In today's episode we're talking to Anne Margolis - Certified and Licensed Home Birth Midwife, Licensed OB/GYN nurse practitioner, practicing prenatal yogi, home birth expert and creator of HomeSweetHomeBirth.com. Anne believes in a healthy woman's innate ability to give birth normally, naturally and with pleasure despite the challenges. She is devoted to protecting undisturbed physiological labor and birth, and, after our conversation, you'll see that she is a wealth of knowledge and resources! It's really exciting when things you put out into the Universe come together. That's how I feel about this episode. I had been following Anne Margolis of Home Sweet Home Birth for a while. I love the work she does and her influence of empowering women around holistic birth. With over 21 years of experience as a home birth midwife, more certifications than I have fingers, knowledge in all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and not to mention an Instagram following of over 47,000 people, it's safe to say that Anne is a leader in the space of home birth. I knew we had to have her on the show. When we finally connected, it's so easy to see how Anne has touched so many lives. I could sit and listen to her talk for hours. Anne has 4 children: 2 born in a hospital and 2 born at home (in that order). She brings the perspective of not only giving birth in a hospital, but also working in one as an obstetric nurse - an experience which oddly enough created a lot of fear for her around giving birth. When she made the switch to midwifery and eventually opened up her own home birth practice, she describes it like “coming home.” Anne is brilliant, personable and funny. This interview is chock-full of great quotes, tidbits of information and morsels on resources for you all to take advantage of. I say listen to this one with a notepad and pen. Listen, pause and re-listen. It's a great one! Ep 104 Description:  “Women know how to birth their babies, like their bodies know how to breathe and their hearts know how to beat. We just have to get out of its way.” —Anne Many of the words that come to mind when thinking about birth reflect the fear and medicalization perpetuated by modern society. Terms like "painful," "dangerous," and "emergency" portray childbirth as something to be endured or avoided rather than a natural process. This stems from the widespread use of interventions like induction, epidurals, and cesarean section that have stripped birth of its innate beauty and turned it into a clinical event. By challenging these prevalent narratives and embracing midwifery models of care, women can reclaim birth as a profound, empowering life experience rather than something to dread or "survive." This week, we are joined by Anne Margolis, a licensed certified nurse midwife and yoga teacher with over 28 years of experience helping mothers have natural and healing birth experiences. She advocates for a holistic, trauma-sensitive approach to childbirth that empowers women.   Tune in as Debra and Anne discuss the medicalization of childbirth and its impact on women's empowerment and pleasure, the importance of autonomy and trust in the birthing process, the role of midwives in providing emotional support and trauma-sensitive care, the power of a positive mindset during childbirth, and more! Why do a small percentage of planned home births transfer to the hospital?  There are a number of reasons. In today's conversation with our friend Anne Margolis, certified nurse midwife and a powerhouse in the birth world. She has personally helped usher in over 1000 babies into the world. We've had her on the show a few times now and it's always magical to speak with her, because she ends up blowing our minds in some way when it comes to birth. We also discuss the importance of preparation for your home birth, particularly when it comes to preparing your mindset. The typical Western culture and approach to birth is very counterproductive to the experience of laboring and birthing a baby. So we talk about how we can minimize the “googling” and the overanalyzing that keeps us stuck in our heads, out of our bodies and in a fearful place. We also highly recommend that you follow Anne and check out all of her amazing resources for birthing people and parents.  Things we talk about in this episode: home birth to hospital transfer, birth preparation, mindset work, Western culture's approach to birth, first-time birthers and parents Links From the Episode: Anne's website: https://homesweethomebirth.com/ Anne's free mini-course: https://homesweethomebirth.com/gift Anne's Love Your Birth course: https://homesweethomebirth.com/love-your-birth-online-birthing-course Anne's courses (use the code DIAHOME for 10% off!): https://homesweethomebirth.com/my-online-courses   Offers From Our Awesome Partners: Needed: https://bit.ly/2DuMBxP - use code DIAH to get 20% off your order or DIAH100 for $100 off a Complete Plan   More From Doing It At Home: Doing It At Home book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3vJcPmU DIAH Website: https://www.diahpodcast.com/ DIAH Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doingitathome/ DIAH YouTube: https://bit.ly/3pzuzQC DIAH Merch: www.diahpodcast.com/merch Give Back to DIAH: https://bit.ly/3qgm4r9

Anne Margolis is a Certified Nurse Midwife, author, and trauma specialist who has been catching babies for over twenty-seven years. Anne began as a nurse, whose first birth experience ended in a fourth degree episiotomy and vacuum delivery after being told she needed an emergency cesarean because her baby's heart rate was decelerating.  She was so "checked out" due to stress and shock that Anne describes her first birth as an out-of-body experience. Her baby was born with normal APGARs, which immediately refuted her doctor's fetal distress diagnosis, and she was left completely traumatized in the aftermath. This led her to develop a program for birth trauma healing and turn to home birth midwifery practice, where she could put the mother at the center of the decision-making process. She joins us today to share stories of obstetric violence and redemptive births alike, and to discuss how women can shift their mindsets and make the commitment to birth their babies on their terms, no matter where they choose to give birth.Instagram: HomesweethomebirthNatural Birth Secrets: An Insiders Guide on How To Give Birth Holistically, Healthfully and Safely, and Love the Experience! This week on the Mommy Labor Nurse podcast I'm joined by my friend and homebirth midwife, Anne Margolis, from Home Sweet Homebirth! Yeah, we're chatting all about homebirth this week! Homebirth is something I am NOT very familiar with, from a practitioner standpoint - I've only EVER attended hospital births - but I do respect that some women choose home birth as an alternative to birthing in a traditional hospital setting. Because of this, I thought it would be really educational (and fun) to have a homebirth midwife on the podcast to talk to us about some of her experiences and answer some of my questions about home birth! Anne has been in practice for over 25 years as a midwife, so she's really seen it all! Today we talked about home birth prenatal care, water births, hospital transfers, and so much more! You guys are going to love Anne and all she has to say in this episode!

Anne Margolis joins us this week as we're digging into how breath can help with stress on the fertility journey. I know when I was on the fertility journey I wouldn't have said I was stressed. I now know that I experienced chronic stress for years. I always felt tense and anxious (I had TMJ and at one point couldn't even open my mouth to eat). I was very controlling and felt the need to plan everything. I was super impatient and put a lot of pressure on myself to keep going (I didn't even take time to grieve when I received my POF diagnosis) I kept focused on my plan to get pregnant. I didn't tune into what my body was desperately trying to tell me. I felt stuck in my job because what I really wanted was to get pregnant and stay home with my baby…and nothing seemed to be working. I felt frustrated and powerless. I was so guarded. Because I felt if I was vulnerable I wouldn't be able to cope with the anger and sadness. This is all hindsight of course. It is hard to see your own issues when you are stuck in the middle of a struggle. It's taken years of work and self-discovery to ultimately be less hard on myself and give myself some grace. When we cultivate self-awareness we can let our walls down and the healing can begin. Today I'm excited to welcome Anne Margolis to the podcast. Why do a small percentage of planned home births transfer to the hospital?  There are a number of reasons. Today's conversation is with our friend Anne Margolis, a certified nurse midwife and a powerhouse in the birth world. Things we talk about in this episode: home birth to hospital transfer, birth preparation, mindset work, Western culture's approach to birth, first-time birthers and parents Links: Anne's website: https://homesweethomebirth.com/ Anne's free mini-course: https://homesweethomebirth.com/gift Anne's Love Your Birth course: https://homesweethomebirth.com/love-your-birth-online-birthing-course Anne's courses (use the code DIAHOME for 10% off!): https://homesweethomebirth.com/my-online-courses Our website: https://www.diahpodcast.com/ Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3jKtIYv Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diahpodcast/ DIAH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGoKeBfEZ143sWU7V9I5Gdg DIAH Store: https://yoursuccessfulhomebirth.com/ DIAH Merch: https://bit.ly/3qhwgAe  Donate to DIAH: https://bit.ly/3qgm4r9

What makes you who you are? It is a mixture of your soul essence, your spirit -  your physical, mental and emotional self -  along with all of the life experiences that make up your years.  This goes all of the way back to the time in your Mother's womb and your birth. This week, I had Anne Margolis, a holistic certified nurse midwife, Clarity Breathwork practitioner, and yoga teacher on the show to talk about healing your birth story.  This is a fascinating topic that is usually not thought of when we talk about doing the inner work and yet, it is our first experience of life and a very important aspect of self.  The statistics about women's birth experiences are surprising and this is an important conversation we need to be having more often while reflecting on both the stories of our own births and for Mothers, the stories of their child's or children's birth(s). “1/3 of women still today describe their birth as traumatic and that is a lot of women. And 9% of new mothers actually have the symptoms of post traumatic stress, which is a totally normal reaction to some real or perceived very traumatic, scary or bad experience.” – Anne Margolis, CNM, LM, NP, MSN, BSN, RNC With awareness and education these statistics can change.  We must be open to knowing ourselves in deeper ways and be empowered to choose our experience.    I don't think there is any “right way” to birth a baby.  It is only with careful consideration, research and asking within that each individual is empowered to choose their own experience. During this podcast episode, Anne shares some incredible tools for healing your birth story. Last week's take action items was a powerful one!  Did you get a chance to write down any belief, anything or anyone that is holding you back?  Oh boy!  This is huge.  We must look at anything in the way to make sure there is a clear path ahead.   Check out last week's episode to find out more! If you haven't had the chance to download the guided meditation that I have been talking about in the last few episodes, grab it now! All that really matters is a healthy baby. Truer words were never spoken, right? Childbirth is seen as a miracle. A time to rejoice because the love of two fellow human beings has brought a new life to cherish into this world. Unfortunately today, instead of a miracle childbirth is seen as a painful necessity where women are pumped full of drugs and pure oxygen that they have no recollection of the birth even taking place. In fact most women fear childbirth so much that C sections have become common place which denies the child their first and most important influx of bacteria that is present in the vaginal canal. The truth is childbirth need not be an excruciatingly painful episode to fret and fear and to prove this to you I have got Anne Margolis on the show today to talk about exactly how you can make giving birth as stress free as possible. The topic is actually far too large for just one show so what we are going to do is break it down into 2 or 3 shows so we can cover all the bases. In this episode we covered: Anne’s Story Of Abuse & Major Adult Stresses Anne’s Own Experience With 2 Traumatic Birth Experiences How To Give Birth Naturally Without Unnecessary Medical Or Surgical Intervention Anne’s Postpartum Breakdown & Recovery What Really Healed Her & Her Clients How To Love The Experience Of Giving Birth & Let Whatever Unfolds Flow & Much More This show is a must listen for any women who is currently pregnant or who is looking to conceive in the near future. In today's episode we're talking to Anne Margolis - Certified and Licensed Home Birth Midwife, Licensed OB/GYN nurse practitioner, practicing prenatal yogi, home birth expert and creator of HomeSweetHomeBirth.com. Anne believes in a healthy woman’s innate ability to give birth normally, naturally and with pleasure despite the challenges. She is devoted to protecting undisturbed physiological labor and birth, and, after our conversation, you'll see that she is a wealth of knowledge and resources! It’s really exciting when things you put out into the Universe come together. That’s how I feel about this episode. I had been following Anne Margolis of Home Sweet Home Birth for a while. I love the work she does and her influence of empowering women around holistic birth. With over 21 years of experience as a home birth midwife, more certifications than I have fingers, knowledge in all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and not to mention an Instagram following of over 47,000 people, it’s safe to say that Anne is a leader in the space of home birth. I knew we had to have her on the show. When we finally connected, it’s so easy to see how Anne has touched so many lives. It’s a great one!

Anne Margolis is a practicing Midwife in New York who started her career as a labour and delivery nurse. When her first 2 babes were born in hospital, under the threat of caesarean, Anne got a real understanding of how labouring mamas receive maternity care and was inspired to become a licenced midwife.  She went on to birth her next 2 children at home, and is now a dedicated holistic homebirth midwife operating in New York and New Jersey, with extensive qualifications and experience.   Anne is also an aspiring yogi and prenatal and postpartum yoga teacher, a doula, and a childbirth educator, and you are going to love her straight-down-the-line approach to birth. You can find more of Anne's goodness (including the odd yoga headstand!) at her online home homesweethombirth.com and you can become part of her online community at homesweethomebirth on both Facebook and Instagram, where she provides services to women across the globe; for empowered, healthy, joyful living in childbearing & beyond.

Should you have your baby at home, hospital, or birthing center of some sort? It’s a very important question to consider. If you’ve never found yourself pondering this question, perhaps one day you will. I was only a few weeks pregnant when I started to consider my options, I wish now I’d started thinking about it sooner. I needed to find care practitioner for my pregnancy and I knew I wanted a midwife. On a referral from a friend, and eager to have my first appointment, I picked the first one I met, she was lovely, warm, compassionate, grandmotherly, and kind. When I told her I was also considering a birthing center and home birth, and she quickly preyed on the fears I had shared with her and guided me away from those options. Because she was a former home birth midwife, I trusted her opinion on the subject even more. Her experienced guidance was a relief for my worried pregnant brain in those early days. Unfortunately, her advice should have been a red flag. Instead of being concerned about getting to know me and figuring out what was best for me, she lumped me into her practice and stamped me for hospital delivery before I even had enough time to double check the outdated and misguided statistics she’d given me about home birth. A sure sign of her devotion to protecting her relationship to the hospital, not to me. I wish I’d done some more soul searching about what was really important to me before I picked my midwife. I’m even more sure of that now after talking with Anne Margolis. Anne Margolis is a Home Birth midwife with a fabulous practice in New York: Home Sweet Homebirth. Naturally, she feels that home births are a beautiful, healthy, and safe option for all moms. But one of the most important beliefs she holds to is that the mom in question has to feel safe with the place she chooses to have her baby. If she chooses a home birth because she’s pressured into it or feels guilty if she doesn’t, but doesn’t feel safe, she’ll wind up having trouble even in a home environment. The opposite is true as well--a hospital or birthing facility will not be the best place for that woman if she doesn’t feel comfortable and safe. Anne knows… she’s had some difficult experiences of her own to draw from… To say that Anne’s experiences in giving birth to her children were traumatic is to understate the issue. She was an OB nurse practitioner when she had her first two children, so she felt she had a pretty good handle on what to expect and how things would go in the hospital. She had her first child long before she even knew home births were a viable option and during the experience many decisions were made for her without her even being consulted. A pitocin drip, episiotomy, C-section… all of it came barreling toward her, presented as unavoidable decisions. After being rushed into an operating room for an “emergency” C-section, Anne waited for an hour for the surgeon to arrive then decided on her own that she was going to birth her baby… and she did. The fact is that in all of Anne’s in-hospital experiences, things could have been handled very, very differently. At the suggestion of a friend, Anne met with a midwife and discovered that there were other options, and that opened up the door to a brand new world of considerations for her. And luckily, Ann gave birth to two more children in much better circumstances. It was those experiences that were used to nudge her into the role of midwife and a thriving home birth practice. Today, Anne has extensive training and clinical experience in women’s health and maternity care, in both in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings, including water birth. She is skilled at using an integrative approach—one that combines the best of modern medicine with natural, mind-body and other holistic modalities. Anne is a doula and a childbirth educator, and incorporates the art of labor support and teaching into her midwifery practice. She is one of the most passionately dedicated homebirth practitioners I know. Her approach is sensitive, personal, and family centered. She believes that every healthy woman possesses an innate ability to give birth normally and naturally; her body knows what to do. As a result Anne is devoted to protecting undisturbed physiologic labor and birth, and the precious moments after birth when parents are meeting and connecting with their newborn babies for the first time. If you’ve ever considered working with a doula or midwife, or the option of homebirth, you owe it to yourself to listen tot his episode of Paleo Baby. I think you’ll love Anne Margolis’ compassionate, passionate approach to pregnancy, prenatal care and preparation for childbirth, and how she views the birthing process itself..
