I was recently invited on Brodie Sharpe's Run Smarter Podcast to chat about returning to speed and hill training after injury. We took a deep dive into the topic of injury prevention and discussed safe ways to return to hills and speed. We explored the biomechanics and common injuries associated with downhill running, such as IT band syndrome and patella femoral pain. As well as Achilles tendon and proximal hamstring tendon issues caused by uphill running. We discussed evidence-based guidance on gradually building capacity and monitoring pain levels through the use of pain traffic lights. As well as the "Adaptive Zone" approach and the concept of the rehab ladder for safely progressing runs. Do you have questions about running injuries? Like, when do you know it's time to see a PT or what's the most time-efficient injury prevention routine? Then you're going to love this interview with physiotherapist Brodie Sharpe, who is one of the foremost experts when it comes to science-backed information about running injuries. Here's a small sample of what we'll cover… How do you know when you can continue to run on an injury and when you need to stop? What are common myths about preventing injuries? When do you need to go to a physiotherapist? What does return to running look like if you need to take time off? We answer these questions and much more. If you don't know Brodie, he is a physiotherapist from Melbourne, Australia and the host of the Run Smarter Podcast and the owner of the Run Smarter Physiotherapy clinic. Brodie graduated from physiotherapy in 2012 and after 3 years of working in a clinical setting became a recreational running and triathlete. After becoming a runner himself, Brodie discovered a passion for treating runners and quickly recognized a lot of running misconceptions circulating the running community. Now, Brodie is on a mission to debunk common running myths and educate runners with evidence-based guidance, to train smarter, reduce their risk of injury and increase their running performance safely. This week's show brought to you by: LMNT When coaching endurance runners of all levels to be their best, I always emphasize the need for proper hydration with the right balance of electrolytes. Most athletes I've coached are surprised to learn that their sodium needs are actually much higher than they expected and it's been hurting their performance. Part of the reason athletes need much more sodium than they think is not just because they lose electrolytes through their sweat, but also because athletes tend to eat very healthy diets. They've been told that salt is a bad thing in food and frequently don't get enough for their lifestyle. Much of the science of sodium is based on people who eat highly processed diets which also are very low in potassium. It could actually be the low potassium levels causing the issues that sodium has been blamed for! What is clear is that both sodium and potassium at the proper levels are essential for high performance (and for life in general!). That's why we partnered with LMNT to offer a free sample pack of their electrolyte mix. Head to drinklmnt.com/runnersconnect to get yours now. The Sample Pack includes 8 packets of LMNT (2 citrus, 2 raspberry, 2 orange, and 2 raw unflavored).

Brodie Sharpe is a runner and a physiotherapist based in Australia who helps injured runners get healthy and stay that way. He is the host of The Run Smarter Podcast and has certifications from The Running Clinic, the Running Repairs Course, Sports Medicine Australia, and Athletics Victoria Run as a running coach. It's a pleasure to have Brodie as a part of our community. I was a guest on his podcast where we talked all about training plans and he was a prior sponsor of the SR Podcast. In this episode, Brodie is sharing some of the biggest lessons he has learned about running a new personal best while staying healthy. It can be hard to balance prevention with performance, but Brody knows what to focus on! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

This episode is from when I was a guest on The Run Smarter Podcast by Physiotherapist Brodie Sharpe. In this episode, I talk about how recreational runners can incorporate S&C into their week to achieve favourable adaptations, whilst minimising interference with running sessions and progress. Although it doesn't need to be complex, there are some key things that runners should look out for in order to make the most of their time and effort with S&C training. Some things I talk about are: What a typical week of S&C training can look like for a recreational runner, including frequency, intensity and exercise examples Exercise dosages like sets and reps Periodisation of training when preparing for a race What runners should aim to ‘feel' during strength training Muscle activation Different types of muscle fatigue The most bang for your buck equipment for home S&C training Whether you are new to S&C or looking to optimise the application of your current routine, you will no doubt get a lot from this episode.
