In this episode, Ryan Barath, senior editor at golf.com for golf equipment, shares his journey into the world of golf equipment fitting. He discusses his passion for helping golfers understand their equipment and improve their game. Ryan also addresses the common misconception about golf shafts and explains the importance of considering the shaft profile and weight in the fitting process. Additionally, he highlights the need to challenge the notion that better players should always play low spin and low launch clubs. The conversation covers topics such as finding the right golf club, understanding the numbers in club fitting, a day in the life of a golf content creator, covering tour events, interesting setups on tour, pros' equipment choices, driver head choices and golf ball preferences, and fitting tips for average golfers. In this conversation, Ryan Barath emphasizes the importance of learning and being curious throughout the fitting process. He shares his favorite golf clubs of all time and discusses timeless and ageless clubs that still perform well today. Ryan also highlights his favorite clubs from this year and the value of building custom golf clubs. He concludes by emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and invites listeners to connect with him on social media. Takeaways When choosing a golf club, it's important to focus on what works best for you rather than what you think you should play. Understanding the numbers in club fitting, such as spin rates and launch angles, can help golfers make more informed decisions. Being a golf content creator involves a mix of writing, fitting, building, and creating content, with a focus on helping golfers improve their game. Covering tour events requires efficiency and the ability to capture interesting equipment choices and stories from professional golfers. Some professional golfers have unique and interesting setups in their bags, and their choices are often based on what works best for their game. Pros may choose to use previous year's golf balls because they are comfortable with them and have had success. When going for a fitting, it's important to ask questions and understand why certain equipment choices are being recommended. A good fitter will be able to explain the reasoning behind their recommendations and help golfers play better golf. Be curious and embrace the learning process during your fitting to gain a better understanding of your golfing and equipment, leading to improved performance. There are timeless and ageless golf clubs that still perform well today, such as the Ping Answer 2 putter and older Tour Edge fairway woods. Building custom golf clubs allows for personalized specifications and can result in a set of clubs that perfectly suits your game. Continuous learning is essential in the golf industry, and seeking advice and insights from other golfers and fitters can provide valuable knowledge.
When Ryan Barath was 13, he saw an interview where Phil Mickelson described a modulation he made to his 60-degree wedge, to make it better fit the golf course he was competing at that week. Ryan's jaw hit the floor: “you can tinker with golf clubs?!” That immediately inspired a career path as a golf club fitter, builder, and writer focused on the many intricacies of golf equipment. Golf wasn't always a constant for Ryan, though — one afternoon at his local muni, he decided to walk off the course. Now that he's back, he's engaging with the game on a deeper, more spiritual and emotionally vulnerable level. In this session: being buried with a 5 iron, the trip to St Andrews. As the supply-chain crisis escalates, new golf equipment is becoming pricier and harder to get ahold of. So it might be a good time to take an interest in used clubs. Ryan Barath (@rdsbarath), lead content strategist at Tour Experience Golf, is one of the industry's most knowledgeable resources on that subject. Ryan talks with Garrett Morrison about how his golf nerdery started and how the equipment business has changed during his career. In the second half of the episode, Ryan and Garrett give their picks for two sets of used clubs: one that can be had for under $750 total, and another that consists of equipment made before 2005. This exercise allows them to delve deeper into the products, innovations, and trends that have, for better or for worse, shaped 21st-century golf.
APBA Hall of Famer Greg Barath is perhaps the most prolific APBA Football replayer the game has known. Continually refining his method, Greg has been publishing his methods, results and tutorials for more than 15 years on his blog, YouTube and Delphi's Between The Lines forum. Having joined the ranks of the most illustrious names in APBA in 2016's HoF induction ceremony, Barath is tackling a new challenge: Coaching the New England Patriots for the 2021 season of Ohio's venerable National Card Football League. At the time of this interview, the league had just completed its draft, leading Greg to begin contemplating his face-to-face strategy. Meantime, his solitaire play methodology grows in legend; Greg has helped countless players share his passion for the game. But as he's quick to point out, the game is meant to be enjoyed at every player's desired level of complexity: Played basic out of the box or customized to any degree, APBA Football retains its unique place in the universe of board games replicating pro, college (and in some cases, even high school) football. And although relocated to the Pacific Northwest, Greg already had his tickets and hotel reservations for the 2021 annual APBA Convention in Alpharetta. With an odd Thursday match this week Cody, Robert, and Thad have a fresh new podcast covering all things Sporting Kansas City - and Missouri soccer. Saturday's big comeback win over San Jose Earthquakes was a breath of fresh air as we saw glimpses of the SKC team we know and love. But will it actually be the start of something, or will they follow this up with another loss as we've seen several times this season? Graham Smith has established himself as the backup centerback to Besler & Barath, plus Luis Martins had a solid match by not being very noticeable. St. Louis has finally been awarded an MLS team. It has been a long time coming and will mean a lot for soccer in Midwest, the league, and for fans wanting to see a true rivalry. But what might this mean for the expansive Sporting KC Academy? Minnesota United is far from a real rival, as the fans from both teams are as friendly with eachother as humanly possible. Thad is really "peeved" about the late 8:30pm kickoff in the middle of the week. What was MLS thinking? Our old friend Ike Opara will make his way back to Children's Mercy Park as part of the 2nd place team in the West. We talk about his impact on leaving SKC and arriving in Minnesota. We'll also tell you who was training and who is likely to be in Peter Vermes' starting lineup for another important match to keep playoff hopes alive. Learn more about your ad choices.
