Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: An EA's Guide to Washington DC, published by Andy Masley on April 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Note: We (Andy and Elika) are posting this on the suggestion from this Forum post calling for more public guides for navigating EA hubs. This guide is not a representation of the views of everyone in the community. If you have suggestions for this guide or general feedback, please comment or message us. If you are visiting or new to the DC area and are looking to get connected to the local EA community, this guide is a useful place to start. This guide is most helpful if you're considering moving to DC and want to get more context on the community and culture. We're not trying to convince you to move or to be fully comprehensive. DC is a great place with a vibrant EA community! We hope you enjoy it and are welcomed warmly! To encourage that, feel free to reach out to any local community organizers listed in the People section! Overview The Washington Metropolitan Area includes DC itself and other nearby cities in Virginia and Maryland. It's the sixth most populated metropolitan area in the US and contains many distinct neighborhoods. The EA scene in DC is spread across different neighborhoods and there isn't one specific cluster of EA activity. DC is one of the most active EA hubs. There are a lot of people focused on each of the major EA cause areas, especially AI, biosecurity, animal welfare, and global health. Many of the EAs who live in DC are working on policy directly or indirectly. DC EA Culture While we can't speak for the view of everyone in our community, in our opinion, the EA culture in DC is great! Everyone is friendly, very motivated to do good, and works hard. Here's a few bullet points on culture: Things are a bit more private in DC. Many in the community are less publicly affiliated with EA. There are a few reasons. The most common we've heard is that professionals are more hesitant to associate with any big ideas or belief systems that may not be popular in the places they work. There's a less intense EA culture. EA DC's members exist on a large spectrum of involvement with EA. While many members regularly use EA principles in their work and life, you're likely to find fewer “all EA all the time” people than in other large EA hubs like the Bay Area. Many EA DC members work at non-EA organizations or do cause-specific work. The community tends to be a bit older. In the 2021 EA DC community survey, 50% of members were between 21-29 and 38% were between 30-39. Many people are spread across the DC suburbs, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. There are active groups focused on particular cause areas EA DC has active cause area meetup groups for AI, animal welfare, biosecurity, global health and development, and international security and foreign policy. To join a cause area meetup group just fill out this form or reach out to EA DC at Info@EffectiveAltruismDC.org. It's generally a good EA network to know people in. EAG have been hosted here. EA DC has members working in many different areas of government and policy work and is well-connected to the broader DC political scene. The community is more formal / professional than super social. EA DC is primarily a professional community. A lot of members form friendships in the group, but the primary goal of the organizers is to spread EA thinking, help members network professionally, give members access to effective careers, and promote effective giving. In comparison to places like the Bay Area, there is less overlap between the local rationalist groups and the EA group. EA groups and organizations EA DC exists, is great, and is always looking for organizing / volunteer help. To get connected to EA DC fill out the welcome form and explore other resources here. The Four Key Lifestyle Changes To Reverse 90% of All Heart Disease with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Steven Masley

Couch Talk w/ Dr. Anna Cabeca

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2021 54:06

Dr. Steven Masley discusses the #1 killer for most people in the world that almost no one is talking about, heart disease. Learn why 90% of heart disease is completely preventable with simple lifestyle changes, how to turn up your energy and improve your sex life at the same time, common myths around heart health, and what foods you should eat to live a heart healthy life. Heart disease is the #1 killer for most people in the world today, men and women. For every 1 woman that dies from breast cancer, 6 die from heart disease. Heart disease also impacts how we live including our energy levels, how we feel, and our ability to enjoy sex. Erectile dysfunction is a major symptom of heart disease. Just managing your blood pressure and cholesterol is not dealing with the underlying issue. For women, poor circulation as they age also reduces blood flow to the vagina and pelvic region, causing all sorts of sexual health issues. The standard approach to treating heart disease is pretty disappointing. Doctors look at certain risk factors and basically wait for something bad to happen like a heart attack or stroke. They don't measure heart function or artery age. We can prevent 90% of heart disease with just pure lifestyle changes, yet we choose to spend 90% of all the money treating heart disease on end-stagee procedures and hospital care and 1% on prevention. Men and women experience heart disease symptoms differently. For men, it can manifest as the classic tightness in the chest but for women, it can feel like they are just out of breath, which often results in them being misdiagnosed. Sexual issues are also signs that there may be an issue with the heart. Masley wants people to start measuring their artery age and paying more attention to their nutrition and exercise. Simple improvements to what you eat and how much you move around can have profound effects on your heart health. Research shows that your blood sugar and blood pressure are your two most important risk factors. Blood sugar is the number one cause of heart disease. If your blood pressure is less than 120/80 without medication you are probably growing plaque at an accelerated rate. Your gut microbiome also has a major impact on your overall heart health. If your blood pressure is elevated, it's a sign that your lifestyle does not match your genetic need. To fix that, you should eat more vegetables and fruits. Five cups of fruits and vegetables a day will have a greater impact than taking cholesterol medication. You also need to exercise. A high-intensity workout is more effective than medication and it makes you feel better. Sugar and flour have a big impact on your blood pressure. Cutting those out of your diet will result in major improvements. Meditation to reduce stress hormones is another important step. Statins can be useful for some people who are very high risk, but for most people, they will reduce your testosterone, increase muscle aches, raise your blood sugar, cause brain fog and memory loss, and lower your energy levels. The goal is to reduce the usage of those medications and make them unnecessary for the majority of people. If you are on statin medications, there are other nutrients you should take to mitigate the effects it has on your body. There is a time and a place for the medication, but you shouldn't be in them for the rest your of life. Your gut is like your second brain and your gut microbiome is essential to your overall health. It impacts all the heart risk factors and leaky gut is one of the leading causes of systemic inflammation, a key risk for heart disease. If your diet is high in sugar and red meat, you're going to form bacteria that increases your risk for heart disease, clotting, and artery restriction. The gut microbiome requires diversity from our diet. If you're not eating leafy green vegetables, your body becomes more acidic and that can result in weaker bones and muscles. Our gut microbiomes are in a symbiotic relationship and those kinds of vegetables are crucial to fueling the right kinds of gut bacteria. Of the foods to add to your diet, opt for colorful fiber like vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and chocolate while avoiding grains. The next best is healthy fats and clean protein. Too many people drink sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages. Diet beverages kill the bacteria in your gut. You can't rely on willpower solely for your nutrition. You should aim to eliminate unhealthy options from your kitchen so you're not tempted. The final piece of the puzzle is probiotics and eating food like sauerkraut and miso to rebuild and reinforce your gut microbiome. Intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet are also very effective at improving your heart health and general wellbeing. Getting into ketosis isn't just necessary for women, it's mandatory. It helps manage fat and improves heart health, but it also reduces the risk factors for Alzheimer's Disease. Beans and nuts are the most powerful food source of alkalinity. It's not important when you exercise, just that you do. Your aerobic fitness has a big impact on many aspects of your health, but so does muscle mass. High-intensity workouts a couple times a week paired with proper strength training is vital. Whether you need to eat before or after a workout is up to what your body needs. Test out approaches and see what works best for you. The only important thing to note is that you should consume some form of clean protein after exercise. Food, nutrients, fitness, and stress management are the four key pillars of heart health.     Mentioned in this Episode: drmasley.com youtube.com/thegirlfrienddoctor dranna.com/show     Always seek the advice of your own physician or qualified health professional before starting any treatment or plans. Jonny Bowden, Ph.D talks about the book he did with Steven Masley, MD, "Smart Fat." After the interview with Dr. Bowden, Lisa interviews Dr Steven Masley about how not to ruin good fats and the heat points of cooking with fats and oils. Description of Good Fats: The innovative guide that reveals how eating more fat—the smart kind—is the key to health, longevity, and permanent weight loss. For years experts have told us that eating fat is bad. But by banning fat from our diets, we’ve deprived ourselves of considerable health benefits—and have actually sabotaged our own efforts to lose weight. Though they originally came from vastly different schools of thought about diet and weight loss, renowned nutritionist Jonny Bowden and well-respected physician Steven Masley independently came to the same conclusion about why so many people continually fail to shed pounds and get healthy. It all comes back to a distinction far more important than calories vs. carbs or paleo vs. plant-based: smart fat vs. dumb fat. In Smart Fat, they explain the amazing properties of healthy fat, including its ability to balance hormones for increased energy and appetite control, and its incredible anti-inflammatory benefits. The solution for slimming down—and keeping the pounds off for life—is to “smart-fat” your meals, incorporating smart fats with fiber, protein, and most importantly, flavor. Bowden and Masley identify smart fats, explain what not to eat, and provide a thirty-day meal plan and fifty recipes based on the magic formula of fat, fiber, protein, and flavor. It’s time to unlearn what we think we know about food. Getting smart about fat—and everything you eat—and learning to smart-fat your meals is the only solution you'll ever need. Title: “Myths of the Mediterranean Diet” Guest: Steven Masley Dr. Steven Masley has helped thousands of patients improve cognitive function and reverse type II diabetes and heart disease in his years as a practicing physician and with his bestselling books, including The Better Brain Solution, The 30-Day Heart Tune-Up, Ten Years Younger and Smart Fat. Main Segment  MYTH #1. YOU CAN EAT ALL THE HEALTHY FOOD YOU WANT There’s no need to put a hard limit on daily servings of vegetables (you won’t overdo it because you’ll naturally fill up on fiber), but it is possible, for instance, to overeat walnuts or almond butter, or use too much olive oil, particularly if you’re dipping pieces of bread into it. MYTH #2. EATING MEDITERRANEAN MEANS EATING PASTA, BREAD AND PIZZA You can easily overdo the portion size, even with whole grains. When you see grains and cereals on the Mediterranean diet, this doesn’t mean a giant platter of pasta, unlimited bread (even if it’s organic and whole grain), or bowls of rice (even if it’s brown rice). It’s important to control your portions of grains and cereals, and as you’ll see, of all the foods listed in the Mediterranean diet, whole grains provide the least benefit. MYTH #3. EATING SEAFOOD ON OCCASION WILL BENEFIT YOUR HEART Eating fish merely a few times a month won’t yield the disease-fighting benefits of the Mediterranean diet, particularly for the heart and brain. Aim for seafood at least twice a week—preferably three to five times per week. MYTH #4. ALL CHEESES (AND YOGURTS) ARE CREATED EQUAL Treating pasteurized cheese as a go-to food—compared, for example, with raw, probiotic-rich and vitamin K2-loaded camembert—is a mistake. The same goes for yogurt. Many of my patients are shocked when I explain that fruit-flavored yogurt has more sugar than ice cream. As with so many components of the Mediterranean diet, when choosing your foods, simple is best. MYTH #5. YOU CAN SKIP THE BEANS Don’t miss out on this fiber-packed superfood that is one of the best foods for controlling blood sugar, and it’s the #1 all-time top food for blocking disease-causing oxidation. In Mediterranean cuisine, beans can become the healthy foundation for countless meals. MYTH #6. TAKE SHORTCUTS WITH PROCESSED FOODS Refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats such as trans fats, and risky preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and other chemical additives that can damage your health are impossible to avoid if you eat processed foods—and some people do so because they’re rushed at mealtime. But buying the additive-packed “instant” version or choosing fast food as a shortcut is a bad bet in the long run. MYTH #7. YOU CAN DRINK WINE LIKE WATER Red wine only provides health benefits if it is consumed in moderation. Enjoy a glass or two with dinner, but quench your thirst with water. MYTH #8. YOU CAN USE EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL FOR ALL YOUR COOKING NEEDS Don’t use extra-virgin olive oil for high-heat cooking, or even medium-high heat. Once it reaches 400ºF—its smoke point, the maximum temperature it can reach before it breaks down and becomes a damaged fat—extra-virgin olive oil starts losing nutritional value, not to mention its complex and delicate flavors. Save flavorful extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling over foods and making dressings, and use virgin olive oil and a handful of others (such as avocado and/or almond oil) for medium-high cooking. MYTH #9. ITALIAN FOOD PROVIDES ALL THE BENEFITS OF A MEDITERRANEAN DIET Don’t limit yourself to the “safe” and familiar flavors of Mediterranean cuisine from Western Europe. Remember the influences from North Africa, Turkey, Israel, and other Middle Eastern regions, where you’ll find spices such as inflammation-fighting turmeric and gut-healthy fermented foods like kefir (which originated in Russia). If you remain open to new flavors and ingredients with proven health benefits, you’re not only broadening your palate and enjoying new foods, you’re increasing your chances of preventing chronic disease and living a longer, happier life.     “Executive Medicine Moment” Executive Medicine of Texas is all about helping you live longer, healthier lives. Food is fundamental to health—it is the primary thing that makes us sick or well. And that’s also true for our brain! Yes, that’s right, food heals—the body and the mind! Today’s guest totally gets that. While most doctors simply don’t care about nutrition, Dr. Masley is one of the rare MD’s to take it seriously. Right from the start, he knew that if he wanted to make a real difference to his patients’ lives, he needed to do more than simply tell them how many grams of fat or fiber to eat: he had to share recipes that are delicious, easy to prepare, and that nourish the heart, brain and soul. He’s our kind of M.D.! Dr. Masley is a physician, nutritionist, chef and creator of the number 1 health program 30 Days to a Younger Heart. He’s also authored the books 10 Years Younger, 30 Day Heart Tune-Up, and The Better Brain Solution. His goal is to help people improve their brain health, reduce cognitive decline, and feel better than ever. Having witnessed the devastating impact of memory loss on his family, Dr. Masley is on a mission to stop it from affecting more people. His latest book, The Better Brain Solution, shares lifestyle strategies that are proven to make your brain younger, sharper, quicker and more productive. Here are some of Dr. Masley’s brain-boosting tips: FOOD Make sure you add these foods to your diet: Plant pigments: Colorful fruits and vegetables (like blueberries, leafy greens, beetroot, etc.), cacao, matcha green tea, organic coffee (in moderation – 2 cups a day), and red wine (also in moderation!). Smart fats: If you’re on a low-fat diet, stop! Your brain is made up of 60% fat, so you need smart fats to keep it functioning at its best. Good sources include nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados. Also take an omega 3 DHA supplement. Herbs and spices: These are packed with anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants which fight free radicals and keep your brain young. The best combinations are Italian herbs (like rosemary, basil, oregano, etc.) and curry spices (like turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, etc.). Probiotics: Your gut is your second brain. Most of the neurotransmitters needed for proper cognitive function are made in your digestive system, so keep it healthy by including gut-friendly foods like miso, sauerkraut, and kombucha. Avoid the following foods: Refined carbohydrates (sugar, flour): These carbs hike up your blood sugar and are the number one cause of memory loss! Nitrosamines: These are preservatives used in processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, sausages, etc. They are neurotoxic, and increase your risk of cancer and diabetes. Tuna and large fish: They’re high in mercury, which is toxic to our brains! FITNESS Physical exercise: Both aerobic exercise and strength training are essential to keep your brain young. Mental exercise: Never stop learning! Gaining new skills, taking classes and feeding your brain with knowledge creates more neural connections and improves your brain speed. STRESS Stress actually shrinks your brain! When you’re stressed, your cortisol levels go up, and this raises your blood sugar which increases your risk of artery plaque and heart disease. Take some time out every day to meditate, make sure you get proper sleep, and do something that makes you feel good. Romance and sex are good for both your heart and your brain! Doing all of these things not only boosts your brain but also even prevents Alzheimer’s disease – the sixth leading cause of death in the United States  If you want to improve your cognitive health, there’s no better place to start than Dr. Masley’s brain quiz. It only takes 90 seconds, and you’ll get his Better Brain Solution Shopping List! Don’t wait until you have symptoms: take action today to protect your brain, prevent Alzheimer’s and keep it fit and healthy for years to come.   Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU! He had a procedure; and had a massive stroke. I learned what dementia was. It wasn't necessary, he didn't need it. I feel badly to this day that I didn't do more for him earlier on. He said, 'don't let this happen to others'. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness is calming on my emotions. It feels like love and stability in my life when I'm more mindful. When I'm not, I tend to be more anxious and depressed. I'd much rather feel loved and focused than anxious and depressed. That's a lack of mindfulness, is anxiety. Thoughts on Breathing I like taking a deep breath and filling myself with spirit. I even like to, after I stretch and workout in the morning, I like to take a deep breath. I feel like green energy pours into my body when I'm taking a deep breath. When I blow out, I'm just blowing out tension. I use my breath to help me in a kind of meditative, processing way of being more calm and focused. Breath to me is like breathing in spirit. I got beaten up. I got kicked around. It was not pleasant. I can completely sympathize with anyone who has been bullied before. Part of it was just being susceptible. I wasn't being mindful, I wasn't being confident. It wasn't moving with purpose. Preditors picked on me. Do I know what it's like to be bullied? Sadly, yes. I think we've got to stop this. I think the food industry is bullying the American population today, making money off of them and killing them. I think we've got to stand up to that kind of bullying and be mindful and make right choices and not let that happen. Certainly, it's happening to our children. I would say the whole food industry is bullying our kids today too. When I think about it in the context of what it was like to be beaten up as a kid, and now realize what we're doing to other children today, that really gets me going. I think it's time for us to stand up and put a stop to bullying. It's also time to stand up and be mindful about our food choices and not let people feed our kids, junk. And us too. We have to be responsible for ourselves too, and stop eating sugary junk and food with toxins. We have to demand a clean world to live in so we can thrive and feel fantastic and be more productive.

We talk a lot about health in terms of medicine and healthcare and technology. But we've also pointed out, repeatedly, that there's a lot more to it than that. The question is, “what is real wellness and what is real health?” That's something Jennifer Masley is very interested in. Jennifer is a health entrepreneur who builds communities, bringing people together through food. She works to create places where people are supported, so they have someone to fall back on when things get rough and avoid a lot of the health and wellness problems that come from that. It was a lot of fun talking to Jennifer and having a chance to think about health in a different context. I love how her comments, and her work, end up coming back to pretty much every aspect of health and wellness - mental, physical, and more. Mind, body and spirit, as she said.

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we kick off our upcoming Functional Forum: Evolution of Cardiology with Dr. Steven Masley as we revisit his interview from the Evolution of Medicine Summit: Healthcare from Scratch. Cardiology used to be the study of the heart - but in the last couple decade it's been more about the study of cardiac procedures. Not all of these procedures have long term benefits and most just treat the symptoms and do not prevent future events. Dr. Masley looks at this from a preventative and lifestyle medicine perspective and works to educate both patients and practitioners on what they can do to avoid seeing a cardiologist altogether.  On the podcast you will hear: Emerging best practices for preventing heart disease How to predict if you can live to 100 without disease How technology can massively reduce our costs Click here to join us for the Evolution of Cardiology on March 6!
