Send us a textA junk drawer, a junk closet... or a junk garage? So many options for all the bits and pieces we tuck away and forget. In this wildly whimsical and deeply human story, we dive into the oddities of our inner clutter—the half-forgotten dreams, the rituals we abandoned, the old pence stuck to chewed-up gum, and the pink pipe we definitely didn't put there.Through Anja's playful narration and sudden detours into the surreal, The Junk Drawer becomes a metaphor for all the parts of ourselves we tend to shove aside. But what if—just maybe—that drawer holds a little magic too?✨ Join the next Dreamy Cappuccino Gathering: https://www.anjakersten.com/events

join jessica libor of the creative heroines podcast and myself as we talk about investing in your business. we discuss and share some wise investments you can make into your business as well as unregrettable investments we've personally made. when i began my art business, every bit of profit went right back into my business. there were grids to buy for art shows and fairs, paint to replenish and money to use to build and keep up a website. sometimes they were simple investments like books or medium sized investments like online courses. eventually, i could be more strategic as my income increased, i bought a nice camera, a car lol and now i'm building a studio in our front yard. there's also the time and energy that you invest in your business and the priorities you keep. while jessica went to art school and i went to architecture school, we both agree that it's important to follow your heart and find the path that's best for you. even more important is to find gratitude within your unique path and to support other artists on their path. we all will have different goals and dreams for our art and it's crucial to stay positive with other artists (and ourselves), to remember that there is room for all creatives and that the world needs your work and creativity. Terry Thompson is a self-taught American artist, born in Chicago, Illinois. He currently lives and work in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the Army for 9 1/2 years from 1980-1990. He also well-known veteran club dj/producer/promoter with releases on the London, UK record label Defected. Hear ye, hear ye, I have finally made another episode and it's about HOPE again! Why? You know why... We all need some hope for the future nowadays because cultivating hope is the only way we can:A) make ourselves feel betterB) make the future betterIn this episode I will philosophize about how we can hang onto hope in these even stranger times with a few simple methods and how being/getting/staying creative can help us all.P.S: There are a couple of small sound quality issues with this episode, but they are isolated. Thank you for your patience and understanding; for I tried to fix them, but this is the best I could clean it up without losing my mind. NOTES:I have decided to switch the music to a song I had made myself in 2007 called "Peace It Together" with GarageBand. It seemed like the right theme and also I still like it, which maybe means that's it's not complete crap. Sometimes life gives you lemons and you make lemonade or margaritas ( I kind of love them both). This month, life threw me lemons, pies in my face and a cute little kitten friend, but as much I am taking all (almost) like a champ, I haven't been able to tend to my podcast much. I didn't want you to think I have abandoned this pursuit, so here is my short and sweet episode full of excuses and very loud purrs. Yes, if you are a cat person, you will be happy about that. in our personal lives, as well as in our careers, it's easy for many of us “people pleasers” lol to feel that happiness & success only come from giving our all and even more often -- way more than what is required, expected or anticipated. don't get me wrong, it served me well in so many situations -- but the expectations started to weigh on me and the only way i could feel less anxiety, depression & stress was for me to let go of it all, reevaluate, and make a new plan. let's look at 5 examples of how the principle of under promise & overdeliver can make a great difference in our lives and the lives of those we love and associate with along our journey. If you want to make better art and are practicing lots, but not quite getting where you want to be, this episode is for you. At the end of episode 328 of the Creative Pep Talk (my favourite podcast), Andy J. Pizza says to go reach out to someone that you know is "your people" and make a connection. Since he was a major inspiration for this podcast AND I sincerely think that we are kindred spirits, I decided to reach out to him by making a little episode for him! His podcast came into my life just at the right time and motivates me weekly to stay on my creative path. If you aren't yet listening to it, WHY AREN'T YOU? In the 10 months that I have been listening to /watching to his content, Andy J. Pizza quickly became one of my creative heroes and if you like my podcast, I bet you'd LOVE his.And for those of you who scoffed at the idea of listening to an episode made for someone specific: This episode also contains the story of how the name "Creative Elixir" came about, but if you insist, you can skip ahead. Yeah, I made a whole other episode that isn't this one, it's episode 11 and it's about how you can make better art. OK? OK... World-renowned artist Makoto Fujimura, author of “Art + Faith: A Theology of Making,” draws from his deep well of reflections on creativity and the spiritual aspects of “making” in this poetic, inviting conversation with Jenn Giles Kemper. Experienced in the Japanese art of Kintsugi (mending broken ceramic with lacquer and gold to create something new) Makoto (Mako) talks with Jenn about what he's learned about the very nature of our Maker God through this process of being “not only restored, but made new.”On this episode of Sacred Ordinary Days with Jenn Giles Kemper, Mako explores:Why art is an outpouring of God's graceHow the trauma of living near Ground Zero on Sept, 11, 2001 has been reflected in all of our lives during the 2020-21 global pandemicThe generativity of humanityHow art asks more questions than it answersHis journey in Christ through different denominations and traditionsHow art is a gift but not a commodity, and how that reflects God's graceAbout the guest: Makoto Fujimura, an artist, arts advocate, writer, and speaker, is the founder of the International Arts Movement and the Fujimura Institute, and co-founder of the Kintsugi Academy. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey and is a leading contemporary artist whose “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of the New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time”.Mako's art has been featured widely in galleries and museums around the world, and is collected by notable collections including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Huntington Library, and the Tikotin Museum in Israel. He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City's legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra. We're proud to carry his books Culture Care and Art + Faith in our spiritual formation bookshop.Reflection point: In Art + Faith, Mako writes that “To be effective messengers of hope we must trust our inner voice, our intuition that speaks into the vast wastelands of our time.” When is a time you have not trusted your inner voice? What was at stake? And in the episode, Jenn mentions that Mako says that the book of Psalms, God's poetry, gives us an ecosystem of metaphors and a garden of words to describe the thriving offered to us in the New Creation. What would it look like for you to spend some time in a Psalm this week? What might God have to tell you through the Psalm you read, as it relates to new creation?Links:Art + Faith: A Theology of Making by Makoto FujimuraMakoto FujimuraCulture Care: Reconnecting with Beauty for Our Common Life by Makoto FujimuraAbout Sacred Ordinary Days with Jenn Giles Kemper: Sacred Ordinary Days with Jenn Giles Kemper explores faith where it hits the pavement of work, relationships, creativity, and real life. Email marketing for artists can be so very overwhelming! While social media has done wonderful things for artists...goodness they are almost a modern version of galleries...telling our stories, explaining our process and the meaning behind our work...BUT. And that is a very big BUT...for we don't own the social media platforms and if they shut down tomorrow we'd not be able to continue those connections. Sending regular emails is the perfect way to continue to connect with our collectors and those who want to learn more about our work. We need a list. But where to start and how to continue to grow this list? In this episode I'll share 7 ways you can start or grow your email list. This month, our CANDY COLORED CLUB (my biz memberships for artists) has been talking all things email list. You can join in the conversation by participating in my monthly instagram live chats, or sign up for my email list and join us with full access when we open enrollment in March.
