This week, 49 white Afrikaans-speaking South Africans were officially welcomed to the U.S., fast-tracked under so-called "refugee status" promoted by US President, Donald Trump—despite the UN not recognizing them as needing asylum. Critics say this is based on a false narrative of persecution, privileging white migrants while thousands of legitimate asylum seekers are denied entry. The contrast is stark: just days earlier, Trump asked the Supreme Court to revoke protections for half a million immigrants already in the U.S.Lester Kiewit speaks to Bill Frelick, head of the Refugee and Migrant Programme at Human Rights Watch. As the Afrikaans language turns 100 today amid great turbulence in Afrikaner politics, Leon Louw, CEO of the Freedom Foundation, expresses doubt that any real Expropriation Without Compensation (EWC) will ever happen in South Africa against white commercial Afrikaans farmers. “I think that probably nothing will come of it. I would bet on it that there will be little or zero Expropriation Without Compensation of a true asset, commercial investment; maybe some abandoned land, maybe some derelict land somewhere that might be some sort of token. They will try a few and they will be so tied up in the Constitutional Court for years and years and years, that'll be the end of it.” He points out that Expropriation Without Compensation of black-owned properties “takes place constantly all the time and has done for a long time”. “It's black people… who don't have land title…” and can't afford to fight it in court. Louw, who is currently working on new research with statisticians, also urges people to get the “actual” statistics on the "real" distribution of wealth and income and land in South Africa. “And it's looking much different from what the popular rhetoric is.” Meanwhile, he advises Afrikaners what to be working and lobbying for that will make black South Africans “become their best friends”.

Afrikaans, one of South Africa's 12 official languages, turns 100 years old today. It was officially recognised as a language distinct from Dutch in 1925. With roots stretching across continents and cultures, the language has long been at the centre of South Africa's cultural, political and educational landscape. But its future continues to stir debate, particularly in light of recent changes to the language policy in schools. Sisipho Ngcumbe filed this report.

Eighty-three (83%) of Economic Freedom Front (EFF) voters feel that the Kill the Boer song “land somewhere between irresponsible and hate speech”. That is according to a recent Social Research Foundation (SRF) survey on public perceptions around hate speech, free speech, - and that controversial song. In this interview with BizNews, the SRF's Research Director Gabriel Makin says of that 83%, 57% of EFF supporters say that the song is clearly hate speech as it calls for direct physical harm specifically against white Afrikaans farmers who are being murdered in disproportionate numbers - and as such believe it should be banned. “So that's a majority of the support base of the political leader who's driving the kind of narrative around Kill the Boer saying that actually the song that he's singing is hate speech and that he the song itself should be banned and he should be barred from singing it.” Similarly to EFF voters, former President Jacob Zuma's MK supporters also express opposition to the song Kill the Boer. “They think it is irresponsible to sing or they think generally it should be banned.” Commenting on these significant findings, Makin says: “…one of the trends…that emerges from our data is that the bulk of South Africa is moderate, it's staid, it's pragmatic. It's not the kind of racially obsessed, radical, radical populist population that some of our political leaders wish it were.”

North Korea was an important player in the decolonisation of Africa. Freedom fighters across the continent received vital assistance from Pyongyang, and almost all southern African independence leaders travelled to the North Korean capital at some point, in search of support. This alliance has continued into the twenty-first century, with African postcolonial governments throwing a lifeline to Pyongyang's increasingly isolated economy by hiring North Korean companies, despite United Nations sanctions. In Comrades Beyond the Cold War: North Korea and the Liberation of Southern Africa (Hurst, 2025), Dr Tycho van der Hoog examines the relations between victorious southern African liberation movements and North Korea, from the 1960s to the present. He explains why African presidents sang and danced at parties in Pyongyang, and why North Korean books were translated into Swahili and Afrikaans. He reveals how African soldiers were trained in guerrilla warfare by North Korean instructors, and how North Korean labourers construct monuments in Africa in the shape of AK-47s. And he explores the question of how revolutionary regimes, motivated by a need for survival, work together to defy the global order. Based on extensive research across four continents—including recently disclosed African liberation archives and Korean diplomatic cables—this innovative study is the first book on African–North Korean relations. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
