In The War People: A Social History of Common Soldiers during the Era of the Thirty Years War (Cambridge UP, 2024), Lucian Staino-Daniles uses the transnational story of a single regiment to examine how ordinary soldiers, military women, and officers negotiated their lives within the chaos and uncertainty of the seventeenth century. Raised in Saxony by Wolf von Mansfeld in spring 1625 in the service of the King of Spain, the Mansfeld Regiment fought for one and a half years in northern Italy before collapsing, leaving behind a trail of dead civilians, murder, internal lawsuits...and copious amounts of paperwork. Their story reveals the intricate social world of seventeenth-century mercenaries and how this influenced how they lived and fought. Through this rich microhistorical case study, Lucian Staiano-Daniels sheds new light on key seventeenth-century developments like the military revolution and the fiscal-military state, which is supported by statistical analysis drawn from hundreds of records from the Thirty Years War. This pathbreaking book unifies the study of war and conflict with social history. Learn more about your ad choices. One in 800 babies are born with clubfoot, a treatable birth impairment that left untreated prevents a child from walking, and becomes the root cause for illiteracy, abuse, malnutrition, and poverty in many parts of the world. Clubfoot is routinely treated at birth in high income countries, but historically children born in low and middle income countries have not had access to quality treatment. Today, co-hosts Jonathan Jackson and Amie Vaccaro sit down with Chesca Colloredo-Mansfeld, co-founder of MiracleFeet to hear about how she and her team have dedicated themselves to making a simple, cost-effective treatment for clubfoot available to every baby born with the condition. They are on track to serve 100,000 children later this year with a goal to treat 70% of clubfoot cases in the countries they operate in. We discuss: Chesca's journey from the moment she realized she wanted to get out of the corporate world and discovered a fixable problem she could focus on, including her recent decision to step down as CEO to ensure long-term sustainability of the organization How Chesca's business background helped her take a different approach to building the organization and investing in technology to support its mission The art of storytelling for a little known cause focused on dignity and possibility How to fundraise from cost-effectiveness focused investors How the thoughtful implementation of a mobile data collection system (CommCare) allowed MiracleFeet's providers to measure quality, deliver better services, and gather data to support continual fundraising How to ensure quality while scaling an intervention Pivotal moments in Chesca's journey including breaking down in tears on a redeye to secure a $1 million grant from Google Listening to your intuition and backing it up with rigorous data and analysis Chapters: 01:26 Welcoming Chesca: The Journey Begins 01:57 Chesca's Backstory: From Global Childhood to Business World 03:55 Discovering a Treatment for Clubfoot: A Life-Changing Moment 05:16 The Birth of MiracleFeet: From Vision to Reality 05:34 Taking the Leap: Transitioning from Corporate to Social Impact 08:59 Building MiracleFeet: Challenges, Fundraising, and Growth 21:08 Reflections on Storytelling, Fundraising, and Instinct 27:19 Expanding Reach and Impact: The Future of MiracleFeet 39:11 Harnessing Technology for Global Health Impact 40:22 Innovative Solutions to Healthcare Challenges 42:57 Empowering Local Teams with Data 46:27 Navigating Founder Transition and Organizational Growth 56:53 Mentoring the Next Generation of Social Entrepreneurs 01:12:37 Reflections on Business Acumen in Nonprofit Success MiracleFeet: https://www.miraclefeet.org/ MiracleFeet's use of CommCare: https://www.miraclefeet.org/stories/the-tool-that-saved-us-in-2020 Impact Delivery: https://sites.dimagi.com/impact-delivery Sign up to our newsletter, and stay informed of Dimagi's work We are on social media - follow us for the latest from Dimagi: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube If you enjoy this show, please leave us a 5-Star Review and share your favorite episodes with friends.

This week on The Hamilton Review Podcast, Dr. Bob welcomes Chesca Colloredo - Mansfeld to the show! Chesca discusses the incredible way that MiracleFeet is impacting children and family's lives all over the world. Driven by the idea that a newly accepted low-cost, non-surgical treatment could have extraordinary impact on the lives of children born with clubfoot in low and middle income countries, Chesca co-founded MiracleFeet in 2010. She successfully built on experience in investment banking, management consulting and technology start-ups to refashion herself as a social entrepreneur. Originally from England, Chesca grew up in Africa and Asia, and has lived and worked in Pakistan, Ecuador, UK and US. She first became interested in clubfoot while working at The University of Iowa, where the Ponseti Method was pioneered. Drawn to the opportunity to have an impact on children's lives in some of the countries where she had grown up, she joined a small group of parents and surgeons interested in creating an organization to address the long-overlooked issue of untreated clubfoot. She studied economics and political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain scholar, and later earned an MBA from Stanford University. Today I am talking to Lo Mansfeld, a Registered Nurse and creator of The Labor Mama. On this episode we dive deep into the concept of "Motherless Mothering". Both Lo and myself have bonded over being Moms, but not having our Moms available and present to us during Motherhood. This is a raw and emotional episode that will hopefully help any mama who's in a similar situation. For more from Juna, check out the Juna App!

My guest is Karl Von Mansfeld, a musician and proactive metalhead since 1987. He does the programming, "conceptual nonsense" and is the self proclaimed janitor of the band Mansfeld based in Germany. Karl was also a show promoter and wrote for the German online zine Blood-chamber. I met Karl on Episode 2 of the Unmuted Podcast, and he has not only been a huge part of the Tribe since but has introduced us to so much music, including his own, that we have fallen in love with!
In today's episode, we'll take another look at the events of the early 1620s in Europe. This time from the the viewpoint of the grand political stage, up to the ascension of King Charles I in March 1625. Particularly, the build up to the series of religious and dynastic conflicts that will come to be known as the 30 Years War. We'll zoom in on the parliament of 1624, and the first attempts at military intervention on the continent by the Stuart Dynasty. And we'll see how this set King Charles on the road to conflict with his English parliament. A constitutional tug of war that will have all sorts of impacts on the creation (and near total destruction) of the Maryland colony. We'll also take a hard look at the state of England military, or lack thereof, just before she sets about getting involved in a series of military expeditions in Europe. Then we'll play a game of Royal Marriage with Prince Charles. We'll explore how the proposed "French match" to the Bourbon Dynasty's Henrietta Maria, may have been Charles' best political option of a bad bunch. But due to a ticking clock and a fatally weak negotiating hand, the royal marriage between Stuart and Bourbon would ultimately help poison, not only Charles' reign, but all of Stuart dynastic history to come.

Ernst von Mansfeld's mercenary army is paralyzed by conflicting orders from England. James directs Mansfeld to the Palatine, while Charles and Buckingham urge him towards Breda. The impasse is broken when the King suddenly falls ill.
Gudrun met Magdalena Gonciarz in Dresden. They sat down in a very quiet Coffeeshop in Dreikönigskirche and talked about their experiences as scientists giving science an image. Magda started Portrait of science in 2016 with two objectives: to show that science is a process with many contributors at all carreer levels and to have a get-away from a demanding PhD-project, to express her creativity and have tangible results. The person who pointed Gudrun in Magda's direction is Lennart Hilbert, a former co-worker of Magda in Dresden who is now working at KIT on Computational Architectures in the Cell Nucleus (he will be a podcast guest very soon). On the Portrait of Science page one can find photographs of people from Dresden's Life Science campus. Apart from the photographs, one can also find their stories. How and why did they become scientists? What do they do, what are they passionate about? Magda invites us: "Forget the tubes and Erlenmeyer flasks. Science is only as good as the people who do it. So sit back, scroll down and get to know them looking through the lens of Magdalena Gonciarz. Have you ever wondered what kind of people scientists are? Would you like to know what are they working on? What drives and motivates them - spending days in the basement without the sun? Portrait of Science project aims at uncovering more about people who contribute to science at all levels - Research Group Leaders, Postdocs, PhD Students, Staff Scientists and Technicians. All of them are vital for progress of scientific research and all of them are passionate people with their own motivations." When she started the Portrait of Science project, Magda challenged herself to take more pictures. She wanted to show the real people behind science and their personality. This was a creative task, quite different from her work as scientist - done with comparably little time. On top of taking the pictures, interviewees were asked to fill out a questionaire to accompany the story told by the photographs. Surprisingly, the stories told by her co-workers turned out to be quite inspiring. The stories told have shown the passion and the diverse motivations. People mentioned their failures as well. There were stories about accidents and their crucial role in carreers, about coincidence of finding a fascinating book or the right mentor - even as far back as in early childhood sometimes. Sharing ups and downs and the experience that there is a light at the end of the tunnel was a story she needed and which was worth to be shared. Knowing how hard scientific work can be, and how multiple friends and colleagues struggled more than she herself, Magda still strongly feels that it is useful to show that this is not a private and unique experience, but probably a part of the life of every scientist. This struggle can be overcome with time, effort, and help. Magda comes from Poland. During her Master's studies, she had an opportunity to do a research placement at the University of Virginia. During that time she felt welcomed as part of a scientific community in which she wanted to stay. It was a natural decision to proceed with a PhD. She applied to the very prestigious Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering and joined the biological research on proteins and their modifications in the lab of Jörg Mansfeld. After finishing her project, she decided to leave academia. Since 2018 she works for a learning and training agency CAST PHARMA and is involved in producing e-Learning solutions for pharmaceutical companies. Magda also talked a bit about her PhD research. As we all know, genes code for proteins. However, one protein can exist in multiple different forms with multiple varying functions. A protein can be post-translationallly modified, i.e., modified after it is created in order to e.g., be relocated, have different interaction partners or become activated or destroyed in a manner of minutes. Recently, modern methods such as mass spectrometry, made it possible to see the multitude of post-translationally modified forms of proteins and allowed further research with the use of biochemistry or imaging techniques to gain insight into functions of these modifications, e.g., at different stages of the cell life. Gudrun and Magda also talked about the challenge to make a broader audience understand what the particular research topic is all about. It is hard to refer to things we cannot see. It is often easier for people with more translatable research to connect it to various diseases, e.g., cancer but still creates a challenge for those working with more basic issues such as developmental biology. What Magda took from her time in academia is much more than her results and her part in the basic research story. She feels that curiosity and quick learning skills are her superpowers. She is able to become familiar with any topic in a short amount of time. She can manage multiple parts of a project. Also she learned resilience and how to deal with challenges and failures on a daily basis, which can prove to be helpful in all areas of life. At the moment, she is still making plans whether to continue the Portrait of Science in the future, maybe in a changed format. Podcasts A. Leßmöllmann: Wissenschaftskommunikation, Gespräch mit G. Wade and Mike continue their Wingin' It series on the life of Martin Luther with a look at his childhood. They explore the question “What was it like to be a kid from Mansfeld”. Wade makes the case that Luther, the Mansfeld kid, was a true Detroiter at heart. Listen in as they paint a picture of Luther’s upbringing in a religious, strict, but loving home in the mining town of Mansfeld in which the poor peasant and proto-capitalist walk down the same streets and sit next to each other in the same pews. 1520 was a big braking point with Luther in his church relations. The Pope did not receive the 95 Theses and explanations well and issued a Papal bull, Exsurge Domine (Arise O Lord) (1520). This warned Luther that if he did not stop he would be excommunicated. Luther took this bull and Canon Law and burned them. He continued to write. The Babylonian Captivity of the Church (1520) covered the sacramental trappings of the church. In 1521 he was summoned before the Diet of Worms and asked to recant. This is where he famously stated, “Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the Pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), for I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience . . . May God help me. Amen.” This was not an argument for being anti-authority nor individualism as the sole arbiter of truth. Luther did not deny the need for authority or submitting to it. After this Diet he was excommunicated and considered a criminal. Luther, aided by a friend, escaped and hid in Wartburg Castle for about a year. During this time he started to translate the New Testament into German. Many were critiquing the church and wanted reform. Luther had a lot of admirers and returned to Wittenberg and began to teach and preach. In 1525 he married Katharina von Bora in the middle of the Peasant’s Revolt. In 1530 we have the Augsburg Confession which crystalized the Lutheran reform as a movement. In 1534 the Bible was published in German which was a huge step in the process of reform. Late in 1545 he was asked to travel to and settle a dispute between the town of Mansfeld and the church. He died there on February 18, 1546 in the exact place he had been born. His life was always devoted to the service of the church. Consider the relationship between Melanchthon and Luther.
