Or maybe you just need to eat right and move more! False! I appreciate your insight and banter about such interesting topics. Thanks for keeping me entertained and informed. I'm about to schedule my first colonoscopy. My question is what is the best way to re-feed after this procedure? I see it as a "clean slate" - which could be good and bad. I'd like to allow for optimal regrowth in my system. If it matters, I'm a 45yo female with 3 little kids (2, 5, & 7) with history of intermittent intestinal distress (constipation, diarrhea, gas) which was worse when I was a child and also since having kids. Any ideas would be helpful. Be Well, Kelly Many thanks   Plant Paradox Kiira writes: Greeting from Spokane. Thank you for all your thoughts and comments over the years. I definitely feel kindred spirits with the two of you. My inquiry is in your thoughts and opinions Dr. Gundry's “plant paradox”. I completely agree with him about organic, grass fed, prairie meats and wild seafood. I agree that you have to be mindful about what your food eats. My question is about the minimal amount of protein he suggests. I have reservations about his recommendations for reduced protien intake and reduced red meat intake. Just curious about your opinions on this as well as his whole “plant paradox” as I know you always have one. Thank you for your time and all that you two are doing because this world is going to hell in a hand basket! Kiira   Mitigating Junk Food Diet John writes We eat a meat heavy, whole food diet in our house, in part because of you and your work. However our active, fit and healthy but rebellious teenage son gets access to and generally consumes junk food. Additionally, he will be headed to college soon and will have total control over his diet. Not a good thing. My question is: what one or two things would you recommend to mitigate this, assuming that I could get him to take one supplement, or do one minor thing, but nothing that will really require effort on his part - i.e. a multivitamin for nutritional deficiencies, a hydrogen water bottle for mitochondrial support, shilajit or liver pills, etc??? I know his being young and healthy will be a big factor, but if there is an easy and effective thing to send him away with, I'd love to know. Thanks, and keep up the good work! Maria, an FDN practitioner, and Kristin, an NTP Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition, are plainspoken friends and practitioners who share a passion for women's health, especially women's health at midlife. As both are themselves menopausal, they've refined the art and science of thriving as a midlife woman based on both clinical and personal experience. They combine individualized nutrition and lifestyle changes tailored to midlife women's needs with mindset coaching, lab testing and hormone replacement therapy education to help women thrive so that they can stop or prevent their health from spinning out of control.   Maria and Kristin share their journey from general nutrition to specialized hormonal health in this episode. We explore the profound impacts of hormones on aging, focusing on the roles of senescent cells and hormone replacement therapy. Maria and Kristin reveal surprising insights about estrogen receptors and the importance of maintaining optimal hormone levels for overall health, from hair and joints to brain and vascular health. They emphasize the benefits of cyclical progesterone dosing and debunk common myths surrounding estriol and estradiol in HRT, advocating for a personalized approach to hormone therapy.   In this episode: Why hormone replacement therapy impacts overall health beyond symptom relief. How estrogen receptors are located in unexpected areas like the eyes and ears. Why maintaining optimal hormone levels benefits hair, joints, brain, and vascular health. How hormone cycling can mimic the body's natural rhythms for better health outcomes. Why cyclical progesterone dosing is preferred over static hormone dosing. How static dosing can lead to issues like breakthrough bleeding and water retention. Why estradiol is often misunderstood and feared despite its protective benefits. How high doses of estriol can cause adverse effects such as insulin resistance. Why incorporating topical progesterone can benefit women sensitive to oral forms. Why understanding hormone health is important beyond just managing symptoms. How Maria and Kristin's book "The Great Menopause Myth" provides a unique perspective. Why women often receive inadequate medical support during menopause. How misconceptions about hormone therapy can isolate and misinform women. Why there is a need for more research using bioidentical hormones. How upcoming studies aim to compare traditional HRT to physiologic restoration. Two experts on a mission to help women educate themselves, advocate for their health, and seek out medical practitioners who can help.  I sat down with Kristin and Maria to discuss the benefits and complexities of HRT, especially the critical roles that progesterone and estrogen play in maintaining your long-term health.  We also shared simple solutions to ward off serious conditions, like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline.  This episode is packed with invaluable information that every woman should hear—whether you're just beginning to experience hormonal changes or are well into menopause. Today, I am blessed to have Kristin Johnson & Maria Claps here with me. Their personal and clinical experiences have taught them that midlife is a pivotal time in a woman's life, often accompanied by unique challenges. They recognized a gap in specialized care for women over 40 and have made it their mission to fill it. While there's an abundance of health advice for women in their teens, 20s, and 30s, the messaging becomes unclear as women enter their 40s. Kristin and Maria believe that generalized health information isn't sufficient—and in some cases, can even be harmful—for midlife women. Their goal is to empower women over 40 to take control of their health, ensuring that the next chapter of their lives is their best yet. Kristin and Maria emphasize that menopause is far more than just the loss of fertility and menstruation. They argue that menopause signifies a deeper metabolic change in the body that affects over 4,000 physiological processes, not just the commonly known symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. Even women without symptoms are impacted by hormonal shifts and need to address them proactively. Their work offers a comprehensive deep dive into hormone replacement therapy (HRT), debunking myths and urging women to take control of their health during this life stage. They advocate for personalized, multi-faceted health approaches rather than one-size-fits-all solutions, emphasizing the importance of understanding hormonal changes. Kristin and Maria emphasize that many women are harming their bodies through excessive cardio, under-eating, and stress, perpetuating a cycle of catabolic damage. They highlight the importance of nourishment, stress management, sleep, and strength training for maintaining health, particularly as hormone levels decline with age. While optimizing hormones can help, it's not a standalone solution; addressing the underlying stress is crucial for hormonal balance. They also discuss the need for a tailored approach to hormone therapy to not only alleviate symptoms but also reduce chronic disease risks, challenging the limited, symptom-focused perspective of mainstream menopause treatment. Tune in as Maria and Kristin emphasize that progesterone plays a significant role in women's health; its effectiveness is tied to the presence of progesterone receptors, which fluctuate throughout the ovarian cycle and are mainly influenced by estradiol levels. They caution against relying solely on progesterone hormone replacement therapy, especially in perimenopausal women, where estrogen decline reduces the number of receptors, leading to symptoms like anxiety and mood dysregulation. They advocate for a more holistic approach, managing stress, balancing hormones, and incorporating oxytocin to ensure well-being and metabolic freedom. This founder is spilling all the tea about Silicon Valley… Kristin Johnson of Freespoke joins Erik Cabral in this episode as she pulls no punches about big tech's dirty secrets. From privacy violations and propaganda, to how certain sites target users - this woman is on a mission to expose it all.  This fearless woman is taking on the establishment with her ethical search startup. Don't miss her bombshell revelations about how corporations actually treat users. One listen and you'll see why she's shaking up the entire industry.  Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The need for ethical technology and guardrails on data collection and use Exposing the harms of pornography and its links to human trafficking  Providing a full, unbiased view of information beyond one perspective Episode Highlights: [08:54] The Impact of Pornography  Kristin shares alarming statistics during the conversation that helped catalyze Freespoke's stance against pornography. She notes data from the National Human Trafficking Hotline showing it is the third most common form of sex trafficking after illicit massage parlors and escort services. Additionally, Kristin mentions a New York Times article describing over half of online pornographic images involve the exploitation of children. With over 36 million tips received in a single year by the National Center on Missing and Exploited Children's cyber tip line regarding online child abuse, Freespoke was motivated to become a pornography-free search platform to safeguard users, particularly minors, from inadvertently encountering such harmful material. [26:03] The Founding of Freespoke Kristin discusses how observing bias and censorship in other search engines inspired her to establish Freespoke. She focuses on respecting user privacy by limiting data collection and profiling. Kristin's goal: To enhance the search experience through comprehensive, unbiased results presented without manipulation for advertising purposes. This user-centric approach has remained core to Freespoke's alternative search model. [35:06] The Need for Accountability in Big Tech Kristin agrees that current ad-based business models often prioritize increasing engagement and data harvesting over delivering high-quality, accurate information. She notes these incentives can spread misinformation as companies focus on growth above all else. Kristin advocates for oversight and accountability of these companies' data practices. She believes competition from alternatives like Freespoke is crucial, as it treats individuals ethically while aiming to provide comprehensive results. Kristin hopes Freespoke can help drive positive reform within the industry by demonstrating a consumer-centric model that values people over profits.  Resources Mentioned: Freespoke Article: The Children of Pornhub Entrepreneurs Circle podcast is an On Air Brands production.
