at GitHub.   Topics of Discussion: [:48] About today’s episode with Phil Haack. [1:10] Phil talks about how he became the Program Manager at Microsoft in charge of ASP.NET MVC and NuGet, and what the role entailed. [4:00] The transformation Phil helped lead that continues to affect .NET developers today! [5:35] Phil shares the high points of his career at GitHub. [7:56] How Phil’s role at GitHub developed, and how (and why) GitHub went from “no managers and no meetings” to hiring on managers and starting meetings. [12:10] When did GitHub start to distribute regionally? [13:43] How many leased offices did GitHub crop up while Phil worked there? [15:25] What Phil is currently working on since leaving GitHub! [17:27] About the new book Phil is writing about GitHub. [20:07] Major strategic decisions and key aspects that gave GitHub the ability to put out features at a really fast clip for a really long time (with an incredible quality track record to boot!) [24:18] A word from The Azure DevOps Podcast’s sponsor: Clear Measure. [24:44] Architecturally, is GitHub.com one website or essentially two hundred different web applications that make up all the URLs of the website? [26:50] Was there a standard pipeline structure that GitHub maintained (or a common set of steps), or was it moreso a ship-it-however-you-can protocol per service? [27:50] If Phil had multiple services in the client application, did he have a separate Git repository for each one of those, OR, one Git repository for his team with multiple, independent services? [29:52] Did every continuous integration build have its own Git repository? [32:30] What types and quantity of automated testing did Phil pack into the continuous integration (CI) build? [33:48] Phil highlights some significant things that happened in the CI build step. [34:31] Did Phil find any good frameworks that worked out in the UI space? [35:02] What an automated test can’t tell you and why it’s so crucial to have a really good tester! [36:15] When they did have automated deployment between environments, what tools and methods did Phil use for those deployments? [38:04] For the services they were going to deploy to GitHub servers, how many environments did Phil set up in the deployment pipeline ahead of production? [41:07] The major tools on the deployment side when Phil was working at GitHub. [43:44] What Phil recommends listeners to follow-up on to continue their research!   Mentioned in this Episode: Azure DevOps Clear Measure (Sponsor) Phil Haack (LinkedIn) Haacked MVC Framework GitHub for Dummies, by Sarah Guthals and Phil Haack Hubot Ruby on Rails Scientist.NET Electron ChatOps   Want to Learn More? On this episode I interview with Phil White, co-author of several brilliant books including Unplugged with Andy Galpin & Brian McKenzie, Game Changer with Fergus Connolly, 17 hour fast with Dr Frank Merritt - challenging some of our assumptions. Background Phil was a guest on the show in Series 1 (episode 5) and we pick up where we left off last time; talking about technology and social media and the impact that it's having on our mental health. Having taken a 30 day sabbatical from all social media as an experiment whilst working alongside Kenny Kane, Phil has found it hard to pick up social media again and re-adjust to having that back as part of his life. During the 30 day period he found himself challenging some assumptions and questioning the value and purpose of posting stuff on social media at all. Discovery One of the things that Phil has been able to rediscover is the art of what he calls; long form conversation. Conversation whereby you are looking the other person in the eye, gauging response and observing body language as well. Ask yourself; what is it taking you away from? This is beautifully highlighted and illustrated by the 'Device free dinner' Campaign in which Will Ferrell is the star. What Phil keeps seeing and coming back to is 'long form'. Magazines that he writes for have shifted their focus from short articles or hacks to now wanting more journal type articles. He says; One of the reasons that podcasts like this are so popular and some of those in the US are massively popular like Tim Ferris and Joe Rogan is that people love them. They love them because they take the place of conversation. Final take-away Take a daily walk. 20-30 minutes ideally in nature. Fitness + Technology

For episode 57 we're exploring the dynamic world of sports science at the crossroads of technology with Emmy award-winning writer and the author of "Unplugged," Phil White. In this podcast we're talking about the connections between mindfulness and technology when it comes to breathing, eating, moving, sleeping, and exercising including the relationship of health club and fitness facilities and devices. We also learn from Phil about the importance of what he calls having a "white belt mentality" when it comes to both fitness and technology, and why he believes that technology's best use case in fitness is to identify a movement fault that is potentially harmful to a client, know what the correct solution is, and to have the client implement that solution. For successful coaches and trainers, we uncover why fitness technology must only be a tool in a professional's toolbox to help inform, educate, and increase self-awareness to get a client to a place where they are actually independent and no longer need that technology. When it comes to sports science being fueled by technology, what are the real game changers and the most important aspects of consciously applied devices and software to truly support and uplift the human inside and outside the club?  The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness pros in this episode with Phil white. About The Book: Unplugged: Evolve from Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, & Consciousness In the first quarter of 2016, Americans bought 19.7 million fitness wearables, an increase of 67 percent over the previous year. By 2020, the global market for fitness-focused apps and devices is expected to grow to $30 billion. This means that more than ever, we’re looking at our wrists not only to check the time, but also to see how much we’ve moved, monitor our heart rate, and see how we’re stacking up against yesterday’s tallies. As a result of our fitness tech addiction, we’ve lost awareness of what we’re doing, how we’re feeling, and what’s going on around us. This is bad enough in the gym, but when we get outside, the constant checking of a tiny screen truly wreaks havoc, downgrading what should be a rich experience into yet another task we need to complete to meet our daily goals. And if we fall short, we feel inadequate. There’s also the issue of data inaccuracy, with many device makers now admitting that their gadgets provide only estimates. So why do we continue to obsess over data and treat it as gospel truth?    It’s time to stop, take a breath, and hit the reset button in a big way. Unplugged provides a blueprint for using technology to meet your health and performance goals in a much smarter way, while reconnecting to your instincts and the natural world. In addition to sharing the performance expertise of Brian Mackenzie and the scientific insight of Dr. Andy Galpin, Unplugged features exclusive stories and advice from elite athletes and world-renowned experts like Laird Hamilton, Tim Ferriss, Kai Lenny, Kelly Starrett, Steven Kotler, Erin Cafaro, Lenny Wiersma, Dr. Frank Merritt, and Brandon Rager. About Phil White Phil White is an Emmy-nominated writer who frequently contributes to The Inertia, SUP the Mag and Canoe & Kayak. He is the co-author, with Dr. Kelly Starrett, of the forthcoming books Flight Plan and Waterman 2.0, and is also collaborating on Game Changer with University of Michigan football performance director Dr. Fergus Connolly and Bridging the Gap with Sue Falsone, the first female athletic head trainer in Major League sports. His other books include Whistle Stop, which Larry King said, “I can’t put down,” and Our Supreme Task, which The Times Literary Supplement called “Illuminating.” About "Game Changer"  As the rewards for winning have increased, it’s no surprise that sports team budgets have followed suit. Sure, the athletic program at the University of Texas brought in $161 million last year, but the Longhorns also spent $154 million over the same period. Fifteen other college athletics program also racked up over $100 million in annual expenses. But that’s child’s play compared to the outgoings at the world’s most valuable soccer team, Manchester United, which spent more than $500 million in 2015.  The trouble is that all this spending often fails to yield better results. Teams in all sports have tried just about every gimmick to “hack” their way to better performance. But as they’ve gotten stuck in stats, mired in backroom politics, and diverted by the facilities arms race, many have lost sight of what should’ve been their primary focus all along: the game itself.  In Game Changer, Fergus Connolly shows how to improve performance with evidence-based analysis and athlete-focused training. Through his unprecedented experiences with teams in professional football, basketball, rugby, soccer, Aussie Rules, and Gaelic football, as well as with elite military units, Connolly has discovered how to break down the common elements in all sports to their basic components so that each moment of any game can be better analyzed, whether you’re a player or a coach. The lessons of game day then can be used to create valuable learning experiences in training, evaluate the quality of your team’s performance, and home in on what’s working and what isn’t.  Game Changer also shows you how to expand training focus from players' physical qualities to also advance athletes technically, tactically, and psychologically. His TTPP Model not only helps players continually progress but also stops treating them like a disposable commodity and instead prioritizes athlete health. Listen To Episode 057 As Phil Uncovers Why Phil partnered with Coach Fergus Connolly to write Game Changer Why when it comes to fitness technology Phil believes that for bio hacking or any "hacks" are only a short-term solution and are not sustainable for a life of health Understanding the white belt mentality: being humble in your service and growth in a career Training: RPE rate of perceived exertion vs. MEPS or HRV Why Phil believes one of the most important coaching aspects for trainers is to stop trying to reduce everything to the physical Exploring the Technical, Tactical, Psychological and Physical aspects of Game Changer Quantitative vs. Contextual when we view the lens of fitness technology  The Six Laws of Winning:  The Law of Knowledge The law of Human Superiority The Law of Intensity & Quality The Law of Individualization The Law of Preparation  The Law of Support  Actionable steps for club owners, operators, and fitness professionals around technology and members The role of emotional intelligence in the age of exponential technology Going back to the basics: eating, moving, breathing, sleeping, human connection with specialized training Why successful fitness trainers and clubs will encapsulate technology into a wellness ecosystem rather than just being fitness specific What Phil beliefs about college athletics that transferred to the fitness industry in both monetary concern and client care Parting guidance for owners and operators in 2018 Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Emotional intelligence is becoming a more valuable skill set every day in a world of fitness technology and a growing dependency that some coaches may fall into with too much of a focus on the actual device, rather than cuing their client for movement and behavior. Phil believes that with the right amount of mindfulness, fitness pros and coaches can use fitness tech as a tool for cueing, learning, and sensing instead of as a taskmaster that stresses them out. Understanding the six laws of winning in the fitness industry and in athletics, when we look at the segment of human superiority, Phil believes that fitness and coaching has always been and will continue to always be a truly shoulder to shoulder personal endeavor. While technology can support behaviors virtually along with concierge coaching, the most important part of your facility's approach for the client entering a relationship with a trainer to be a win is that there must be a focus on human superiority in contrast to technology. Phil believes that we all must "major in the majors" in order for health club members and personal training clients to achieve the real transformation their paying for. The law of individualization states that highly effective winners can't be mass-produced in a short training cycle, and in that same regard, no matter where our industry rides the wave of exponential tech in 2018, what's most important is that we always remember the basics of eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, and human connection. These must be uplifted by the tech we use, and in this world of distraction the fitness industry has an incredible responsibility on its shoulders: to give our millions of members worldwide a trusted space to practice those basics and never forget no matter how much technology grows to keep the human as the master rather than the servant. Power Quotes From Phil White "It's not enough to have quantitative analysis through a fitness device unless you are putting it into a behavioral and environmental context."  - Phil White on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "Technology's best use case in fitness is to identify a movement fault that is potentially harmful to a client, know what the correct solution is, and then have the client implement that solution. For best success, you use fitness technology only as a tool in your toolbox to help inform, educate, and increase self-awareness to get your client to a place where they are independent and no longer need that technology." - Phil White on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Phil White Become a Member of FIT-C Game Changer Book Athlete Unplugged Phil White on Facebook Phil White books Phil White on Twitter Unplugged Book Sport Illustrated Article: Does Investing in Sports Science Actually Result in More Wins? For more than 35 years, Phil Maffetone has brought the latest advances in fitness and nutrition to health-care professionals around the world. Dr. Maffetone has a bachelor’s degree in human biology and a doctorate in chiropractic, with certifications in physiotherapy, Chinese medicine, and kinesiology. Dr. Maffetone has worked with world-class athletes and celebrity personalities, as well as people from all walks of life. His extensive list of clients include professional football and baseball players, race-car drivers, Olympic medalists, and, of course, six-time Hawaii Ironman Champion Mark Allen. Phil Maffetone is an internationally-acclaimed author, having published more than 20 books including the first on heart-rate monitoring (early 1980s) and the first on the benefits of barefoot running (1990s). Dr. Maffetone’s textbook, Complementary Sports Medicine (Human Kinetics 1999), is published in English, Italian, Japanese, and Korean. Dr. Maffetone continues to write extensively and lecture worldwide on health and human performance. A clever way to convince people of their carbohydrate intolerance. In the early 1980s Dr. Maffetone had a lot of experience with low-carb, high-fat diets but came against the popular notion of the day that protein and fat was unhealthy. He found it increasingly difficult to convince people that his ideas were right, so he came up with the Two-week Test as an attempt to show people the difference. His thought was that since he couldn’t convince people intellectually, he’d have to show them how good they could feel in just two weeks by adopting his recommendations. For two weeks he’d have the client eliminate all junk food, remove all moderate and high glycemic index foods, and then keep track of their symptoms and weight. If dealing with specific health issues the client would keep track of those as well (blood pressure, for example). In just two weeks many of those clients would feel so much better the wouldn’t require any more convincing on the part of Dr. Maffetone. A different time with different issues. As the winds of change have continued to blow over the health and fitness culture we’ve seen things come to a point today where many top athletes, trainers, and coaches have come around to Dr. Phil’s way of thinking about dietary issues. Still, there are problems that come even on that side of the spectrum. One of the more recent is athletes on a high-fat diet who are under eating. Dr. Phil says, “Not being hungry is a wonderful thing… if you’re healthy.” He insists that these athletes need to focus on nutrient density if they’re eating so much less. This is a wide ranging conversation covering many aspects of Dr. Phil’s experience and career as a health practitioner and coach, as well as his insights on the training practices athletes can use to increase aerobic strength as well as performance. You’ll enjoy this one! Here’s the outline of this interview with Phil Maffetone: [0:03] Introduction of Phil Maffetone, doctor, author, and pioneer of heart rate monitoring. Hello, listeners.  What can I help you with?  Sorry, I'm not sure what you said.  You want to listen to the "Jobs" podcast? You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on that link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player located below:Ashton Kutcher portrays one of the most respected visionaries of the past...37 odd years.  He has the walk, the look of Steve Jobs but falls short of the mark in creating a fleshed out character.  Phil thinks he is the wrong choice for the role, Andrew thinks with the right director the performance would be successful.  What Phil and Andrew agree on is that "Jobs" needs an upgrade, badly.Kutcher as Jobs, introudicng the iPod for the first time.On a completely different note, Leonard Kastle's cult 1969 crime drama "The Honeymoon Killers" gets the Albatross Applesauce treatment in our Criterion Corner.  A film about an odd couple who go around murdering lonely women that is based on actual events!  This black and white and darkly humorous gem features a classic performance by Shirley Stoler as the severely troubled nurse who falls head over heels for Tony Lo Bianco's suave, Spanish lothario.  It's certainly a disturbing picture - but very artful and worthwhile viewing.
