This week on Your Financial Choices, Laurie Siebert is back to answer audience questions and discuss the evening's topic: "A First Quarter Market Update" with guest William Henderson, VP/Head of Investments at Valley National Financial Advisors in Bethlehem.
“You're marrying a firefighter. That's all I'll ever be. I'm never going to finish college.” That's what Bill Henderson told his soon to be wife many years ago, but thankfully that was not true. Fast forward to today and Bill is now Professor William Henderson, the Stephen F. Burns Chair on the Legal Profession at Indiana University and he has been a law professor for nearly 20 years. Professor Henderson is also the moving force behind Legal Evolution, an online publication focusing on changes in the legal industry with the stated mission of providing lawyers, legal educators, and allied professionals with high-quality information to solve very difficult industry-specific problems. It was almost true that Professor Henderson did not finish college. He dropped out and got a job as a firefighter. But… it was only because he was a firefighter that he ended up going to law school. In the early 90s, during firefighter union negotiations, Bill's union rep asked him to tag along and take notes. Foreshadowing his career as a professor, not only did Bill take notes, he also did in depth research into prior collective bargaining agreements and into state law so the union team could strike a better bargain. In the end, Bill moved on from note taker to union vice president and eventually took over as lead negotiator. Because of all of this, Bill decided to go to law school at the University of Chicago and became a legal professor. Since entering academia, Bill has done a ton of research and writing on the state of legal services in general, but more specifically, how legal innovation can improve it. In a nutshell, Bill's research has determined that more and more legal work is focused on commercial law at the expense of “PeopleLaw” –a term he uses to describe legal work done on behalf of individuals (like criminal law, domestic relations law and the like). 50 years ago, legal work was pretty much split 50/50 between PeopleLaw and commercial law. Now that division is 75/25 in favor of commercial law which is causing an access to justice issue. There is a great need for legal services related to PeopleLaw, but it is too expensive or just doesn't exist. However, Professor Henderson thinks there are a few things the legal community can do to address this problem: Better use of project management techniques, use of allied professionals, and leveraging legal technology.
Episode 88: William Henderson. This week Joannagh tells us of an unsolved case from the 1800's known as the Mount Stewart Murder. This case involves the murder of 55-year-old Janet Rogers, who was found dead in the home of her younger brother William Henderson in March 1866. The case was a mystery from the start with no obvious motive being found and the crime scene having some peculiarities.Joannagh tells us how suspicion soon fell on James Crichton, a ploughman who worked with William Henderson, who was quickly charged with the crime. We hear how conflicting witness accounts shaky evidence would result in a demonstration of a unique aspect of Scots Law - the 'Not Proven' verdict.Case research by Joannagh ShanksProduced by Emma Taylor & Joannagh ShanksEditing by Shaun O'NeillMusic by Tribe of NoiseSources of research:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-18721312https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/murder-in-1866-mirrors-jenny-methven-1278472https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/past-times/2081281/murder-most-foul-1866-perthshire-murder-axe-slaying-remains-unsolved/https://www.facebook.com/The-Mount-Stewart-Murder-241521572627316/about/?ref=page_internalhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0exKqONY8kChris Paton's book: https://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/the-mount-stewart-murder/9780752460208/?fbclid=IwAR0MIHTRguk1Vizzb8cEtzhoQXzfYLMriD4Iq-2su-NJeNQwh4c4X6VU1FY&fbclid=IwAR0MIHTRguk1Vizzb8cEtzhoQXzfYLMriD4Iq-2su-NJeNQwh4c4X6VU1FY

Early on Friday March 30th, 1866, William Henderson prepared to set off on the 5-mile journey to Perth in Scotland for the weekly cattle market. He had a lot on his mind: There was a significant outbreak of cholera affecting cattle in the nearby regions in Scotland, and people and animals were getting sick. He had livestock ready to give birth on his farm and needed to make sure the birthing went well. He had been having issues with a local worker on his farm – suspecting him of not being all which he appeared. In addition to that, his elder sister Janet had been on his back for the general state of the farmhouse. With all of these problems racing round his head, the last thing which William Henderson thought he would have to deal with that day would be murder.Primary Audio by JSScript, Editing, Production, Soundtracking, and Post by Matt KSoundtracks provided by EpidemicSound all rights reserved

After the death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, many were wondering how his large fortune would be divided up.The Duke, who passed away at 99, had amassed quite a large fortune throughout his lifetime, much like his wife and monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.Prince Philip left an estimated $58.5 million when he died last month, and it was reported on Friday that "three key men in his life" were left money from his will, according to a royal insider. While the majority of his estate is likely to have been left to the Queen, a source close to Buckingham Palace claimed the Duke also recognised his closest aides."Unlike some other royals, Prince Philip will be generous to the three men who looked after him," the insider told Fabulous."These include his private secretary Brigadier Archie Miller Bakewell, his page William Henderson and valet Stephen Niedojadlo."All three men were hugely supportive of the Duke in his final years with Mr Bakewell frequently standing in for Philip when he couldn't make an engagement. Before the Iron Duke became the Queen's husband, Philip was born into royalty as the Prince of Greece and Denmark. His parents, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, were in line for the Greek throne, before they were exiled when Philip was 18 months old.His parents, Philip, and his four eldest sisters Princesses Cecilie, Margarita, Sophie and Theodora fled to France. It was in France where Philip was educated (in Paris, and later in Germany and the United Kingdom too), before he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939 when he was 18-years-old.Prince Charles leads the royals at Philip's funeral. (Photo / AP)Come March 1939 and Philip was a British citizen, adopting the last name Mountbatten which came from his mother's family. He had abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles. This was the significant year that Philip began exchanging letters with Queen Elizabeth II, whom he later married in 1947.By the eve of their wedding, Lieutenant Mountbatten was formally named Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron of Greenwich, also given the title of His Royal Highness. While he inherited these royal titles, Prince Philip gained a large amount of money and assets.Prince Philip left an estimated $58.5 million when he died last month. (Photo / Getty Images)Prince Philip was given a salary, a royal allowance from the Sovereign Grant which was an official expense account which was paid for by British taxpayers. This was around $686,000 per year.Prince Philip retired from his official royal duties in 2017, but it is unclear whether or not he continued to receive this allowance. The Duke maintained access funds which were earned by a private portfolio of properties and land, as well as assets set up by the Duchy of Lancaster in 1399.Prince Philip and The Queen are said to share a portfolio that includes stocks and land which was inherited by the Queen's family, including their Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham Estate in England. The insider claimed that Philip's grandchildren, including Prince Harry who has launched a number of scathing attacks on the royal family in recent months, will have been "sorted out quite a while ago" when it came to money. They said: "Philip was not the sort of character to punish a grandson [Harry] for misbehaving. He was a very fair, even-handed and lovely man. Never held a grudge."They added: "Philip had plenty of time to sort out all the legal stuff so it wouldn't attract inheritance tax. He was no more of a fan of leaving his cash to the Treasury than anyone else."The source added that the Duke's children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew – have been told they can "take what they want" from his collection of 13,000 books in his library at Buckingham Palace.

Last time we talked about the ghostly apparition that is known generally as The Black Dog. It appears throughout the United Kingdom and is often seen as an omen, a foreteller of death, a spectral remnant of some tragic event, a haunter of boundaries and churchyards and sometimes a friendly guardian. Today, however, as we inch closer to Samhain and the barriers between worlds get ever more fragile, we are going to come face to face with some more malevolent mutts. Specific black dogs and the places they have wrought fear upon, black dogs as symbols of devils and witchery, and a look back at some potential origins for this canine creep in the roots of British mythology. Placekicker Chris Jacke shares what he's been up to since he left the Green Bay Packers and the NFL on this episode of Brandstorm. Jacke talks about his company, Packers Alumni Resources, his new team of players and how to sign up a Packers legend for your next event. Chris Jacke Chris Jacke is a former football placekicker best known for playing for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League. Jacke was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft. He went on to play eight seasons with the Packers from 1989 to 1996. In his last year with the Packers, he assisted the Packers to a 13-3 record and a win in Super Bowl XXXI, defeating the New England Patriots. When he left the NFL, Jacke took a few years off to be with his family. He became a licensed financial planner, and in 2013, was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame, the same year he founded his company, Packer Alumni Resources. Packer Alumni Resources Jacke’s induction into the Packers Hall of Fame inspired numerous offers for him to speak at corporate events, play in golf outings, and assist in fund-raisers. His wife, Terry, who is also a business consultant, felt Jacke would have a lot more fun doing these types of engagements than financial planning and he agreed. While Jacke intended to promote himself in the beginning, after talking to other football players who were making appearances, like Gilbert Brown, Frank Winters and William Henderson, he realized most of them did not have an Internet presence or website. With their permission, Jacke put their photos on his website and offered to help set up any events that came in. Today, Packer Alumni Resources has any impressive roster of former Packers players in addition to the previous players mentioned, including Jerry Kramer, Lynn Dickey, George Koonce, Ahman Green and Kabeer Gbala-Biamila (KGB). Currently, Jacke only works with former Packers players, but is considering expanding and working with other football franchises. Greatest Packers Memories Jacke’s greatest memories of his time in the NFL are his first field goal, the year the Packers were called the “Cardiac Pack” in 1989, and the Monday Night Football game when the Packers went into overtime against the San Francisco 49ers and Jacke kicked a long field goal to win the game. Jacke was also with the Packers during their transformation from the Lindy Infante era to the Mike Holmgren era. In 1989, after a terrific 10-6 season, Jacke was sure the team would be contenders the following year with players like Don Majkowski, Sterling Sharpe and Brian Noble returning to play. The Packers would go on to 4-12 season the next two years. Through it all, Jacke loved the game, had fun and was proud to be a part of it all. Promotional Opportunities Jacke’s team is available for almost any type of event, including church fund-raisers, corporate meetings, employee training, golf outings, and hunting and fishing expeditions. Jacke and his wife do their best to match the stories of former football players with the needs of the organizations inquiring. George Koonce, for instance, likes to talk about perseverance, growing up in tiny shack on a dirt road and rising to become a Super Bowl Champion and later earning his PhD. Jacke often talks about transformation, citing the moves of Bob Harlan bringing in Ron Wolfe, and the domino effect of having a new coaching staff and players. The team was so different, Jacke says when the Packers won the Super Bowl in 1997, he and LeRoy Butler were the only players remaining from the Infante team. The Packers changed everything behind-the-scenes, too…the training rooms and weight rooms and recruiting Reggie White, who would become an ambassador for bringing in other players who wanted to play for the Packers. Jacke ties this story in with leadership and corporate America. You have to put the right people in place to successfully lead. Marketing His Company Jacke uses social media and the personal contacts he and his wife know to market his company. In the early days, he would invite Packers sponsors and others for coffee to get their feedback about what he wanted to do with his company. It has helped shaped the company he has now, five years later. Benefits of Celebrity Appearances Jacke and his team get a lot of great feedback from their speeches. When companies conduct day-long meetings, it is helpful to break up the day with an appearance by a former Green Bay Packer who can share a story that is relevant to the goals the company is trying to achieve. Jacke also likes to help causes raise money by posting on his social media sites and helping to raise funds for charities at golf outings. Costs vary for celebrity appearances, depending on the player and the budget of the company. Contacting Chris Jacke The best way to reach Jacke is through his website, which also has his email and phone number. He is also available through social media. Jacke says he makes a point to respond to inquiries within 24 to 48 hours, depending on if it’s a weekend or a sunny day in Wisconsin.
