Another Take: Why hasn't Pakistan recovered from its catastrophic floods?

Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on February 22, 2023. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Pakistan is still reeling from 2022’s deadly floods, which put a third of the country underwater. Though the country has barely contributed to climate change, its people are still paying the price. Six months on from the worst of the devastation, people across the country are still displaced and they’re facing knock-on effects of the floods on their health. The international community pledged $9 billion to aid Pakistan in rebuilding at the beginning of this year, but experts on the ground say it will be of little use if it doesn’t arrive soon. So is the international community doing enough to help? In this episode: Zuha Siddiqui (@SiddiquiZuha), Journalist Taimur Khan Jhagra (@Jhagra), Former Health & Finance Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ed Taylor, Emergency Response Coordinator, Doctors Without Borders Episode credits: This episode was updated by Tamara Khandaker. Here are some highlights from the first half of the broadcast: --As Dalton was getting started with the program, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin were about to meet, with the talks being held at the heavily guarded Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. --On Thursday, Vladimir Putin praised the Trump administration's energetic and sincere efforts to end the war in Ukraine, even suggesting that a nuclear arms control agreement could emerge from broader peace talks. --An Al Jazeera journalist who was killed by an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip was in fact the leader of a Hamas terrorist cell. --Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that cease-fire efforts in Gaza are now focused on a comprehensive deal that would release the remaining hostages all at once rather than in phases. --Israel is engaged in discussions with five nations: Indonesia, Somaliland, Uganda, South Sudan and Libya over the potential voluntary resettlement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. --President Trump has said he was able to call Aleksandr Lukashenko, president of Belarus, about the release of 16 prisoners, as well as the potential release of an additional 1,300 prisoners being held in that nation. --Australia will recognize a Palestinian state in September. --Israeli Defense Forces discovered documents in Gaza that show the overlap between UNRWA and Hamas relative to the October 2023 atrocities.

Today's Headlines: The Supreme Court is taking up a case that could overturn its 2015 Obergefell decision legalizing same-sex marriage — courtesy of Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk jailed for refusing gay marriage licenses. She's appealing a $360K judgment, claiming First Amendment protection and arguing marriage equality was wrongly decided. Meanwhile, the White House plans to audit the Smithsonian to make sure exhibits fit Trump's “unifying” version of American history — which critics say means erasing inconvenient facts. Harvard is reportedly near a $500M settlement with the Trump administration to end multiple investigations, restore research funding, and avoid federal oversight — while maintaining its admissions independence. Trump mocked Goldman Sachs' chief economist after tariff warnings, telling the CEO (a hobbyist DJ) to “focus on being a DJ.” He also nominated Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics after firing the last commissioner over jobs numbers. An Israeli strike killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, four colleagues, and two others; Israel claims he was a Hamas operative. And convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell has been moved to a cushier prison with possible work release. In this week's Conflicted Community episode we're joined by Dr. Alick Isaacs, a lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and co-founder of Siach Shalom. Siach Shalom is am initiative that brings people from all walks of Israeli and wider Middle Eastern society—religious and secular, left and right—together to foster deep listening and dialogue. This conversation explores Dr. Isaacs' personal journey, from his upbringing as a religious Jew in the UK to his military service in Israel during the First Intifada, before exploring how his profound and sometimes difficult experiences shaped his commitment to peace and led him to a deeper spiritual calling grounded in Jewish tradition. This episode delves into the complex ideas behind the Israel-Palestine conflict, moving beyond the usual political talking points, to challenge common perceptions. The pair unpack the difference between the Western concept of "peace" and the Hebrew idea of "shalom" , while also discussing Alick's book, ‘Putting God First', and the idea of a Jewish politics of purpose. This is a conversation that goes to the heart of what it means to heal deep-seated divisions and find a way toward genuine, lasting peace in one of the world's most contested regions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing massive backlash — both domestic and international — over his government's decision late last week to take over Gaza City. Thousands marched in Tel Aviv Saturday to protest the decision, while the families of some of the remaining hostages called for a nationwide strike. On Monday, Australia became the latest country to announce plans to recognize a Palestinian state, while French President Emmanuel Macron called the Israeli plan 'a disaster of unprecedented gravity.' Already Palestinian health officials say 61,000 people in Gaza have died since the start of the war. Matthew Chance, chief global affairs correspondent for CNN, joins us from Jerusalem to talk about the latest in the war, the Israeli killing of five Al Jazeera journalists Sunday, and the risks that come with yet another escalation in the conflict. And in headlines: President Donald Trump ordered a federal takeover of Washington D.C.'s police, a federal judge blocked the release of Jeffrey Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell's grand jury transcripts, and AOL said it's ending its dial-up internet service.Show Notes:Check out Matthew's reporting – www.cnn.com/profiles/matthew-chanceCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
