In the United States, we have always lived with the history and realities of racism.Whether we have lived with it as an active part of our life or have had the privilege to ignore it and deny it, it has shaped our understanding of our country and each other. Since racism has always been a loaded, hot-button, triggering topic to discuss, many leaders have flatly avoided talking about it. Since the summer of 2020, however, organizations are realizing that this issue is not going away.Workers want organizations that are inclusive and equitable. As such, the avoidance strategy that has allowed leaders to manage this issue in the past is emerging as the biggest problem of all.Fortunately for all of us, Gena Cox has taken the time to think deeply about how to open the door to these important conversations.Listen in for compassionate, insightful, and practical advice to help all of us navigate conversations about creating inclusion in the workplace.Join us as we discuss:How the root cause of the failure of most DEI initiatives is avoidance driven by a lack of skills on the part of even the most well-meaning leadersHow respect is the opposite of grandstanding and is the foundation of our only viable path forward to create inclusive workplacesHow to have respectful relationships with your employees even when difficult conversations and decisions are neededThe Unleashing Your Great Work podcast is sponsored by the Great Work Journal! We are excited to bring you another encore presentation of a popular episode of Season 2. We hope you enjoy! As human beings, we are constantly focused on the doing, doing, doing, and Jeanette advises us that if we could just take a “power-pause” and listen more, we can gain a better understanding of what we need to accomplish our Great Work.Jeanette believes if we can listen more to ourselves, we can begin to understand what we need right now and truly begin to feel to engage in what Jeanette calls “mental listening”. We, as humans, are amazing, we are here to solve problems, and the things we worry about are the things we care about the most.If we can pause for a moment, and shift the “care for” to “care about”, we can understand that solving problems is not just about needing time off or time to get away, it's about learning to “un-worry”. It is only then that we discover “self-care isn't really about self…it's about care.”The Unleashing Your Great Work podcast is sponsored by the Great Work Journal! We are excited to bring you another encore presentation of a popular episode of Season 2. We hope you enjoy! In this week's episode we are diving into the two kinds of people in the world: lone wolves and pack wolves. Pack wolves who are great at creating things in community, and lone wolves who are great at generating outcomes from their own internal motivations and drive. As a natural born lone wolf myself, I am making the case that we really need both sets of skills if we are going to do Great Work.Join me as we discuss:Why it feels easier (to me) to be a lone wolfHow developing the skills of the pack wolf can elevate and improve the lone wolf's Great WorkThe pitfalls of being a disciple and the joys of being an apprenticeHow our pack wolf skills can help us understand our audience and enjoy our friends and familyThe Unleashing Your Great Work podcast is sponsored by the Great Work Journal! We are excited to bring you another encore presentation of a popular episode of Season 2. We hope you enjoy!Do you remember a time when a project took you so long to complete because everything needed to be “just right”?Maybe you're a music composer, and you can't quite finish that new song because something in the lyrics just refuses to make sense.Or, maybe you're like me, and you were writing a book that created internal turmoil because that book could only house thirteen brilliant ideas individually picked from a lifetime of knowledge. The explanation?Perfectionism. The problem with perfectionism? It's impossible. It's waiting for every single piece of the puzzle to be spotless. When we find ourselves confronting spouts of perfectionism, it makes accomplishing our Great Work ten times harder and ten times longer to achieve. If we can find a way to let go of being the best and pleasing every single person on the face of this earth, we can achieve something greater than perfection: Commitment to Excellence.I celebrate my willingness to be unique and my strength to fail fast.Because if we can't let go of getting it right on the first try, there's no possible way to achieve our Great Work in enough time to be able to celebrate it.Resources Mentioned: Join the Great Work Community here: amandacrowell.com/great-work-communityClick here to get your own copy of Amanda's book, Great Work.About The Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, author, and coach focused on changing our perspective on the world of work. We are excited to bring you another encore presentation of a popular episode of Season 2. We hope you enjoy!Gratitude is a powerful practice that impacts your life, and the lives of those for whom you are grateful. And, did you know that there are THREE kinds of gratitude? It's true!• There is gratitude for what's to come, called anticipation.• Gratitude for what's happening right now, called savoring.• And gratitude for what has happened already, called reminiscing. On this week's episode we dig into all three kinds of gratitude, and how best to benefit from a gratitude practice.Join me as I discuss:• Why the key to all three forms of gratitude is to go deep into them• How gratitude re-wires your brain to deliver major health and wellness benefits• Why Gratitude shouldn't be a vague, muted practice. It works best when it's detailed, robust, and vibrant!Gratitude is a powerful way to bring more joy into your life without having to wait for anyone else to come around, and before anything changes out there. Have you ever heard an idea that you thought you understood, but the more you heard, the more profound it became? Paula White's idea about “Side B” leadership is one such idea! When you first hear it, it sounds like a standard truism that it “takes all kinds” or is essential to “leverage your strengths,” which are two powerful ideas, but they are hardly new. But as she unpacks the idea further—helping us to see that every typical leadership skill has an untapped genius at its side that will unlock your leadership capacity further than you thought possible and that these leadership skills are like the members of a band who work better together than apart-- I realized her ideas go way beyond a simple analogy. Julie Ellis, a co-founder of Mabel's labels and the author of Big Gorgeous Goals, has a unique perspective on success. When she and her co-founders sold Mabel's Labels to Avery, she felt both proud of the accomplishment and sad about losing what they had enjoyed building. This is a very common but rarely discussed part of Great Work. So much of what we talk about focuses on getting started and overcoming hurdles, staying at it, and building toward success. But what happens when we get it? What happens when we do the impossible, summit the mountain, and achieve the dream? What do we do with the reality that even though we are grateful for the success we've achieved, we are also confronted with the loss? This is Julie's story. Julie's process of recovering her excitement for the work that was ahead of her helped her to develop her philosophy on Big Gorgeous Goals, which in turn became her book. This interview with Mary Tess Rooney is the reminder that we all need that our joy and happiness matter at least as much as what other people expect of us. Mary Tess is the author of Heart Value, a book that helps us ensure we are making career and life decisions from the intersection of the value we offer the world that also lights us up. What Mary Tess describes as Heart Value is very close to what I call Great Work, which is why it was such an easy decision to invite her to the podcast. And I'm very glad I did! Mary Tess is no pie-in-the-sky Pollyanna. She urges us to acknowledge that it can be challenging to speak up and share our heart value with the world, and she encourages us to be strategic and honest about what's possible right now and what might need some time to unfold. In both cases, she emphasizes that we are not rushing towards something better, but instead, we are building a habit of honoring our heart value. Join us as we discuss:· Why the people we work with need to see us in ways that matter to us instead of ways that matter to them.· How to let our heart value guide our practical actions and tactical choices, and how that is the surest way to create a life we love.· Why we need to impact our careers by sharing what lights us up and asking for the opportunity to do more of that· How to cherish your EPIC adventure, even when things do not go as planned Resources Mentioned:Website: https://marytessrooney.comIG and LinkedIn: @marytessrooneyFB page: @marytessrooneybuzzClick here to get your own copy of Amanda's book, Great Work. As such, the avoidance strategy that has allowed leaders to manage this issue in the past is emerging as the biggest problem of all.Fortunately for all of us, Gena Cox has taken the time to think deeply about how to open the door to these important conversations.Listen in for compassionate, insightful, and practical advice to help all of us navigate conversations about creating inclusion in the workplace.Join us as we discuss:How the root cause of the failure of most DEI initiatives is avoidance driven by a lack of skills on the part of even the most well-meaning leadersHow respect is the opposite of grandstanding and is the foundation of our only viable path forward to create inclusive workplacesHow to have respectful relationships with your employees even when difficult conversations and decisions are neededResources Mentioned: Get Gena's Book: https://genacox.com/book/Grab Gena's script: genacox.com/scripthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/genacox/Click here to get your copy of Amanda's book, Great Work.About The Guest:Dr. Gena Cox, CEO of Feels Human, LLC, is an organizational psychologist, executive coach, and author of Leading Inclusion, an award-winning guidebook for corporate leaders who want to build inclusive organizations from the top down. Join Melissa and Amanda as they discuss:How Melissa built the top podcast of 2022, MindLove from scratchHow our own growth can fuel our business growthHow authenticity is critical to resilienceResourceshttps://mindlove.com/premiumhttps://instagram.com/mindlovemelissaCome to our event on January 17th:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/474101469257SUMMARY:On this episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we are diving deep with Melissa Monte. Melissa is a mentor, speaker, and podcast host of “Mind Love”, where she helps people give their minds a little love (which we ALL need). Melissa believes that her Great Work comes from the evolution of someone she was mentally ignoring and subduing for years: herself. She guides us through and shows an immensely beautiful amount of vulnerability to her 10-year downward spiral where she had to find the strength to push back against the walls that were closing in on her mental well-being.Half of her life, Melissa built 100% of her life around everyone else and the core being of who she really was. However, through the struggles, Melissa came to realize that the more vulnerable she is what she needs, the more she can move forward. She works with her personal goals, fights brain negativities, and scratches her own itches first in order to help the world around her.We may not realize that we are all struggling with such similar things, and yet we still believe our struggles are so unique and no one will understand. However, the basis of what we as human beings go through is so immensely similar than we may realize. Melissa expands her Great Work to the minds of others, helping people not only to expand their minds with care and self-love, but also with guidance to see outside the bubble that they themselves or society has created for them.About the Guest:Melissa Monte is a mindset mentor, speaker, and podcast host. After a 10 year downward spiral, she became obsessed with understanding the power of the mind and used what she learned to rebuild her life. Now, through her popular podcast Mind Love, she helps tens of thousands of people each month give their minds a little love to think, feel and live well.Mind Love has won multiple awards and is a top mental health podcast in over 70 countries and has been featured in Forbes, Harper's Bazaar and NYC Journal.About the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. However, there was one consistent method that seemed to be the most present in every single one of my guest's interviews, and that was to very simply, TAKE A BREAK! When we are able to take time off from our busy lives, whether it be the holiday season, a vacation, or even a long weekend, we are able to experience time with family and friends that is “unusual” than normal. When I say “unusual”, I'm referring to the simple things in life (hobbies, passions, guilty pleasures) that we don't get to enjoy on an average daily basis. I have a love for art. I love to draw, paint, see how watercolors flow against a plain white canvas, or clashing oil paints one on top of the other. It's an escape for me. An escape from the very verbal, chatty life I live day-to-day. When I get the opportunity to experience this passion it feels “unusual.” Make sense? It's very easy for us to spend time thinking into the past reflecting on what never got done, or gazing into the future preparing for what needs to be completed in a week's time. I'm here to tell you to stop. Make a list of some hobbies/personal tasks you'd like to accomplish during your time off this holiday season. Once your list is complete, go into that list, pick something, and just do it. Play that new video game that's been sitting on your Playstation gathering dust. Finish that book that's been settled on your bedside table the past few months. Explore nature and go on a walk to take in the fresh air. Let 2023 be the year you discover your own resilience and discover your courage to finally divulge your Great Work to the world. Happy Holidays! I'll see you next year.About the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. Although, I will admit, taking a moment for oneself and stepping away from one's Great Work is sometimes necessary. That could mean taking an hour to read a few chapters in a book, unwinding with a good television program, or even spending time with Mother Nature herself. Kate Culver, founder of “Song to Gaia” and lifelong lover of Gaia (Greek Goddess of the Planet/Mother Earth), fully believes that HER great work is deeply rooted in her intimate connection with nature. In this world, right now, there is so much chaos and unsureness, and Katie's perspective is that tomorrow will never be the same as today. We must prepare ourselves for each new day to throw something new at us. How can we best prepare for these moments? Katie suggests three different methods to find a true embodiment with the wild nature surrounding us: find a “sit-spot” (a place in nature to reflect, reconnect, and renew your openness), Embodiment Meditation (getting out of our minds and back home into our center, for a sense of fullness), and Path of Renewal (a deep reflection of our lives and how we have gotten to where we are today). With these special practices, we can allow Gaia to take full control and return us to our paths of resilience in our Great Work.About the Guest:Kate Culver, founder of Song to Gaia, is a life-long lover of Gaia and is devoted to her care and feeding. After many years as an activist fighting injustices, saying "No!", she learned the power of "Yes". First through Permaculture-The Art of Beneficial Relationships, then through personal, deep transformational work. She healed herself from a chronic health issue that had left her unable to use her hands, through a combination of nature connection and deep self exploration. Kate has developed her own unique system for Finding Your Path Home to Self.Kate inspires hope and possibilities in her audiences and deep emotional and psychological shifts in her clients, where they uncover their super-strengths, divine gifts and life purpose.About the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. In business, and in life, we can get caught in moments of “ugh” and “err” which causes us to lose the high frequency of energy we need to achieve resilience. In these moments, we need only summon the healing power and wisdom of Tess Alburn, a business and life coach who describes her Great Work as “midwifing” where she helps talented woman entrepreneurs get into their greatest ripple effect. Tess understands that it can take a lot of time, energy, and effort to find your life's greatest calling, but it shouldn't come at the price of sacrificing your internal joy. As we enter the holidays, Tess reminds us to focus on the gift of joy and hone in on creating it intentionally in the tenuous times. Because without the ups and downs, our energy is free and available for us to connect with our Great Work not only physically, but also emotionally and spiritually until our resilience has been built upon a foundation of pure joy.About the Guest:Tessa is a business and life coach for women. Utilizing nearing two decades of experience as a trainer and facilitator of live and virtual events, Tessa helps women entrepreneurs get over the six-figure mark in their business, by creating a plan that works for them and rewriting the mindset issues that have kept them playing small. Her passion for life, culture and SCUBA adventures have taken her both abroad and to 38 US States. Start-up businesses always have their ins and outs, their do's and don't's, and maybe even their “yes, and's” and “no, but's”. On this resilience episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we get to meet and speak with advisor, author, and founder of BusinessRiff, Mary Scott. Mary has always considered herself a “connector” and has found Great Work in connecting people of many skills and resources to help their start-up businesses flourish. However, starting a business can have it's drawbacks, and it's important to remember your own value and self-care when the going gets tough. A big fan of getting “off-planet” (a term coined to describe the escape from work life into rejuvenating self-care), Mary gives us the reassurance that if we know what works for us, and more importantly what DOESN'T work for us, we can achieve a conquering mindset of changing the world in what whatever Great Work we have to give.About the Guest:Mary Scott, award-winning filmmaker, founder of BusinessRiff and author of the St. Louis Startup ResourceGuide, wants StartUps to be wildly successful. As an advisor to hundreds of established businesses and startups, she works with inventors, tech & product founders, and solopreneurs to get them organized, and pitch perfect to present to investors and get checks instead of chuckles. This is going to be Fun!About the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. On this holiday episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we are charged with the task of defeating “shiny object syndrome” with the help and leadership of Consuela Muñoz. Certified strength coach, speaker, author, and founder of The CEO Way, Consuela believes that everyone should be more excited about the work they are doing, and that celebrating and engaging your strengths is how you own your confidence. Consuela reminds us that if we are finding ourselves “sick-to-our-stomach” in the work we are trying to accomplish, it's alright say to ourselves “I have to do something else.” When we dive deeper into things, we realize and understand that we may be in the right place, we are just disengaged. And, more importantly, we have lost sight of our strengths. Some say “Life is short”, but Consuela's perspective is that “Life is LONG.” Remember, if there's something that others don't understand about you, whether it be something that makes you feel weird or feel different, THAT is most likely your strength worth fighting for.Join me!Do you want 2023 to be the year you finally get to your Great Work? Avital Spivek, an online tech coach, educator, computer engineer, and martial artist who's favorite Great Work is helping people who didn't grow up with technology be successful at applying this new language in their business life. Consistently inspired by her grandmother's ability as a magnificent craftsperson, Avital grew to craft anything her heart desired, which later brought her the gift of showing others how to do something very simply - IN COMES TECHNOLOGY! Avital shares her ability to bring older generations into the world of “Computer Land” and help people understand that the language of technology is just that…another language. Avital believes that if we can translate our tech, age, generational, and skill-based languages together, we can then remove any feelings of inadequacy and rebuild or personal, AND technological, resilience. As human beings, are constantly focused on the doing, doing, doing, and Jeanette advises us that if we could just take a “power-pause” and listen more, we can gain a better understanding of what we need to accomplish our Great Work. Jeanette believes if we can listen more to ourselves, we can begin to understand what we need right now and truly begin to feel to engage in what Jeanette calls “mental listening”. We, as humans, are amazing, we are here to solve problems, and the things we worry about are the things we care about the most. If we can pause for a moment, and shift the “care for” to “care about”, we can understand that solving problems is not just about needing time off or time to get away, it's about learning to “un-worry”. It is only then that we discover "self-care isn't really about self…it's about care."Join us as we discuss: 02:25 Pause for a little bit and listen more!04:27 How do we start self care in the workplace for us to do great work?06:46 How can we respond with the right intent? 08:00 What we care about is also what we worry about.09:27 The FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.10:14 Solving the problem of burnout isn't just about taking more time off, it's about learning to unworry.12:56 Shifting the “care for” to “care about”.15:00 How do we help, how do we be of service? 17:44 Good leaders listen with their heart, not just with their ears18:58 Self care goes from “me care” to “we care”. 22:54 How our relationship with our work, with the people in our workplace, and with the culture at work could affect our health and our relationship with ourselves.26:06 We're distracted by solving the wrong problem.About the Guest:Jeanette Bronée Rethinker, Culture Strategist, Global Keynote & 2 x TEDx Speaker, Author, CEO & Founder of Path for Life®, Inc.Jeanette is rethinking self-care in the workplace as the foundation for peak performance, engagement, and a culture where people belong and work better together. She shows us how to shift from a burnout mindset, operating in survival mode, to a Self-Care Mindset®, where we can harness our human advantage and create a Culture of Care® that's built on Confidence, Agility, Resilience, and Equity. An internationally recognized well-being expert, she shares the tools to reclaim agency and cultivate the human connection that helps us communicate and collaborate with curiosity and care so that we can navigate change and grow.Integrating her 20-year background in business, mindfulness, and health, she gives us a C.A.R.E.-driven framework to cut through the noise of stress, get unstuck, and take charge of our well-being as the foundation for personal and professional growth.https://www.jeanettebronee.comAbout the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. On this week's episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we dive into the worlds of Mat Heagerty, a rad graphic novelist creating Great Work one Lumberjack Vampire at a time (A Lumberjackula, if you will). From his middle school punk rock days to his serious writing journey beginning at age 22, Mat has always been in touch with a creative identity. And what comes along with pursuing a creative life, you may be asking? A whole lot of hearing the word “NO”. Do you remember a time when a project took you so long to complete because everything needed to be “just right”? Maybe you're a music composer, and you can't quite finish that new song because something in the lyrics just refuses to make sense. Or, maybe you're like me, and you were writing a book that created internal turmoil because that book could only house thirteen brilliant ideas individually picked from a lifetime of knowledge. The explanation? Perfectionism. The problem with perfectionism? It's impossible. It's waiting for every single piece of the puzzle to be spotless. When we find ourselves confronting spouts of perfectionism, it makes accomplishing our Great Work ten times harder and ten times longer to achieve. If we can find a way to let go of being the best and pleasing every single person on the face of this earth, we can achieve something greater than perfection: Commitment to Excellence. As I approach my great and beautiful forty-fifth year of life this week, I reflect on how much Great Work I have achieved and will continue to achieve. I celebrate my willingness to be unique and my strength to fail fast. Because if we can't let go of getting it right on the first try, there's no possible way to achieve our Great Work in enough time to be able to celebrate it.Join us as we discuss: 00:59 Perfectionism is the number one weakness in our lives.02:10 The two problems of Perfectionism.04:44 How perfectionism can play that role in creative work, scientific work, and in an email. 05:24 Perfection is impossible but we're making it as our standard.07:19 The difference between Perfectionism and Commitment to Excellence.09:55 Perfectionism is based on other people's perceptions and expectations.11:05 Perfectionism is removing uniqueness from your work.12:52 Great work is built on the four pillars of great work.15:04 What is a defensive failure, and how perfectionism becomes a defensive failure.16:45 The consequences of perfectionism.About the Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. Ever feel a little “poodley”? Or what about “moodily”? Maybe “gloomily”? Or even “wootily”? On this week's episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, Dr. Amanda Crowell discusses the one thing that predicts whether or not we do Great Work: our own minds. What if you could change your thoughts and operate in a completely different world? Using the “Cognitive Behavioral Model” as a starting point, Dr. Crowell explains how our thoughts create our feelings, and so, if we change our thoughts, we can change our feelings and, therefore, our lives. Building on this, she then explains how she's grown her understanding of this to a more nuanced mix of feelings she has named gloomily, moodily, poodley, and wootily.Join us as we discuss: 01:40 If you change your thoughts, you can change your life.03:02 Reasons you're not doing what you say you'll do.04:59 You can find something interesting about almost everything. If you want to do something, and you don't currently have an interest in it, you can build that interest.06:21 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Model - Another way to talk about changing your mind with the purpose of changing your life.08:57 It's the thought that created the feeling, not the circumstance.11:18 What happens in your mind is what creates your lived experience of it, and you could choose a different lived experience.13:36 The thing that kept you from fully embracing the idea of “creating your lived experience” is the thoughts and feelings of having not been good enough.15:32 The Standard Cognitive Distortions - Ways that our mind has a tendency to react in less effective, efficient ways.17:40 Allows an experience to bring up more than one kind of thought, resulting in more than one kind of emotion.23:02 Do not change your thoughts from one to another, but instead change the balance of thoughts.Links Mentioned:How To Be Awesome At Your Job Podcast: https://awesomeatyourjob.com/797-how-to-find-and-do-your-great-work-with-amanda-crowell/Amanda's TedxTalk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWp87GXDvEkAbout the Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. On this week's episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, advisor, author, and public speaker Michelle Arpin Begina guides us through one of THE MOST taboo topics most people fear the most: money. Why is it so difficult to talk about money? As the daughter of two entrepreneurs, Michelle is no stranger to overcoming many trials and tribulations with the thoughts and struggles of money. She takes us on a powerful journey through her own personal relationship with money and how it's shaped her into finding her own Great Work. Michelle brings an insightful awareness to the fact that money isn't just about how much you make, how much you save, or even how much you spend. It's about the root of where the idea of money lives and where it comes from. If we are told money isn't important, do we spend more? What happens when we make more money? How do we gather the courage to ask for more money without feeling guilty? Michelle answers all of these questions, and so much more! Listen in as Michelle shows us why we should be more open to discussing the topic of money and how easy it is to talk about once we finally gather the courage to do so.Join us as we discuss: 02:24 Anytime we know how to do something, it always becomes easier. 03:06 What is it about specifically talking about money that is important?04:14 A story of someone who's feeling weird talking about money, and what opens up for them when they learn how to talk about money.07:18 Common about money.08:14 Why do we have such a hard time talking about money?11:26 Why would we feel offended to be talking to somebody who sees money or perceives money in a way that's different from us?13:54 What can someone do to start learning how to talk about money?18:51 We were internalizing what we're hearing from the outside world.20:09 Michelle's parents' relationship with money and how she personally overcame it.26:17 Michelle's struggles in her late teens, in her 20s.31:25 Marrying love of people with love of numbers. 33:42 How Michelle helped New Jersey become the first state to include financial psychology as part of their standards. About the Guest:If you still think of wealth as purely a numbers game, you haven't met Michelle Arpin Begina. An Advisor, Author, and Speaker, Michelle has taken her own money story and alchemized it into a passion for financial literacy that marries the science of wealth management with the art of financial therapy. Michelle grew up airplane, sports car, and yacht poor – surrounded by the outward signs of wealth but plagued by the insecurity of knowing it was a sham, and her family was never more than a bounced check away from disaster. It turned out to be the perfect starting point for a career dedicated to revolutionizing the way we relate to money (yes, it's a relationship!) and the way financial advisors work with their clients. Often called the Erin Brockovich of financial literacy, Michelle challenges us to ditch the notion that it only lives on Wall Street and find it where it truly resides: at the intersection of knowledge, skills, and emotional composure. On this week's episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we get a behind-the-scenes look into the fantasy worlds created by author JA White, a novelist who writes creepy books for kids. 5th grade teacher and Award-winning author of “The Thickety”, “Archimancy” (the first novel in The Shadow Series), and “The Nightbooks” (now a top 10 Netflix film produced by one of his childhood heroes, Sam Raimi), JA White tells us more about why his work makes him feel “shiny inside”. From sneaking off to his childhood basement to read creepy books, since childhood books he claims “weren't scary enough”, to having a digital billboard in Times Square, White takes us on his epic journey of the Great Work that he has slowly discovered within his writing career. He believes whole-heartedly that “There is no such thing as wasted writing”, a motto he has clung to since his first two novels never came to fruition, one of which being completely erased off of a floppy disc (anyone born after the year 2000 will have to google what a “floppy disc” is…you'll be shocked). As you traverse this episode, you'll hear the excitement I have interviewing him as he reveals the ins-and-outs about creating Great Work in his own writing, and the struggles, obstacles, and self-doubts that come along with letting the book tell YOU what to write. Join us as we discuss: 02:01 Your work should make you feel shiny inside, and a part of the shininess comes from the suffering that goes into it. 03:25 JA White's great work.04:36 JA's short story is one of the first movies that was filmed during the pandemic.07:31 Delegate - Letting people who are good at what they do, do their thing.10:33 JA's sad first novel stories. 11:42 The book called Queens Nightmares. 13:34 How JA got a call from an editor who was at Disney World.15:41 Why outlines don't work for JA.21:53 Writing is just figuring out what you should not tell.22:54 JA's hardships in writing his books.26:53 The people that JA drew the most inspiration from.29:17 How has the reception been for these creepy books for kids? About the Guest:J.A. White writes creepy books for children. The four novels of his Thicketyseries have received numerous starred reviews and other accolades that make him feel shiny inside, including a Children's Choice Award for Best Debut Novelist. His novel Nightbooks has been translated into 11 languages and was made into a Netflix movie pr oduced by Sam Raimi, and the first novel of his Shadow School series, Archimancy, was recently nominated for the Sunshine State Young Reader Award. This podcast episode is a reflection on myself and MY OWN Great Work. The idea of “Great Work” is the work that matters most to you. For myself, I wrote a book (a lifelong dream of mine), received a PhD, have a podcast, did consulting in schools, and so much more work that was so important to me. It may seem obvious to do great work when you feel it is YOUR great work, when it comes from YOUR unique point of view, when it keeps YOU out of your comfort zone, and causes you to meet good people doing great things. You begin to leave a legacy behind you. Your unique idea of great work becomes an “of course”, OF COURSE you are going to do the work. However, one thing that can happen unintentionally is to gloss over the fact, when you talk about doing great work, that it is really hard and terrifying. In reality, doing great work is a joy, but it also a struggle. It's a struggle against ourselves, our expectations, procrastination, perfectionism, burning ourselves out, and even being afraid to fail. The idea of “I can't” is so prevalent in our brains when confronted with the possibility of achieving great work. Our ideas become filled with such high stakes, and we need to remember to lower the stakes, drain the drama, and focus on what matters most to us. I want to be honest with you about Great Work and how I engage in a struggle to do great work every day.You are not alone. We are doing Great Work together.Join us as we discuss:03:28 In reality, doing great work is a struggle and a joy.04:57 Struggle is reasonable because great work at its core is high stakes.05:24 Reasons why doing your great work is hard.08:19 Think about the proposition of great work.09:10 The question of leaving your legacy behind you.09:51 Nature of great work is terrifying, yet nobody says that they don't want to do great work.12:11 There was a part of my great work that I had been ignoring.14:26 Middle school is a vital age because it is the time when the body is triggering the body, the hormones, the brain, and puberty is happening.15:26 My stories and realizations in my orientation keynote at the University of Toledo.17:56 If you think you don't have any great work, or you don't know what your great work is, think through all the times that you were just consumed with jealousy or envy.20:36 Middle-grade students are not getting the educational media that they deserve.22:21 If you are in the thick of the terror of doing great work, know that you are not alone.Resources Mentioned: Click here to get your own copy of Amanda's book, Great Work. Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, author and creator of the Great Work journals. She educates future teachers, coaches accidental entrepreneurs, and speaks about how to make progress on great work to colleges and corporate teams. She is the author of the book, Great Work, Do What Matters Most Without Sacrificing Everything Else. Amanda said her early years were both lovely and complicated. At two years old she was diagnosed with a developmental seizure disorder, meaning that once her brain was further developed, the seizures would stop. Until she was nine, she took medications that affected her motor skills and general alertness. In this week's podcast episode, Amanda shared her experience of those critical developmental years. She had difficulty functioning in school and in social interactions, but she did have friends, was able to watch TV and knew her teachers' names. Once she discontinued the seizure medication, everything opened up. At times it was an overwhelming experience. It also sparked a tremendous sense of wonder and curiosity about people and social dynamics as the world unfolded in front of her. Today, everything Amanda does as a coach, author, speaker and podcast host of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, points to doing the work that matters the most to you, what she refers to as YOUR Great Work. It might involve building a business, inciting a movement, creating breathtaking art, writing world-changing books, or helping other people to heal and grow into their potential. YOUR Great Work is a combined fascination with human achievement and a passion for helping others in order to explore how to get YOUR work out into the world where it belongs. Dr. Amanda Crowell, a university professor, cognitive psychologist, and coach, developed a time management system that helps people be productive without burning out after she experienced severe burnout herself. Amanda explains how to transform outcomes and avoid burnout by recognizing our own expertise, shifting focus, and discovering what key elements to do differently. When we reconfigure “how” we work, we can produce the results we want and feel more fulfilled without changing our lives. Amanda is the author of “Great Work” and podcast host of “Unleashing Your Great Work”. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:50] After a stormy start in life, Amanda had an intense academic career. [04:32] Amanda realized that she wanted to make a difference and it would mean a different pathway. [05:02] The surprise of finding how different (chaotic) work process is outside academia. [05:55] Amanda starts to burn out working around the clock. [07:39] The three key indicators of burnout. [08:46] Amanda reaches a mental and physical breaking point. [10:50] How Amanda decides she wants a very different life for herself. [12:34] “How did I let it get this bad?” resulted from holding onto beliefs that were not true. [13:45] Unpacking and understanding unhealthy and undermining beliefs. [15:13] How “self expertise” awareness is essential for effective collaboration. [17:31] Considering how to configure your life differently utilizing newly-acceptable options. [19:06] Resetting expectations and the illusion of what is “non-negotiable”. [20:11] Amanda explores what she could do with less intensity that nobody will notice. [21:34] Changing the relationship dynamic when you respond differently. [23:10] Amanda's focus is improvement science or quality improvement to help people work more effectively. [23:58] How workflow analysis can increase productivity and reduce burnout. [24:30] Focusing on key small details can make a significant difference. [26:40] Making all the pieces of your life fit your self expertise. [27:09] Despite (deliberately) delayed responses from Amanda, her boss gives her a great evaluation. [27:41] Optimizing focus and workflow results in more satisfied clients. [29:40] How to set employees up for success so they can perform well. [30:49] You cannot be in solid relationship with someone else if you don't know what matters to you. [33:10] We must develop skills as enterprises and employees to recognize better what work matters. [34:54] Without leaving your job or getting a new manager, you can improve your work experience. [38:24] The hierarchy of ideas can be reframed to help people feel satisfied today while also feeling connected to their big goals that they want to keep making progress towards. [41:47] When we feel like we have agency and advancing something that matters the experience is very different. [43:22] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Think back to when you felt angriest as you listened to my interview with Amanda. What triggered the biggest emotional reaction? Focus on that aspect of your work to start to address your burnout. Second, don't forget self care, and, third, for a particular task you don't want to do consider “what would it require for me to get rid of this task?” RESOURCES Amandacrowell.com Dr. Amanda Crowell on LinkedIn Amanda Crowell on Instagram Amanda's new book “Great Work” Amanda's podcast “Unleashing Your Great Work” QUOTES “Nobody loved the fact that I was being pulled away from the family like that. And nobody loved the Amanda who was left by behind living on those fumes.” “I'm not going to miss my kids growing up. I'm not going to miss a good relationship with my husband. Like for what? For email?” “You can't be in a real relationship with another person if you don't know what matters to you, and you must honor what matters to that person too.” “If you hate your job so much, I would address your burnout.” “I would just say ‘Open the door, just a crack' that what I'm saying might actually be true.”
We ALL have things we always say we're going to do but then DON'T DO. There are some things we procrastinate as if our lived depend on it. Why? Defensive failure. We'd rather fail in little daily ways that fail at our big dream. In this episode, we explore Amanda Crowell's 3 defensive failure cycles and offer tips on how to overcome them. Gratitude is a powerful practice that impacts your life, and the lives of those for whom you are grateful. And that's exactly the kind of fuel that powers Great Work.Take a listen!About the Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, author and coach changing our perspective on the world of work. How are you?If your first, knee jerk response was “Busy!” or “Crazy busy” or “Scary busy” then this interview is for you. My guest this week, Dr. Don Khouri, invites us to protect our “Yes.” Whether others are asking for a favor, offering an opportunity, or handing down a task, our bias is usually to say “yes!” Don suggests that before we give away a single “yes,” we need to ask ourselves some critical questions.Join us as we discussThe five questions that we should ask before we say “yes”Why a default mode of “no” will actually make us more valuable collaborators and employeesThe transformation and ease that comes from being purposefully productive instead of busyAbout the Guest:Don Khouri coaches executives and business leaders who want to be more productive and profitable. He does this helping busy executives streamline their activities and better chose activities on which to focus their time and attention. He is the author of When to Say Yes, The 5 Steps to Protect Your Time. Dr. Khouri is known for his straightforward expertise when it comes to getting crystal clear on identifying which requests to accept, and which requests to say “no” to and reject. Through his coaching and training programs, busy executives are able to increase their productivity and focus, while eliminating the enormous volume of distractions that are part of being a business leader in today's lightning-fast information age. Don has an extensive background in software development and has held several key positions at Fidelity Investments during his successful 21-year career. His leadership positions at Fidelity Investments include being Vice President of Software Development, where he headed global teams and complex multi-million-dollar programs. Don is a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems. He holds a master's degree in Human Development, and an MBA in Organizational Behavior from Boston University. In addition, he earned a bachelor's degree from Babson College, which has been voted the top school in the U.S. for entrepreneurship.Connect with Don:Email: don@donkhouri.comWebsite: www.donkhouri.com Book: www.whentosayyes.com Connect with Amanda:Website: https://amandacrowell.com/Pre-Order My Book: https://amandacrowell.com/great-work/About The Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, author and coach changing our perspective on the world of work. Dyan DeNapoli wanted to be a marine biologist since she was a child. Working with dolphins and penguins called to her, from the inside. At the age of 30, as she was working as a silversmith making jewelry, her parents gifted her a month long EarthWatch Expedition working with Dolphins in Hawaii. As she stood at the airport in Hawaii, waiting for her flight home, Dyan made an important decision: She didn't know how and she didn't know when but she WAS going to dedicate herself to working with marine animals. And boy has she! From getting a second bachelors degree, to finally getting hired at the New England Aquarium (after years of volunteering), to running the world largest animal rescue mission in history, Dyan's commitment to animal conservation has been nothing short of extraordinary.Join us as we discuss:How she found the courage to follow her dreams, despite a total lack of guaranteesWhat to do when you fail miserably at the job you've always wanted to doWhy she loves sharing her story and the story of the animals she cares for, whether that's on a TedXStage, in an elementary school, or via her books.About the Guest: Dyan DeNapoli is a penguin expert, TED speaker, and award-winning author. Her first book, The Great Penguin Rescue, chronicles her experiences helping to manage the rescue of 40,000 penguins from an oil spill in South Africa. This week, I'm creating the 12th episode of "Unleashing Your Great Work". A dozen episodes are out there in the world, entertaining DOZENS of people. Over the past 12 episodes, I've learned some things about great work. When I put the podcast together, I already had a lot of ideas about what great work is, how it works, what it looks like and how it feels. But I've been excited by how much I've learned from the guests. For example: ◊ Even for the greatest among us, claiming your work as “Great Work” is HARD (Mike Ganino, episode 11)◊ Great work is more like a best friend than a soulmate (Linda Ugelow, Episode 7)◊ We all need reminders to STOP WORKING, because Great Work seems to go hand-in-hand with overworking (Alyssa Adams, Episode 3)◊ Great Work needs to be enjoyable… otherwise, what's the point? (Trish Blain, episode 5)◊ Having a podcast is FUN! (All the episodes!)Ready to hear the six lessons I've learned over the past 12 episodes?Let's do it...About the Host:Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, author and coach changing our perspective on the world of work. Welcome to the Your Good News Podcast with Katherine Getty! In this episode, I am joined by Amanda Crowell Itliong. Amanda is living with ovarian cancer for the 4th time in 13 years. Amanda also loves making homemade cards (of which no 2 are ever alike) and she calls her art work #NotDeadYetCreations. Take a look at your to-do list. How much time do you have set aside for the things you want to do? And how much of the tasks on that list don't actually need to get done? As an entrepreneur, there's so much pressure to be productive, hussle all the time, and crank out as much work as possible. True happiness, however, comes from making time for the things you genuinely enjoy and learning to let go of the rest. In this episode, I'm chatting with Dr. Amanda Crowell, cognitive psychologist and business coach behind the Aligned Time method, about managing your time well and making happiness a priority, both in your life and in schedule. What you'll find in this episode: Why doing more isn't always best Knowing the difference between what you do and don't have to do Allowing yourself to do certain things “less well” Making space and time for what you really want to do The three parts of Amanda's Aligned Time Method How to let your identity evolve without losing yourself For full show notes, resources, and link, head to https://www.dralyssaadams.com/uncommon-couch-podcast The Uncommon Couch is a show for trailblazing entrepreneurs and change makers who are ready to transform how they think about business growth. It's a place to explore the evolving edge of business and consciousness and to dive into the psychological and energetic side of entrepreneurship. Not a lot of people will admit this, but I'm glad - if not reluctant - to share that I am a recovering perfectionist. Surprising as it may seem, the legal profession is built around technicalities and even the most minor slip-up can set you, or worse, a client, back. Whether that's reputation, money, or a combination of both. So screwing up feels not just like professional failure, it's personal. Thankfully, my guest today is an expert on breaking the connection between familiarity and freedom. Dr. Amanda Crowell is cognitive psychologist, coach, and author of the Aligned Time Journal. She has been a TedX Speaker, a (in her words) reluctant runner, and a guiding light to what she has termed, “Accidental Entrepreneurs.”Amanda and I discuss what it's like to suddenly find yourself at the helm, what it means to associate ourselves with our ideas (and stereotypes), and why it's important to “love loosely.”Enjoy the show.
Amanda is a badass human being. Her tagline tells it like it is. #notdeadyet While you'd be tempted to think this conversation is all about cancer. It is really about how our circumstances define us, and what it really means to be ALIVE. At 29 years old, living in San Francisco, with her dream job, a husband, and travel, she was taken, quite literally, to her knees by the big-bad C-word, ovarian cancer. Now, at 41 years old, she has been in and out of remission countless times, and lives with the diagnosis of terminal cancer and weekly treatments to prolong the inevitable. What makes Amanda so incredible is far-reaching beyond her cancer chronicles, it is how she has chosen to show up. While we would all like to imagine the person we'd become when shit hits the fan on repeat, Amanda is who I would aspire to be. She is hilarious, joyful, fierce, and has found powerful ways to create a meaningful life. She is an advocate, an activist, a public speaker, a patient advocate and the kind of person who sends you a hand-made card in the mail to say thanks. I am honored to have spent time with Amanda in conversation, laughter, reflection and mutual respect. I hope you enjoy her energy and learn from her story. And remember Amanda's sentiment, while cancer in many ways defines and rules her life, her autonomy, her body, it is in no way the totality of who she is. No one thing is the totality of you.
