Then, as Hungary withdraws from the International Criminal Court this week and Viktor Orban welcomes Benjamin Netanyahu, who's under an ICC arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza, Christiane asks former U.S. ambassador David Pressman, who served there until this year, whether Trump's America is following Hungary's autocratic playbook.

The Munk Debates Podcast
Be it Resolved, the western media has an anti-Israel bias

Within one week of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the BBC received more than 1,500 complaints relating to its coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Criticisms were split almost evenly between those claiming its reporting had been biased against Israel and those saying it was biased in favour of Israel. These disparate interpretations of the media's coverage of the war are not limited to the BBC. Other mainstream media outlets like the New York Times, CNN, and the CBC have faced similar accusations in recent weeks. Israel's supporters argue that activists have infiltrated newsrooms, leading to journalism that is increasingly biased against the party whom many young progressives have deemed the villain in this conflict: Israel. From falsely and prematurely blaming Israel for an attack on a Gaza hospital, to refusing to use the word terrorists to describe Hamas, to trusting information provided to them by Hamas under the pretext of the Gaza Health Ministry, the international press has shown its true colours and cannot be relied upon to deliver unbiased, factual reporting. Others argue that the opposite is true. For decades the western press has ignored the suffering of Palestinians and deemed them less deserving of attention or sympathy due to a colonial, white supremacist way of thinking. Whereas Ukrainians who use violence to resist occupation are depicted as heroes, Palestinians are derided as attackers and terrorists. This dehumanization has made violence towards them more acceptable and has made western media outlets complicit in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians.   Arguing in favour of the resolution is James Kirchick. He's a columnist for Tablet magazine and a writer at large for Air Mail. Arguing against the resolution is Arwa Damon, a former CNN Senior International Correspondent.   SOURCES: Sky News, BBC, Fox News   The host of the Munk Debates is Rudyard Griffiths - @rudyardg.   Tweet your comments about this episode to @munkdebate or comment on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/munkdebates/ To sign up for a weekly email reminder for this podcast, send an email to podcast@munkdebates.com.   To support civil and substantive debate on the big questions of the day, consider becoming a Munk Member at https://munkdebates.com/membership Members receive access to our 10+ year library of great debates in HD video, a free Munk Debates book, newsletter and ticketing privileges at our live events. In November of 2016, Mosul was the epicenter of the intense battle to drive ISIS out of Iraq. CNN reporter Arwa Damon, her cameraman, and an Iraqi security convoy were ambushed and trapped behind ISIS enemy lines. A US Navy SEAL platoon quickly activated to save them. However, as hundreds of ISIS fighters were closing in, the only chance of a rescue was with the assistance of incredibly precise and powerful air strikes. Luckily, embedded with the SEALs that day was our guest: former US Air Force Technical Sergeant Josh Apple. When most people hear about air strikes they think of missiles launched from miles and miles away. However, when Americans are in contact with the enemy, ‘Danger Close' air strikes often turn the tide of the battle. These strikes are not possible without the incredible work of a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), also often referred to as Air Combat Controllers, who are on the ground directing lethal air assets in real-time with remarkable precision. Under-appreciated and under-reported, it is impossible to overstate the critical role JTACs play in US military operations worldwide. When Josh Apple and the SEALs received word that a reporter and her cameraman were being closed in on in urban Mosul, they knew the stakes were enormous. The race to save them was a race against fatal consequences, which likely would have played out in the very public fashion which ISIS prefers. Josh Apple is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for Combat Action. We are honored that he took the time to tell this amazing story and we thank him and all of our Air Combat Controllers for their vital and truly spectacular work. Thanks for listening and don't forget to download, subscribe, rate, and review Heroes Behind Headlines. The Short Box: A Comic Book Podcast Join four lifelong friends for entertaining discussions about comics and culture.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Blue Canary: For Cops By a CopWho approaches the scene first risking their lives for the safety of others? A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Syria's Idlib province. Nearly one million people have been displaced since a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive began in December, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee to ever-shrinking camps along the border with Turkey. Today on Front Burner, we talk to CNN senior correspondent Arwa Damon, who was just in Idlib, about what she saw on the ground. “These are families that have been displaced multiple times,” she tells Jayme. “What makes this time so much more different is that it’s almost as if there is a sense of finality to it … they’re going to reach a point where they can’t run anymore.”

This is a special episode of Sorry Not Sorry, focused entirely on the developing military situation in Iran. It’s such an unnecessary mess—remember that three years ago, we had a working peace and nuclear disarmament treaty with that country. Now, we’re at the brink of war. We take the time to go in-depth into the situation both historically and politically, to help us all understand what’s happening and what we can do about it. Most importantly, we examine the human cost of generations of conflict and war in the region. CNN Senior International Correspondent Arwa Damon joins the show from Istanbul, and Senator Chris Murphy and Congressman Ro Khanna join from Washington. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
