An OG New York Distiller - But You May Know Them From Elsewhere Finger Lakes Distilling is one of the oldest distilleries in New York, having started in 2007. They're part of the Empire Rye collaborative, and are producing whiskies, brandies, vodka, and a soju spirit.  But you probably know them for a serendipitous partnership: Pursuit Spirits, from Kenny and Ryan at Bourbon Pursuit, who used Finger Lakes Distilling bourbon and rye in their single barrels and, later, their blends. Finger Lakes - also going by FLX - is a component in Barrell blends, too, but that's not for the parties to say (no NDA for me!).  I'm joined by Brian McKenzie, founder and the original distiller. When they started, there were no manuals, few people they could talk to to figure out how to distill, but they did it - and now, they pass that knowledge on to new distillers. There's no greater legacy than that.  Thank you to Brian for entering the Whiskey Ring! Something that is influenced and influences your emotions, your mental state, your satiety, your sleep patterns, and how well you get the most out of everyday activities. It's often overlooked, and oversimplified missing out on a few key features.   It's time to talk nerdy about breathing & how we can maximize how we breath to perform at our best.   Key thought leaders that have influenced my research & coaching include James Nestor, Patrick McKeown, Marc Magna, Brian McKenzie, Perry Nickelston and Shante Cofield. On this episode I interview with Phil White, co-author of several brilliant books including Unplugged with Andy Galpin & Brian McKenzie, Game Changer with Fergus Connolly, 17 hour fast with Dr Frank Merritt - challenging some of our assumptions. Background Phil was a guest on the show in Series 1 (episode 5) and we pick up where we left off last time; talking about technology and social media and the impact that it's having on our mental health. Having taken a 30 day sabbatical from all social media as an experiment whilst working alongside Kenny Kane, Phil has found it hard to pick up social media again and re-adjust to having that back as part of his life. During the 30 day period he found himself challenging some assumptions and questioning the value and purpose of posting stuff on social media at all. Discovery One of the things that Phil has been able to rediscover is the art of what he calls; long form conversation. Conversation whereby you are looking the other person in the eye, gauging response and observing body language as well. Ask yourself; what is it taking you away from? This is beautifully highlighted and illustrated by the 'Device free dinner' Campaign in which Will Ferrell is the star. What Phil keeps seeing and coming back to is 'long form'. Magazines that he writes for have shifted their focus from short articles or hacks to now wanting more journal type articles. He says; One of the reasons that podcasts like this are so popular and some of those in the US are massively popular like Tim Ferris and Joe Rogan is that people love them. They love them because they take the place of conversation. Final take-away Take a daily walk. 20-30 minutes ideally in nature. Today on the bench, we are seated between pro football player Brian Peters and Mindstrong project founder Harvey Martin. “Chasing the edge” is an easy concept. Athletes sustain performance via an aggregation of marginal gains. From 1-10, how developed is sauna therapy with pro athletes? Harvey rates it a 5, and Brian rates it a 3 or 4. It is slowly creeping its way into professional sports. It is knocking on the door. Saunas in NFL locker rooms are large, like 10’x10′. Harrison Smith would hit the cold plunge and then the sauna. Click here to read an article from 2011 detailing how Minnesota Vikings players used cold therapy, and how the saunatimes editorial department back then urged players to introduce themselves to authentic sauna to help make the process more impactful. Back to Brian Peters: while in Houston, a sports science staff member began to implement hot/cold therapy as a way to help athletes with sleep. Most guys hit the sauna as a relaxing thing. Hot/cold therapy is slowly creeping its way into professional sports. We know that sauna and heat transmission create neurotransmitters as a focus driver. Heat and cold treatment creates clarity. We are at our most primal state. Take away the science side and focus on the primal side. You are in your most primal state. Science vs. intuition. Breath is the one constant that follows all performance. The mental side is subjective. Built through awareness. Sauna creating a higher level of focus. The mental side is always subjective. It is self awareness. If we can acquire higher levels of focus in an overstimulated world. An ability to slower the respiratory rate. Gauging stress level: take 10 breathes in the cold tub. Less stress means longer hold times. Confidence is earned. Working in the heat and breathing in the cold expands the edges. Intuition is our highest form of intelligence. Reprogramming the autonomic nervous system. There is not a lot of comfort in the cold but there is a lot of of confidence. The physical elements to sauna and cold Brian immersed himself with contrast treatment for pro athletes: For recovery: finish in the cold. For performance: finish with the heat. Brian was Introduced to aerobic capacity through the work of Brian McKenzie, Gabby Reese, and Laird Hamilton. Underwater pool training and biking in the sauna. Brian was head and shoulders above other athletes due to his hot/cold training. he found himself calmer than other athletes. Pushing himself harder in stressful environments. Brian has always taken a ton of pride in the training aspect to pro football. You put in the work, and the results follow. You see the tangible results. About 80% physical. The mind and the body are connected through breath. The second that you start to over breathe is when you start chest breathing. The upper lung part of breathing doesn’t hold enough oxygen as deep gut breathing. Breath work helps performance. The first person to lose control of their breathing, their physiology tells their body that this is a survival state, and the mind creates a fight or flight state. Brian’s threshold of adaptation is created through heat/cold. “Stress forces adaptation” Heat shock proteins protect other proteins. The Mindstrong Project is a training center and protocol that helps study the pace of breathing. Measuring the CO2 levels of their clients as a flatline. Inhale/exhale measurements. How many breaths in a minute in the cold tub. Baseline respiratory rate. Heart rate variability. HRV – Heart Rate Variability. Velocity and acceleration measuring. In a sauna, your heart rate is fast. 150 beats per minute: work out rate. Running heart rate. Elite athletes resting heart rate is below 50. In the ice, your heart rate goes way down. Quickly shoots down. It’s like an interval work out. Aerobic capacity dictates the resting heart rate. Brian’s resting heart rate is 40-50. Prime respiratory system for activity and after activity, help recovery. The heart rate is lower than baseline after a cold plunge and relaxing between rounds. Sauna and cold plunge helps control heart rate, and this translates to normal life. You can think better, be more calm in stressful situations. A higher level of CO2 tolerance. Saturation of oxygen already in your system. Breathe is a tool. Brian breathes in 100% through the nose, and exhale 50% of the breath. Breathing should be another pillar of fitness. Nutrition, weight training, sleep, recovery.. and breath. “It is a pillar of physical health, and it needs to be explored and brought to the masses.” Sauna is “the truth barrel.” What is misunderstood about sauna? Sauna is misunderstood in that it is perceived to be a place to get rid of your demons, like maybe a hangover. But consistent use is where the benefits lie. It’s not a “some time” thing, but a lifestyle. People see sauna as a place at a locker room at a fitness club. A place to warm up or stretch. But it is so much deeper than this. We are in Nature and enjoying the fresh cool air. Nature is our greatest teacher. Training with Nature is much different than a fitness club. “We have done this with hundreds of people. The sauna environment is always equalized to everybody. If you train like this and live like this, you will never beat the heat and the cold. You will never beat Nature. You are in an environment that will allow you to get very intuitive with your thoughts.” “I have never been in an environment that has brought out more from me as a human than sauna and cold.” Be curious as a human. Chase the edges. This week's podcast is a conversation about principles and philosophies. When we started weMove 4 years ago Chris and I were fortunate enough to get to spend some time with Wim Hof at a time he was relatively unknown and the concept of breathing as a practice outside of yoga and pranayama was really in its infancy. This started us off on a journey to discover how our breath and the various techniques can support us in realising the potential we have as individuals to change for the better. That search and journey lead us to meet Brian McKenzie in the wilds of Oregon for issue 2 which you can download in digital format on our website and when we met Brian it was clear that there was more to breathing that wasn't always being explained. Brian is passionately interested about the transformative power of breathing and how it's at the centre of literally everything we do. THe word Inspire literally means 'to take breath in', so with everyone talking about being inspired they are often overlooking what that actually means, which is to breathe life into the action. And it's this philosophical side that's grounded actually in fundamental principles and that's what this podcast is about because Brian and his partner Rob Wilson have created the Art of Breath, a principles-based approach to breathwork, demystifying a lot of the more mystical elements of breathing and passing on the principles so everyone has the tools to really bring about a fundamental upgrade in themselves. And that's why we love Brian and Rob so much because they are straight talking, easy to understand and much deeper than simply the words they speak. And that's what this podcast is about , understanding and mastering the pricniples of breathing and being in order to apply them as you wish to enhance your life. Enjoy and as always let us know your thoughts in the comments below or email us.

This week we welcome to the show Brian MacKenzie. He is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the books Power Speed Endurance, and The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner. Questions we ask in this episode:  When it comes to training, I’ve heard you say quality vs quantity and methods are many, principles are few, please explain? What areas of exercise modalities would you encourage the weekend warrior who wants a rounded approach to their health, movement and longevity? You free dived with Great White Sharks. Why? Where does your passion for breathwork come from? You're currently collaborating with Stanford University's Neuroscience Dept. on how breath can influence our 'state', what have you discovered? I was intrigued by your book Unplugged, what can the reader expect from this? And this week, our fantastic guest is Brian Mackenzie, who is a human performance and movement specialist. Not only that, he's a top bloke and a lot of fun and just got a stack of wisdom and experience behind him, so it was great to have him on the show today. He's studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, methods along with heat and cold exposure as well. And we also dive into his more recent project, The Art of Breath, which of course I'm pretty passionate about as well. We even get into his book, Unplugged, and why he recently free-dived without a cage with great white sharks as well, which just blew my mind. So it's all in there. I don't care what you do. There's nuggets of wisdom for everyone in this podcast, and I have no doubt you're going to enjoy. And I also want to mention, don't forget guys, we are offering all the podcast listeners a 15% discount on any of our 180 Nutrition products at the moment. We literally just launched it this week, and the laws have been changing around hemp. We've been excited to bring this protein to the marketplace as well, cause it's an all plant-based protein, and personally, I'm in love with it at the moment. Anyway, you can check that out as well, and the discount code applies for that too. Anyway, let's go over to Brian McKenzie. Enjoy! [00:02:00] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook, as always. Good morning, Stu. Stu Hello mate! Guy And our awesome guest today is Brian Mackenzie. Brian, welcome to the show, dude. Brian Thanks for having me, boys. Pleasure. Guy It's been a long time coming. Your name has popped up on different views and podcasts over the last 12 months at least. So it's like oh, we gotta get Brian on the show. So yeah, very appreciative of your time, mate. Brian Yeah, absolutely. Guy So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Brian I don't know. Stu Don't speak to strangers. Brian [00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do.   http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/brian-mackenzie-interview/

In this interview, Andy talks about how he is using that in terms of recommendations for the general public, and in his elite athletes. Our favourite Andy Galpin quote from this episode: When you're optimising, you're not adapting Here’s the outline of this interview with Andy Galpin: [00:02:51] Molecular-level studies vs human clinic trials. With all the sleep apps, heart rate monitors, supplements, air conditioners, coffee (and more coffee) we use, it's evident we live in an optimized world, and it is making us weak. In episode 259, we are bringing Brian Mckenzie and Andy Galpin back to talk about the research they are doing around performance, and what it means to be a resilient human in a comfortable world.  Never before have we had it so easy, and although we are training and optimizing our diet, our comfy lifestyle is holding us back from being as strong as we could be. It is one thing to have a training routine, but as soon as we go back to our air conditioned rooms and perfectly organized lifestyle, we lose the ability to adapt to the stress that our body has evolved to feel. Brian and Andy have co authored a book called Unplugged, and in it they have put in the work and laid out the practices we can adopt (and the one’s we need to abandon) if we want to create a resilient body and mind.  Every athlete should listen to this episode. If you want to learn how to build mental toughness, and a stress adapted body, you can head over to amazon and pre-order the book. Enjoy the show, Mike

We have a hard working and knowledgable personal trainer with us today.  His name is Guy Petruzzelli.  We will be talking about How to get back into the game to become the your healthiest. As a 43 year old professional  duathlete, who, at the age of 20, found a real passion for multi-sport, was forced to take some time away. I was hit by a car in 1996, leaving me rather injured and finding a comeback difficult. So I finished law school, passed the Illinois Bar exam and thought my time in the sport was over. In 2002, I was fortunate to have some close friends, who were concerned about my physical state, encourage me to get back into the sport. It wasn’t easy, but I came back to it with more desire, drive and passion. I worked hard under the coaching supervision of the great Jennifer Garrison, and in 2008 I was offered an opportunity to turn professional. It was a dream come true. I left law in 2009 to pursue my dream of being a professional multisport athlete and I have been blessed with the opportunity to do more with the sport, and meet a ton of great people along the way. As the 2010 season started to heat up in June, I was out for a training ride and once again, hit by a car. This time, I was left with a broken right collarbone and 3 broken ribs. My doctor insisted that even with surgery, I would miss the remainder of the season and would most likely not even be able to train hard until the start of 2011. I refused to believe that I would be limited for that long. So right after surgery I went to see Nate Aye and John Conquest at Crossfit DuPage. I was very honest about my goals as an athlete and the desire to be in the top tier of pro multisport athletes in 2011. They were very honest in turn, and made it clear – my goals were attainable, but it would take hard work and an open mind. From that day forward, I never looked back. A short 6 weeks later I met someone I knew would be a friend for life. Someone who was as driven as I was, constantly  challenging the norm, and believed that working smart was the key to success in multisport. Brian McKenzie from Crossfit Endurance opened my eyes to even more change to my training methods, breaking down old school endurance training ideology, improving my running form, and changing my mentality as how I approach training and racing. I was skeptical for the first hour I heard him talk, and then I watched as in less than 48 hours, I had improved my running efficiency by 53%. I was a believer. With Brian’s help, I was able to achieve 2 things in less than 5 weeks – continue to speed up my healing process, and improve fitness. When I went to see my doctor at week 9 post-surgery, the x-rays showed 90% bone growth, and I was cleared to race duathlons. But the most amazing part – my 5K time dropped, my LT wattage on the bike increased by 33% and I was 8 lbs. lighter than pre-accident. This wasn’t by accident; this was due to following Crossfit Strength and Crossfit Endurance principles. Best part, I’m still improving.  To spread the word of my recovery and passion, I was the focus of a Triathlete Magazine article in the February 2011 edition, written by TJ Murphy. I was then added to the book written by Brian MacKenzie in November 2012 – “Power, Speed, Endurance, a skill based approach to endurance training”, and featured in Chris Solomon’s article in the January 2013 issue of Outside Magazine, where Chris chronicles his use of Crossfit Endurance to train for a marathon.  To prove that I practice what I preach, I’ve been working with Cody Burhardt, head coach at Power Speed Endurance, to help me reach my current world rank of 11th in Duathlon. I’ve also appeared on the podcast www.athleteologist.com – episode 8,where I was able to share my story. facebook.com/guypetruzzelli twitter,com/guypetruzzelli instagram.com/guypetruzzelli www.guypetruzzelli.blogspot.com For additional podcast from Healthy Living With Eric Su visit www.ericwsu.com/podcasts.   Remember, Eric Su’s FREE Results Coaching Strategy session: www.ericwsu.com/freecoachingcall Watch Eric Su on Facebook Live.  Visit www.facebook.com/ericwsutrainer every Friday at 9:30am CST. We were so excited about the Census' first-ever report exclusively focused on biking and walking that we devoted this entire episode of the Talking Headways podcast to an interview with its author, Brian McKenzie.  Bike commuting is up 60 percent since 2000, the Census data shows, and people with low incomes are by far the biggest proportion of the riding public.  People who bike and walk are hungry for reliable data. While government-sanctioned statistics on vehicle-miles-traveled are easy enough to come by, where would you go for foot-miles-walked or bicycle-miles-ridden? Strava? No. The Census. Not that the Census data doesn't have its limitations, and Brian talks candidly about those. But the data gives us a glimpse of who's walking and biking for transportation, and where, and why they stop. Dive deep with us. Here is a full half-hour just for you bike-ped dataheads. Enjoy. And talk at us in the comments.  PS: Talking Headways is available on iTunes or Stitcher or by signing up for our RSS feed.  PPS: Many thanks to those of you who have already donated -- especially those who specifically mentioned that you enjoy the podcast. Keep it coming!

Subscribe via iTunes The guest for this episode is Kevin Koskella from Triswimcoach.com, TriSwimPro.com, and the Tri Swim Coach podcast. Kevin offers advice to swimmers of all levels during this interview. He offers 5 tips specifically for intermediate to advanced swimmers. 1. Take time to do sprints once per week For example: 8X50, the first 25 yards are all out sprint, next 25 are easy to moderate, 15-20 seconds rest. 2. Use equipment Fins - Kevins preference is the Finis Z2 Gold Zoomers.  They help with kick and ankle flexibility. Use as a tool while doing drills and some sprint sets. Paddles - Kevin likes the Finis Freestyler paddles because they teach how to pull the right way. He believes some paddles can exacerbate problems in the pull and cause shoulder issues. 3. Strength training He likes to include deckups (pull yourself out of the pool) and pushups with swimming.  It results in less yardage, but adds in strength training.  Some of these ideals are similar to Brian McKenzie of CrossFIt. He also recommends the use of elastic tubing. 4. Decrease your interval Over a given distance give yourself less rest and decrease your interval.  In a Masters swim group this might mean moving up a lane. 5. Play free golf Example workout: 6X50 with 20 to 30 seconds rest. Count your strokes and your time on each 50. Your score is the combination of your time and your strokes for each 50.  For each subsequent 50 you want to lower your score. This requires getting more efficient or doing a higher effort while maintaining good form. Subscribe via iTunes
