We invite you to watch or hear this in-depth interview with the new CEO of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Dr. Anthony Estreet. He holds his LCSW Credentials as well as an MBA. Dr. Estreet is a Bowie State University graduate, where he earned a bachelor's in science in psychology. He then moved on to Virginia Commonwealth University and Morgan State University, where he earned an MSW in social work and a doctorate in social work, respectively. He became a part of the MSU family in 2013. When he isn't busy training up the next generation of social workers, Dr. Estreet can be seen working with Next Step Treatment Center, an organization that offers solutions and resources for both substance use and improved mental health. He is a long-time member of the Maryland Chapter of NASW, where he has served as president. He also helps improve social work as a member of the Council on Social Work Education. During his time at Morgan, Estreet received roughly $6 million earmarked specifically as “funding for social work workforce development, research, and training. He also led the development and expansion of the first MSW program in the United States, and at a historically Black college or university, to have an area of specialized practice focused on addressing substance use disorders,” according to information released by NASW. At the top of his list of goals are his plans to grow the organization's membership, while also “addressing social justice issues, including racial equity and reproductive rights.” NASW reports that Estreet plans to “work to strengthen the social work workforce by expanding efforts to increase compensation for social workers.” Estreet said he is “honored and humbled to be the next CEO of NASW.” “I have been a member of this great organization since 2007,” he said in a statement. “As a former member of the NASW Board, I know NASW is committed to supporting social workers and the communities they serve. This organization has done phenomenal work especially in the past three years, including supporting social workers in the delivery of mental health services during the pandemic and addressing systemic racism. However, we have much more work to do, and I stand ready to work collaboratively to support our great profession.” #NASW #NASWNYS #NASWNYC #Adelphiuniversity#MorganStateUniversity #adelphi #BowieStateUniversity #VirginiaCommonwealth #CSWE #IFSW #NASWFoundation #Kelsunnontheair #NSWM #blackmensmentalhealthconference #socialwork #socialworkers #stonybrookuniversity #stonybrookuniversityschoolofsocialwelfare #brooklyncollege #suffolkcommunitycollege #molloyuniversity #albanystateuniversity #saintjosephsuniversity

Guests: Kate Sullivan, Director of the Maryland Chapter, United Sovereign Americans (USA) Vincent dePaul Gisriel, Jr. Kate provides an update on final Maryland Scorecard of election violations in excess of 85,000. She breaks down numbers for 2020 and 2022 and identifies the cause of the violations due to the excessive ballot boxes put into effect then expanded by Governor Hogan. Kate also is adamant that the voter roles must be cleaned up from dead people, wrong addresses, multiple entries due to typos in names, and other issues. Vince covers the actual election numbers for 2022 that demonstrate in 17 counties that Cox was ahead of Governor Moore significantly until the mail in ballots were counted. It is quite possible that the outcomes of MD congressional race CD6 and other county and Maryland legislature races would have been different across the state had these election violations noted on the Scorecard not have occurred. Elections have consequences and the outcomes have resulted in Kirwan blueprint for education being fully funded on the backs of MD taxpayers as well as increases in property taxes, income taxes, energy rates and minimum wage, all causing a devastating blow to Marylanders and specifically small and large businesses across the state. Many midlife women that I work with, and are friends with, fear getting breast cancer more than heart disease. The focus on cardiovascular health is often not listed on my client's health history form as an area of concern. Did you know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both women and men? Over 60M women in the U.S. live with some form of heart disease. While there are many unique risk factors for women developing heart disease, which we are going to cover in this episode, one of them is the menopausal transition. All women will experience menopause, and while some develop worse symptoms than others, the door to the 4 horsemen of chronic disease states opens up: Alzheimer's Disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.Navigating one's risk of heart disease is almost impossible to do in the conventional medical healthcare model, which is set up to help you after you've had a cardiac event, not prevent it from happening. The amount of information on the topic, specifically as it relates to midlife women, is next to silent. Women are struggling to have conversations with their doctors about menopause, let alone heart health. In doing research to prepare for this episode, I was challenged to find articles and podcasts related to midlife women and CVD risk, treatments, and lifestyle interventions. I found plenty in the scientific data, but my clients, who are non-medical midlife women, don't look there for the latest science. Most of my clients are also not having discussions about nutrition, sleep, stress management, and exercise with their doctors.I am honored to have a very special guest today, who is going to help all of us midlife women understand what our CVD risks are, what we can do to prevent heart disease, what labs and tests to ask for from our doctors, and how menopause and menopause hormone therapy play a role in increasing or decreasing our risk.Dr. Garima Sharma, MD received her Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship training at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. She was faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. and has served on the American College of Cardiology Fellow in Training Committee, Early Career Professional Committee, and the Women in Cardiology Leadership Council. She specializes in cardiovascular disease in Women and Preventive Cardiology and is the Director of Women's CV Health and Cardio-Obstetrics, INOVA Health System. For veterans of the military, the transition back to civilian life can be a struggle. Those who served during the United States' recent conflicts are much more likely to report a difficult time readjusting to life back home, according to Pew Research Center. 47 percent of veterans who served post-9/11 say the transition was difficult, -compared to 21percent of Pre-9/11 servicemembers. And that can take a toll on the health of veterans and the people who love them. The consequences are tragic, including higher rates of suicide among veterans than adults who are not veterans. Jim Cooper is a coordinator for the Maryland Chapter of ‘Heroes on the Water.' It's a national organization with chapters across the country that provides recreational and therapeutic outlets for veterans and their families. Plus, the passage of the PACT Act in August of 2022 was hailed by supporters, including the White House, as the most significant expansion of Veterans Administration healthcare in 30 years. For decades, U.S. military veterans exposed during their service to toxic substances, like radiation, chemical weapons and carcinogenic burn pits were denied benefits. Veterans who apply by August 9 are eligible to have their benefits backdated to August of last year. Through clinics and events, they teach rifle marksmanship and early American heritage to introduce individuals of all skill levels to the knowledge that was so crucial to the success of our nation's founders. Aside from the fun and camaraderie of these events, the designed takeaway is a renewed sense of civic responsibility that each attendee can then implement in his or her own community. If they can reconnect enough people with the selfless civic virtue of our forefathers, we as a nation will all be better off. If you would like to see Project Appleseed remain successful and continue to teach marksmanship to the Nation's youth, and instill the civic responsibility that we hold dear as Second Amendment supporters, find out how you can help by finding the local chapter here: https://appleseedinfo.org/schedulemap/ If you cant make it out, help with your pocketbook here: https://goappleseednow.org/?event=rwva-project-appleseed-donations Find the Maryland Chapter on FB here: https://www.facebook.com/Project-Appleseed-Maryland-264406060313831/ For more training, come check us out here: https://www.ptpgun.com/firearms-training-courses   We hope you like this episode and would consider sharing with a friend!  If you find value in what we are doing here, please consider subscribing: Rumble: https://rumble.com/user/PTPGun YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyzIAYe4EUCChF5pnA8d-iQ    Don't know what Rumble is? EP30: The Role of Social Workers in Nursing Homes

MelissaBPhD's podcast

The Role of Social Workers in Nursing Homes “The social isolation caused by COVID-19 requires an expansive workforce considering not all nursing homes have trained social workers.”— Lynn Friss Feinberg, MSW Nursing homes and COVID-19 are today's hot topics. With mounting cases of COVID-19,  nursing homes have faced many challenges, especially with providing social services. On top of helping older adults adjust to their new life in a supportive care setting and advocating for their rights and needs, social workers are faced with ethical dilemmas, stress, and fears for resident safety. What can we do about it?  Today, we are joined by Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW, and Lynn Friss Feinberg, MSW, to discuss social workers' role in nursing homes. Part One of ‘The Role Of Social Workers In Nursing Homes’ Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW, is an Associate Professor in the Baccalaureate Social Work program at UMBC. She received her PhD from the University at Buffalo School of Social Work and her MSW from the University of Michigan. Dr. Kusmaul worked in nursing homes and hospitals for more than a decade.  Her research focuses on organizational culture, trauma-informed care, and the impact of trauma experienced on the workforce. She is interested in direct care workers' experience in organizations, particularly Certified Nursing Assistants in nursing homes. She is a 2019-2020 Health and Aging Policy Fellow with Senator Ron Wyden and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She is a member of the Baltimore County Elder Abuse Coalition and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She co-chairs the Aging Committee for the Maryland Chapter of NASW, and she is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. Lynn Friss Feinberg is a Senior Strategic Policy Advisor at the AARP Public Policy Institute, responsible for family caregiving and long-term care issues.  She came to AARP from the National Partnership for Women & Families, serving as the first Director of the Campaign for Better Care. Previously, she served as the Deputy Director of the National Center on Caregiving at the San Francisco-based Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA). At FCA, she directed the National Consensus Project for Caregiver Assessment and led the first 50-state study on publicly-funded caregiving programs in the U.S. She has published and lectured widely on family care policy and practice. She has held leadership positions on numerous advisory boards and committees, including the American Bar Association's Commission on Law and Aging, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Committee on Family Caregiving for Older Adults. Ms. Feinberg is a past Chair of the American Society on Aging (ASA) Board of Directors and a past Chair of the Public Policy Committee at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).  In 2007-2008, Ms. Feinberg served as the John Heinz Senate Fellow in Aging in the office of former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. She received the ASA Leadership Award in 2006, and the Paul Nathanson Distinguished Advocate Award in 2015 from Justice in Aging for her career work on family care issues.  Ms. Feinberg holds a master's degree in social welfare and gerontology from the University of California at Berkeley. “Any facility with more than one hundred and twenty beds must employ a qualified social worker on a full-time basis.” — Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW COVID-19 spreads easily in nursing homes and older adults living in these facilities (residents) are at the greatest risk of death if there is an outbreak. This is why a lot of attention has been focused on keeping residents safe. Not only the nursing homes experiencing a shortage of PPE, but the implementation of visitation restrictions made it challenging for them to communicate with the resident's family members. We didn't have a national strategy to deal with a pandemic, and because of all of these things, nursing homes were hit hard by COVID-19.  While it's critically important to have adequate nursing certified nursing assistants, we would all agree with that if we want to improve the quality of care or people residing in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, COVID-19 has pointed out that we need to have more social support, more emotional support, and connection to the outside world. Family and friends are critically important, particularly at the end of life. That is a key component of both health care and long-term care, particularly since long term care is someone’s home! Social workers are uniquely trained to recognize the importance of family support and the social aspects of care. We need trained social workers who are willing to get involved in national conversations to ensure that we have high-quality social work that includes emotional support at the community level.  Part Two of ‘The Role Of Social Workers In Nursing Homes’ Any facility with more than one hundred and twenty beds must employ a qualified social worker on a full-time basis. However, a qualified social worker is an individual with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in social work or a bachelor's degree in a human services field, including but not limited to sociology, gerontology, special education, rehab, counseling, and psychology, and one year of supervised social work experience in a health care setting, which means that the person in the social work role may not have social work training.  The broad qualifications for social workers could be because of the same struggles we have nurse staffing requirements. Nursing homes are only required to have one Registered Nurse (RN) in the building for 8 hours a day, and that could be a RN with an associate's degree, a baccalaureate degree or higher. The majority of care delivered in nursing homes, however, is delivered by Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). “Assisted livings are uniquely challenged in the pandemic because they are not federally regulated.” —  Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW Unlike skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities are uniquely challenged in the pandemic because they are not federally regulated. There are no federal statutes that cover assisted living, and they're not required to have a social worker. So, they have faced some of the same challenges as nursing homes with less guidance and no social work support for residents or their families. COVID-19 resulted in millions of older adults living in both of these environments to be denied visitation by family and/or friends. This has been devastating to both the older adults and their family members - who are considered to be “visitors”.  Many family members of people in nursing homes took care of them at home for years before they got to the point where they needed a nursing home. These caregivers know their family member's needs, moods, and changes in condition better than anyone else. They are the eyes and ears. They are the ones who can communicate with staff and advocate for their residents.  They are care partners. And yet, when they are placed in the category of visitors, it sounds more like a luxury than an integral and essential member of the care team. They should be allowed to be in the nursing home as a care partner - not as a visitor.  These are some examples of policies that impact social work practice and nursing home residents, and social workers are well positioned to advocate for changes to both.  Real change happens one step at a time.  We must remember that shaping good public policies is a cornerstone of social work. When Jeff Mose earned his insurance license and became a financial advisor in 2002, some might have seen it as a somewhat radical career change. In truth, however, Jeff’s extensive and accomplished background in the fields of communication, education and entrepreneurship served as the perfect foundation from which to launch a career in financial services.  Today, Jeff draws upon his impressive past to provide a uniquely high level of expertise and client service. With a focus on proactive communication and education, Jeff teaches clients how to take ownership of their personal finances and confidently build toward a secure financial future.  Having successfully managed and grown businesses in the midst of all the market turmoil and economic challenges of the past 30 years, Jeff has a unique insight into the financial tools and strategies that work best in varying market conditions. He knows first-hand the importance of “financial defense,” and teaches clients how to grow their money using conservative, “bird-in-the-hand” strategies designed to also protect their portfolios from potentially devastating losses. A Maryland native, Jeff got his start in business with a part-time job in a sporting goods store while still in high school. He served in the U.S. Navy and Reserves near the end of the Vietnam War, and afterward went into sales and marketing for an upstart company called Nike. While studying mass communication at Townson State University, Jeff worked behind the scenes and as on-air talent for Maryland Public Television. From there, he moved to the executive offices as a fundraising developer. Returning to Maryland, Jeff worked as Development Director for Baltimore-based WJHU-FM, and his success there led him to similar positions with the Maryland Chapter of the American Lung Association and the historic ship, Pride of Baltimore II.  Then, recognizing that the Internet was poised for explosive growth, Jeff used his skills to become the marketing and communications manager for start-up Aether Systems, one of the first software developers for web-based handheld devices to track financial data. In 1995, Jeff helped prepare the company for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) and contributed to its eventual growth into a $12.8 billion company. After leaving Aether, Jeff co-founded the data-security company KoolSpan, Inc., and helped oversee its growth until leaving to pursue his career in financial services.  In 2009, Jeff opened his own company, adopting a unique business model geared primarily toward retirees and near-retirees and focusing on conservative financial strategies designed to provide reasonable growth, dependable lifelong income and protection from damaging losses.  Jeff has been quoted in USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, as well as featured on the cover of Senior Market Advisor.   Questions Answered:    1) It appears that there’s more than one type of annuity. If I’m correct, what are the different types of annuities?   2) With all these good reasons to love annuities, why don’t more people buy them? Studies show that just .25% of the IRA market are in annuities.   3) Pensions are the monthly paycheck for most of America’s current retirees. But that’s changing as the secure income offered by pensions is no longer being offered to the majority of today’s workers. They now have a 401k or similar retirement plans. Can these plans be counted on for a guaranteed paycheck or is that something an annuity can provide?   Grow the value of your business by 71%! On the October 20, 2015 Boomer Generation Radio program, Rabbi Address chats with Dr. Alan Steinfeld about his early retirement. In the second half of the program, the guest is Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin to discuss the 80th anniversary of the Social Security System. [powerpress] About the Guests Dr. Alan Steinfeld, an oncologist who was on the faculty of the School of Medicine at New York University, retired in his mid-50s to pursue his interests in genealogy and gardening. “I wanted the time to get things done while I had the physical strength, the mental strength, to do it. I actually stopped working full-time at age 54, worked for another year or two part-time, and then stopped completely,” he says. “In retirement, I have been deeply involved with two activities. One is genealogy. As an avid amateur genealogist for the past almost 40 years, I have used my retirement years to advance research into my family, teach the subject on various levels and use my knowledge to assist other groups (e.g, Dobbs Ferry Historical Society and the Village of Scarsdale),” he says. “I have also been a gardener for many decades. In retirement, I became a volunteer at the New York Botanical Garden. After leading tours for a number of years and working in the greenhouses, I moved to the library about 8 years ago, where I have cataloged a number of specialty collections.”   Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin On June 20, 2014, President Obama nominated Carolyn W.
