In this Delirious WEST 2026 wrap-up episode of the ZenRUN Podcast, I catch up with the incredibly honest and resilient Eve Knudson after her 100-mile adventure through the wild coastline, sand, sleep deprivation and emotional rollercoaster that is Delirious WEST.  This conversation is raw in the best possible way. Eve shares what it was really like tackling the 100-miler after previously completing the 200-mile event - and surprisingly, she found the shorter distance mentally tougher. From brutal Monkey Rocks climbs in the dark, dirt naps on sandy 4WD tracks, painful feet and missing aid station beds… through to emotional moments seeing her kids at Parry Beach and standing silently at Jeff's Tree with Brian… this episode captures the highs, lows and strange beauty of ultra running perfectly.  We also dive into: Why lack of sleep completely changed the experience The mental spiral that Eve couldn't quite shake during the race The huge difference a coach and crew can make in these events Decision fatigue at aid stations Why she now thinks the 200-miler might actually be “easier” than the 100 Her first ever shoey at the finish line

In this Check-In 6 episode of the Delirious WEST 2026 series, I chat with Eve Knudson just two weeks out from the big event. Eve shares how her final training block has gone - including a tough 32km end-to-end where water ran out before the cafe stop, a slow and steady heritage marathon effort, and the deep fatigue that seems to arrive right on cue when taper begins. She talks about testing her full race pack, finding a vest that finally feels like a second skin, and learning that some of the hardest training days are often the most valuable.     We also get into the real stuff that happens this close to race day - tired bodies, overworked brains, little niggles, race planning spreadsheets, drop bags, wet wipes, socks, crew logistics and all the tiny details that suddenly feel very important. Eve shares how training with Brian has helped them learn how to support each other when one of them is low, and why that gives her so much confidence heading into race day.     What I loved most about this chat was Eve's honesty. She's tired, she's ready, and she knows Delirious is going to be hard - but she also knows exactly why she keeps coming back. Community, nature, shared suffering, those magical aid stations, and the joy of seeing people do big brave things all come up in this conversation. And yes… we also talk about the after party, showers, foot washing, and the dream of actually staying awake long enough to enjoy the celebration this time.     This one is such a lovely mix of practical prep, race nerves, humour and heart. If you're deep in your own taper, or just love hearing how ultra runners think in the final stretch before an event, you'll really enjoy this chat. What began as a personal journey to understand her condition evolved into a lifelong commitment to ensuring that no one with LGMD faces that journey alone. From founding the Speak Foundation in an unexpected twist of fate to organizing groundbreaking scientific workshops that bring patients, researchers, industry, and the FDA to the same table, Kat has helped reshape how the LGMD community connects, advocates, and advances research. Guided by the belief that people with lived experience should have the loudest voice in the room, Kat continues to innovate on behalf of a diverse and growing rare disease community.  Last year, when Kaarin Knudson became the mayor of Oregon’s third-largest city, her plan was to revitalize downtown Eugene, build more housing and shrink the city’s roughly $10 million budget gap for the 2025-2027 biennium.    The goalposts haven’t shifted much, except now there’s a growing problem. Knudson says many of her constituents are concerned about federal law enforcement in their communities, especially after a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across Oregon last fall.    Now, Knudson’s mayorship has turned into a balancing act: tackling housing supply, transportation infrastructure and public safety, all with the city’s eyes on Knudson and her office as they navigate ongoing federal uncertainty.    Mayor Knudson joins us to reflect on her first year in office and share how she’s thinking about the road ahead

In this third Delirious WEST 2026 check-in, I catch up with the ever-thoughtful Eve Knudson, and honestly… this is one of those conversations that reminds you why we run. Fresh off the Three Inch race, Eve shares how a day that “wasn't meant to be a big deal” turned into one of those magic runs where everything just clicks — the legs feel good, the pacing makes sense, the fueling works, and suddenly you realise… maybe the training is actually working. We talk about the power of simple consistency, why Eve has stopped getting caught up in Strava comparison, and how doing less (but regularly) is often more than enough when your goal isn't to win — it's to keep showing up and enjoying the process. There's also plenty of real-life honesty: summer heat in WA, holiday routines, mental fatigue, getting lost on trails, strength training avoidance (very relatable), and the logic gymnastics of spending $18 on coffee but hesitating over a gym membership

The framing of the problem is going to determine the solutions. We have to be the people who are framing the problem in a way that allows the solutions to be more connected, more productive, more about advancing into this future together.”

Kaarin Knudson became the mayor of Oregon’s second largest city, Eugene, on Monday. She delivered her first state of the city address shortly after being sworn in. Knudson says increasing housing capacity and revitalizing the city’s downtown are among her top priorities. But first, she faces a budget shortfall and will need to work with the city council to find a way to fill it.  Last year, a proposed municipal fee to address the shortfall drew a lot of public opposition and the council decided not to vote on the issue. Knudson joins us to tell us more about her first official week on the job and her priorities for her term.

Planners have a difficult job. In addition to being experts on their own technical field of planning, they must also understand a variety of other disciplines — like architecture, landscape and ecology to name just a few. These fields are complex in their own right, and planners must consider and translate these concepts for laypeople and elected officials alike. Nico Larco experienced this information overload firsthand and decided to build a resource to compile and contextualize the essential elements of sustainable design. The result was The Sustainable Urban Design Handbook, which he co-authored with Kaarin Knudson. There has long since been a knowledge gap in medical education regarding care of LGBTQIA+ patients. This has manifested itself in health disparities that detrimentally affect the LGBTQIA+ population. This podcast serves as a way to start bridging the gap on order to mitigate the effects of bias, discrimination, and prejudice that queer patients often face in health care. Research has shown that consistent, early exposure in medical education to patients from the queer community has been beneficial in preparing future practitioners for gender inclusive care. We must also do our parts as pediatricians to make sure our queer youth grow into confident, thriving queer adults.  Join Dr. Farrah-Amoy Fullerton, a recent graduate of the pediatric residency program at MCG, and Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. Lisa Leggio, as they introduce LGBTQIA+ health care disparities and describe ways to bridge the gap for eager general practitioners who would like to know more. “I like to say the stars are aligned for open primaries right now,” says South Dakota Open Primaries Director Joe Kirby. “I think there's a realization that closed primaries simply don't make sense when you're in a single party state.” “I also think that Open Primaries will foster a more representative and functional government,” adds De Knudson, former Sioux Falls City Councilor and Co-Director of “Amendment H” - an effort to create a single unified primary of all candidates from which the top two advance to the general election. This 2024 South Dakota measure is more modest than reforms advanced by the same team eight years ago which failed by ten points on Election Day. “We learned a valuable lesson in 2016,” admits Kirby, a business entrepreneur also involved in political reform efforts for three decades. “We tried to do two things at once. We tried to bring open primaries to South Dakota at the same time we tried to remove party labels.”  In this episode, John Opdycke, Founder and President of the national organization Open Primaries, explains why the 2024 crop of non-partisan election reforms is more robust and more diverse.  “Part of what I think is so healthy is that the national groups are saying, Hey, let us show you our research, let us show you what this looks like from up looking down,” says Opdycke, one of the nation's foremost experts on election reform. “And the local people say, great, that's really helpful. Let us show you what our local polling looks like. Let us show you what our political culture looks like.”  For Joe Kirby, De Knudson and many other supporters, Amendment H is an effort to turn away from political extremism and divisiveness and back toward traditional South Dakota values.  “I really love South Dakota,” says Knudson. “I care lots about government. I just knew that I didn't have a choice. I had to give this one more shot, and I really am confident that we will win this on November 5th.” Tune in to find out more about the 2024 South Dakota open primaries initiative– past lessons learned and prospects for passage this year.  This episode is part of our season long series on state level non partisan election reform ballot measures in 2024– from Washington DC to Alaska with numerous states in between– Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, South Dakota, and, next up, Arizona. With a record number of state level reforms this year, stay tuned to see if the stars align in South Dakota and on a national level.    Step into the world of military and civilian medical excellence as we share the stage with Dr. Peggy Knudsen, a leading trauma surgeon whose work bridges these two critical spheres. Her journey from a Minnesota mining town to the front lines of trauma surgery reveals the profound impact of military-civilian partnerships in healthcare. Through stories of her time in Iraq and Germany, Dr. Knudsen unravels the complexities of trauma care and the incredible strides made possible by the collaboration between military-civilian expertise and innovation.    Imagine stepping off a plane and straight into an active war zone as a civilian surgeon. Our latest episode brings that reality to light, showcasing civilian surgeons who volunteered to serve in military hospitals during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Their integration into military teams and the skills honed in the heat of battle are not only harrowing tales of service but also invaluable learning experiences that have reshaped their professional and personal lives. Join us as we examine the rigorous process that prepared these civilians for the battlefield, and the indelible mark it left on their approach to surgery back home. These civilian heroes didn't just bring their expertise to the theater of war; they returned with invaluable insights that have since transformed the landscape of civilian trauma care.     We address the evolving landscape of trauma medicine, where military innovations have found their place in our local hospitals. Dr. Knudsen sheds light on the importance of programs like Stop the Bleed and the pioneering strategies of damage control resuscitation, illustrating the profound influence of military protocols on saving lives in civilian emergencies. As we consider the future readiness of military medical professionals, she eloquently speaks to the importance of ongoing collaboration to maintain a high standard of combat casualty care, ensuring that, even in peacetime, our surgeons are prepared for the realities of war. Her experiences offer a unique lens on the Excelsior Surgical Society's role in nurturing military surgeons' professional development, painting a vivid picture of how these collaborations are pivotal in advancing modern trauma systems.    As we face concerns over a potential decline in deployment experience among military medical personnel, Dr. Knudsen sheds light on collaborative efforts to ensure that the next generation of military surgeons retains the expertise necessary for future combat casualty care. It's an enlightening discussion that solidifies the critical nature of these ongoing partnerships in trauma care.   Chapters: (00:04) Military-Civilian Partnerships in Trauma Care (11:56) Civilian Surgeons in War Zones (24:22) Improving Trauma Care Through Military-Civilian Partnerships (31:42) Military-Civilian Trauma Care Partnerships   Chapter Summaries: (00:04) Military-Civilian Partnerships in Trauma Care Dr. Peggy Knudsen's journey in trauma surgery, her role in pediatric surgery, and the importance of military-civilian partnerships in advancing trauma care.   (11:56) Civilian Surgeons in War Zones Civilian surgeons volunteered in military hospitals during Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, learning from and working with military personnel.   (24:22) Improving Trauma Care Through Military-Civilian Partnerships Military trauma care advancements, tourniquet use, damage control resuscitation, burn care improvements, and preserving surgical skills through partnerships.   (31:42) Military-Civilian Trauma Care Partnerships Firsthand trauma experience, military-civilian partnerships, and readiness of trauma community to respond to large-scale operations.   Take Home Messages: Civilian and military trauma care partnerships are critical for advancing modern trauma systems and ensuring readiness for future conflicts.
