Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
For many, running just one marathon is a life goal and puts you in a category with only .01% of the global population who even attempt this feat each year. But imagine running 111 marathons? Now we are talking about a very select group that has ever pulled off this rare achievement. Michael Kloepfer is one of those special individuals who runs not only for the pure joy of it but for the purpose of raising money to support cancer research at Sloan Kettering. Since he started running marathons in 1996 at age 42 through his most recent New York City marathon finish at age 70, Mike and his team have raised over 1 million dollars to help beat cancer through Sloan Kettering. He has run races all over the world and is a winner of the Abbott medal for completing all 6 world major marathons (and leads all Abbott medal winners with 77 total finishes). He has now run 28 consecutive NYC marathons and is one of 108 people with active streaks over 25 for the Boston Marathon. Of course, any achievement like this doesn't come without challenges which for Mike has included fighting his own cancer in 2024. He has received surgery, is in complete response (successful removal), and is ready to keep going in 2025! Every step is that much more meaningful for Mike now as he continues to make a difference by assisting other patients in need. If you'd like to contribute and help Mike reach his $200k goal (he has already personally raised $100k), go to fredsteam.org and either enter Mike Kloepfer or his team name, Mikey's team. Enjoy this inspirational podcast and listen to the many stories Mike shares about his adventures and people he has met along the way including Grete Waitz, Dr. Howard Scher, and Aubrey Barr (video link tells her story). A word of caution, Mike's story has inspired many, so know by listening to this podcast you may find yourself thinking about joining the marathon craze and running the NYC streets with Mike raising money for Sloan Kettering! With an illustrious career marked by American marathon records and an Olympic bronze medal, Deena offers her invaluable insights and experiences straight from Bermuda. Along the way, I indulge in local delicacies such as the iconic post-race Dark 'N' Stormy cocktail and delectable fish sandwiches. The race series boasts impressive event records, including Grete Waitz's '82 triumph with a time of 31:41 on the old course, and Eilish McColgan's sprint in 2020, clocking in at 33:28 on the new route. During the episode, I catch up with Dennis Mbelenzi, the men's marathon record holder, as he takes on the full marathon challenge and successfully defends his title. Throughout our conversations, I strive to capture the essence of Bermuda amidst lively discussions in taxis, on boats, and amidst the island's awe-inspiring scenery. In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Patti Catalano Dillon, who received the prestigious Abebe Bikila Award at the recent TCS New York City Marathon. In the 1980 Marathon, Patti became the first American female to break 2:30 in the marathon, finishing second to Grete Waitz. Patti scored many major road race victories in her meteoric career, including 5 at the Ocean State Marathon (Rhode Island) and 4 in the Honolulu Marathon. Patti explains her unique background, including her first run (in Earthshoes) around a cemetery in Quincy, MA, and her first marathon experience. "I thought I was going to die." She also discusses her continuing involvement in Native American running. Before talking to Patti, George and Amby discuss the biggest recent news in running. Amby was disappointed by how slowly the elite women ran at NYC, suggesting that maybe they should have their fees reduced commensurate with their slow times (the 1980 Patti Catalano would have been right with them). But he was impressed by the 3:19 finish of 6' 9" former hockey star Zdeno Chara. George marvelled at how the NYC Marathon once again seemed to knit an entire city together. At a time of universal concern over several wars, various groups chose not to stage protests around the Marathon. He also enjoyed a dinner gathering of some of his longtime favorite marathon runners.Where to find “Running: State of the Sport” Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Audible, Pandora, or Google Podcasts. Her får du høre hva han gjorde.
Hør episoden i appen NRK Radio

In this episode we sat down with famed NY marathon coach Glen Wiener, who has been with Team for Kids and New York Road Runners since 2008, coaching thousands of runners training for their first NYC Marathon. In this episode, he shares with us about what the NYC marathon experience is like, what makes it unique: from the early morning Staten Island Ferry to cheers along mile 18-25. Some nuggets of simple wisdom from empowering so many to finish their first marathon, and specifically on a difficult parts of the course in New York, are the highlight of the podcast! As a Team for Kids Coach, he also gets to see the life-changing work T4K does on the ground every day in the New York City area and across the country, and for this reason has remained with T4K so long. Glen is a lifelong runner with an undeniable passion for the sport and coaching others, and has ran over 25 marathons, including Boston five times, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. While he found running early and was a collegiate runner, he took up marathons later in life (25 years after college). Glen is a Road Runner's Club of America and Jack Daniel's VDOT certified coach, part of the USA Track & Field coaching program as a Level 2 Endurance Coach. In 2009 Glen's training program was featured in the New York Times alongside the programs of luminaries Grete Waitz, Jeff Galloway, and Greg McMillan. He believes that “coaching is an art based on science and works closely with runners of all abilities to help them achieve goals they never thought possible”(1). *If you'd like to contribute to Team for Kids this year or consider running/fundraising for them in a future major marathon (New York, London, Boston, etc.), check out my fundraiser page to contribute, learn more, or just see what the platform is like: https://runwithtfk.org/Profile/PublicPage/92722 As always, we'd love if you would reach out to us and let us know more about your corner of running culture, share inspiration and learning! In the fall of 1976, Patti Catalano Dillon ran her first marathon. She had been running for just 6 months but won the race with a time of 2:53. Training in “knock off” earth shoes, still smoking and knowing nothing about running, she won that day and her illustrious albeit dramatic career began. In her first 10K she placed 2nd behind Olympian Lynn Jennings at the Boston Bonne Belle in 34:50. Breaking WR after WR in the 30K, the 20K, and the ½ marathon, Catalano Dillon had 55 career wins, many at national and international races. She was the first American woman to go under 33 minutes in the 10K, and the first to break 50 minutes in the 15K. She broke the AR in the marathon twice, first in 1980 at the NYC Marathon, and then again at Boston, running 2:27.52. From the late 70's through the early 80's, Patti was America's best woman distance runner, and 2nd in the world only to the great Grete Waitz of Norway. Unknown to anyone during her peak years, Patti was struggling with Bulimia. After a disappointing 2nd place at the Boston Marathon in 1981, Patti began to be plagued with injuries and personal issues. She felt she was no longer running for herself, but for others. Her incredible story is one of a discovered great talent, of fortitude and courage, and finally of acceptance and peace. It is a tale that helps us understand what it took to be one of the greatest of all times, and how it felt to fall from such a great height, survive and then find an even greater happiness. Her amazing life will make you “laugh and cry”, and you will understand what it took for her to come through her hard times, whole and healthy.

This special 50th episode is with Patti Catalano Dillon who is a Native American, and a former World and American record holder for long distance road racing from 5 miles upto the marathon. She is a pioneer for women's athletics. She was the first American woman to run a sub 2:30 marathon, running 2:29:33 in New York in 1980, finishing second to Grete Waitz, who ran a world record (2:25:41) that day. Patti finished second in Boston in 1981, despite running into the back of a horse (as it was very crowded). She ran an American record 2:27:52. Allison Roe, had to break the course record (2:26:46) to beat her. The Brazil race story really floored me, as it really shows what makes a champion mindset, even when the odds appear stacked against you. We discuss: How she started running Tips to develop a champion mindset Overcoming challenges Brazil race story (from 1:27) Coaching advice including visualisation You can follow Patti on Instagram @pattispeaks227 If you value the content I deliver, please consider becoming a supporter of my podcast by donating via my patreon page. Like many of you, I try to keep myself in shape by working out through running. I often need some sort of goal in my future to keep myself honest on following my workouts. Usually, that's a race. The problem is that no races have been held in the United States since early March and it doesn't appear as though we'll have any for a while yet. I need something else to keep myself honest. I needed something big enough that was a real actual challenge. Something popped up on my Facebook feed about three or four weeks ago. It was an event called The Big Canada Run – a virtual run across the width of Canada that starts in Saint John, Newfoundland and going all the way to Vancouver. That's 8,000 kilometers or 5,000 miles. Canada is a massive country and much larger than the United States. The goal is to be able to do this in a year. It's intended for teams of people to do together because that's nearly 100 miles a week for an entire year. There are Olympians that don't run that much. Let alone, people approaching 50 years old with full-time jobs. I signed up with a couple of guys. This is not the first time that anyone has attempted to run across Canada. A week ago, CITIUS MAG tweeted out: "Without saying their name, what is your favorite runner known for?" It was assumed that my favorite runner was Dave Wottle, the Olympic champion who ran at my alma mater but it's not. It's not Kip Keino, the two-time Olympic champion out of Kenya and tremendous humanitarian. It's not Emil Zatopek – one of the most successful and well-loved people of all-time. It's not Joan Samuelson or Grete Waitz even. It was a man, who without identifying by name, I just retweeted it saying: “Today we got up at 4:00. As usual, it was tough.” Guest co-host: Andrea Grove-McDonough Consider donating to The Terry Fox Foundation – A single dream. A world of hope.
På søndag arrangeres verdens største maraton, New York Marathon. Jann skal løpe New York Marathon. Support the show (http://facebook.com/breakingmarathonlimits/)
Support the show (http://facebook.com/breakingmarathonlimits/)
Hvordan trente egentlig Grete Waitz? Support the show (http://facebook.com/breakingmarathonlimits/)
Programleder: Line Alsaker
