Five years on from the first Covid lockdown, what can be done to support the 200,000 ‘Lockdown babies' born when lockdown was at its most restrictive, between 23 March and 4 July 2020? These babies have extraordinary young-life stories: Mums giving birth alone; doctors in hazmat suits; babies meeting fathers and grandparents for the first time online; no health visitors; no family cuddles; no baby groups. Now aged four and approaching five, lockdown seems to have had lasting effects on some. What can be done to help? Nuala McGovern is joined by Nicola Botting, Professor of Developmental Disorders at City St George's, University of London and co-lead on The Born in Covid Year – Core Lockdown Effects (BICYCLE) study, Jane Harris, CEO of Speech and Language UK, and mum of three, Frankie Eshun.Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding died of breast cancer in 2021 at the age of 39. Hur påverkar digitaliseringen designprocesser i modeindustrin? "Meditation" — Every time I hear my Mama, Jane Harris, say that word it makes me want to know more about what she means by this. I've gathered my questions and we sat down to have a conversation about meditation and its impact on how we spend time with God. Incidentally, this is her birthday weekend and her life's Scripture is Psalm 27:4, "One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple." I hope you will be as encouraged as I am after listening to this. I'd love to let you know when my children's book, You Can See Him, Little Eyes Looking at a Big God, is available. Visit annanash.net to be notified. The scriptures we mention: Psalm 27:4 (NASB) "One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple." Psalm 1:2,3 (ESV) ...but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Isaiah 26:3 (ESV) You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Romans 10:17 (NKJ) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Psalm 119:165 (NIV) Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.

It has been long overdue getting Jane onto the podcast, but here we are. Jane and Jimmy's story is rooted in the grief for their son, Joshua, who died unexpectedly aged 22 in a motorbike accident whilst travelling in Vietnam.Since then, the breadth of Jane and Jimmy's work is extensive and so moving, all in the name of their son Joshua and to help other bereaved parents and siblings. Jane in this episode offers both a personal and professional perspective to what it is like navigating grief for an older child, whilst also being a therapist. How both Jane and Jimmy knew the importance of community very early on in their grief, especially regarding planning Joshua's funeral. And what it's like raising children whilst grieving for a child too.Jane and Jimmy work tirelessly to support other bereaved families, their retreats are a balm for all those who need them. Grief is a universal experience, but one which affects every individual differently. A grieving person might feel guilty, listless, frightened, or angry. And at a time when they most need support, the bereaved may find other people turning away from them, not really knowing how to talk to them about their feelings and the person they've lost. So how can we learn to better cope with grief in ourselves and in others? In this episode, Ella Rhodes, journalist for The Psychologist, speaks to two experts who are working to help us understand how people process grief and what can be done to support those who are grieving. Grief and death are terrifying words for many of us. Of all the emotions, I've found, we really try to body swerve grief. But the thing is, grief doesn't go away if you ignore it. You can't cheat grief, so in this episode we try to look it in the face and talk about why it's important to start processing it and how you might go about this.I speak with psychotherapist and bereaved mother Jane Harris. I first met Jane, and her photographer and film-maker husband Jimmy Edmunds, almost ten years ago. Their son, Josh, had died in a road accident in Vietnam two years earlier. He was 22.I'd gone to interview Jane and Jimmy for an article I was writing for the Guardian family section on how to organise a different sort of funeral.Despite their pain, they were so generous and meeting them changed me and my approach to death and grief.Jane and Jimmy created the Good Grief Project, a charity dedicated to creative and active approaches to grief. They run some amazing retreats for the bereaved and have made some wonderful films, and written books. You can read all about them here: www.thegoodgriefproject.co.uk where you can also find links to their films: Beyond Goodbye, Say their Name, and the award winning A Love that Never dies.Their next book, When Words are Not Enough - Creative Approaches to Grief is out in November 2022 with an introduction by our very own Dr Kathryn Mannix who spoke so eloquently on the death episode in Series One.Cruse also provides amazing bereavement support. This week Steve is on the Norfolk coastline in the East of England visiting Jane Harris from the Norfolk barbastelle study group. Paston Great Barn dates back to 1581. It's a huge thatched barn made of flint, brick and stone measuring 50 meters in length and about 10 meters wide. Despite it's size, driving south along the coast road it's very easy to miss as you pass its end flint wall and not until you glance in your rear view mirror do you get a feel for the expanse of the structure. Hidden away inside this SSSI and SAC is an important roost of rare barbastelle bats which emerge from the barn at night and either head off down the country lanes or to the cliffs along the beach to forage. Jane and Steve discuss the work done by the research group to discover more about barbastelles in Norfolk as well as this important roost where it all started back in 1996.Norfolk barbastelle study group websiteTheir blog siteA historic newsletter with a timeline of events at Paston barnNorwich Bat Group Social MediaNorfolk Wildlife Trust Social MediaPlease leave us a review if you can, it helps us to reach a wider audience so that we can spread the word about how great bats are.Competition Time! Two of this series future guests, children's authors Angela Mills and Emma Reynolds have kindly donated prizes. "The best and bravest thing that you can do is deal with your own discomfort. And don't ask questions that you don't want to really answer to. If you really want to know, then ask the question. But the most helpful thing for me is people who can tolerate their own discomfort." After losing their son Joshua in a road accident in Vietnam, Jane and Jimmy were thrown into the reality of what all parents know to be their worst nightmare. In this episode they talk to Julian about their journey from before Joshua died, through the initial stages of grief, and how they now are both still learning to live in this reality, and how they are helping others through the many films they have made, the retreats that they run, and through their charity the Good Grief Project. It is hard to live as a bereaved person in our society. We think of grief as something to move past, or to handle, and as Jane and Jimmy mention - bringing grief into day to day life is largely frowned upon. As usual, serving up your deep-fried favorites will be Jane Harris, better known as Mama Jane. She's worked with The Best Around Concessions for more than 35 years. The Cape Coral-based company is owned by the McGrath family, and they have trailers selling everything from turkey legs to corn on the cob. But it's Jane, who manages the funnel cake trailer, who's become a media darling and fried dough virtuoso. Jane lives in Pensacola and travels to fairs across the U.S. and Canada about eight months out of the year. I spoke to Jane as she revved up to hit the Florida State Fair in Tampa. It kicks off today and runs through May 2. In our conversation, Mama Jane shares how to recreate fair food at home, she offers an approximate timeline for when some of your favorite fair foods were likely invented, and we'll brainstorm names for her latest fried creation.Hungry for more? We're delighted to share Ali Benjamin's exclusive reading from The Smash-Up with you! A novel with rather more than a soupçon of satire, this timely book hones in on a snapshot of history to probe the depths of the culture wars in America. Zo is swept up in the politics of the #MeToo movement, the Kavanaugh hearings, and her duties to the feminist activism group she formed: All Them Witches. Ethan finds himself caught between his home life and the battle to get his livewire daughter Alex to sleep. But life is about to get a little more complicated when he receives a panicked message containing accusations against his former business partner, Randy. A slew of them. Suddenly on the wrong side of the narrative, Ethan is forced to question everything as the family slowly fractures under the pressure.  Published by Riverrun and available now in all good bookshops. We strongly encourage you to buy through your local indie bookshop, but if that’s not possible then you can buy a copy through our shop on Bookshop.org. ‘The Smash-Up is an incandescent meteor of a novel, blazing through the preoccupations of our time with wit, originality and compassion. Timely, risky and dazzling.’ Polly Clark, author of Tiger ‘A great page-turner, this book could only have been written now. It made me cry, it made me laugh, it made me think. Every woman should read this book. Every woman, every feminist, every activist. And then, together we should all go and Burn It All Down.’ Jane Harris, author of Orange Prize shortlisted The Observations. Wicklow on January 29th 2020. The documentary itself can be viewed here for £3.99 https://thegoodgriefproject.co.uk/watch-a-love-that-never-dies-now/ How do we grieve? Why do we grieve? And why are we afraid of those that do grieve? Jane Harris and Jimmy Edmonds’ son Josh died nine years ago while travelling in SE Asia. As a way of honouring his memory, they set off on their own road trip across the USA to find out why, in a world where death will always make front page news, real life conversations about death, dying and bereavement are so problematic. Along the way they find other bereaved families with stories of grief that refuse social expectations about moving on or letting go. In a culture that is still uneasy talking about death, dying and bereavement it gives a voice to grief in ways that will move and inspire.

Mama Jane comes to Florida every spring to deal that lethal blow to your New Year's resolution when she sets up shop at the Florida State Fair in Tampa and at Plant City's Florida Strawberry Festival.  Several years ago, she created my favorite fair food of all time... funnel bacon on a stick.  It's been featured on national TV and several big name country music stars have raved about it.  She would take a thick piece of bacon, dip it in funnel cake batter and fry it to a beautiful golden brown.  Then she'd sprinkle powdered sugar and top it with a maple butter drizzle.  It was best breakfast you've ever had on a stick.  Sadly, Funnel Bacon on a Stick was finally retired last year in Plant City.  But not to fear... Mama has some new magic she's made in the lab.  She joined me to tell me all about her plans to carb you up in 2020 at the fairs.

Ep. 9 Jane Harris, psychotherapist, on parental bereavement & the powerful documentary A Love That Never Dies

Shapes Of Grief

In 2011, Jane Harris and Jimmy Edmonds got the knock at the door that no parent ever wants; their 22 year old son Joshua had been killed in a road accident while travelling in Vietnam. From that moment on, their life changed fundamentally, forever. Jane, a psychotherapist & filmmaker and Jimmy, also a filmmaker, embarked on a voyage of active grief during the following years, using their creative backgrounds to explore the new territory of parental bereavement. This lead them on a road trip throughout the U.S., an homage to Joshua who died travelling, to meet other bereaved parents and to try to de-stigmatise the conversations around parental loss. Their documentary “A Love That Never Dies” is a product of their grief journey and a testament to their enduring love for Joshua. It is a ‘much watch’ for anyone who seeks to better understand grief, in any shape. The documentary sold-out to a packed audience in Dublin last week, hosted by the Irish Hospice Foundation. Following the screening, Jane and Jimmy stayed with me for several days in Greystones where we talked love, grief, creativity and sea-swimming. They met with Justin and Beatrice, a local couple who had coincidentally also lost a beloved son Joshua in 2011 and who shares Jimmy’s passion for sea-swimming as an antidote to grief. We also had breakfast with Ruth Fitzmaurice, author of “I Found My Tribe”, a former guest on Shapes Of Grief, where stories of books, documentaries, death and tattoos were shared; an immediate bond found through grief and creativity. Episode 9 of Shapes Of Grief is a beautiful conversation I had with Jane where she shares much of her grief experience, how losing Josh changed her and the many ways their family adapted to their loss. Jane and Jimmy’s work has profoundly touched me and I know that it will continue to support and inspire those who find it. Have you ever pictured what your own funeral will look like? The stock image we're given in films and popular culture has all the mourners dressed in black, facing a coffin at the head of a church or standing around it in a graveyard. But funerals are becoming increasingly diverse, as people move away from the traditional models towards something that is much more bespoke and personalised.  Jane Harris, one of our guests this week, realised that none of the options presented to her for her son Josh's funeral felt right for her and her family. Instead, they decided to do it themselves. Jane talks us through that process, and how her and her husband, Jimmy, were able to turn such a tragic occasion into something positive and meaningful with the film they made about the day. Today, Jane and Jimmy continue to explore grief and bereavement through filmmaking with the Good Grief Project. We also hear from Hasina Zaman, Director of Compassionate Funerals. Hasina set up her funeral business because she wanted her diverse London community to be able to access completely bespoke services that were appropriate for their personal preferences, religions, and cultures.  The message Jane and Hasina have is clear: when it comes to organising a funeral, you can do it your way.  Theme music is by Bernadette Ryan. Sam looks back at his life with his mother Jane and explores some of the main events and funny stories that cultured his growth mindset. He comes away with some great advice for anyone to be a happier and more successful person and lays a great base for guests to come. SHOW NOTES Jane’s Top Tips: Stoicism The practice of resilience and stepping outside your comfort zone and reduce your fear of losing everything and appreciating what you do have. She actually got this from my nan who was a crazy awesome lady and used to send her kids to the neighbours randomly just so they would be okay if for some reason the parents died which I guess is the ultimate resilience for any child. Which is a practice I haven’t really heard of this day and age. Meditation and focus This was a really big one for her. The practice of calming your mind and helping to find focus and peace. and from that Try not to do so many things at once so you can apply more focus to the things that are your priorities and ultimately be more successful as a whole. Remember that often less is more. Test your ideas, the earlier the better Don’t be afraid to start a business at uni if things go tits up your back at home with your parents . and it’s okay to play it safe and try less risky business models that aren’t going to change the world straight away but will help teach you the essentials of launching a business, you can then scale up when you have more time. Basically, think sensibly about what fits your situation the best and then try things that fit the potential market. In general, if you’ve had dreams of running a business but it seems like such a big thing it really not that hard to just start a small side project without sacrificing everything and literally anyone can do it. Jane’s favourite books The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole — Age 13 and 3/4 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/140593218X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=samharris48-21&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=140593218X&linkId=d19b656ecd2d5feb7f1f707ebf6d11d5) Possibly one of my favourite and most memorable books I have ever read. John O'Donoghue's first admission to a psychiatric hospital came when he was 16 years old. He experienced the final days of the huge old asylums like Claybury and Friern Barnet well as ECT, homelessness and prison. He tells Claudia Hammond about how education turned his life around. He's a poet and now teaches creative writing. This year his memoir, Sectioned: A Life Interrupted, scooped the MIND Book of the Year prize. Digital Memories: When family members die, many of us inherit photos and maybe even old love letters. But in the digital age, with huge amounts of data stored on hard drives, servers and even in the cloud, how will our family members make sense of our digital legacy ? Dr Richard Banks and Dr Abigail Sellen from the Microsoft Research Laboratory at Cambridge University talk to Claudia Hammond about technology heirlooms, digital curation and the emotional importance of memories. Mental Illness, fairness and the Work Capability Test: All In the Mind hears from Linda in Carlisle, Cumbria, who suffers from depression, panic attacks and agoraphobia but failed the new, compulsory medical assessment and lost her benefits. Sue Thomson from DACE, Disability Association Carlisle and Eden tells Claudia Hammond how her organisation is overwhelmed by the number of people who've been judged as being fit for work after the controversial new medical, but who want to appeal. And, in the wake of Professor Malcolm Harrington's critical report into the WCA, Jane Harris from Rethink calls for the mass migration of claimants on Incapacity Benefit onto the new benefit to be halted, until the current medical assessment can be judged as being fit for purpose. Producer: Fiona Hill.
