Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Javiera Estrada, a Los Angeles based photographer with roots in Acapulco. She currently has an exhibit running at the Jonathan Carver Moore gallery in San Francisco entitled Back to the Future: Life in Technicolor. About Artist Javier Estrada:Multi-media artist, Javiera Estrada, was born in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1981 and emigrated to the United States in 1989. Javiera's broad scope of work, which includes photography, mixed media, photograms, film, and textiles, is influenced by her memories of growing up in Acapulco—a tropical paradise of vibrant colors, steeped in spiritual ritual and magical realism.  Estrada's mystical affinity for bridging the gap between the conscious landscape of reality and the subconscious world of the spiritual can be seen throughout her work. Philosophically, Estrada rejects Cartesian dualism and its compartmentalization of the whole, embracing a worldview of interconnectivity and unity consciousness. Artistically, she seeks to unify the mundane and the sacred.  Javiera examines the theme of interconnected consciousness in a multitude of ways. From incorporating female bodies as sculptural forms in organic communion with nature, to creating galactic primordial environments with inks—fluid and formless, structures representing the “prima materia,” original essence of existence. The juxtaposition of shadow and light play a recurring role in Estrada's explorations as well, representing the internal struggle between the spiritual and the physical.  Estrada describes her artistic process as both frenzied and laborious. The work is multi-layered and time-consuming, a technique she sees as inducing presence, while moving away from the high-speed nature of the digital age. The initial messy, chaotic stage of unknowing is essential to Estrada's process, as it allows for connection with the deeper, subconscious elements wanting to emerge through the work.     Estrada has exhibited in the United States, Europe (London, Germany, China, Switzerland) and Singapore. In 2020, her solo show in Las Vegas received a Certificate of Special Congressional Commendation for the Arts from the United States Congress. Recently, she was commissioned to create a site-specific piece for the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Estrada currently lives and works in Los Angeles.Visit Javiera's Website: JavieraEstrada.comFollow Javiera on Social Media: @JavieraEstradaArtistFor more info on her exhibit Back to the Future: Life in Technocolor visit the Jonathan Carver Moore Gallery. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. Kandee Anderson has worked for Marriott since December of 1988—34 years. How many people can say that? Her accomplishments are broad and deep. She started as a Sales Manager at a Residence Inn in Southern California. She worked her way up to a GM position at that property before moving into marketing and sales as a Regional Sales Director.  Eventually, Kandee became the General Manager for several properties in Southern California. She's the GM of the Irvine Marriott, located in Orange County. She's led convention marketing strategies, won awards for customer service, received profitability recognition, and has facilitated leadership training within the company. Kandee has done it all.  In this episode of Upthinking Finance™ Kandee shares how she advanced in the industry, talks about the challenges she faced along the way, and shares her thoughts on the future of the hotel industry. Don't miss it!  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in...[3:18] What drew Kandee to the hotel industry? [5:24] Finding balance in a demanding job [7:43] How Kandee advanced in the industry [12:53] Defining moments in Marriott's history [17:41] The evolution of Marriott hotels [21:00] The challenges of the expansion process [24:15] How Covid has impacted the hotel industry  [29:16] Kandee's thoughts on the future of the industry  [31:59] What Kandee is most proud of in her career [34:23] Kandee's favorite hotel in the world The evolution of Marriott hotelsMarriott was actually a food and beverage company for 30 years. It wasn't until 1957 that J.W. Marriot purchased his first full-service “motor hotel.” It was very successful for them and they continued to diversify.  In 1987, they purchased the brand Residence Inn. It was their first acquisition. Courtyard, Fairfield Inn, and Springhill suites were all built from within to cater to every possible customer.  Their portfolio also includes full-service and luxury hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton, the Renaissance brand, and many other international brands. The first international hotel was in Acapulco Mexico in 1975. They've grown this amazing machine with different brands. What challenges has the company faced during its extensive growth? Listen to learn more! How navigating Covid changed everything J.W. Marriott founded his hotels with the sole purpose of putting people first. His motto was “If you take care of your associates, they will take care of the customers.” Because of this belief, Marriott was one of the few companies that kept benefits for all of their employees during the Covid pandemic, even if they were furloughed.  Now that the world is recovering from the impact of the pandemic, there's a lot more leisure travel. But corporate travel is in flux. Companies are looking at different ways to do meetings. So from an occupancy standpoint, the leisure side is strong. All of the business realm has room to grow.  How Kandee advanced in the industryKandee was the first female General Manager at her hotel. When she first started at Marriott, women couldn't wear pants. They were treated differently. But she's never been passed up for a promotion or been stopped because she was a woman. She's broken through many barriers because of her grit and determination.  She also had great mentors that encouraged her to keep pushing upward. She had always been fearless and confident, even as a young child. She is always the first person to raise her hand in meetings and is always part of the conversation. She wasn't afraid to raise her voice and bring her knowledge and experience to the table.  Kandee is proud to do something she loves while making a good living. She accomplished her financial goals in a way where she was happy and able to spend time with her family. She chased balance and a financially rewarding life. She did what she loved and didn't pursue things that pulled her away...

The ladies have gone from Montreal to Boston to live tweet from the Pride parade (work is tough sometimes), and have now settled into their Airbnb in Acapulco. How’d they find this place? It starts with Kiwi.com, the Flo Rida music video for Whistle and a $177 one-way flight – and ends with some killer views and regrets. Acapulco is hot AF, and the sweat situation is making it a real challenge to stay hydrated. Kari got sick almost immediately upon arrival, and a stranger broke into the apartment at 9am...just in time to see Kelly with no pants on. The ladies also have a cray cray Airbnb host to contend with, which should make this an interesting leg of the trip. Fortunately, Santiago has heard of this Acapulco business and isn’t at all impressed – he’s flying in to keep an eye on the Gringas in this strange, and allegedly dangerous, city. Before listening to this episode, check out the Medellin content (specifically, Finding Fixers in Medellin and Gringas in a Strange Land) to become acquainted with THE Santiago, who has become our ultimate fixer. Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 187. I appeared on Jeff Berwick's show in 2012: Kinsella on Anarchast Discussing IP, Anarcho-libertarianism, and Legislation vs. Private Law (Dec. 29, 2012): I was a guest on Jeff Berwick's Anarchast (ep. 51, 36 min), released today. We discussed anarchy and how such a society might be reached; the basis and origin of law and property rights and its relationship to libertarian principles, and implications for legislation versus law and the legitimacy of intellectual property; also, utilitarianism, legal positivism, scientism, and logical positivism. Description from the Anarchist site below. For more background on IP, see the C4SIF Resources page; on legislation vs. private law, see The (State's) Corruption of (Private) Law. Youtube below as well as the auto-transcript generated by Youtube: https://youtu.be/FtfP4KxBYcM Update: See also Legislation and the Discovery of Law in a Free Society.   Anarchast Ep. 51 with Stephan Kinsella   Jeff Berwick in Acapulco, Mexico, talks with Stephan Kinsella in Houston, Texas Topics include: - Stephan explains how he became an anarchist and some of the books that pointed him in the right direction including - The Fountainhead (http://amzn.to/VnZwSL) - Stephan is a practicing attorney that applies his legal knowledge with his libertarian philosophy - He believes a free law society will only come about if a majority of people agree in libertarian principles - Law is defined as a concrete body of rules that permits a group of people that want to be able to cooperate to be able to do so - Jeff asks if it is necessary for everyone to agree with libertarian philosophy in order to have a free society - Stephan thinks that a majority of people already have libertarian principles but have not been educated correctly in constancy - He is more optimistic that most because he sees more people not accepting central planning than in the past - Jeff thinks that there could be a backlash against free market ideas during a financial collapse where the people believe capitalism is to blame - Stephan hopes that people will slowly find the state to be irrelevant and this will bring about a free society - Jeff thinks that there will be a financial collapse that will make this transition unpredictable - Stephan is an expert in libertarian Intellectual Property theory - He explains the principles of property law - What most people think is law today is not what law would be based on in a libertarian society - Stephan explains the problem with legal and economic positivism - The proper libertarian view is to be opposed to making law through legislation - The problem with intellectual property is that you are able to use the force of the government against someone who has not aggressed against you - Stephan explains the problems with the utilitarian Intellectual property justification - The intellectual property system forces everyone to participate even if they don't agree with it Stephan is doing astounding work in libertarian legal theory you can find more in formation on his sites https://stephankinsella.com/ http://c4sif.org/ For more information on The Dollar Vigilante, go to http://dollarvigilante.com.
