[originally published on Patreon January 25, 2024] Today I'm rejoined by Dr. Pig Bodine aka CJ (@pussy___teeth) to continue our discussion on the 1972 film State of Siege by Costa-Gavras. We open with a discussion on the death squad as a general concept and in its specific applications in Uruguay. Then, we discuss exactly why the Tupamaros were so effective and, despite that, why they were brought down so quickly. As it turns out, they were brought down due to the same factors that made them so effective: espionage and infiltration. We discuss both Cuban, Uruguayan, and CIA intelligence. I introduce Manuel Hevia Cosculluela, the double (or triple) agent embedded within this story. Then I tell the story of the Mormon Tupamaro within the story of the incredible jailbreak from the Punta Carreras prison of 1971. After, we discuss the infiltration against the Tupamaros by fascist drug and weapons smugglers. We talk about the JCR, the Junta Coordinadora Revolutionaria, and place the Tupamaros within the continental revolutionary context. Finally, we cover the downright cocaine cowboy shenanigans of Mitrione's son. I got to sit down with NASCAR driver Jeremy Clements. Jeremy was one of the youngest drivers to ever qualify for a NASCAR Nationwide Series event at age 18, racing for Jerry Young at Pikes Peak on July 26, 2003. He finished the race in 31rst after an accident on lap 28 ended his day. Jeremy would return to the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2007, running 5 races with McGill Motorsports, driving the No. 36 Chevrolet. In 2008, Jeremy ran two races for this family team, driving the No. 50 at Gateway and Homestead. During 2009, he ran the first half of the season driving the No. 50 for his family team and the second half of the season for Johnny Davis in the No. 0. His best finish came at Auto Club Speedway on October 10, 2009, where he qualified 21rst and finished in 12th position. Jeremy Clements Racing/ Clements Racing Engines was formed in 2010 giving Jeremy the opportunity to run a partial schedule funded by Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Running under Johnny Davis on a very limited budget, the team qualified for 16 races, with Jeremy's then best NNS career finish of 10th at Gateway International Raceway. In 2011, the decision was made to move Jeremy full time into the NNS and run a full season driving the No. 51 for Jeremy Clements Racing. Although primary sponsorship was not secured, Jeremy and JCR remained competitive in the field, completing the season with 4 top 15 finishes and 7 top 20 As in 2011, the Team would again overcome limited sponsorship support and remain competitive on the track during the 2012 season. In his second full time season in NXS, Jeremy would earn 2 top 10 finishes at the Brickyard's Inaugural race (Indy) and at the Monster Mile (Dover). Jeremy completed the 2014 season in 14th place in the Driver Point Standings. In August 2017 in his 256th start Jeremy recorded his first career NXS win at Road America topping all the Cup-Affiliated teams as well as securing his first NXS playoff appearance. This was quite an accomplishment for a family owned single car team that builds its own engines and runs with limited sponsorship. Jeremy currently resides in his hometown of Spartanburg, SC, with his wife Cortney and their dog Mollie. During the off season, Jeremy enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. Jeremy finished the season the 2018 15th in Driver Point Standings. HOST The Motivational Cowboy - Johnny D. It seems we will not have EU Fire Code for at least a few more decades... Why is that? Because the people in power found out that it is not the most efficient thing to do it right now. And they found it through the power of research carried out by the European Commissions Joint Research Centre. I have invited Dr Adamantia Athanasopoulou from JCR to talk about their most recent report on the state of fire engineering (or performance-based fire engineering) in Europe, and it turned out to be a discussion also on how the law is created and spread in the EU and what can we do with the knowledge we've found. If you would like to learn more about the findings of the JCR, they the report is available at their website: https://eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/publications/status-and-needs-implementation-fire-safety-engineering-approach-europe(or you can just use this direct link) http://eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2023-01/JRC131689_01.pdf

The Third Millennium Alliance has accepted the challenge of Protecting & Restoring The Most Endangered Rainforest On Earth. Ryan Lynch is the executive director of the Third Millennium Alliance (TMA). Ryan is joining on the podcast to discuss this challenge.TMA began when conservationists Isabel, Jerry, and Bryan met in South America during the first years of the new millennium. They were three idealists in their late 20s facing the prospects of a biosphere headed toward collapse. Together they set out to directly engage the greatest challenge of our times: steering humanity onto a path of sustainability and ecological resilience. In 2007, they founded TMA and took the first step toward creating what is now the Jama-Coaque Reserve (JCR). They raised $16,000 from friends and family, established a nonprofit organization, and purchased 100 acres of unprotected rainforest at the very peak of Ecuador's coastal mountain range—in the heart of the Pacific Forest. In the beginning, they camped in the forest, lived off of bananas and soggy bread, and slept in leaky tents while exploring the beauty and biodiversity of this special place. During the years that followed, they learned by doing. They practiced permaculture, experimented with reforestation, and built a collaborative relationship with their neighbors and people throughout the region. Meanwhile, TMA continued to grow as an organization. Hundreds of people from dozens of countries came to JCR to work in the rainforest and join the effort.Fourteen years later, JCR protects 1,500 acres of rainforest. It is equipped with a scientific research center that attracts biologists from around the world. It also includes a regenerative agroforestry demonstration site that features the country's largest repository of the most endangered heirloom cacao variety on earth.TMA is now working on a Community Reforestation Program with the potential to reverse deforestation and steer the regional economy onto a more sustainable course. It's a model that can be replicated in other endangered ecosystems throughout the world. All of the above is in service of TMA's ultimate goal: create a large-scale conservation corridor in northwest Manabí that connects the last surviving remnants of the Pacific Forest of Ecuador. There is no greater challenge to humanity than protecting and restoring the most endangered rainforest on earth.

In this bonus series on Leadership and Learning, we are sharing episodes from other podcast series we recommend. They feature inspirational people that our host, Sue Stockdale has interviewed. This guest episode is from the Clusters podcast. Host Sue Stockdale talks to Simon Bazalgette, Chair of Trustees at the worldXchange Foundation, about how the legacy of the Grubb Institute, which focused on organisational dynamics, systems thinking and psychology, played a role in the creation of Clusters.Clusters is a programme bringing together representatives from across sectors such as Housing, Environmental, Health and Digital to explore new ways of seeing, being and doing.Simon talks about how self-awareness, systemic thinking, and empowering others are at the heart of effective leadership. He describes a powerful early learning experience he had as a volunteer running a youth club in a deprived area, where by using this leadership approach they created a safe space for the youths to run their own organisation. In 2020, Simon co-founded Global Venue Services, and he is the Chairman. Between 2008 and 2019 he was Chairman of Jockey Club Racecourses, (JCR) the largest UK racecourse operator, and Group Chief Executive of its owner, The Jockey Club. JCR owns and operates 15 racecourses and puts on three of the top 10 best attended sports events in the UK (Cheltenham, the Grand National and the Derby). Prior to taking over the running of the 270-year-old Jockey Club, Simon had spent 15 years co-founding and running media and technology start-ups.The worldXchange foundation exists to advance the education and the capability of communities to shape positive sustainable change through collaborative, action led programmes across the world.Listen to other episodes of the Clusters podcast at https://www.spreaker.com/show/clusters Find out more about Clusters at https://www.clusters.worldRead the transcription for this episode on www.accesstoinspiration.org and connect with us:Twitter www.twitter.com/accessinspirat1 Facebook www.facebook.com/accesstoinspiration Instagram www.instagram.com/accesstoinspiration LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/company/access-to-inspiration/ Sign up for our newsletter http://eepurl.com/hguX2b Sound Editor: Matias de Ezcurra (he/him)Producer: Sue Stockdale (she/her)

For almost 50 years, the global research community has relied on the data in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR)™ to identify the world's leading journals. The JCR is based on data from the Web of Science™, the world's largest publisher-neutral global citation database, and its journal intelligence metrics play a key role for funders, institutions, librarians and researchers. Academic publishers across the globe use the reports to evaluate their journals' impact in their field and promote them to the research community – so each year's update is met with great anticipation. In this episode we welcome guests from the Institute for Scientific Information™ at Clarivate, as well as publishers Hindawi, Frontiers and SAGE Publishing, to talk about the recent 2021 Journal Citation Reports release and the treasure trove of new features inside. Together we'll be exploring the fundamental role the JCR plays in supporting academic research and accelerating the pace of innovation by providing transparent, publisher-neutral journal intelligence and helping those in the research community make better informed, more confident decisions.
