Episoded 313: Sierra Hull brings a measure of small-town delight and innocence to roots and bluegrass that perfectly compliments her innate gifts and her formal schooling in high level music-making. The mandolinist, songwriter, singer, and band leader has emerged, since her youthful debut in 2008, as a star of her field and an inspiring figure in Americana. Her four IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year awards are part of the story. But so is her composing, her collaborating and her records. The first in five years - and her first independent release - is A Tip Toe High Wire, coming March 7. This episode complements a bio-oriented show in 2018, emphasizing Hull's recent work with Béla Fleck, Cory Wong and others, and of course the thought behind and production of her newest release. See Craig's show notes at WMOT.org.
Episode 307: It was 50 years ago this month that a 23-year-old Mickey Raphael felt his way through his first recording session with his relatively new band boss Willie Nelson. And it was no small thing, producing the iconic Red Headed Stranger. It was one event in a charmed life that set this Dallas musician on a path to the ultimate steady gig for more than 50 years, plus stature as the world's top on-call harmonica player. Raphael has played and recorded with Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Don Williams, Emmylou Harris, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Norah Jones, Wynton Marsalis, and even U2 and Motley Crue. In a session taped at WMOT's East Nashville satellite studio, we talk about it all.
Episode 306: This one's personal. Eight years ago, when we launched the Roots Radio format on the historic signal WMOT 89.5 FM, a few of us knew we could have no better program director than Jessie Scott, and we were fortunate that she was in the right time and place to come on board. Her 50 years of on-air experience, her expertise in Americana music, and her warm and knowledgeable voice have become the core of WMOT's sound. She governs the deep and excellent WMOT playlist and its mix of new and legacy music, plus she's a fountain of enthusiasm on the air every weekday afternoon from 4 to 7 pm. So after all this time and hearing some of her career stories, it was time to invite her on The String for a special year-end episode.
After a long hiatus hosts Will Payne Harrison and India Ramey are back with new episodes and a new logo. This episode Will Payne is interviewing India about her new album Baptized by the Blaze out on August 23rd. India Ramey blazes a trail through cinematic spaghetti western landscapes to wood floored Honkytonks and the Appalachian foothills. India's musical journey was not typical. “Having grown up poor, there was a lot of pressure for me to ‘go to college and make money' so I convinced myself that music was a hobby”. Ramey, a domestic violence survivor graduated college, got a law degree and became a domestic violence prosecutor. “I thought if I was helping people like my Mom, I would like being a lawyer more”. Despite her love of helping people, Ramey's love for music won in the end. She gave up her law career to become a full time musician and songwriter and has never looked back. Featured as one of the “Must See Acts at SXSW, a Nashville's Lighting 100 artist of the week, a two-time Americanafest showcasing artist, and one of NPR's “10 Nashville Artists on the Rise”, India has only continued to rise among the ranks of as one of Country and Americana's brightest up and coming, emerging artists. Her most recent album, Shallow Graves debuted at number six on the Euro Americana Charts and landed a song as Rolling Stone's pick of the week. Billboard says of her performance in her 2020 Nashville residency performance, “The rollicking set recalls everyone from Tammy Wynette to Wanda Jackson.” Nashville's Americana radio station, WMOT says India is the perfect mixture of Loretta Lynn and Neko Case, Rolling Stone describes her as “Part Black Sabbath, part honky-tonk” and the BBC's Ralph McClean says “India is a singer of the truth, she knows the value of a well-told tale sung with passion and honesty. She is a bright light in the darkness. Long may she shine." Please rate and review the podcast and share with your friends. This week on WOA we have the unique pleasure of bringing together Hippie Radio 94.5 Whit Hubner and Hannah Rose, who is a part of Waves Fairview Day Program. Hannah has a personal goal of being on the radio one day and what better way to facilitate that goal than to connect her with a radio expert? Whit and Hannah are welcomed by your host Trent Denson and co-host Matt Moore to explore what it looks like to get involved with the radio and the various joys that come with it. Whit shares his journey to radio, having started in sales before his boss suggest joining Hippie Radio. He spent 4 years with Hippe Radio before joining WMOT for 6 years. Just this past February Whit returned to Hippie Radio and currently produces the Sunday Night Vinyl Series with Bill Edwards at 9 pm. Hannah doesn't miss the opportunity to ask Whit what he loves most about radio and eagerly listens to Whit's advice on how to pursue the career. We wouldn't be WOA without hearing from Matt "the Man" Moore on his passion for music. Listen along as the team talks radio, The Simpsons, and what we can look forward to next from Whit. Steve Boyle and Webb Wilder join us to present a project that has been in the works for decades and will emerge this year, we hope, on a radio near you! In the 1980s, Steve and Webb began working on a neo-noir detective series, riffing on the anti-commercial commercials that they produced for Hard Rock Cafe back in the day. It came from Nashville, first in the form of a proposed TV series, then a script, then a book, then an audiobook, and now a full-fledged radio show. Rae Cole and Oscar Bugarin, of critically acclaimed Calling Cadence join the show. The band's self titled debut album (Out NOW) showcased a group's innate ability to nod to the past while resolutely pushing forward. It's a classic-sounding record (recorded, mixed, and mastered straight to analog tape) for the contemporary world. Computers were only employed for streaming prep and CD replication. Produced by David Swartz and Matt Linesch, the album was released on the pairs hi-res records label. “Good Day,” along with the four other songs on the acoustic EP were recorded live in the studio to capture the initial magic of the album. The second single from the album, 'Good Day' continues to be a stand-out favorite, with support from NPR, Nashville's WMOT, Los Angeles radio stations KCSN, KLOS, and recently found a new champion in CMT who put the “Good Day” official music video into rotation and currently have it featured on the CMT 12 pack Countdown Program. Join us as we chat with Rae and Oscar about recording in Analog Sound, Chemistry in a band, Ghosting, Motown, Sam Cooke and timeless influences among lots more. And stay tuned for an exclusive performance of 'Just The Way It Goes'. For more on Calling Cadence, visit: www.callingcadencetheband.com
Episode 193: From where we sit at WMOT, Allison Russell was the artist of 2021. Her album Outside Child, our most played disc, emerged in the summer to massive acclaim and it has now been nominated for three Grammy Awards. And she was tapped to curate the Sunday closing set at Newport Folk Festival, which she used to shine a light on a dozen extraordinary African American women who've found their footing in roots music and lit up the genre with deeply individual work. That said, she's been in folk music for 20 years. So to close out 2021, Allison joined me to talk about it all. Also, Cajun music star and caretaker Joel Savoy speaks about his father Marc Savoy's new book tracing his career and contributions to the Acadian accordion.

Super cool interview with Your Witness! Did you know there is an international air guitar league? True story
As I browsed World of Bluegrass in Raleigh last September, I caught up with four artists who make for a pretty good cross section of the genre circa 2019: Tim Stafford of Blue Highway, an iconic band celebrating its 25th anniversary, Irene Kelley, a veteran songwriter who's on top of the charts as an artist, Appalachian Road Show, a new super-group with a cultural mission and The Dead South, a young band of Canadian folk rockers who represent the adventuresome edge of bluegrass music. Notes and full versions of these edited interviews can be found at WMOT.org.

Charley Crockett has a story that's difficult to imagine playing out in the 21st century - he's hoboed around the country, lost loved ones, scuffled with the law, played on the streets for a decade. And recently he endured open-heart surgery. At 35, he's lived several of our lifetimes. And the thing is, he's poured it all into his remarkable country blues, and he's finally getting the renown he deserves. It's what roots music is all about. Get ready for his 9.20 release of The Valley with this conversation, which took place hours before his Grand Ole Opry debut in the WSM Room back stage. Also in the hour, Nashville's Lillie Mae is back on the program to discuss making her second album for Third Man Records at Studio A with the super-producer Dave Cobb. It's part of a longer conversation that will get posted soon at WMOT.org.

We recently enjoyed a not-so-strange chat with the engaging Mandy Barnett about her new album Strange Conversation. The setting was WMOT’s 895 Fest on the fields of the Hop Spring Beer Park, a distinctly different venue than her upcoming “Nashville Songbook” concert at Feinstein’s/54 Below on Broadway on August 13. But that’s no surprise. Mandy Barnett’s career has always been… Read more The post Show #38 Mandy Barnett and her “Strange Conversation” appeared first on Americana One.

Will Kimbrough, 30-year veteran of Nashville TN is up to so many musical projects, it took a whole segment to cover them all. He's in three bands and an acoustic duo. He writes with and for Jimmy Buffett. He's been on the road over recent years with Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris, two of his heroes. He produces great records. And, lest we forget, he's a dynamic performing songwriter and guitarist, steaming ahead with a busy year of touring and a new album, the grooving and highly thought provoking I Like It Down Here. Also in the hour, an excerpt from a recent catch up with the mighty Steve Earle, who's just released his long awaited tribute to his late great friend Guy Clark. Full conversation is at WMOT.org.

AmericanaFest 2016 may be wrapping up, but more than ever, we took this year’s gathering as a battery-charger and an inspiring star map for what lies ahead. Hearing kind words about our new Roots Radio initiative on WMOT 89.5 FM certainly helped rev our enthusiasm from high to higher for the prospects of sharing and spreading the music and the stories of its makers. I had an interesting but sobering experience on the weekend teaching a seminar about the origins and legacy of Music City to a group of 50 adult learners enrolled at Bethel University. These were folks from outside our industry/music nerd circles, but I was surprised to survey them and learn that ZERO of them had heard of the concept of “Americana” music. Yet this is music for everyone. It’s our shared, connecting heritage in a divisive time, so I took this as a personal challenge. Due to the unique time crunch of AMA week, I offer my annual condensed survey of last week’s action and this week’s show, which looks just splendid with an MCR debut by Austin “Ameri-Chicana” fiddler/singer Carrie Rodriquez and a celebrated blues guitar slinger. But as I sit quietly thinking about these recent days, I’m swimming in the echoes of some absurdly excellent performances: William Bell singing “The Three of Me” at the Honors & Awards show with staggering grace and candor, Aaron Lee Tasjan’s psychedelic country glam and River Whyless (MCR alums) playing sparkling, surprise-filled alt-folk. And of course we threw a showcase on Thursday and couldn’t have been happier with our roster.
