Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2025 3:35

Photo by Charlotte Butcher on Unsplash那差别在哪里呢?

While talking with a friend about the ups and downs of making money from writing on the internet, it occurred to me that almost all the support I receive is from people who know me in real life. There are exceptions, of course, but the vast majority of support comes from friends, family and friends of friends and family. As I told my friend, I have found that my only successful marketing strategy has ever been to make friends with people. And truth be told, I tend to think of any supporters I haven't met in real life as friends, too. So…I don't feel like there's anyone there who isn't a friend. There's frost ❅ on the decking outside And despite the cold I find, inside, I feel warm I feel at peace Open heart to receive And still... This has been easy the hardest chapter of my life Not knowing whether to turn left or right A fight between mind and heart Trying to build new foundations that will last From the debris of my past Versions of me that never had the space to breathe Because to feel free I needed to face the darkest parts of me Find a way to meet them with compassion Am I brave? How long will I have to wait for it to all make sense? "You can keep looking over the fence to see if the grass is greener Or you can notice you've already arrived What was once a dream of the mind Is now fully awakened inside" Because it was who I became on the ride With every long stride And small step Every time I leant more into the depths Found resilience through every test I came to feel a little more blessed A little more present Isn't this what I truly wanted? Maybe it was never about the 'things' But the learnings my pursuit of them would bring Or, maybe, what is true Is that it's both Where every note♩ adds to a song So did everything I went through teach me to belong So that when I received what my heart could see Through many waves of serendipity My heart would already be full Because I'd already answered my own call I'd given myself what I, needed first Learnt how to serve Nurse open wounds So that soon, what I'd experience in my life Would only be a reflection of what was first, inside. The earlier segment does not appear to be a "live" recording, and at one point, an organist (with one of those beat-box built in drums) joins them. But after the "thank you speech", it seems that we're hearing a club or bar performance. There's no applause, but there is talking in the background. I guess what I find peculiar about it is that the sender put the "interesting" short wave broadcast right in the middle of the tape, in between highlights of his performance. That strikes me as a weird choice.

SummaryBe a Good Samaritan: Our podcast episode teaches you to care for others more than yourself. Care for Others More Than Yourself: IntroductionThe Good Samaritan is a parable wrapped in timeless wisdom and offers a profound message of how to care for others more than yourself. It is a reminder that when you show compassion and kindness towards others, you're not just uplifting their spirits, you're also fostering a greater sense of humanity within yourself. Being Selfless: An Act of KindnessWhile we journey through our daily routines and busy lives, it's sometimes easy to overlook the value of caring for others more than yourself. In moments of significant choices, we often find ourselves at crossroads — should we choose self-interest or the path of a good Samaritan? The answer isn't always straightforward but the implications are often deeply meaningful. The Ripple Effect: Why Caring for Others More Than Yourself MattersA simple act of kindness, where you care for others more than yourself, sets a domino effect in motion. As you show compassion and generosity, it inspires others to do the same, creating a ripple of goodwill and empathy in your community. Caring for Others More Than Yourself: An Echo of Divine LoveIn Jesus' parable about the Good Samaritan, the essence of God's love is pervasive throughout, suggesting that as we venture to care for others more than ourselves, we're also echoing divine love. It develops the idea that every act of selflessness is nurturing the divine within us. It is God's way of reminding us that his unending care never wanes, and that he treasures the heart that cares for others more than itself. Heartfelt Acts Create ImpactDon't underestimate the power that lies within you to make a change. Acts of kindness, big or small, carry an immense weight. The simple act of taking a moment to care for others more than yourself can inspire a wave of change, uplift spirits, and yes, in some cases, even save lives. So, in a world where you can be anything, be a good Samaritan. Let your acts of love and care be your voice in a world that needs them more than ever. Remember, when you care for others more than yourself, it's not just about changing their world; you're also transforming your own. Now, who wouldn't want that? Reflection Question:How is caring for others more than yourself reflected in your day-to-day life? Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash Key TakeawaysEmphasising the keyword "care for others more than yourself", the parable of the Good Samaritan is a striking reminder of the importance of selfless love in society. It advocates stepping out of our comfort zone to lend a helping hand to those in need around us. Following the path of the Good Samaritan, we learn that to "care for others more than yourself" isn't just a noble action but also a deeply rewarding spiritual experience. Farmers feed us and feed the world. In the current agricultural society, it is crucial to understand how farming can be more sustainable in terms of energy input/output and agroforestry (the use of land, in which trees and shrubs are intentionally integrated into crop and animal farming systems) offers a number of environmental, economic, and social benefits. In this episode, Srinath and Leonie talk to Chiel van Dijk, owner of the Frecklinghof farm in the North of Germany. They talk about what sustainability means for a farm, whether there is such a thing as more or less sustainable, how Frecklinghof came to be, and how Chiel measures the energy output and input of his farm. Chiel talks about Agroforestry, the way it is implemented on his farm in particular, and the advantages and challenges it can bring to farming in general. Chiel emphasises the importance of small farms as the feeders of people, distinguishing them from the large farms that tend to be geared towards animal feed.

We go around our lives hiding much of ourselves from view, 'setting out a stall' that we've learned to set out through all that's happened for us so far. There are gifts behind the face we present to the world, gifts that could be brought for the benefit of many.  But often we run from the very truthfulness about what's peeking out from the shadows, what's waiting in our messy, beautiful selves, because we've assumed that what is hidden is somehow inherently shameful, or because we've not yet felt welcome to bring it. If we had the right kind of safety, the right kind of support, the right kind of conversation, and if we were to be held in relationship with the loving, uncompromising, truthful presence of another, we might find that we could ever more bring our fullness into the world - and that is what coaching (as well as parenting, friendship, community) could be for. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about all of this - hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. Here's our source for this week, written by our friend Kate Van Akin: Where love flows through A prayer / invocation inspired by the PCC 'Y' community May this be a space of welcome A space where you are seen, unmasked and bathed in loving attention. Mine - and your own. May we discover in our time together what is peeking out from the shadows yearning to be noticed. May our space be big enough to hold both the stories you tell about yourself and the truth of your existence. May I see beyond those stories to the unique, wondrous beauty of your soul and may I shine a light on your beauty and your truth while honouring and dignifying all parts of you. May I stand tall in bringing you my observations and offerings starting close in, inviting you two steps further along the tightrope than you may have gone alone. May this be a space where love flows through, and where our hearts can speak to each other freely. by Kate Van Akin Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Join Rick for the 1st episode of the new series KINGDOM COME. What did Jesus really come to do—what was His “mission”? We’ve been told that it’s basically a rescue mission. But our “rescue” is simply the epic fruit of a restored relationship, which is the passion of God. The mission of God, however, has to do with planting the culture of the Trinity in the broken and scarred garden that was once Eden. Jesus focuses, over and over, on bringing the Kingdom of God, His own “culture,” into our reality. So today we’ll explore what that looks like for us in everyday life, through the lens of “Family Traditions.” Rick’s new daily devotional, the Jesus-Centered Daily, is now available! A story for Halloween, written in 2020 Locked down on my own in the East End of London, spending my time walking, alone, around the deserted City, I started thinking about all the ghosts who must haunt the empty buildings, and how they must be getting lonely too. I started wondering how safe it might be to be the lone living person among all these dead. And then I began to think that perhaps I had done enough walking for one day and maybe I'd better go home. Ruritanian tales for Christmas

A story for Halloween, written in 2013 Scarred by a horrifying event in his childhood, William Connelly finds himself returning to his family home, scene of the haunting that has changed his life. Might he discover the truth behind what happened? And might he regret it when he does? Both this story and 'The Treasure' were written to accompany an interactive ghost story for what was then The SciFi Channel in the UK. They were supposed to have been written by a fictional writer, who himself had been scarred by a supernatural experience, and contain clues to the mystery in the show. Ruritanian tales for Christmas

A story for Halloween, written in 2014. When the unexpected Mr T arrives at his house, Sir Christopher Malpleasance does not expect an unravelling of unexpected coincidences, family secrets and grisly death. On a wintry writing 'holiday' with the author Finbar Hawkins, we took a random turn down a country road and found ourselves at Great Chalfont Manor, a 15th century manor house hidden away in the Wiltshire countryside. It seemed so self-contained and I couldn't help but think about the odd family habits that might grow in such undisturbed solitude, and what if one of those habits was murder? A meditation from our weekly online group circle. Like to join us?  Our modern world is designed to help us scratch the itch. Constant notifications from email, social media and phone apps offer temporary pleasure and provide distraction from what is present in our body and mind. In this meditation, we take time to explore sensations and feelings, reaching beyond intial responses for a deeper experience. When we apply intention and attention in this way, it's possible to reach a state of absorption where the mind, curious and engaged in inquiry, is able to focus on its own qualities. This naturally brings relaxation to the body, release of tension, and a calm state of being. Image by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Kegels Can you also relate pelvic diaphragm mechanics to the cue "pretend like you are holding in gas" and when to use that cue? If you cue " hold in gas on the inhale does it activate pelvic floor? Shouldn't you want pelvic floor to activate on the exhale...moving up like a piston with the thoracic diaphragm? Overhead Reaching Also, doesn't incline or overhead encourage pump handle activity. If I have a wide isa with an inhaled pump handle, wouldn't I want to avoid too much of that? Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash Before I coached entrepreneurs, I coached professional athletes and there is a lot of overlap. Here are 10 entrepreneurship lessons that translate from from the world of Pro sports: Manage your energy. Pro athletes know that the most important thing is recovery. In sports, you can't improve unless you give your body time to rest and adapt. Learn to understand your physical body and how it best operates. Understand the aspects that provide you with that fire so that when you need to be on point, you are going to be performing at your highest level. Self experimentation. Study yourself so you know how you perform best. Try different times of day, different foods, technologies, etc. Seek progression. Find the best coaches, design your training around ways to keep getting better. Understand what the next level looks like by looking at the worlds bests. Hiring expert coaches and competitors to highlight the smaller and smaller areas for improvement Make the basics unconscious. Get so good at the basic skills that you don't have to think about them any more Rehearsal. Pros understand what a perfect practice looks like. If you mentally rehearse the perfect stroke, you are going to improve much faster. They place themselves in a situation before it really happens making then comfortable when the situation does happen. Mental toughness. Pros do workouts that are harder than their competition days so they know they will be able to handle the hardest situation Understand your psychology. Notice when you lose focus, notice your self talk, understand your motivation Optimize for the most important output. Define the rules of the game you are playing in life and how to win. You don't have to be the best at everything to win - just key skills in your one sport or your one career output - getting too much muscle can make you run up mountains slower for example Optimize your routine. Patterns, rituals, habits can help get you in the zone, and take care of the things you do over and over. Embrace pressure, challenge, get comfortable with the difficulty Keep the joy. Get to the place where you really love what you are doing. Enjoy mastering something, get back in as to why you were trying to enjoy that thing in the first place. If you don't think you can find that joy, then something is out of alignment

Robert Thurman opens this two part podcast by comparing and contrasting expressions of nonduality and nirvana in Buddhist & Vedantist philosophies. Describing the modern consensus reality that assures individuals of their lack of post-death soul-continuation though secular educational indoctrination, Professor Thurman explains the need to explore the usefulness of the Buddhist teaching of emptiness in order to help people free themselves from the widespread blind faith in (pseudo-)”scientific” nihilism in regards to the ongoing life of the soul, or super-subtle mind-continuum. Includes a close reading of Nāgārjuna‘s “Jewel Garland of Royal Counsel”, a re-telling of a favorite story of the Buddha’s teaching of the gods and his subsequently divine mother residing in the “33 heaven,” and a warning about how a common misunderstanding of emptiness leads certain “guru” figures to lose their spiritual and ethical balance. Second part of this podcast opens with an explanation Vipassana Meditation & the method of Vedic analysis of negation Professor Thurman refers to as the “Neti Neti Processes”. Vedanta also refers to Vedanta Darshana, one of the six systems of Hindu philosophy based on Badarayana’s Brahma Sutras. Brahma-vidya, the sum total of all the truths and laws of the spiritual world, is revealed through the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and other scriptures.” From www.theberkeleyvedanta.org. The Vedanta Society of Berkeley traces its roots to a dedicated group of devotees, who were inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s evocative lectures during his visit to the Bay Area in 1900. Among the devotees, Sarah Fox, her sister Rebecca Fox and Frank Rhodehamel formed a regular Vedanta study and discussion group in Oakland under the tutelage of Cornelius Heijblon (later Swami Atulananda). This convivial, intellectual group was instrumental in propagating the Vedantic movement in the East Bay. LSD, the CIA & the History of Psychedelic Science

In 1938, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann accidentally developed the potent psychedelic LSD, although it would be several years before Hofmann realized what he'd created. During the Cold War, the CIA launched a top-secret mind control project, code-named MKUltra, experimenting with LSD and other psychedelic substances, drugging military personnel, CIA employees, and civilians, often without their consent or even their knowledge. At the same time, the CIA was funding university research on psychedelics, involving scientists like Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson and counterculture luminaries like Ken Kesey and Allen Ginsberg. Although mid-20th Century scientists had seen therapeutic promise in psychedelics, Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, which classified LSD, along with psilocybin, MDMA, and peyote, as Schedule I drugs, defined by the DEA as having “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Joining me in this episode is Dr. Benjamin Breen, Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and author of Tripping on Utopia: Margaret Mead, the Cold War, and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
