An Garda Síóchána is to honour three Kerry gardaí who helped save a seven-week-old baby’s life. Garda Mark Cushen, Garda Ryan Hill and Garda Eleanor Shiels responded to an emergency call from Donna O’Loughlin from Athea last August when her baby Precious choked and lost consciousness. Garda Cushen and Garda Hill were recipients of last month’s Fexco Kerry Hero Awards on the Kerry Today show.

Donna O’Loughlin says her seven-week-old baby Precious would have died were it not for the intervention of gardaí in Listowel. Last Saturday night, Ms O’Loughlin and her husband Joe were at home in Athea; they had been bottle-feeding Precious, when the infant got into difficulties.

This week Aislinn chats with John Fitz who is one of three owners behind The Lab Method gym based in Athea. The Lab is not just a gym it's a community and the lads have found a niche in the market in everything that they do and you can see that so evidently through their socials. John originally failed his leaving cert but always had this passion for fitness and worked so hard go get to where he is. This didn't come without many struggles as we get deep into the mental battles, missing out on his daughter's first steps, barely seeing his partner, Aoife, and the many challenges and lows that came with getting those highs. The search for an elderly man missing from the Kerry Limerick border was stood down last evening following the discovery of a body. 73-year-old John McSweeney disappeared from his home in Athea on January 6th. Gardaí, the Coast Guard, Civil Defence, other volunteer search organisations, as well as the local community carried out searches for John. Jerry spoke to local councillor Liam Galvin.

The search is continuing today for 73-year-old John McSweeney, who's missing from his home in Athea since Saturday afternoon. He's described as being 5'7" in height, of slim build, bald, and has a missing front tooth. When last seen, John was wearing a black coat, a black peaked cap, and wellington boots. Christy Kelliher of Abbeyfeale Search and Rescue, which is co-ordinating the search operation, thanks the public for their support and appeals for their continued help in the search.

On Friday the 23rd of March, 2006 17 year old Johnny Quaid fell off a roof while collecting his jacket after work from the building site where he was working. Two weeks later, Johnny eventually woke up from a coma in the Mater Hospital with no recollection at all of what had happened. While recovering he quickly learnt that he would never regain the use of his legs as a result of a spinal injury. In part one of this two part podcast Johnny chats about his love of Gaelic football, of going to New York to live the American dream and how he coped with knowing that life was going to be radically different. He chats about his “sick or swim” mentality and the support of family, friends and the community in his home village of Athea in West Limerick. On this weeks programme we are catch up with Pat Higgins from Athea parish who was one of the lay pastoral workers commissioned at the Chrism Mass on April 5th 2023 at St John's Cathedral. Pat shares his experience of discerning the process of applying for the 2 year course and the work ahead as he enters into his formal ministry in the diocese.We have our regular run through the celestial guides for the coming week and of course a reflection on the Sunday  gospel (Matthew 9:36-10:8).

Athea may be a new beginning for James Dutton, but his dance music roots run deep. Half man, half motherboard since he learned to weave a wire as a bairn, Athea speaks the language of technology and bends it to his musical whim.
