In this very special episode, Steven talks to one of the world's most recognised street artists, Cope2, alias Fernando Carlo, renowned for his affiliation with the NYPD" and is also a user of "legal" graffiti, a style which originated in the Streetart world. KEY TAKEAWAYS We draw our personal aesthetic, our likes, dislikes, our predilections and tastes from the world in which we live. Each moment is a chance to inspire ourselves. As one of the long-time pioneers of Streetart, Cope2 has seen the world change in radical ways. He has also been heavily influenced, as all good artists are, by the lifestyle and circumstances of his youth and environment. The Guernsey Speed Auction at Christie's in New York, helped to legitimise streetart as an artform, when it sold graffiti to buyers. It gave new meaning to artists, who realised they could now make a living from their work. When collectors buy a piece of art, they are also buying into the artist's story. This is why it is so important to bring your own narrative to your work. BEST MOMENTS 'The energy was like a magnet - like I wanted to do it!' 'My playground was the subway yards' 'People use the streets of New York as a canvas' 'Having a history helps a lot. Collectors love to own a piece of history' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study      Cope2 - https://cope2artlife.com ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should have multiple focuses to be a well-rounded individual. This week Julian talks to PhD student, expert in death and dying, and indigenous scholar Holly Prince. Holly came to know about palliative and end of life care through the sudden loss of her friend aged 24 to cancer. Her experience growing up in an Anishinaabe community of how death happens was greatly at odds with what she came into contact with in western medicine. ‘I couldn't understand where our knowledge was'Having felt the work of a community involved with the death of its members, Holly was shocked at the manner of dying in hospices and hospitals. The exclusion of tradition, and the lack of information doctors to carers, encouraged Holly to learn more. After meeting Mary-Lou Kelly she was thus pulled into the academic study of palliative care and started to do extraordinary work on community dying. Having spent much of her academic career looking at how to integrate palliative care and first nations communities, her studies have now come full circle; Holly's PhD focuses on how to decolonise end of life care in first nations communities; how to use the resources that are inherent in their way of life. Holly and Julian touch briefly on the historical atrocities committed by the Canadian Government to first nations communities, and the ongoing mechanism of colonialism still very much present in Eurocentric society, with new examples arising daily; First Nation communities live with the aftermath of the systematic abuse of culture, of children, and of tradition. It is time for a reckoning, and in Holly's own words ‘Its up to people who are listening to figure out what their responsibility is in this relationship and whether or not they are going to take what I say, and if they are going to use that as an opportunity for their own learning, their own self-reflection their own research on these things ‘Holly's story and conversation are nothing short of inpspirational as well as informative.‘Your life is part of a larger process and you are accountable to all your relations'Julian Abel can be found on TwitterFollow Survival of the Kindest on Twitter, Instagram and subscribe on Apple, Spotify or wherever you like to listen to get our episodes as they are released. The latest episode of 'Having a NatteRR' is now available. This week, Simon, David and Samuel discuss the case of Morales v Premier Fruits (Covent Garden) Ltd. In this case, an Employment Tribunal granted interim relief to an employee claiming unfair dismissal who used the assistance of a trade union to bring a grievance about a reduction in wages implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of Personal Protective Equipment. At the conclusion of the grievance, the Claimant was dismissed, purportedly because he had refused to consent to a pay reduction. The Claimant claimed unfair dismissal for making use of trade union services and on grounds that he had made protected disclosures. He applied for interim relief. The Judge considered that it was likely that the Claimant would be able to show that he was dismissed because he had sought the assistance of a trade union to bring a grievance (but not the protected disclosure). Also this week, there is a discussion about Simon and David's recent holidays; a discussion about whether a coconut is actually a nut; and a discussion about who would win a darts match between a crocodile and a great white shark. It really has to be heard to be believed!

Easing restrictions on domestic flights will help our airlines get off the ground. The Government's eased physical distancing rules on public transport and aeroplanes. It'll mean airline carriers are able to sell the middle seat on jets - giving them better profits on flights.Air New Zealand announced it would introduce 160-thousand fares of 50 dollars or less into the market.Soon after that, Jetstar revealed it'd be roaring back to our skies later this week. The NZ Aviation Coalition says the removal of physical distancing seating requirements on planes was great news for airlines. It cleared the way for airlines to be able to fill their planes. For travellers this will mean more available seats, more flights and affordable fares to choose from, said co-chair Justin Tighe-Umbers.''With school holidays coming up so many more Kiwis will now be able to get out around the country, visit loved ones or head on holiday.''It was a pragmatic decision from the Ministry of Health which recognised that mandatory masks for everyone on board and existing airline measures will keep travellers safe.''Having seating restrictions removed from alert level 2 means that the domestic network can continue to operate without losing up to three quarters of normal capacity which is impossible for airlines to keep up,'' he said.

The government has announced that travellers returning from Spain to the UK will now have to quarantine for 14 days, following a spike in the number of new cases in Spain. Andrew Flintham, managing director of TUI UK and Ireland, told Justin Webb he is opposed to "blanket country bans" which are "very, very challenging" and called for a "proportionate risk based approach" to quarantine. He also said: "We've called for a regionalised policy...so that in effect... if there are areas where the infection rates are lower and therefore safe travel can go ahead, which clearly the travel advice says it can, we would look to have a consistent approach that would mean the quarantine wouldn't apply for those places". 'Having and Losing a Soulmate' is my first interview on Hat Radio. It is our maiden podcast voyage! Thank you for joining us. This story is so beautiful, and told by my dear friend, Lou Berkovitz. In essence, it is a raw and candid discussion with a man who found his soul mate, Renee Roth, and was blessed to spend ten years together with her, until a very grey day when this passionate, kind and stunning woman died of lung cancer. I wanted to do my first interview with Lou because he is articulate as a radio-man himself and therefore able and willing to share well with others the intimacies of the greatest love affair of his life time. His personal story as a paramedic, a casino developer and today as yoga teacher and an ambassador of Lululemon, is also compelling and reflects this 60-year old man's drive to grow and live life to its utmost. For one singular decade he did so with the love of his life, the apple of his eye - Renee Roth!    in 'Having and Losing a Soulmate' you will also be privy to Lou and Renee's first date; the time Lou leaned Renee up against the fridge and said unabashedly for the first time, "I love you". You will listen to Lou's fascination with his wife's hand's which he stated were, "tiny and delicate....thoughtful, with a sense of kindness that always came through them." You'll  hear Lou and Renee's romantic love affair, complete with giggles and a whole lot of fun, a passion for adventure and predicated on trust and real, genuine love. Lou and Renee were of one soul. They had a deep and meaningful relationship, the kind most of us would want. I enjoyed watching them together. I appreciated that Lou agreed to speak to me about it and I am forever grateful for his openness and what he brings to this new podcast - Hat Radio. After doing the interview I wasn't sure if i should celebrate to its fullest what Lou and Renee had for a blip in time, or mourn what they lost - a soulmate. In the end, I did both. Enjoy my discussion with Lou and feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts on your own love affair. If you like 'Having and Losing a Soulmate' please share it with others. Thanks!

Please visit our website post about this Episode with Ginger Root. It can be found at the following address: http://bit.ly/2rrjpxl How long has it been since Richard has hosted? Almost a full month. Here at Kilson Street, a month translates to about 3-4 episodes. So we're glad to have him back. You should comment down at the bottom of this post to tell Richard how much you love him. It's been too long... Anyway, let's get into Ginger Root. Yes! These kids, and I say kids because I'm an old ass man compared to them, have got their music flowing tight. Hailing from Huntington Beach, this group is mainly lead by Cameron, who is the writer, vocals, keys, bass, drums, etc. It's tough finding a great rhythm section that has the talent that Anthony (Bass guitar) and Matt (Drums) have. Round this out with great musicianship and you have a group ready to make hits. And at their very young age, I wouldn't be surprised to see them grow into musical beasts within the next few years. This is a rare band. Seriously. Ginger Root getting some reps in before showtime! Photo by Kilson Street It's always enjoyable to mix a band that just doesn't have a whole lot of flaws, if any. I find myself loving the music after each listen. And I tend to listen to music from each episode very frequently. There always seems to be a song that stands out for each episode but with these guys, all the songs they performed on episode 89 popped out so damn much, I couldn't stop listening to them. And luckily, if you find yourself liking the hell out of their music, they got quite a few tracks up on Bandcamp and on Facebook that you cold dig up. I haven't checked other music services yet but I'm sure they won't be hard to find elsewhere. Please make sure you catch these guys at their next gigs coming up in the summer of 2017. You won't be disappointed. We would like to thank the band for their time and for playing in a hot ass garage. Their cooperation and overall kindness helped make this episode possible.

A Cup Of English
What have you never experienced?

A Cup Of English

The title question for this podcast might seem unusual. A more normal question would be, "What have you experienced?" My choice of words was inspired by a conversation that I had with a friend of mine from Bangladesh, Suman. He told me that because his country is warm and tropical, that he and his countrymen have no experience of snow. A friend of his now lives in Japan, and was able to describe to him how amazing and beautiful this white phenomenon is. Having never experienced(1) it before, it was a surprising and pleasant shock. I searched online to find out how many people, similarly, have never experienced snow. Well, I only came up with(2) a rough estimate, as nobody can be absolutely sure of the number. About 40% of the world's population has never seen snow in person. The areas that get no snow are equatorial South America and Africa, and the desert areas of the Middle East. This made me think of natural phenomena that I have never experienced. Coming from England, a green, cool country, I have never experienced a vast desert. This might seem funny to those of you who come from drier countries. And even though I have traveled fairly extensively, I have only seen the desert briefly in Arizona, and also the semi-arid La Mancha in Spain. I am not familiar with miles of sand. And how about you? Which kind of climate or phenomenon have you never experienced? Would you feel comfortable, for example, in a very green, rainy country, or is it more normal for you to see sand and sun? I wonder what it would feel like for an Eskimo who has never been around greenery to experience a tropical forest, or rolling, green hills full of sheep. It would take some time to get used to it, for sure(3). Another thing that I haven't experienced is the Aurora Borealis. I'm sure that the sky full of shifting colors would hypnotize me, and it would take a while to realize that it is real. Let me know which phenomenon you have never experienced but would like to. 1. 'Having never experienced it before,..' having + a past participle, is a great way to make a sentence interesting and different, as the main clause has to come afterwards.  a. Having gone shopping, she came back with ten bags and a big smile on her face. b. Having never scuba dived before, he was nervous but excited. c. Having studied non-stop for eight hours, he ate dinner and went straight to bed. 2. 'To come up with' is another interesting use of 'up' in English that adds to an idiomatic phrase. In this case, the phrase means to produce, discover, or to come to a conclusion. a. The investigators examined the room for hours, but only came up with one fingerprint. b. We brainstormed about how to fix the problem. It was our youngest child who came up with the solution! 3. 'For sure' is a little add-on that we often use to just confirm what we have stated. It can also be said to agree with what someone else has just stated. a. If we want to avoid the traffic, we'll have to leave early, for sure. b. "If she keeps practicing, she will be a proficient driver in a few months."   "For sure!"

As cars were banned from central Paris this weekend and the health risks of pollution hit the headlines, Mark Porter examines the statistic that pollution kills 29,000 people a year in the UK. And he visits a pioneering clinic at Southampton General Hospital where falls in the elderly are seen as a risk factor for underlying health problems; 'Having a hip fracture is like having a heart attack or stroke' explains Dr Mark Baxter. 50% of people who have a hip fracture will have previously presented with a fall, but once they go on to break a hip, 1 in 10 elderly people may not be alive at the end of the month and up to 25% by the end of the year. Many elderly people are found to be on multiple treatments - blood pressure pills or bladder pills for example - that make people fall over. In recent years there has been much more attention paid to the cumulative burden of the side effects of medicines in the elderly - particularly the group of commonly used drugs known as Anticholinergics. And according to new research by a team at the University of East Anglia, taking Anticholinergics increases the risk of falls too - particularly in men. Following news of the Meningitis B vaccine in children, an Inside Health listener got in touch to ask why it wasn't being given to teenagers in light of data showing that there is a second peak in incidence in the disease among 15 - 19 year olds? Mark talks to Professor Andrew Pollard, Chair of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. And Inside Language: Dr Margaret McCartney and Professor Carl Heneghan demystify the terminology of medicine and research. This week, false positives and false negatives; when is something not what it seems, and when does it seem what it's not?

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION A new crop of graduates are setting off on the next stage of their lives this summer. Most likely their heads are filled with dreams and visions of what their futures might look like. At least, we hope they have some dreams. How about for the rest of us? What has happened to your dreams? Have they come true? Have they been lost? In the movie The Graduate, there is a character, Mrs. Robinson, who has lost her dreams and lost interest in life and so she escapes into having sexual affairs with young men who are half her age and who she barely knows. When we stop dreaming, our hearts begin to die and our souls begin to dry out. In contrast, there are dreamers in life whose lives seem filled with passion and hope and possibility. As we congratulate our graduates on Sunday at 10 and 11:30, let us talk about having dreams and not having dreams and what that means. All graduates of all ages, high school and above, will be honored in our services.
