#227 Outliers: Rose Blumkin — Women of Berkshire Hathaway

Rose Blumkin didn't just build a business. She revolutionized retail. After fleeing Russia with $66 in her purse, she opened a basement furniture store in Omaha at 43 years old—with no English, no education, and no connections. Her formula? Sell cheap, tell the truth, don't cheat the customer. Nebraska Furniture Mart would survive depressions, fires, lawsuits, tornadoes—and eventually become a billion-dollar empire Warren Buffett called “the ideal business.”  Learn how Mrs. B's relentless focus, radical simplicity, and unbreakable work ethic built an empire from scratch—and what her story teaches us about business, resilience, and the power of earned trust. This episode is for informational purposes only and most of the research came from "Women of Berkshire Hathaway" and oral history interviews with Rose Blumkin and her daughter Frances. Send us a textIn this sermon, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath draws parallels between the lives of Isadore and Nathan Strauss, the parsha's narrative of Yaakov's journey back to the Holy Land, and the enduring challenges and mission of the Jewish people throughout history. By exploring the Strauss brothers' devotion to Israel, Yaakov's escape from Lavan, and the recurring pattern of antisemitism in history, the sermon highlights our divine purpose: to illuminate the world with G-d's presence and moral clarity, wherever we may be.Key TakeawaysThe Choices That Shape History: Nathan Strauss's decision to stay in the Holy Land, missing the Titanic, underscores the importance of placing values and mission above convenience. Yaakov's choice to leave Charan, despite its challenges, reflects the yearning to reconnect with our roots and divine purpose. The Recurring Pattern of Antisemitism: From Yaakov's struggles with Lavan to Yitzchak's conflicts with Avimelech, the Torah reminds us of the historical cycle where Jewish success leads to envy, displacement, and eventual recognition of G-d's blessings. This pattern continues in modern examples, including the complex relationship between Jews and host nations like China. Our Divine Mission: Beyond economic or social contributions, Jews have a spiritual role in every community—to inspire faith, accountability, and recognition of G-d. The absence of a Jewish presence often leaves a moral and spiritual void, as seen in Avimelech's plea to Yitzchak: “We have surely seen that G-d was with you.”Actionable Inspiration: Recognize that every moment and decision—whether supporting Israel, staying true to Torah values, or fostering spiritual growth—contributes to our mission of being a light unto the nations.#Bible #ParshatVayeitzei #BibleStudy #Torah #TorahPortion #Rabbi #chabad #lubavitch #JewishHistory Managing Dental Drama PodcastOwning, operating, and managing a dental practice can be difficult and sometimes...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? The experiences of the Irish in France during the war were overshadowed by the threat of internment or destitution. Up to 2,000 Irish people were stuck in occupied France after the defeat by Nazi Germany in June 1940. This population consisted largely of governesses and members of religious orders, but also the likes of Samuel Beckett, as well as a few individuals who managed to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in internment camps (or worse). Isadore Ryan's book No Way Out: The Irish in Wartime France, 1939–1945 (Mercier Press, 2018) examines the engagement of the Irish in various forms of resistance. It also reveals that the attitude of some of the Irish towards the German occupiers was not always as clear-cut as politically correct discourse would like to suggest. There are fascinating revelations, most notably that Ireland's diplomatic representative in Paris sold quantities of wine to Hermann Göring; that Irish passports were given out very liberally (including to a convicted British rapist); that, in the early part of the war, some Irish ended up in internment camps in France and, through the slowness of the Irish authorities to intervene, were subsequently sent to concentration camps in Germany; and that a couple of Irish people faced criminal proceedings in France after the Liberation because of their wartime dealings with the Germans. [1]I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman. Ego sum vitis vera, et Pater meus agricola est. [2] Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Omnem palmitem in me non ferentem fructum, tollet eum, et omnem qui fert fructum, purgabit eum, ut fructum plus afferat. [3] Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you. Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis. [4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest fere fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis. [5] I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. Ego sum vitis, vos palmites : qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere. [6] If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. Si quis in me non manserit, mittetur foras sicut palmes, et arescet, et colligent eum, et in ignem mittent, et ardet. [7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. Si manseritis in me, et verba mea in vobis manserint, quodcumque volueritis petetis, et fiet vobis.

David Bermudez and Bob Isadore are a same-sex couple who have been together for 47 years. David, a veteran of the Stonewall uprising of 1969, met Bob, in 1974, when the two were both living and working in New York City. At the time, David was a Manhattan-based interior designer. Bob, was an assistant buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue who hailed from Queens. As they tell PFLAG Cape Cod's Rick Koonce in this insightful, wide-ranging interview, their relationship began with a bounced check, and a chance glance by David of Bob in a New York City phone booth. Soon afterwards, the two realized they'd both met someone very special. And so began a decades-long relationship between a Portuguese Catholic from Fall River, Massachusetts who loves to cook, and a burly, Bronx-born Puerto Rican who loves Judy Garland, and has a passion for rhythm and blues.
