A road trip to a gypsum quarry in Algeria led Youcef Sellam on a journey of scientific discovery. From the road trip to an internship in Italy, he and his colleagues later discovered microbial fossils—marking a first for Algerian gypsum. As a Ph.D. student at the University of Bern, Sellam and his team took this research further. They used a special instrument to detect the chemical signatures of these ancient microbes, demonstrating a method that could one day help search for traces of life on Mars. Their findings, published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, highlight how chemical analysis can reveal biological traces in minerals. Join planetary scientist Beth Johnson and Youcef for a discussion of how this research brings us one step closer to understanding how we might detect past life on the Red Planet. Youcef Soufi's Homegrown Radicals: A Story of State Violence, Islamophobia, and Jihad in the Post-9/11 World (NYU Press, 2025) tells the story of three Muslim university students who disappeared from Winnipeg, Canada. In this gripping narrative, we learn that these young men had become “radicalized”, which brought the attention of Canadian and American security agencies to this small town. What is different about the journey we go on with Soufi is the story of families, friends, and the Muslim community who are left behind grappling with loss, grief, and hyper-surveillance as the result of the disappearance of these young men. From university to the courtroom, and beyond, Soufi's moving narrative forces us to grapple with the affective injury faced by the Winnipeg Muslim community as discourse of radicalization, Islamophobic state policies, and military response to the war on terror, reminded Muslims of the ungrievability of their lives. Soufi's writing is poignant; he moves between his scholarly command of Islamic history, archival data, and interviews and deeply vulnerable auto-ethnography. The book is a must read for anyone interested in Muslims and Islam, especially in North America. Learn more about your ad choices.

Youcef Sufi's book The Rise of Critical Islam: 10th-13th Century Legal Debate (Oxford University Press, 2023) is a fascinating and engaging exploration of the history of critique in Islamic legal and intellectual history. It does this specifically through a case study of dispensations and disputations, known as munāẓarāt in Arabic. Dispensations were a practice of debates that were an important feature of a jurist's practice and an opportunity for him to showcase his juristic skills – for instance, they were sometimes tasked with having to defend a position that they disagreed with or that contradicted the opinion of the school they followed and represented. Ultimately, these dispensations serve as an excellent case study of the tremendous diversity of thought and the celebration of difference of opinion in Islamic history and Islamic law; they also show that for Muslim jurists, engaging in these debate was an act of piety, as a part of their personal and intellectual quest to discover God's law. In our conversation, we discuss the origins of the book, some of its main points and arguments, a detailed description of these dispensations (such as who participated in them, who was excluded from them, how the debate topic was chosen), the shifts and developments they undergo with time, and the role of ijtihad (or independent reasoning or re-interpretations of Islamic law) and taqlid (or sticking to the past scholarly positions) in these debates. We also discuss specific themes such as child or forced marriage, women's right to divorce, which are perceived to have been settled matters but it turns out, not quite! And finally, Sufi explains why and how these disputations came to an end and what jurists participating in them may have imagined the role of later generations to be in the process of Islamic law-making. Shehnaz Haqqani is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Mercer University. She earned her PhD in Islamic Studies with a focus on gender from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Her dissertation research explored questions of change and tradition, specifically in the context of gender and sexuality, in Islam. She can be reached at haqqani_s@mercer.edu.

We're dipping our toes into new waters with this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we welcome director CHARLOTTE MIKKELBORG to discuss - and explain - the exciting new multisensory Augmented Reality game TIME DETECTIVES: THE MYSTERY OF THE MARY ROSE, while actor THEO ROSSI talks about his terrific new film EMILY THE CRIMINAL. A first of its kind from Picture This Productions, TIME DETECTIVES: THE MYSTERY OF THE MARY ROSE is a multisensory augmented reality game designed to bring history to life through partnerships with key cultural heritage sites across the UK and overseas. With this first app, the game explores the sinking of the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's favorite ship! A fascinating concept and even more fascinating game app (which I subsequently was able to download and "play"), it's almost like playing Nancy Drew in history as you try to ascertain what caused the sinking of the Mary Rose. Venturing into new territory herself with this multisensory augmented reality, take a listen as director CHARLOTTE MIKKELBERG talks about how the project came to be, the considerations when selecting the piece of history to explore, the museums and trusts available and interested in this multisensory experience (you can go to the Mary Rose Museum and with your phone and this app, experience the smells and sounds of the ship as you walk through the exhibits), selection of artifacts to include, how the skulls found in the wreckage were used to recreate the actual faces of some of the crew adding new levels of reality to this experience, "player" options as they move through the experience leading to the final presentation to the King with their theory on the sinking, and more. And then we turn a bit criminal but with a lot of fun and laughs with my prerecorded exclusive interview with THEO ROSSI talking about EMILY THE CRIMINAL, the story of Emily, a young woman saddled with student debt and unable to get a decent job due to a minor criminal record. Desperate to make her loan payments, she signs up to be a "dummy shopper", buying big ticket items like big screen televisions, appliances, and even cars with stolen credit cards, all under the tutelage and watchful eye of the oh-so-handsome and charismatic Youcef. Craving more and more edge-of-your-seat thrills thanks to the cash and the adrenaline-fueled exhilaration that comes with pulling off black market capitalism, Emily soon finds herself not only deeper in the crime but falling for Youcef. Take a listen as Theo talks about the appeal of the project, digging into the character of Youcef and breathing life and resonance into him, finding notes of sympathy, collaborating with Plaza and director Ford in developing their characters and the progressing dynamic between them, Theo's research into credit card fraud and this kind of black market capitalism and the most interesting things he learned about it, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Wading in the wiles of crippling debt can be a scary thing....On this episode we're tackling an excellent little piece of indie cinema that is in select theatres now. We're looking at 'Emily The Criminal'.Emily (Aubrey Plaza) is saddled with student debt and locked out of the job market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together, they hatch a plan to bring their business to the next level in Los Angeles. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with first time writer/director John Patton Ford about the origins of this story, getting someone like Aubrey Plaza on board as she works against type and so very much more....
