LEVER Movement Podcast

Can one return to form as an ultra runner with just two months of a recovery program? Stefanie Flippin, a Lululemon athlete, is living proof that it's possible. In this episode, Stefanie takes us through her journey as a physician, a professional runner and a coach. She discusses her recovery and training following a bone stress injury that sidelined her at the end of 2023. This eventually culminated in her triumphant performance at the Lululemon FURTHER event—a six-day ultramarathon spanning over 100 miles.   Stefanie touches on the specific challenges and adjustments in her training leading up to the Lululemon FURTHER event, particularly her cautious approach following her recovery from COVID-19 and a subsequent stress reaction in her sacrum. Thanks to the Lever system, she managed a controlled and effective return to running, gradually increasing her outdoor activity while managing the load on her body to prevent further injury.   Beyond her achievements, Stefanie is deeply committed to fostering growth within the trail running community, promoting diversity, and improving accessibility within the sport. Her story is an example of resilience, strategic recovery, and the innovative use of training tools like the Lever Movement system to overcome setbacks.   Quotes “I'm really opposed to the idea of waiting until your golden years. People just work so, so hard. You can work hard but still enjoy the moment that you're in now and not waste—I don't want to say waste your youth—but these are the golden years. Every moment is that. I don't think that we should wait until we're 65 to pursue what sets our heart on fire.” (16:09 | Stefanie Flippin) “What do I actually want to accomplish in this sport? Is it purely performance-oriented? And I came to the conclusion that it's actually not. My performance goals are very important to me and I feel like I hold those tightly in one hand. But on the other hand, I feel like it's also just as important to me to build community, to empower other runners, to build diversity in this sport, and to make it as accessible as possible.” (19:34 | Stefanie Flippin) “Regardless if the athlete wants to continue on, I want them to have a good and positive empowering experience with the race and just their training along the way so that it's not something where they cross the finish line hating the sport and the experience they just had.” (24:14 | Stefanie Flippin) “It was really, really nice to have the lever system where I could just offload a ton of body weight, but then just run for 20 minutes. And it actually feels like overground running without that stop, start, stop, start.” (34:01 | Stefanie Flippin) “I want to get a good feeling racing. Not to say that it's non-competitive, but just something that feels good. And I think that that's always smart. That's something that I recommend to any level of athlete entering back after injury. You don't need to stress yourself out by entering into a national championship race. Just set joyful goals, make it fun again.” (44:07 | Stefanie Flippin)    Links Connect with Stefanie Flippin: https://www.instagram.com/stefanieannflippin/ https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/  https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

This is our new take on this format. Instead of addressing specific training and racing topics, we want to know about the philosophies and evolution behind some of the best coaches in our sport. Mario emphasizes the importance of building long-term relationships with athletes and the value of trust and longevity in coaching. He also discusses the significance of taking risks and setting big goals in athletic performance. Mario addresses the challenges of imposter syndrome and the importance of understanding the athlete's context. He also shares his thoughts on enduring vs absorbing training and the impact of social media on athletes' mental health. In this part of the conversation, Mario and Stefanie discuss the impact of social media on athletes and the importance of using it in a healthy way. They also explore how to evaluate new training methods and trends, emphasizing the need for self-awareness and critical thinking. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the creative aspect of coaching and the joy of finding unique training solutions. Takeaways Building long-term relationships with athletes is important for trust and unlocking potential. Taking risks and setting big goals are necessary for athletic success. Understanding the athlete's context and providing support beyond training is crucial. Enduring training without absorbing it can hinder progress. Two days ago Lululemon altered the face of women's running by announcing their Further initiative and ten new Global Ambassadors that include some of the best and most interesting women in the running community. One of those amazing women is my good friend, and friend of the pod, Stefanie Flippin. In this episode we breakdown everything about this partnership, how it came about, what it means for the running community, and she illuminates what contracts and compensation actually look like for U.S. pro runners. Here is what Stefanie wrote about the partnership on Instagram: "Six months ago I took a call with Lululemon. The conversation led with “we want to support you as a human and all of your career paths and endeavors that make you you.” It's not an exaggeration when I say that this is a dream partnership. I'm so incredibly grateful to be working with the very best in the industry to accomplish everything that makes my heart sing: pushing for equity and change in athletics, ultrarunning, and sport science. The holistic support I've been provided is finally allowing me to focus on my career as a professional athlete, from mental performance and sports psych support to dialing in every aspect of my physical health. The team is everything. I am so excited to be embarking on an epic journey with the brand and my teammates into next year and beyond to see how far women can go. I've had the time of my life thus far and I can't wait to see what lies ahead! So much more to come! It feels good to be home." “When we don't behave how we are expected to, based on stereotypes, it's jarring for people!” - @irunfortheglory “I definitely did not see many athletes that looked like me, so that's been on the forefront of my mind now in my own professional running career.” - @stefanieannflippin This was an incredibly meaningful and candid conversation between Mirna Valerio, Stefanie Flippin, and Carolyn Su. We covered topics ranging from our own, personal journeys in the sport; to how we push back against the negative stereotypes and status quo of who belongs in the outdoors; to what motivates us to keep showing up!  Thank you to everyone who chose to come to our first, live recording in the midst of a very packed marathon weekend! Your presence meant the WORLD, and the Q&As could've easily made for a whole other episode — y'all kept us on our toes! And of course, a BIG, BIG THANK YOU to the entire lululemon team, particularly the Boston team, for not only making this show happen, but for how you make each of us feel fully seen, valued, and empowered to strive after our goals and to not be deterred by those who don't yet understand. We hope this episode does the same for everyone who listens! Please leave a rating and review, and let us know your thoughts! We'd love to hear from you. May we continue to listen, learn, and work together in making strides towards a more equitable and inclusive sport! “The more we continue to show up in these outdoor spaces, the more we are disrupting the narratives and common perceptions that people have about who we are, who we are ‘supposed' to be, and what we can or cannot do.” - @themirnavator Show Breakdown: 06:15 - Stef's time running in 26.True Marathon 07:30 - Mirna's time at Culture Shifters for People of Color in snowsports. The February episode of Coach's Corner LIVE on Relay is out and it may have been our best one yet. Many Relay subscribers sent in questions about the mental side of running/racing and they were fantastic. Over the course of an hour we answered the following questions: "I enjoy running far, but am looking at making the leap from doing 50 milers as my longest ever distance to my first 100 miler in the fall. How do I conceptualize and build mental strength in training, knowing I'll be running twice as far as I ever have?" "How do I work on having the mental confidence that I can sustain my marathon effort for 26.2 miles when in training, I've only run 10-12 miles continuously at that same effort?" "I've struggled with race anxiety. I've seen a pattern when I go into a race with the plan to run the race as a workout, it takes the anxiety and pressure off and I end up running a great race. I don't seem to have too much anxiety when it comes to hard workouts. How can I work to switch my mindset on race day to feel confident yet relaxed?" "I had a tough race, and actually a handful of tough races in the past year. How do I build trust in myself again that I will have a strong race day up ahead? How do I build my mental strength back from a string of days that wore down my confidence?" We all know the importance of the marathon cycle to prepare us for our 26.2 adventures. But, what if I told you that the key to improving your marathon time may not happen during your marathon cycle? In the past two weeks athletes I've been working with have had a string of huge PR's. They are all different people, with different routines, and different running histories. But, they all one thing in common. That's exactly what this episode is all about. Have you checked out Relay yet?! Relay is a Patreon bundle that features some of the best running content on the internet. Matt Chittim's excitement is palpable for the new Patreon site, Relay, where he and 8 other running content creators have combined forces to put out at least 20 pieces of various running media each month. The site is entirely paywalled and their goal is simple, to be the best place on the internet for running content. They are setting out to do this by constantly releasing high-quality material through collaboration. “Ultimately, I have full faith this is going to work for a very simple reason. The people on the team.”Kara Goucher, Peter Bromka, Lindsey Hein, Zoë Rom, Mike "Kofuzi" Ko, Stefanie Flippin, Carolyn Su, Marcus Brown, and Matt make up the Relay team. The first week of content that Relay created is open for free on the website and will remain that way, so you can get a feel for what they are doing. Check it out for yourself, it's certainly ambitious and exciting and I'm curious to see how they do! What do you think about it all? Are you interested in a format like this? The ability to pay for the exact content we want to see is pretty powerful and it seems the world is embracing this. It's still relatively new though, and people are building new habits, so to see what works and what doesn't is fascinating. Trail running is in a fascinating place itself as an industry, so all of this could change rapidly and often. This episode image of Stefanie Flippin effortlessly flying through the air truly epitomizes Hoka's slogan, 'Time To Fly'! Stefanie Flippin is a dynamo with a huge heart, and channels it to power through long days as a foot and ankle surgeon, pro-athlete for Hoka, running coach with Lift Run Perform, and someone deeply invested in her community. She developed her love for trails and the mountains running with her dad at 7-years-old, watching him float over the hills, then come back down to get her and finish together. It wasn't until medical school that Stefanie started taking her running seriously and it really helped relieve stress and gave her mind a break from studying. Running 20-milers late at night, after crazy long shifts at Cook County Hospital during residency with her now-husband Mitchell forged their partnership. Running in an exhausted, sleep-deprived state with brain fog, unknowingly building all of the tools she would need to become a rock star at the 100-mile distance. Stefanie is the 2021 USATF 100 Mile National Champion and 2-time Tunnel Hill winner (2020 & 2021), with a 14:04 100-mile PR—which breaks down to 8:26 per mile pace!!! Stefanie enjoys pushing herself to the absolute limit to learn what she's truly capable of—which she had the chance to see at the 2022 USATF 100 Mile race, where she hit some dark patches early on at mile 40, but powered through and rallied to make the podium with help from her amazing pit crew. Topics discussed include: Transformation over 100 miles, the individual journey, best practices, lessons learned, fueling—gear—mindset, med school/surgical residency, her husband Mitchell—partnership—PIT CREW MAGIC, coming back from the dead, giving your best not being tied to race result, overcoming imposter syndrome, self-belief, growth, journaling, coaching, helping her athletes with mindset & self-belief, community, giving back to patients, athletes, and the running community. Stefanie is a force of nature who cares deeply for her patients, athletes, and the running community. I enjoyed this convo immensely and learned so much from it! I hope you all enjoy this convo as much as we did! Two weeks ago Stefanie returned to her favorite distance and finished fourth overall and top female at Tunnel Hill 100 Miler. In this episode we talk about her decision to turn pro and step away from her medical practice, why it was a good fit for her, what it's like to be nominated as one of USATF's trail and ultra runners of the year, and what about 100 mile distance suits her so well. Stefanie Flippin is back and, my goodness, what a return. I'll simply quote her Strava page as it says it all: Going home with the US 100 Mile National Title! 14:35:21: 1st woman, 3rd OA, 40 minute CR, 6th fastest all-time 100 mile for an American woman and the race of a lifetime. This was an hour and twenty minute PR for me, with 20 minute 50 mile and 100k PRs along the way. The field was the deepest pro field I've ever had the honor of lining up with. I got the absolute best out of myself by putting myself in the arena and that was the goal all along. The win was icing on the cake. So grateful!! Thank you for all the cheers!!
