I met my Natalia Antelava about a month ago in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the storytelling festival she co-founded that I spoke at. At this festival, I spoke alongside Sean Penn, Armando Iannucci, Aaron Rasmussen, Joe Sabia, Sarah Natochenny, and 70 others. I was impressed by her then and I am much more impressed with her now! She's an incredible human that has gone through so much, been to so many places, and continues to give a damn in very beautiful and meaningful ways. A co-founder of Coda, Natalia is an Emmy-nominee and award winning journalist. Originally from Tbilisi, Georgia she started her career freelancing in West Africa. Since then, she had been BBC's resident correspondent in the Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East, Washington DC and India. She has covered the Russian invasion of Georgia in 2008, the war in Eastern Ukraine and reported undercover from Burma, Yemen and Uzbekistan. Her investigations into human rights abuses in Central Asia, Iraq and the United States have won her a number of awards. In addition to a career in broadcast journalism, Natalia has also written for the Guardian, Forbes magazine and the New Yorker among others. Over the past few years, Natalie co-founded two incredible organizations we talk about at length in today's conversation—Coda Story and ZEG Storytelling Festival. NEXT STEPS: - Follow Natalia on Twitter. - Follow Coda Story on Instagram and Twitter and consider supporting them on a monthly basis. - Check out what happened at ZEG Storytelling Festival last month and consider joining us next year! You most definitely must add Tbilisi to your travel plans. ___________________________________________ Reach out to us anytime and for any reason at hello@letsgiveadamn.com. In the twenty-five years since the Japanese media franchise Pokémon launched in the US, it has become a staple of American culture — from trading cards to t-shirts, from action figures to videogames, from Oreo cookies to McDonald's Happy Meals. And of course, the animated series.Since the launch of that series the biggest stars have undoubtedly been aspiring Pokémon Master Ash Ketchum and his adorable pocket monster sidekick Pikachu. But now fans must say goodbye to these iconic heroes as the series moves on without them. Host Scott Detrow talks to Izzie Ramirez, culture writer for Vox Media, about the legacy of the show and the future of the Pokémon franchise after Ash and Pikachu. And we hear reactions from fans and from Sarah Natochenny, who has voiced Ash since 2006.

In this episode, we're sharing some of our favorite moments from the past 25 episodes. We've had awesome guests and some fun and inspiring conversations with people. Part 2 of this episode contains excerpts from some of our guest's responses to our question about a "back-up plan". Once they were bitten by the muse of music, voice artistry or working in a studio environment, they did whatever they could do to make that their career without falling back on a back-up plan. No one was an overnight success and they all have worked, and continue to work hard to keep their passion alive. Featured guests include Ray Luzier, Greg Wells, Glenn Rosenstein, Brad Divens, Rich Redmond, Tony Succar, Steve Marcantonio, Sarah Natochenny, Tony Grey, Mason Lieberman, Jose Rios, Juanita Copeland, Matty Mullins and Kayleigh Moyer. Serial Box has been a leader in creating original content that offers subscribers the ability to listen to programs. Last month, the platform finished their first Marvel collaboration, Marvel's Thor: Metal Gods, and now this month they've begun a season of a new one: Marvel’s Black Widow: Bad Blood. This story is 14 episodes long and comes from an all-female writing team led by Lindsay Smith (Serial Box's Orphan Black: The Next Chapter), with writers Mikki Kendall (Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot and Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists), L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black), and Taylor Stevens (Vanessa Michael Munroe series), and screenwriter Margaret Dunlap (Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance). Additionally, it's narrated by acclaimed voice actress Sarah Natochenny (Ash Ketchum in Pokémon). I got the chance to sit down with Natochenny to discuss her work on the project and voice acting in general. In Marvel's Black Widow: Bad Blood, someone has stolen the Black Widow’s blood, and now she must find them before it’s too late.

We’re starting off this decade of the podcast by discussing a bunch of stuff we did last year! That’s right, it’s time to extensively cover all our adventures at the third convention we attended in 2019, Anime NYC! You’ve heard us go over all the news out of the con a few episodes ago, but this time around we’ll be going into what we personally did there - all the panels and events we attended, and all the people we met! It was a big con for us in many ways, and we got to hang out with a bunch of our friends that you’ll be hearing on this podcast, including Sakaki from the Weekly Shogakukan Edition twitter and blog, Jecka from the same blog, and Marion from Good Friends Anime Club, the Haikyuu podcast View from the Top, and an upcoming Dorohedoro podcast I’m excited to listen to! As you might have guessed, having five people on to discuss what they did at an incredibly busy event takes a while, which is how we’ve ended up with the 4+ hour long podcast you’re about to listen to. Believe it or not, this is but the first of a series of long podcasts we’re starting off 2020 with, as the Best of Manga 2019 episode we recorded also ended up being nearly five hours long, and we have several other incoming podcasts that have ran long besides. Suffice to say, one of our New Year’s Resolutions for Manga Mavericks this year is recording shorter podcasts, both for your listening convenience and our time and sanity! But let me ask you, are you a person who prefers long podcasts like this, or wants them shorter? Do you enjoy these convention report episodes, or are there types of episodes you’d like us to do more of instead? You can let us know all this and more by taking our annual Manga Mavericks podcast survey, which is currently live through February 1st! SURVEY LINK: https://s.surveyplanet.com/UpCz9Mfs This year we wanted to give our survey-takers a little treat as thanks for their feedback, so we’re running a giveaway contest that all survey-takers are automatically entered in. Just fill out our survey, and you could win a FREE volume of manga that we have on hand to give out! Besides the survey, if you want to support the show and help us keep doing what we’re doing, throw us some love over at the Manga Mavericks patreon. Supporting us on Patreon also gives you guys special rewards too! For example, you may have heard the interviews we recorded with Pokemon voice actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz as well as Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino on our previous episode, where we included an abridged version of the interviews that included just the questions we asked. We’ll be uploading the full, unabridged interviews exclusively to our Patreon, so if you want to hear more questions and conversations with Sarah, Lisa, and Tomino pledge to us for just $5 or more for complete access to those as well as ten of our monthly bonus pods EXCLUSIVELY available on our Patreon! We also have full transcripts of our interviews with Sarah and Lisa written up on All-Comic.com for you to check out as well! PATREON LINK: https://www.patreon.com/mangamavericks There’s more to say, but I’ll let you listen to the rest in the podcast proper! And trust me, we have A LOT to talk about... A couple of months ago we did some massive podcasts to cover everything we did at Anime Expo, and now we’ve got to do the same for Anime NYC! We’re starting off with our long overdue roundup of all the news that came out of the con, which includes tons of licenses and some big announcements. We would’ve just attached the news to our con report, but that ended up being a five hours long conversation all by itself! So, rather than make a five and a half hour podcast, we thought it’d be better to just split it up into two episodes... I didn’t just want to make this a news-only podcast, though, so we’re also throwing in some special bonuses. That’s right, we’re including excerpts from all three of the interviews we recorded at the con! We interviewed veteran Pokemon actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz, and the father of Gundam himself - Yoshiyuki Tomino. I’ve been a huge fan of all three for a long time, so being able to interview them and discuss their careers and passions in person was an incredible experience. They answered some interesting questions too, so we’re excited to share their one-of-a-kind insights with you! The full transcripts of these interviews will also be posted on All-Comic.com in the next week, and the full uncut audio will be made available on our Patreon by Christmas Day! Check them out for even more answers and insights from Sarah, Lisa, and Yoshiyuki Tomino!
