Eve Lewis has served on the BetterInvesting Board of Directors since 2008 where she is currently the Vice-Chair. A member of BetterInvesting for more than 30 years, Eve is an advocate for personal financial security and believes everyone can manage a successful portfolio by deploying the BetterInvesting principles. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Business Education from Northern Michigan University. As a young working mother in the early 90s, Eve was the family money manager and curious about investing. When an article appeared in her local newspaper featuring the educational benefits of BetterInvesting, she joined. In 2008, Eve was widowed. Fortunately, her life could go on without worrying about how to pay the mortgage or finance the final years of college for her daughter. She attributes the knowledge she gained through her membership in BetterInvesting as the reason her family is financially secure. Charles Bright is a native of North Brentwood, Maryland. He is married and has 2 Daughters and 2 Grandchildren. Charles Bright began his journey learning about the importance of finances when he had a paper route at the age of 11. His Mother helped him invest by buying savings bonds and told him they would double in 5 years. But, not really understanding the importance at that young age, he cashed them in before their maturity date. In 1996, through a family member, he had the pleasure of meeting a man named Daniel Garnett who gave him a share of Diebold, Incorporated stock and asked if he was interested in learning about stocks and investing. His love for numbers told him to say yes and Mr. Garnett took him under his wing. Mr. Garnett introduced him to the NAIC (now Better Investing) principles that he still utilizes today. His first major project under the tutelage would be to start an investment club. As of today, he has held various positions in the Pinnacle Group Investments and has assisted in starting at least 4 other investment clubs for others. He has taught children beginning at the age of 6 – 14 during summer camps about investing and the importance of saving money. He is passionate about teaching financial literacy and knowledge about investing to people of all ages. He believes that by teaching others the importance of investing and saving, he can pay it forward in the remembrance of Mr. Garnett for all the knowledge that he so freely shared with him. -- Try a 90-day Free Trial with BetterInvesting: https://bit.ly/BI90DayFreeTrial Grab a copy of “The Baby Billionaire's Guide to Investing: Building Wealth at an Early Age” The hashtag for the podcast is #MyInvestingStory Make sure to follow us on Social Media: Facebook: @BetterInvestingSFL Instagram: @BetterInvestingSFL LinkedIn: @BetterInvestingSouthFlorida Twitter: @BI_SEFL

Branden Bufford is a 4th generation Detroit Homeowner and 3rd generation landlord. Also, becoming a parent and having every waking moment calculated for me was stressful. I am committed to being a husband, parent, and employee but that puts me last on the priority list, and that also makes me insecure. Branden always knew real estate would be his ticket out the rat race and in his 30s, he's been hyper-focused on it. Warren Mickens is a native of Gary, Indiana, and a product of its public school system. He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Indiana's Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University. His MBA focused on Operations and Strategy, not Finance. He has enjoyed a host of challenging career experiences. Warren began his career as an engineer at Cummins Engine Company and was later the Director of the Worldwide Government Business. Warren transitioned to the telecommunications industry in the 1990s and has held several Operations and Engineering Roles since. Warren became interested in investing in the late 1980s for two reasons: 1) He was scammed by a former work acquaintance who had become a financial manager. 2) He became a father of two sons and concerns over the costs of college education and retirement seemed overwhelming. Warren's family did not have a background with financial resources. His father died unexpectedly leaving four children aged 3-16 behind when Warren was in third grade. He rolled up his sleeves and joined an investment club and decided to learn about investing. He learned a lot. It worked. Warren is active as a trustee at Rose-Hulman. Sheryl Patterson learned of BetterInvesting in 2007, at a time when she needed something to divert my attention during non-working hours. She attended a Stock Selection class taught by a chapter director. After three meetings, was asked to be a dues-paying member. Three months later, a majority of the club's members decided to disband the club and my contribution turned into my first investment loss. She stayed with the chapter but didn't join another investment club until the chapter decided to take a virtual club to the next level and become one of the early working model clubs (2008). Also attending the BetterInvesting National Conference in Schaumburg, Chicago, IL. As she took on higher positions both within the chapter and the model club, it advanced her ability to find possible stock ideas and understanding of the Stock Selection guide tool. Making her felt confident enough to start a family portfolio and become bolder with my thrift savings retirement accounts. In 2017, she retired after 35 years with the US Navy and joined my second investment club with 3 other chapter directors. Then co-taught our spring and fall SSG classes, making club visits and initiating our chapter Go-to-Meetings and Webinars. The KC Chapter would send members to Columbia to teach BI members and clubs on investing using the BetterInvesting methods. He then moved to the St. Louis area where he was elected President of the St. Louis Chapter. He joined two investment clubs, attended the Model Investment Club (MIC) and finding he has gained a lot of hands-on education on stock selection by being around other BetterInvesting members. In the past he had all his IRA and Roth accounts in mutual funds and owned no individual stocks. Today he has transitioned from mutual funds to stocks and now all accounts have 100 % stocks in them. He is now self-directing his own account which he found takes a lot of personnel time. He has adjusted to this time involvement by owning some of the stocks selections that his club has purchased. This has freed up more personnel time. The people that he has met thru his membership in the clubs has been good. Beth also authored a column for BetterInvesting Magazine entitled “Not For Women Only”, and has taught all aspects of the Stock Selection Guide through college programs, community education classes, and chapter seminars. She founded two BetterInvesting investment clubs, Grand Rapids Eager Earning Dames Investment Club (GREEDI Club) and the Holy Rollers Stock Club. She was a founding director of the Western Michigan Chapter, where she served as the education chair, vice president, president and program chair of the Great Lakes BetterInvesting Regional Conference (BIRC) in 2005. Currently, Beth is challenging her investment club members and friends to purchase a share of a dividend-paying stock for their children or grandchildren to teach them the benefits of investing. -- If you're looking for a BetterInvesting Chapter near you, check out our community at https://bit.ly/BILocalChapters or visit us at BetterInvesting South Florida Chapter Take the info from the podcast to the next level by becoming a BetterInvesting Member and joining us at our next Educational Event Grab a copy of “The Baby Billionaire's Guide to Investing: Building Wealth at an Early Age” If you have questions about the podcast or any of the programs we discuss here, email us at abetterinvesting@gmail.com Want your child or a youth you know to participate in the Summer Stock Market game? La-Vaughn retired from Xerox Corporation, after over 23 years of service, she held many positions, some of the last positions were “Project Manager”, and Product Technical Specialist. La-Vaughn currently lives in 2 states, Florida and Georgia, traveling to & from Atlanta, to manage her AIR BNB home and service her accounting clients. In Florida, she is a REALTOR and an ACCOUNTANT. La-Vaughn learned early in her life the importance of Generational wealth. During the 23 years of employment with Xerox Corporation, it was important to La-Vaughn to pay herself. She did this by investing 20% of her salary, participating in the Corporate match program, ensuring ALL bonuses were invested, not allocated to NEW purchases that could wait or were not necessary. La-Vaughn is humble to say, this early practice has positioned her to leave an inheritance for her children and her children's children. One of the national program targets of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 2000 was Economic Empowerment. Because many of our members were employed by companies who were transitioning from pension plans to Self-Directed 401k retirement plans, the national program target became particularly important. The Indianapolis Chapter's program chairman at this time was an executive at a major corporation. She recognized that we, as women, needed to strengthen our investment skills in order to enhance our own retirement portfolios. It was the 90s and stocks were hot, so were investing clubs. The NAIC model club on Long Island taught an investing class based on NAIC principles at Adelphi University. She attended and proceeded to do nothing. She needed to find a club to hold her accountable for her investing education. She attended the fall class in 98 and didn't find a club that needed new members. She created a flyer and eleven interested individuals gathered to form what became the Alchemy Investment Club in December 1998. Many came and left when they realized that investing was a slow long-term gain. Being a part of a club of strangers helped her because she knew she didn't have the luxury to be lazy. So far, things are going well and they are following through with their assignments each month. Carl Walker, a retiree from the tobacco industry shares: I have been acquainted with BI since the mid-to-late 1990s. I can't recall how that association began, but I have been reading the magazine for about 25 years. My first association with a club was forming one with fellow workers around 2000. None of us had experience and except for me no one was truly committed to the NAIC methodology, so naturally the club failed. Probably the greatest regarding investing was a suggestion by a workmate to start contributing to a job sponsored 401k However, I never lost sight of BI teachings, so I decided to join the Middle GA Investment Club. It has been a pleasure to meet with like minded investors and to start to develop better SSG skills. Robert Shaw shares, "In my investing life I have used Morningstar and their watchlist function for years to guide my mutual fund investment choices. In 2009, I attended a BetterInvesting Regional Conference in Lansing, MI, and have never looked back." There were fantastic mentors that helped me learn the BI way - people like Ken Kavula and Mark Robertson, to just name two. I joined a local model club where I continued to learn how to follow the BI principles. Currently, I am a Director for the SE Michigan Chapter, a past President, and current VP. For several years I have co-taught three different mutual fund and stock investment classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Michigan (OLLI) with a friend who is a retired research professor. I started an investment club in Ann Arbor, MI with people from our stock classes, and we are finishing our third year of investing in February 2021. We have managed to achieve an AIRR of 28.9% since our inception, a feat I think is due primarily to following the principles of BetterInvesting – but a rising market has certainly helped. Futurevest Investment Club of Wayne Country Michigan was established August 15,1998 by and between 15 dynamic women associated with long-term friendships and family relations. NAIC accounting and investing principles have served as our guide. Club activities have included attendance at BINC, visits from our chapter volunteers, field trips to companies with whom we invest, and participation in both local and online events. We have persevered through the ups and downs of the market, celebrated accomplishments, supported each other through losses and benefited from increased knowledge of investing and personal finances. In 2019, we transitioned our meetings to a combination of online and in-person meetings. This has enabled us to maintain the viability of and strengthen our club through expanded membership across several states – California, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Michigan. Members include college students, recent graduates, professionals – educators, attorneys, health providers, athletes, entrepreneurs, corporate managers- those near retirement and those who have already made it there. Years ago, a women's book group read “The Beardstown Ladies Common Sense Investing Guide” and decided they would like to duplicate their success. They were a group of 13 women, hence the name Baker's Dozen. The club celebrated its 25th Anniversary as a BetterInvesting Investment Club in 2020. Since then, club size has ebbed and flowed as people left and others joined the club. Happily, there are still two founding partners active in Baker's Dozen. During the past few years, the club has opened our meetings to visitors so they may learn more about investing and investment clubs. As a result, several new partners joined the club and reinvigorate our learning and stock discussions. Our backgrounds are varied as our members are small business owners, teachers and educators, automotive engineers, State Government Accountant, nurse, and a CEO.
