Episode 65: Nate Smith. One of the greatest drummers in the game, a future member of the Hall of Fame—you already know it's Nate Smith! I had a great time hanging with Nate in this conversation. He's a brilliant musician, composer, thinker, and such a fun guy. We go deep on how he got the gig with Brittany Howard and his work with her, how the Fearless Flyers became a band and how they make records, his practice regimen, personal life, philosophies, working with Paul Simon, going viral, what drives his creativity, etc. Nate is the kind of guy you like even more once you talk with him, so I hope this interview makes you feel like you know him better—and become an even bigger fan. “For me, when I hear something I see a colour.” Kaz Rodriguez is an English drummer whose hard work over the years has resulted in a lot of mega opportunities these last couple of years. He is touring with Josh Groban, performing clinics worldwide, and he writes his own music. His drumless tracks have been a huge hit in the international scene with drummers like Sput, Chris Coleman, Aaron Spears, Tony Royster, Ricky Lewis and the list goes on. His philosophy regarding the drumless music is to share it with the drumming community so that drummers can put their sound to his music. So, there is one thing I should point out in particular about Kaz that is incredibly unique. He has a condition called synesthesia. Basically, in layman's terms, he hears colours. He doesn’t read music but instead memorizes music with the colours he hears. Kaz endorses Tama, Zildjian, Remo, LP Percussion and Roland. You Will Hear About…. How Josh Groban saw Kaz on Drumeo and hired him. Kaz’s experience so far touring with Josh Groban. How Kaz came to realize that pop session gigs weren’t enough for him. Kaz’s friendship with Aaron Spears and how grateful he is for that. The importance of giving back and how Kaz’s music was meant for that. Synesthesia. The aftermath after Kaz was stabbed. Kaz’s decision to discontinue studying architecture for music. Why Should You Listen? Kaz projects so much positivity. His spirit for music and giving back to the drumming community is quite exceptional and his take on gratitude is a great reminder for every drummer out there. Getting a chance to hear his process with how he understands music is also incredibly interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1rYSLqWqoM Kaz’s Socials Instagram Facebook Twitter Website Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook

Tyler Zarzeka is a fantastic young drummer currently on the road with Kiiara. When we caught up with him on Episode 043, he had just wrapped up a tour with Noah Cyrus and was about to head out for his next run with Kiiara. Tyler started playing at age 16 taking lessons from the great Mike Johnston. He attended Musician's Institute in Los Angeles and started working for a backline company after graduating. He made some great connections in the industry and ended up touring the world as the drum tech for the incredible Aaron Spears. After 4 years on the road as a tech, Tyler decided to give playing his full attention and he has been a very busy touring pro since that time. Tyler's story is very inspirational and is sure to resonate with all who listen to this great interview.
A couple of months ago, I was trying to find a contact for for Snoop Dog. He was coming to Tampa to do a show and I wanted to catch up with him (I used to give him licenses when he first came out while I was handling Sampling licensing for MCA) and wanted to get an interview with him for the show. It didn't happen, but when I was lead to this booking agency, I spoke with a very helpful man named Louis. We got to talking, he mentioned that he knew of this great drummer/artist Lola Blu from Miami. I was immediately intrigued. I also knew what his next question was going to be. I didn't let him ask it, I said it for him "yes, I'll have her on the show, how can I reach her?" I instantly without even seeing her work that I knew I wanted her on the show. As luck would have it, she has agreed to do the show and she's here with us in today’s episode. Lola Blu is a multi-faceted artist with skills ranging from visual arts, music and fashion photography. She combines her passion for music with eccentric visual art. Her work has graced the stage with many musical sensations and currently she is in an all-female electronic duo consisting of a drummer and DJ called Blu Cartell. Lola does two of my favorite things, art and music. Not only is she a drummer, she was also a dancer starting at age 2. I feel like we’re kindred spirits. I love her spirit and energy. Lola has created beautiful works of art. She draws and paints fun, images on drum heads and drum shells. Some of the drummer clients she’s created pieces for include: Quest Love of The Roots, Aaron Spears of Usher, Brian Frasier Moore of Madonna , Adrian Young of No Doubt, Gerald Heyward of Michael Jackson and many more. I can’t wait for her to do one for me!! Today, Lola gives you a birds-eye look into how she brought her talent to light and how you should always trust your instinct and follow your bliss. Lola will be part of the Art Basel 2016 shows in Miami, so if you’re in the area, be sure to look her up.
