Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Joy: I believe my superpower is a commitment to show up.“Our mission here at the Be the Match is pretty simple. It's to save lives through cellular therapy,” says Joy King, Chief Advancement Officer. “Our vision is equal outcomes for all.”“Every day, we recruit members to our registry. We call it the greatest waiting list in the world,” she says. “We work with patients who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer or blood disorder and need either a bone marrow or a blood stem cell transplant to cure their disease.”There is a surprising and tragic disparity in match finding, she told me before we recorded our session. “If you are a white patient searching for a donor, you have a 79 percent chance of finding that life-saving match. That isn't true if you are an African or Black American. You only have a 29 percent chance of finding a match. A 50 percent gap. It is really hard to live with those numbers.”“It may be the largest disparity that exists in modern medicine,” she said, as we recorded. One strategy Be The Match supports to end the disparity is treatments for people with relatively poor donor matches. The testing began with chemotherapy paired with stem cell therapy from “half-match” family donors. The outcomes were good.Joy explains how extending the model to people without family donors seems to be working:Because over 70 percent of patients don't have a suitable related donor—someone in their family that can donate to them—a little over five years ago, we started a trial to see if this same thing would work in the unrelated donor setting. We consider a perfect match an eight out of eight match. So we were looking at a seven out of eight, six out of eight, and so on and so forth. We started to see that the outcomes for patients who were using a less than eight out of eight donor were similar. The outcomes, the survival rates were similar to those patients that had a perfectly matched donor. We've been getting better and better over time, answering more and more questions. And it won't surprise anyone if you think about it and think about the disparity that I just talked about, that the majority of patients that are benefiting from these trials are patients who are ethnically diverse. So the majority of patients that are participating in this trial and seeing good outcomes are those patients who otherwise wouldn't have an option on the donor registry. So it will completely change our ability to ensure that every patient can receive their life-saving therapy when they need us, which is incredible. As we discussed this work, I wondered about the donor experience. Does it hurt? Finally, I asked. Joy walked us through it:Almost 80 percent of the time—so the majority of the time when a donor donates—it is like a specialized blood donation. So, if you've ever given or seen someone donate plasma, it's very similar. For about a week prior to donation day, our donors receive a medication to boost up their stem cells. Then they go in, and they get an IV in each arm. We take their blood out of one, spin it around in a machine, keep the things we need—their stem cells—and give everything right back to them. And so the procedure takes anywhere from four to eight hours usually, and then the donor is free to go and eat at Chipotle or whatever it is they want to do. Most of our donors that donate that day go right back to work. The small percentage of the time, we still have donors who donate bone marrow, and that is an extraction from your hip. So it is a medical procedure. You're put under anesthesia. Most of our donors would tell you what it feels like after is they're sore. They feel like either if you're from the north, Minnesota, it feels like maybe you fell on the ice or something. Other donors will say it feels like you did a really heavy squat workout—like your muscles are sore like that for a week or so after you donate. So I wouldn't say that it's painless. I've never done it. I've spoken to several donors who would say they would do it over again in a heartbeat. Because of the altruistic people they are, they always say, “What I went through is nothing compared to what the recipient or the patient went through.”Joy brings her superpower to work; she is deeply committed to showing up.AI Podcast Summary* Joy King, Chief Advancement Officer of Be The Match, discusses the organization's mission to save lives through cellular therapy.* They match patients diagnosed with blood cancer or disorders to a living donor on their registry for bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants.* Be The Match aims for equal outcomes for all patients, including through research and engagement with historically Black colleges and universities.* They fundraise and advocate for patients and donors to remove barriers to treatment or donation.* Joy finds her work fulfilling because they are delivering life-saving bone marrow and stem cells to patients in need.* Registering as a bone marrow donor is a simple process that involves a cheek cell sample for DNA typing.* African American potential donors are underrepresented in the registry.* Joy emphasizes the importance of showing up for others and being present to support them.* She shares a personal experience of supporting a colleague through a family tragedy and how her team rallied around him.* Listeners are encouraged to learn more about Be The Match and how they can donate or become a candidate donor. How to Develop a Commitment to Show Up As a SuperpowerJoy describes her superpower for showing up, saying, “Whether that means I'm showing up for my colleagues or my team, my family, a patient, their family, a donor, a benefactor—whatever the case may be—I believe that you only get one chance to show up to really show up.”She shared a story to illustrate what it means to show up:One of my colleagues who was traveling for work with another colleague, a direct report of mine. I got a call at about a little after midnight that there had been an emergency with my colleague's family. I learned that my colleague's baby passed away while they were traveling for work. His wife was home with the baby at the time. That's a call no one obviously wants to receive, but also one as a friend and as a colleague I had never received before. So, you know, you just show up. You do what it is you need to do to get him home, to be sure that he and his wife have what they need to get through a time like this and that he is confident that, at this time, work doesn't matter. What matters most is that he can be where he needs to be and do what it is he needs to do and not have to worry about anything else.Joy shared another story as a metaphor to help us see how to emulate her, to remember to always show up.An individual had cancer and it was terminal. What he talked about was comparing, of all things, life and chances to going to a driving range and how you get a bucket of balls and, as you start swinging, you just hit the ball over and over and over and over again. You really don't think about it until you get down to those very few last balls. Then you really start to concentrate. You really start to pay attention to your form and your breaths and all of the things. The point to that is not to wait till the end to be there. Make sure that you show up. Think about showing up for every opportunity that you have and not just waiting until the end. And yes, it's a silly analogy, a bucket of golf balls, but you get the point, right? You never know when someone needs you to show up. And so if it's just popping your head into someone's office or sending a text or not canceling a coffee date because you're too busy taking a meal to someone who needs it. Whatever the case may be, don't miss the opportunity. With that guidance and Joy's powerful example, you can develop your own ability to show up, potentially making it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJoy King (she/her):Chief Advancement Officer/Executive Director, NMDP/Be The MatchAbout NMDP/Be The Match: Be The Match®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), is a nonprofit organization that's dedicated to helping every patient get the life-saving transplant they need. Steve and Sid Underwood met in 1983 when each was attached to the Field Operations Department of the world's largest working dog registry, the United Kennel Club. Underwood's role as a Field Representative, largely serving the expansive Texas territory, rapidly gained him national attention although his was already a household name among Lone Star State coon hunters. His involvement with coon hunting and particularly Treeing Walkers anchored him deeply, even as a young man, into the bedrock of coon hunting history in that part of the world. He hunted with, or at least found himself in the company of, some of the sport's most significant hounds and the men that hunted them.In this episode, old friends talk about the UKC days, the fascinating aura of the Texas State Championship, and spend a whole lot of time analyzing the way things were and are, now and then.Texas is one of Steve's favorite coon hunting destinations and he spares no effort to share with listeners the fascinating, unique style that is Texas coon hunting, something he first experienced way back in 1969. This one is as comfortable as a well-worn pair of Wranglers and as satisfying as a stop at a Texas crossroads café for chicken-fried steaks. Pour yourself a tall iced tea, settle back and we'll go coon hunting Texas-style with one of the sport's most interesting figures, Sid Underwood. Listeners will also enjoy the debut of weekly podcast visits by storyteller supreme, Fred Moran.

Today, a very special colleague of mine came to the show: Charlie Heineman, CWT. Charlie and I first met when we took the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) Exam in Atlanta back in 2002. To date, Charlie is still an active member of AWT in the CWT and Business Resources committees. With more than 40 years of experience in the water treatment industry, Charlie started his water treatment career with Nalco Chemical Company (Basic Industry Group) as a Field Representative in Wichita, Kansas. After six years, Charlie was selected to start up Nalco's Utility Group in Dallas, Texas. Nalco's Utility Group (Dallas) grew from $100K sales to $4MM sales over the next seven years. In 2001, Charlie founded Precision Water Technologies in Dallas, Texas, and joined AWT in 2002. Charlie became a Certified Water Technologist in 2002. Aside from AWT, he is also a member of BOMA, IREM, and TAFE Associations. A United States Marine Corps veteran and the recipient of the Navy Cross of Gallantry Medal for combat operations in Vietnam, Charlie went back to college after two years of serving. He graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in Education (Biology/Chemistry), and today he is on the show to share lessons he has gleaned over the years in the best industry in the world, industrial water treatment. Bottom line: Charlie Heineman is going to share his career journey starting out, not knowing what a boiler was, to becoming a water treatment business owner. Should you test immediately? Wait 30 minutes, an hour, or several hours? How long does it take the oxidizing biocide to be effective? What's happening to the oxidizing biocide over time within the system? Is it fed at a time of day that makes it easy to test at the appropriate time afterwards? Should you manually initiate a feed so you can test afterwards or not? What do you write in your field service report if you miss the optimal testing window? Take this week to think about the optimal time for testing oxidizing biocides after they are fed. Today’s Scripture reading comes from Matthew 6:14-15, quoting from the NASB: “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Forgiveness is a choice. If my spouse does something that offends me, I can decide to be hurt, to rehearse the offense in my mind and to allow frustration, anger, and unforgiveness to set in. Conversely, if I keep my wits about me and follow Jesus’ instructions, I will choose to forgive and move on. Peter asked, “How often should I forgive?” Not knowing to forgive is not the issue; choosing to forgive hits at the heart of the struggle. Jesus instructs us not to withhold forgiveness, but to freely forgive. What about forgiveness in the workplace? Is forgiveness measured out by good or bad performance? Too many headlines read like this: Commander Jones was relieved of his duties because leaders lost confidence in his ability to effectively lead and perform assigned duties. There is no question leaders have a responsibility to uphold workplace performance standards and maintain good order and discipline. Consequences properly follow violations, but Jesus’ admonition to forgive also pertains to workplace justice. Marginalizing or devaluing one who has erred or denying such a one a path to restoration of workplace fellowship is not Christ’s brand of forgiveness. Leadership fosters growth out of genuine value placed on each person. It is best to let the mind of Christ guide workplace forgiveness and restoration acts. I almost erred by allowing a worker’s prior disciplined misstep to determine whether I would hire this person. A decision not to hire her would have meant that a less qualified person would have been selected for the position. As I asked the person about her previous infraction, she said to me, “At some point someone has to give me a chance.” The fact is, she had suffered the consequences several times over for her mistake, and I was in a position to make her pay once more. Forgiveness is a life restoring, healing act, extended in obedience to Jesus’ teachings and His examples. That hiring decision turned out to be one of my best actions as the worker became a highly responsible top performer. Whether in a personal relationship or in the workplace, Jesus’ admonition to forgive remains. As servant leaders, how we forgive and restore is a mark of obedience to Christ’s commands. // Points to Ponder Over the next week, here are 3 points to ponder during your personal time of reflection or with a small group or mentor. First, turn anger and hot emotions over to God as an expression of godly character and with an earnest desire for the best for others. Second, do what God has instructed and trust Him for the results. Take every thought captive to the knowledge of Christ. Third, exercise responsible leadership by maintaining good order and discipline but refrain from devaluing one who has come under discipline. // Monthly Evaluation It’s time for a quick monthly evaluation. Today’s Scripture reading comes from Deuteronomy 7:22, quoting from the NASB: “The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the wild beasts would grow too numerous for you.” Even if I want to accomplish something, if it is not God’s will, I will not be able to do it. Why would the Lord not allow something that seems a good thing for His people? We most often only perceive what is in front of us, and our tendency is to make decisions based on what we see—the facts. God, on the other hand, has all wisdom, knowledge and understanding and acts according to our best interests, based on more than is apparent to mortal man. The fact that God will act requires faith and trust on the part of those who look to Him for help. As we trust Him, faith and confidence develop—little by little as we wait with patience. God moves on behalf of those who trust Him. Gradually, the mustard seed germinates and develops into a thriving tree. Draconian actions can overwhelm and negate good intentions. Seeds need time to develop just as the enthusiasm of a new Christian should be channeled to outlets of sound spiritual development. Little by little, in God’s time He performs His purposes. Some leaders, thrust into positions of greater responsibility as a reward for a job well done, fizzle in their performance because they lack the wisdom that seasoning and time bring. The route to success is through recognition of the One who is really creating the headway: “The LORD your God will.” God does the heavy lifting. Joshua could not take credit for his victorious army; God fought for Israel. Our best plan should be to cooperate with God in recognition of our mortal limitations: “You will not be able to put an end to them quickly.” Is not our challenge to recognize there is more to matters than what is in front of us? God acts on behalf of those He loves, and He has a wonderful plan for us despite present circumstances. // Points to Ponder Over the next week, here are 3 points to ponder during your personal time of reflection or with a small group or mentor. First, how are you demonstrating cooperation with God in leadership on the job or in the home? Second, do you trust God to work all things for your good in His time? Third, within our flesh, God’s plans are hard to discern; through acts of trust and faith. We come to accept His intentions as good. // About the Narrator Tom Schmidt was raised in a family of nine on a dairy farm in Kansas. Today’s Scripture reading comes from Nehemiah 6:3, quoting from the NASB: “So I sent messengers to them, saying, ‘I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?’” Nehemiah was obviously a man of focus and commitment. It is tough enough working through the routine distractions of a day, not to mention distractions intended to intimidate. Nehemiah, an unknown newcomer, repeatedly responded with clear resolve not to be drawn or distracted from what he came to town to do, which was to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall. Distractions confront us all. Some distractions are a result of task saturation, simply piling more on our plates than we can reasonably handle. Yet other distractions have influence through other means, such as an unshared vision or fear and intimidation as in the case of Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem. Nehemiah models for us how to respond to distractions and intimidation. Five times Nehemiah refused to turn from what he was called to do. His focus was to complete the great work and not to delay its completion. Most people (especially those in the military) can appreciate being the new kid on the block, but note how Nehemiah channels any fear, worry, and anxiety. He cried out and asked God to strengthen him. He took courage and resisted every ploy of his adversaries. It is naive to think that the work we do in the Lord’s name will be received with enthusiasm from everyone. How does one keep focus when distractions and discouragement come? Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Keep focus on the big picture and ask His help. Remind yourself that what you do is for His glory. // Points to Ponder Over the next week, here are 3 points to ponder during your personal time of reflection or with a small group or mentor. First, lack of appreciation by others can lead to untruths about your real effort and motive. It is designed to halt a great work. Second, pray about task saturation that can lead to fixation on the surroundings to the exclusion of the goal. Third, fear and intimidation are a formidable duo. Rely on the sufficiency of God to equip you for the task. Nehemiah and his team completed the wall in 52 days! Fear came upon those who attempted to produce fear in him. Distractions are designed to prevent the great work of God from being completed. Persevere. Have a mind to work. Stay on the wall. // About the Narrator Tom Schmidt was raised in a family of nine on a dairy farm in Kansas. Today’s Scripture reading comes from Exodus 17:16, quoting from the NASB: “And he said, ‘The LORD has sworn; the LORD will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.’” No one desires a persistent enemy. Anyone would be happy for the removal of an irritating thorn in the flesh or for the total eradication of a systemic office problem. The Amalekites may have been a persistent irritation to the Israelites, but who were they to God? They were not a formidable foe for the Lord. For Israel to be in recurring conflict with the Amalekites was certainly better for them than striving against them without the Lord. God’s Word to Moses was that He would utterly destroy the Amalekites. Literally and figuratively, God would be in the battle with Israel against their enemy. While Israel would have preferred a less belligerent journey toward the promised land, they would be comforted in God’s faithful presence. Do you find yourself in a persistently problematic circumstance? The leader’s challenge usually does not end with conquest over one issue before another arrives. In fact, multiple, simultaneous issues often test a leader’s prowess. Our response amid such circumstances should mark us as faithful followers of Christ. Moses availed himself of the help of Aaron and Hur in battling the Amalekites. Jesus accepted the help of Simon from Cyrene in carrying His cross when He was physically overwhelmed. To whom do you turn for help and encouragement when facing a persistent issue? The Amalekites were not Israel’s only enemy, and with the destruction of the Amalekites, God did not cease to be Israel’s “banner.” The point is this: God does not abandon us in the face of weighty circumstances and pressures. Consider God’s prevailing truth and rely on His presence during your times of need for deliverance from nagging circumstances. // Points to Ponder Over the next week, here are 3 points to ponder during your personal time of reflection or with a small group or mentor. First, he gives strength for the battle and rewards courage and skill. Second, he brings faithful people alongside us to help shoulder the burden of our circumstances. Will we strip off pride and accept offers of help? Third, winning a battle does not mean the war is over. Are you confident in God’s promise of His abiding presence as you fulfill your leadership responsibilities? // About the Narrator Tom Schmidt was raised in a family of nine on a dairy farm in Kansas. Millions of Americans begin each year with intentions of getting their financial life in order and making definite plans for their retirement. However, years come and go without much progress in those areas. For many it is the eleventh hour! If you were born between 1946 and 1964, you are one of the 78 million Baby Boomers marching toward retirement.Approximately 10,000 Americans will turn 65 everyday for the next 18 years. Most of these will retire from their jobs yet only about 5% have sufficient retirement funds to maintain their current lifestyle.Although Social Security is intended to only be a ‘supplement’ to retirement income, many Americans depend heavily on their Social Security checks for survival. However, annual reports show both Social Security funds to already be depleted. Are you financially prepared for retirement? Will you have enough income to maintain your present standard of living? What will happen in the likely event that you will not able to draw your full Social Security benefits? The average American will live 27 years after retiring from his/her job. Will your income last as long as you do? Would you like to learn how you can better prepare for the time when you are no longer gainfully employed? Would you like to be able to understand the legal jargon of financial planners and learn how to filter out ‘financial noise’?Would you like to know what ‘Situational Awareness’ is and how it affects you? Would you like to know the difference between sufficiency and surplus?Would you like to know how to protect your investments against inflation, deflation, and taxes? Would you like to know what Capital Sufficiency means? Would you like to know what the "Capital at Camp" model is? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you will want to be sure to join me and my special guest, Ron Cain, Field Representative for Pacific Advisors.
