And if I feel safe, it means that I am not endangering anyone else.We human beings, we are the problem. We are the ones who are putting a barrier on everything. We don't want to recognize that our human brain or mind is capable of doing something that we cannot put on paper. We cannot buy, like you buy some expensive insurances. It's combination of faith in the invisible, faith in myself as well. But, I guess, God, maybe also part of the answer. I prefer to speak about my worst accident because it was in 1982. I fell from 20 meters - 20 meters free fall, hands first. Head first, actually, but what touched the bottom of the cliff was my hands. So both hands, they completely exploded, tearing apart my skin, my flesh. I pretty much lost 45% of my blood. Both elbows also exploded because my forearms worked as a kind of shock breaker. At the bottom of the cliff, it was a slab of limestone. So, it can't get any harder than that. It's rock. And, fortunately, I bounced back and continued my fall. But it was a steep slope. So I got another 20, 30 meters. And I guess that all of that absorbed a lot of energy. It's a bit like if you compare somebody with a being in a car accident. If you're bumping onto a tree, usually you are dead because you are speeding and suddenly something is really stopping you. Nothing is bouncing back, so this is why it kills you. And the fact that my body did manage to bounce back on the limestone and then roll again on a steep slope most probably saved me. I was in a coma, but my coma was just one week. And then somehow I woke up. Deep down I have no idea why I am still alive because normally you are not supposed to stay alive after such a fall, but obviously, I did. And doctors, they said that I was never going to be able to climb back, and actually I made them lie because I came back. It took me two years to be even better than I was before my accident. And although I was 66 percent disabled, I did manage to come back and become even much, much better than I had ever been before. I climbed in 1991 the hardest free solo route in the world. So that was something completely unthinkable because with such a broken body that also doesn't really make sense.”www.alainrobert.comwww.instagram.com/alainrobertofficial/?hl=frwww.blacksmithbooks.com/books/with-bare-hands-the-true-story-of-alain-robert-the-real-life-spiderman/www.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgInstagram @creativeprocesspodcastImage courtesy of alainrobert.com

"First of all, yes, I need to know what I will be climbing, whether it's on rocks or whether it's on buildings. And then there is physical preparation. And regarding the mindset, it's more something that became a bit automatic over the years because I have been free soloing for almost 50 years. So it is pretty much my whole life. So that means that for me, being mentally ready, it's kind of simple. It's almost always the same mental process, meaning, I can be afraid before an ascent, but I know myself actually very well. And I know that once I am starting to climb, I feel fine. I put my fear aside, and I'm just climbing. Most people don't know that actually, my background is on rock. It's not on buildings. What I did on rocks free soloing is much more impressive than what I did on buildings.”Alain Robert is a renowned rock climber and urban climber. "When I was like seven or eight, I saw a movie inspired by a novel written by Henri Troyat, The Grieving Snow. It's a story of a plane coming from India that crashed near Montblanc, one of the highest mountains in Europe. And then two brothers who are guides and very good mountaineering climbers, they decide to undertake the ascent of the mountain to seek survivors inside the plane. And I just didn't know anything. I was young. I didn't even know that there were mountains, and I got really inspired by that. And I just told to myself that I want to become a climber. You have to understand something. When I was young, I was afraid of everything. I was lacking self-confidence and just wanted to be like my heroes Zorro, Robin Hood, or D'Artagnan, and I had to find a way. I had to work on it. And actually, this is what I did. This is the story of my life. I've never been really attracted by sports. Actually, I don't even like sports, although I became a climber. He has soloed numerous routes in the 8a – 8b range, most famously La Nuit du Lézards in Buoux in 1991 which stunned the climbing world. In the years since he has taken his skills and nerve to skyscraping heights by soloing many of the world's tallest buildings. This lawbreaking pursuit has earned him great fame as well as his nickname, the French Spiderman.

Yes, the Human Spider -French man Alain Robert came to Town to complete his mission to reach the summit of the Petronas Twin Towers, after 2 unsuccessful 2 attempts - 1997 & 2007. The Petronas Twin Towers upon completion in 1996 was awarded the Tallest Tower in the World then, overtaking the Sears Tower in Chicago with the height of the spires also taken into consideration. Nevertheless that was a big surprise win for Malaysia as the initial plan was not to aspire to take the position as the tallest tower in the World ! The Twin Towers, belong to our National :Petroleum Company comprises of 2 identical Twin Towers were built by 2 different companies- Tower 1- Japanese Hazama Corporation- Tower 2 - Samsung C& T. Each tower is 88 stories high, connected in the middle at level 41&42 by the skybridge which was installed by Samsung. Designed by the late Cesar Pelli - and Argentine-American architect, it reflects the Islamic Geometric Design of the 8 pointed star. Alain Robert is the world's leading free climber and is known all over the world as the “French Spiderman” for free climbing skyscrapers. He has climbed 163 buildings in 70 different countries. He has a documentary on Amazon Prime titled My Next Challenge and is the author of a book With Bare Hands: The True Story of Alain Robert, the Real-Life Spiderman.   Some interesting insights from this episode: His insecurity as a child was the early motivation to try something to build confidence and to stand out. He didn't start climbing because he wasn't afraid of heights. He climbed in spite of his fear of heights.  Alain used to do free solo rock climbing and was considered by many to be the best in the world. As climbing gained in popularity, he lost interest. “Climbing wasn't about racing or competing but about freedom and self-expression.” Most people aren't really enjoying their lives. They do what they need to do to make a living but are bored with their work and just live for the weekends.  They are wasting most of their lives away. “It takes a certain amount of energy to climb a building. If you have the energy, you'll make it to the top.  If you don't, you'll die.” “What scares me the most is a boring life.” “Most people are dreaming their life but I was on the other side living my dream.”

There are moments in life where you realize, that the universe is on your side. Meeting Alain Robert, the French Spiderman, was so improbable that it must have been woven by the goddess of fate. He had just been released from prison in Manila, and I had somehow just arrived to Manila! I had just left Bali where I had been living for months, and arrived in Manila. I was completely disoriented, as I had been living in a jungle paradise to arrive in a super charged metropolis with over 26 million people and a current of electricity and chaos that I had forgotten about in my months living only with large blue geckos. The first night I was in Manila, the family who was living outside my window in a homemade apt that seemed to be made using only sheets of metal, duct tape, and sheer determination decided to slaughter a very large and very vocal pig. I was awoken by sounds of screaming so startling I thought I was still in a nightmare. Suffice it to say, I won't be eating piggies again ever. Have you ever heard a pig die? ITS FUCKING TERRIBLE. Don't eat them, they have many many feelings and are very very smart. Anyway the next day I was working at the bar of my hotel, drinking a glass of overpriced white wine when the most curious man walked through the door. This man, was wearing, the coolest outfit I have ever seen. It was almost completely snakeskin, his belt, cowboy boots, pants and vest ALL SNAKE in different colors, one of which was a metallic silver. He rocked up to the restaurant with a huge entourage and they started bringing him bottles of Moet and I thought to myself, yep, this guy and I are destined to be fast friends. So I somehow tricked him into letting me bring out my microphones and while we eat pasta dripping in cream and mushrooms and fresh French bread he let me interrogate him about who he was and why of all the bars in Makati, he had wandered into mine. Who he is, is possibly the most inspiring man I have met. A man whose story brought me to tears and refilled my trampled heart with a kind of hope I forgot existed. I love you Alain. On the pod today I have Dutch academic, author, and fear expert Roanne Van Voorst. In late 2017, Roanne published a book called Fear: Extreme athletes on how to reach your highest goals and overcome stress and self-doubt.   Roanne's book dissects all things fear from how pervasive it is in our daily lives to practical tips to overcome it. Through the lens of names like Lynn Hill, Steph Davis, Cedric Dumont, Alain Robert and Alex Honnold among many others, Roanne's mission is to get to the bottom of what makes these seemingly fearless athletes and coaches tick. Spoiler alert, it's not what you might think.    And as a gentle reminder, getting a handle on fear is so important guys. It truly is where the gates to the kingdom either remain locked or are pried open with a whole lot of practice.    Before I get into my convo with Roanne, I wanted to mention an upcoming event.    A few episodes ago, I introduced you to Tyler Tringas, if you remember he is a successful serial entrepreneur who's latest project is the venture fund Earnest Capital, which helps bootstrappers like you and me raise early stage funding for their businesses.   Well, the person who introduced me to Tyler is a mutual friend of ours and part of this podcast community — Eric Shutt, Founder of the brand marketing consultancy, SummitX. This March, I'm partnering with Eric on a 4 day ski retreat for leaders in business and tech in Jackson Hole, WY.    I'll be doing a live podcast recording, we'll be skiing a bunch of days at Jackson, and hearing from some of the brightest thought leaders in leadership development - all scheduled around a little Aprés of course.    If you or anyone you know is interested, feel free to use the referral code APP for $500 off the registration. Fear is something that we all feel, especially as entrepreneurs, as we are taking calculated risks every day. In this episode, Rob interviews urban climber Alain Robert aka ‘The Human Spider' from his home in Bali. Alain talks about his passion for climbing, how he overcame a fear of heights as a child and how he's managed to monetize and live off what he enjoys doing. If you want to learn how to conquer your own fear of taking risks, this is the episode for you. Can you live your life as if your climbing a building without a safety rope? KEY TAKEAWAYS How do you deal with fear and conquer that fear? Fear is never that complicated. I started to climb because it's my dream. I watched a film when I was a child, in the film a plane crashed and some people were climbing a mountain to rescue the passengers. That really inspired me. When I was 11 I started to climb. Each climb I am trying to realise a dream. I was afraid of heights as a kid so I climbed to overcome that fear which essentially is a fear of dying. Deep down your brain knows the consequences of falling. Why did you choose climbing? I enjoy it. Finding the resources in myself. I enjoy taking a calculated risk, pushing the envelope and I'm good at it. I enjoy it because it keeps me alive. Some people don't need to be close to the limit of life but I do, I need to be close to my limit. Is there a paradox in what you do? Yeah, of course, the closer I am to my limit, the more satisfaction I get. You need to find your own path. To take any kind risks you need to have some motivation, something that inspires you. I got inspired by some people climbing the mountain in that film everyone needs their equivalent. How is your climbing different to other types of climbing? I'm not interested in the sport. I'm interested in something that is difficult, and that is deadly. If I was climbing with a rope, it would be a sport and I wouldn't be interested in that. It's more like a way of life. I need to feel that I am touching with the tip of finger, death. This makes me enjoy life even more. How do you prepare for a climb? By doing normal training but the most important aspect is willpower. I'm 56 now so I don't need to train as much, maybe an hour a day. I go on my climbing wall which is a roof, and I invent some difficulties. I currently am choosing easier targets than in the past because it's harder than when I was 35. Is there is a battle with your ego as you get older? I need to carefully choose my goals. I study the building first and don't climb it if it isn't right. Then I train specifically for that climb. I guess I was more stubborn when I was younger. The most amazing challenge I did when I was 30, free solo rock climbing. I can tell at one glimpse whether a building is going to good for a climb. I do it at night, trying to climb a few metres up and down; testing. I have to find solutions. Sometimes the structure changes which can be difficult. There is plenty of factors that can make it challenging. How have you made this passion into a career? I started to get sponsored and make a living as a professional climber. Then I got more and more demands for climbing. It became a way of having fun and making money. Throughout my life, I have been faithful to my path. I only started to get enough sponsorship to make a living when I started to climb buildings. I was 18 when I got my first sponsorship but I was around 28 when I was able to make a living out of it. Before then I worked in a sports shop but my boss was paying me a full-time salary even though I only worked 18 hours a week. How does the sponsorship work for you? When I climb I can get huge coverage. For my last ascent in London, the coverage was amazing, we talking about nearly a billion people saw it on TV. I just wear the brand on my clothes, quote the brands in interviews if possible. They are able to use the pictures and the video from the climb. How do you deal with challenges of the law of what you do? More people like it than don't like it. Even the police, were excited in what I was doing. I enjoy the possibility of getting caught. I am kind of a gentle criminal. I've never thought that this is something that I didn't want to do for whatever reason. I'm still in good shape and will carry on. Worst Advice I have ever seen? Not to be daring enough to realise your dreams. Having a boring life is boring. What doe the word disruptive? What am I doing I am disrupting people? What scares you? Boredom BEST MOMENTS ‘I am trying each time to realise a dream.' ‘Yeah of course, the closer I am to my limit the more satisfaction I get.' ‘You need to find your own path' ‘I need to feel that I am touching with the tip of finger, death.' ‘Everything has to do with willpower.' ‘I enjoy it because it keeps me alive.' ‘Throughout my life, I have been faithful to my path.‘ ‘If this is your path, you better carry on.' ‘Nearly, a billion people saw me climb on TV.' ‘I started to climb because of a dream' ‘Having a boring life is boring.'   ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is the author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor and property educator.
