Biya Simbassa took many American track and field fans by surprise on Sunday morning when they awoke to results from the Valencia Marathon and saw that the 31-year-old notched a personal best by nearly four minutes to run 2:06:53. The performance was good for 17th place in the race but moved him to No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) have run faster. Back in 2022, we paid a visit to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a video featuring Simbassa and also recorded a podcast episode detailing his career path from being born in Ethiopia, moving to the United States in 2007 and then going through the school system. He started running in high school in Minnesota and then continued his development at Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Oklahoma.  After graduating, he was coached by Scott Simmons in Colorado Springs before signing a pro contract with Under Armour to be part of the Dark Sky Distance Project with coach Stephen Haas. In 2023, Simbassa started working with Hall as his coach. The partnership lasted until this summer before Hall decided to step back from coaching. Simbassa worked with Ian Carter (a McKirdy Trained coach, who also was coached by Hall) for the Valencia Marathon build-up. CITIUS MAG spoke with Simbassa on Thursday afternoon to get details on how the performance came about. Today I am joined by Laura Galeazzo to talk about how athletes can handle the Boston Marathon qualifying process. This evergreen episode is for athletes who failed to reach the qualifying standard, those who met that standard but were not accepted into the race, and those who qualified were accepted to run Boston. This year we saw the second largest qualifying buffer ever - 5:29. Over 22,000 runners were accepted into the race and just over 11,000 qualifiers were denied admission. When the news broke on Friday, September 29 it was the news of the running world and I'm thankful that Laura, a sub-elite runner and running coach at McKirdy Trained, shared her insight to help runners in all three categories. It is great to get professional triathlete, OTQ marathoner, and accomplished coach Sarah Bishop back on the show for Coach's Corner. Sarah and I talk about the importance of racing, practicing that skill set, how to approach the starting line and pacing plan with control and excitement, and an open discussion about the long layoff from races that most people have had and how it could affect them in their fall racing. Sarah joined the McKirdy Trained staff in 2018 and has been helping runners and mothers like herself reach their running goals ever since. As a wife and mother of four young children, she understands how overwhelming life can be, and the importance of making time for yourself. Channeling this stress into daily running and training goals not only made her a better mother, wife, and coach, but also led to her to accomplishing things she never thought possible. Today on podcast the we are continuing a new format that has been a huge hit - a 360 degree review of an athlete's improvement. First we speak with Ari Hendrix, and then her coach Sydney Devore, about her remarkable improvement over the last three years. Ari Hendrix ran a 3:57 in her first marathon ten years ago. Prior to starting her running journey Ari was a college basketball player and basketball coach. As soon as she crossed that finish line she fell in love with a new sport. Since that day she has improved nearly every year and in enormous fashion. In fact, Ari just ran 2:42 in the Bayshore Marathon. That amazing performance boosted her to the 5th fastest U.S. born African American woman in history! In April of 2019 she ran 3:05 and it was then when she hired Sydney Devore, a coach at McKirdy Trained and one of the best marathoners in the country. Since 2019 Ari has worked through some significant difficulties. Three serious injuries, panic attacks, and mental health challenges. Through it all, Ari and Sydney formed an important bond that lead to tremendous success and much more. You can follow Ari at www.instagram.com/ari_hendrixroach. As we talk fitness and faith on a regular basis, make sure to subscribe to this podcast, to hear fascinating guests like professional runner and coach Esther Erb Atkins! On this episode, we talk about her "smiler" reputation, having in-person races amidst COVID-19, her 2:33 marathon finish and championships, injury prevention, performance anxiety, the race she's organized that I'm running this weekend, and more. I start with a quick update on ultra ultra runner Brandon Lott (he was on episode #56) who has now finished his second ITI 350 miler, a race that took him 10+ days in snowy Alaska. (6:07) Our chat with McKirdy Trained running coach Esther Atkins starts with why she's known as the "smiler" in the running world and why she holds her hands in the shape of a heart over her head at finish lines. It has something to do with pain, Carpe Diem, and being grateful for her competitors pushing her. In the "Fast Four," (11:50) we learn about this pro runner's current jobs at work and home, facing an injury for while now while trying to make it back to the Olympic trials, being 18 weeks pregnant (and still running kinda fast), how being a cello player helped her as a runner, and getting a tattoo with her fiance-now-husband that means "From a place of love" plus how that's connected to her spiritual faith. (18:58) As the COVID-19 pandemic continues impacting us, when could things be back to normal for races? Esther talks about it being a time of self-discovery and in-person races that are still happening, like the McKirdy micro marathon in Greenville SC that she's leading. We dive into (25:05) how she got started in running, from gaining weight on study abroad trip...to being a legendary runner at Case Western Reserve University where she was a 6-time All-American and DIII champion...to her 2:46 marathon debut in Berlin...to turning pro and beating that time by more than 10 minutes to win the 2014 national title in the USA marathon championships...to competing multiple times in the Olympic trials. (34:21) How was she able to run 26.2 miles that fast? There's also a big mental aspect to competing. (36:34) Esther has severe performance anxiety early in her running career, even hyperventilating at some national races. (40:20) Like many of us, she also listens to music or podcasts (like this one) when running solo. (44:15) As a coach and someone that's been fighting an injury for more than a year, Esther gives us the top 3 things to help prevent and come back from injuries, including misconceptions about ice and heat and running slower. Esther is also excited (51:52) and more prepared in her current pregnancy, after having 2 miscarriages. Looking forward to meeting her in person at my next marathon, my 14th state for a marathon! (57:35) We close the episode with "food for thought" about how smiling can impact your workout, a "parting gift" from The Bible about a happy heart, then a Prayer. Thanks for listening! And please share it with your friends using #RunTheRacePodcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.

In The Comeback Quotient, sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald shares the stories of top athletic comebacks, to give you inspiration and tools for your own comeback in sport or life. Every sports fan loves a great comeback. Is there a special quality shared by top athletes who triumph over great challenges? And can anyone acquire it? In The Comeback Quotient, celebrated sportswriter Matt Fitzgerald supplies the answer to both questions. He identifies these mega-achievers of astounding athletic comebacks as “ultrarealists,” men and women who succeed where others fail by fully accepting, embracing, and addressing the reality of their situations. From ultrarunners like Rob Krar to triathletes like Mirinda Carfrae to rowers, skiers, cyclists, and runners all over the world, Fitzgerald highlights and speculates on just what makes these comebacks so compelling. As for whether anyone can stage his or her own great comeback, the answer is a resounding yes: Anyone can become an ultrarealist to some degree. In the tradition of his best-selling How Bad Do You Want It?, The Comeback Quotient combines gripping sports stories with mind-blowing science to deliver a book that will forever change how you perceive the challenges you face, giving you the inspiration and the tools to make the next great comeback you witness your own. Meghan Matejka has had the kind of improvement and progression as a marathoner that so many strive for. Her first race after playing soccer and lacrosse in high school and college was a marathon. A huge challenge to say the least. From there, Meghan didn't formally engage with running for another six years, or so. Once she did, Meghan was able to bring her times down and qualify for the Boston Marathon - then just kept on improving. With the help of her coach, Heather McKirdy of McKirdy Trained, she was able to reach a new level by implementing speed work sessions and dedicated work on her mental outlook when she faced difficulties in workouts and races. Meghan had a habit beating herself up for days if workouts didn't go well. Something so many of us can relate to. Once she was able to start working through that feeling she was able to bounce back and not get bogged down in her training. As a full-time occupational therapist in school-based and adult rehab settings, Meghan understands the delicate balance of work, family, and commitment to training. She has been able to help others reach their potential as a certified running coach for McKirdy Trained. I am still using Angular! 1:37 – Chuck: It’s nice to hear people’s backgrounds and their thought process. Let’s talk about your story. To start out how did you get into programming? 2:03 – Sharon: I have a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. The web wasn’t a thing, yet, and it wasn’t an option. 4:04 – Chuck: How did you go from there to Angular and JavaScript? 4:12 – Sharon: I have a soft spot in my heart for Code Fusion. I did Code Fusion and PHP and that paid the bills for a long time. In the mid-2000’s that some of this stuff was going away and the idea of “old is new.” What is going to be my evolution of a developer? The frameworks (at this time) were starting to mature. 8:01 – Chuck: You run an Angular Meetup, so how did that get started?  8:05 – Sharon shares her story. 9:25 – Chuck: I would like to find a group that does this or that – and people find their niche and get together. What do you bring in and what do you have at the very beginning of your career and then you fill in those blanks as you go along. 5:33 – Chuck: Yep exactly. 5:47 – Guest: I am interested to see how my stage career helps my developer career! 7:35 – Chuck. 7:39 – Guest: Some people need walk-up music. 7:51 – Chuck: How did you get into Ruby? 8:00 – Guest: I was the only person that had heard about the Internet, so that’s how I got the job! I went to Barnes & Noble and read books; kids: that is an actual place! 9:24 – Chuck: You are still using Ruby right? 9:26 – Guest: Yes I am! I have explored GO and other languages, too, b/c that helps my skills with Ruby. 10:14 – Chuck: What made you switch? How do you decide to make that switch? 10:26 – Guest: This book really helped me: “Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby.” It invigorated my love for programming. 11:15 – Chuck: How long ago was that? 11:20 – Guest: About 7 years ago. 11:37 – Chuck: Some of the things you’ve done is conference organizing and speaking. Anything else? 11:50 – Guest answers the question. 13:17 – Chuck: What were your favorite talks to give and where? 13:30 – Guest: It really is hard to choose. I liked the one in Bath, UK last year: “Is Ruby Dead?” 15:00 – Chuck: Where do you see Ruby going? What’s the future like for Ruby? 15:10 – Guest: I think there are neat things that are happening in Ruby 3. 16:08 – Chuck: What other conferences are you involved with? 16:14 – Guest: Open Source & Feelings. (The guest goes into detail about what this conference has to offer!) 17:36 – Chuck: What should I be looking for there at CES (2019)? 17:52 – Guest answers. 18:39 – Guest: I have 6 Echos & Alexas in the house – do I need those many – probably not. 19:21 – Chuck: I think the same thing about giving / not giving my fingerprint to the government vs. Apple. 19:43 – Guest. 20:06 – Chuck: What are you working on now? 20:10 – Guest: If you have a problem with Ruby – I help with the Q&A and bug-support. Working on 2019 conferences, too! 20:43 – Chuck: Picks! 20:50 – Advertisement – Fresh Books! In one of the most iconic race finishes that I can remember, Hayley Sutter crawled across the finish line to finish with a chip time of 2:45:00 at the California International Marathon - a potential Olympic Trials qualifying time. The strength, toughness, and composure she showed was awe inspiring and emotional to witness. In this episode, we dive into the race, the running background that prepared her for this achievement, and the “relentlessly positive” mindset that she has cultivated. Matt Llano has run 1:01:47 and 2:12:28, but although he has run really fast, this podcast focuses on discussing the importance of being open and vulnerable and using that to feel more powerful as a runner and person. Matt is the perfect person to talk to about this, and you are sure to be inspired by his words. He was one of the founding members of the HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite Team and was a taste tester for Shalane Flanagan’s cookbook (are we not all so jealous!). Matt is probably best known though as the first openly gay American professional runner. Are you ready to harness the power within you by living as your authentic self? Then this podcast interview with Matt can help you learn a path to get there and the power it can bring to your life and running. Today’s Guest Matt Llano, an American distance runner, was one of the founders of the Hoka One One Northern Arizona Elite team. He ran for the University of Richmond where he graduated with a Triple Major in Theater, Psychology and Latin American/Iberian Studies. He came out to the world as gay in 2013 and had his story featured on ESPN. He wanted to provide a role model for gay youth, and athletes of all ages and talents. What you will learn about: How Matt’s running talent was not evident until later than most, as he was a more diverse athlete as a kid and dabbled in an after school running program, tried swimming, soccer, basketball and baseball. In high school he learned that running was the thing he was passionate about even though he was not as good at it to start. How Matt strives for a sense of personal fulfillment with each workout each day. How Matt believes in being open and honest as a professional and letting people know what is going on in their lives. There is a lot of power in being vulnerable. How Matt started working with HOKA ONE ONE and how well they support him as a whole person vs just as an athlete. Everyone has a story and HOKA ONE ONE has been helpful in working with him to celebrate the diversity in sport. Matt and I discuss our experience with running in HOKA ONE ONE shoes for the first time and how we went from being skeptics to falling in love with running in them. His favorite is the Clifton as it is so versatile. How Matt was hit by a car while running in 2011 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Matt discusses his recovery process over the next 5 to 6 months while his brain healed. He now runs with a RoadID and is hyper aware of cars and traffic now. Matt and I discuss being and living an authentic life and doing what feeds your passion not what earns you awards or money of fame. Find what allows you to have that passion as a part of your life. Another part of living your passion is raising up the others around you even if they are your competitors. Being part of a team and a unit is important. We discuss Matt’s next steps as he moves on from the northern AZ team and his desire to eventually run the Boston Marathon. Why Matt decided to work with McKirdy Trained rather than head out on his own from a coaching perspective. Inspirational Quotes: Running gave me a sense of personal fulfillment before it became a long term pursuit. Everyone has a story and has things in their lives that have brought them to where they are today, and I have found inspiration in all of the people I have come in contact with. Lifting others up does not stifle our individual effort, it enhances everyone’s success. In episode 11 we talk to coach James McKirdy of McKirdy Trained. James has built an amazing business in just a year starting from scratch and building up to over 100 clients and hiring other coaches to help him. McKirdy Trained coaches athletes who are brand new and never run before all the way up to Olympic Qualifiers. Now on to the show. How did you get your start in running? How did you transition to coaching? So was your current coaching business McKirdy Trained the business you started 14 years ago or is that more recently? I understand you coach everything from Olympic qualifiers to those who cannot run 5 mins. So what are you looking for in new clients? What makes McKirdy trained special and different amongst the other programs out there? Coaching large numbers and some internet clients I’m guessing one of the hardest parts can be communications and feedback. How are you using final surge to help with that? Let’s take an average runner. What can an average runner who contacts you look to see within their own running after they have been working with you? What does a day look like under your training such as warmup, core strength, cool downs, strides etc? After someone has a good base and has been working with you for a while, what does a week look like as far as run structures? What have been some of the biggest success stories you've seen recently as far as performance improvements? James talks about the problem with so many programs out there and combing programs without a real structure you get while working with a coach. With the client you mentioned before, those were huge improvements from a 52-year old. Did you focus on pacing and diet or what did you focus on to get those results? On any given Saturday we can see thousands of runners at local 5k’s. What can these every day recreational runners get from a running coach? You have huge growth in the last year, how did you grow your business so much in the last year to go from zero to over 100 clients in under a year?
