An incredible 43% of Americans are unpaid caregivers, who are often alone with the burden and blessing of caring for their loved ones as life begins and in the complex and heartbreaking final days. Studies show their mental health is suffering – 52% of “sandwich generation” caregivers report that they have actively thought about suicide in the last 30 days. Alexandra Drane, serial entrepreneur and co-founder of ARCHANGELS, discusses her unconventional experience working as a cashier at Walmart and its importance in informing her approach to business and life: solving complex problems by starting with the community and addressing real-life issues. Alexandra delves into “the unmentionables” of healthcare: the idea that when life goes wrong, health goes wrong. She emphasizes the importance of small acts of care and attention as the foundation for meaningful change in healthcare and society. Key Highlights: How working as a cashier at Walmart gave Alexandra a new lens for seeing the strength of the people who make up a community. How to help change a healthcare system that isn't set up to treat patients or healthcare providers as whole humans. The power of focusing on the details of life to create meaning. About our guest: Alexandra is co-founder and CEO of ARCHANGELS. She co-founded Eliza Corporation (acquired by HMS Holdings Corp: HMSY), Engage with Grace, and three other companies (all boot-strapped). A serial entrepreneur, she is also a cashier-on-leave for Walmart. She believes communities are the frontline of health, that caregivers are our country's greatest asset, and that we need to expand the definition of health to include life. Alexandra is an inventor on numerous patents and has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, including publications with the CDC, the Journal of Affective Disorders, and NEJM Catalyst. She joined Prudential Financial as a Wellness Expert for a film series called “The State of US” that was turned into a national ad campaign and generated close to two billion impressions. She has one hobby outside of her passion for revolutionizing health care, and her love of family and adventure…car racing. Key Moments: 11 minutes: On tapping into the expertise of patients. “Patients, humans who are in these situations where the traditional healthcare system is not offering a solution, they become genius inventors. And you can look condition by condition, whether it be childhood diabetes to life-threatening allergies to every type of cancer. There will be someone who has, in their basement, in their church, in their YMCA, rigged something together that is solving a previously misunderstood problem. And they figured it out. There is genius everywhere.” 25 minutes: On the challenge of the current structure of the healthcare system. “You had said something earlier about how sometimes we're dismissed. And I was thinking, as you were talking, about just how difficult it is to be a patient, to be a human in the system, when the system's not equipped to really think about you as a human.” 40 minutes: On the power of intention. “I think the healthcare system, which let's be clear, the healthcare system is nothing other than the fabric of society. The healthcare system is our lives. How we care for each other and get cared for ourselves is not a system, it is humanity. And I think we need to go back to what matters, who are we, how do we show up for each other? How do we lead with love? And guess what? When you do that, you can be sustainable and scalable.” Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Unpaid caregiving can often feel like a thankless job. This week's guest, Alexandra Drane, is here to change that with her organization ARCHANGELS.
S1E33: On this episode, Creating a Caring Economy with Alexandra Drane, CEO and Co-Founder of Archangels and host Dr. Nick. Our population is shifting older as we live longer, birth rates decline, and people have fewer children and wait longer before having children. This means there are fewer people available to be the village that we all need supporting our place in the community. This is all taking place against the backdrop of increasing stress and burnout at work, something especially acute for frontline staff that included healthcare workers and first responders. We all have the capacity to contribute – it's just different for different people. We need to accept those differences and accept everyone for their part and contributions to our global village. Your better pill to swallow is to find your way to being uncomfortable in your work, in your home in your life. Be vulnerable, transparent, and authentic with everyone you interact with. Building the village community, you want to be part of, starts with you. To stream our Station live 24/7 visit www.HealthcareNOWRadio.com or ask your Smart Device to “….Play Healthcare NOW Radio”. “Being an unpaid caregiver is the epicenter of Life Sucks Disease,” says Alexandra Drane, Co-Founder & CEO of ARCHANGELS, “but it's also one of the most glorious, one of the most magnificent jobs we'll ever have.” So, what's the trick to managing the “sucky” side of caregiving? Data. Alex's company ARCHANGELS has invented the Caregiver Intensity Index, which she describes as a “two-and-a-half minute Cosmo quiz” that helps caregivers quantify the intensity of their caregiving experience and identify the top two things driving that intensity and the top two things alleviating it. The score coming out of this helps caregivers validate the intensity of their experience, offers a framework for communicating about it, and, as Alex puts it, delivers “data that gives them permission to believe” that the stress they are feeling is real. ARCHANGELS then uses the info to crosswalk caregivers to existing resources that can help them manage those intensity-driving challenges – whether they be related to financial stress, workplace stress, relationship stress or otherwise. Knowing that health plans and employers are starting to “see the light” when it comes to caregiving and its impact on their workforce, Alex and I talk about just how much payers are really willing to contribute to supporting the resources needed to support caregivers and how the data ARCHANGELS is providing is helping demonstrate need and connection to health and well-being. Lots of interesting data points on caregiving in this one – particularly when it comes to mental health and how things have changed through the pandemic. “80% of providers believe that the unpaid caregiver should have a seat at table, but only 20% believe they actually do.” Suzanne Delbanco speaks with Alexandra Drane, Co-Founder & CEO of ARCHANGELS, diving into the critical role of caregivers and why they must be part of the clinical care team. She also discusses how ARCHANGELS' Caregiver Intensity Index (CII) is designed to engage caregivers and help them see themselves in the role. It also calculates the level of “intensity” when measuring the impact of caregiver duties on caregiver health – the higher the intensity, the more likely caregivers are experiencing an adverse mental health impact. CII looks at the influence of multiple compounding impacts on caregiver health (cohorts include age, race, unpaid, essential worker, etc.). Lastly, Alexandra explains the role that ARCHANGELS plays in helping caregivers understand and assess their intensity, and connects people to existing resources (e.g., EAP programs and community, state, and local resources, etc.) to support them.

She is a board member or advisor for many organizations including RAND Health, Open Notes, and Harvard Medical School's Executive Council of the Division of Sleep Medicine.Key Insights:For Alexandra, community is the front line of health. She believes that healthcare should be driven by love and compassion, and that we are all more alike as humans than we are different.Humanity in Healthcare. Alexandra shares a personal anecdote about how healthcare is sometimes rigid and callous to the very patients it's supposed to serve. Healthcare should be guided by kindness, support, and most importantly, love. (12:49)Don't Get Comfortable. Making assumptions is risky. Especially with COVID-19, much of healthcare is in uncharted territory. If you feel confident that you have all the right answers, be afraid because that bubble might pop. (19:57)Life on the Edge. Part of being an entrepreneur is experiencing the constant whiplash between success and failure. There will always be ups and downs, so make sure to have a support system for the downs. At the same time, not everyone needs to be an entrepreneur, and that's okay. (24:46)This episode is hosted by Marcus Osborne. There are more than 35 million unpaid caregivers who provide unpaid services to an adult age 50 or older in the US. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute, the economic value of unpaid caregiving exceeds $470B. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, Family caregivers spend an average of 24.4 hours per week providing care and nearly 1 in 4 caregivers spends 41 hours or more per week providing care. And 24% of caregivers provide care for more than 5 years. These numbers are astonishing. The caregiver is the unsung hero who often suffers physically, emotionally and financially while putting others first. Today we are going to hear from my good friend, Alexandra Drane who is the co-founder and CEO of Archangel. Alex will tell us about the impact of caregiving on the caregiver and what she and others at Archangel are doing about it. Show notes: Book Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga by Hunter S. Thompson
Nearly half of U.S. adults work as unpaid caregivers, but the essential contribution they make is undervalued, and even often unacknowledged, by employers and healthcare professionals. Alexandra Drane could not abide this, so she co-founded ARCHANGELS, an organization dedicated to supporting and honoring the unpaid caregivers among us. As she tells host Dr. Rishi Desai in this episode of Raise the Line: “I myself have been a caregiver, am a caregiver, have needed a caregiver, and will most certainly be a caregiver multiple times over again.” Against the backdrop of a pandemic that has injected unprecedented stress and instability into the lives of millions of people in the U.S., Drane wants the swelling ranks of unpaid caregivers to understand they are not alone, and that help is available. Tune in to learn why society sees childcare in a different light than elder care, what some states are doing to help unpaid caregivers, and what Drane tells the pregnant strangers she approaches on the street.
