Planet Poet-Words in Space – NEW PODCAST! LISTEN to my WIOX show (originally aired May 7th, 2024) featuring teacher, editor, poet and writer, Nancy Merritt Bell. How do you teach young children to write poetry? Nancy shares her methods and also reads from works she has edited and written specifically for children. The show also features Pamela Manché Pearce, Planet Poet's Poet-at-Large, who brings us Natasha Trethewey's Bellocq's Ophelia. Visit: Sharonisraelpoet.com. Nancy Merritt Bell is the great-great-great- grand-niece of the poet Christopher Smart, and also a writer, book editor and poet. Nancy grew up in the 60's in Athens, Greece, and Tucson, Arizona and then moved to Toronto, Canada. Her two beatnik parents didn't allow her to watch TV, so what better to do but read? Everyone had to recite poems by heart on birthdays and special events, and long car rides – which was often as Canada is a big country and all car rides are long. This came in handy when Nancy studied epic poetry at the University of Toronto and did graduate work at New York University. Nancy underwrote her academic career by successfully working in development on a dozen TV series, including the Emmy-winning Anne of Avonlea, The Odyssey and Degrassi, and writing as many plays, such as The Mean Time at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In 2006, Nancy edited William Loizeaux's prize-winning kids' book WINGS! After moving to Brooklyn, Nancy went on to edit 20 books, including four by her husband, author Michael McKinley, with the most recent one, Diamond Dust, coming out in July. Nancy is currently editing the collected works of the poet Callum Tichenor, and also a collection of children's poetry by Sara Fymme, as well as Sara's chapter book for kids in verse, Invisible Isabel.

In this week's episode of the Get Lit Minute, your weekly poetry podcast, we spotlight the life and work of American poet and spoken-word artist, Natasha Trethewey. A former US poet laureate, Trethewey is the author of five collections of poetry: Monument (2018), Thrall (2012), Native Guard (2006), Bellocq's Ophelia (2002), and Domestic Work (2000). She is also the author of a book of creative non-fiction: Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (2010). Source This episode includes a reading of her poem, “Imperatives for Carrying On in the Aftermath”, featured in our 2021 Get Lit Anthology.“Imperatives for Carrying On in the Aftermath”Do not hang your head or clench your fistswhen even your friend, after hearing the story, says: My mother would never put up with that. Fight the urge to rattle off statistics: that, more often, a woman who chooses to leaveis then murdered. The hundredth time your father says, But she hated violence, why would she marry a guy like that?—don't waste your breath explaining, again, how abusers wait, are patient, that theydon't beat you on the first date, sometimesnot even the first few years of a marriage. Keep an impassive face whenever you hearStand by Your Man, and let go your ragewhen you recall those words were advice given your mother. Try to forget the firsttrial, before she was dead, when the chargewas only attempted murder; don't belabor the thinking or the sentence that allowedher ex-husband's release a year later, orthe juror who said, It's a domestic issue— they should work it out themselves. Justbreathe when, after you read your poemsabout grief, a woman asks: Do you think your mother was weak for men? Learnto ignore subtext. Imagine a thought-cloud above your head, dark and heavy with the words you cannot say; let silencerain down. Remember you were toldby your famous professor, that you should write about something else, unburdenyourself of the death of your mother andjust pour your heart out in the poems. Ask yourself what's in your heart, thatreliquary—blood locket and seed-bed—andcontend with what it means, the folk-saying you learned from a Korean poet in Seoul:that one does not bury the mother's bodyin the ground but in the chest, or—like you— you carry her corpse on your back.Support the show (https://getlit.org/donate/)

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.01.183269v1?rss=1 Authors: Nevoux, J., Alexandru, M., Bellocq, T., Tanaka, L., Hayashi, Y., Watabe, T., Lalou, H., Tani, K., Edge, A. Abstract: Auditory neuropathy is caused by the loss of afferent input to the brainstem via the components of the neural pathway comprising inner hair cells and the first order neurons of the spiral ganglion. Recent work has identified the synapse between cochlear primary afferent neurons and sensory hair cells as a particularly vulnerable component of this pathway. Loss of these synapses due to noise exposure or aging results in the pathology identified as hidden hearing loss, an initial stage of cochlear dysfunction that goes undetected in standard hearing tests. We show here that repulsive axonal guidance molecule a (RGMa) acts to prevent regrowth and synaptogenesis of peripheral auditory nerve fibers with inner hair cells. Treatment of noise-exposed animals with an anti-RGMa blocking antibody regenerated inner hair cell synapses and resulted in recovery of wave-I amplitude of the auditory brainstem response, indicating effective reversal of synaptopathy. Vivir para cantar y cantar para vivir.” Así definió Lito su trabajo,"Vivir para cantarlo", que presentará el sábado 23 de marzo a las 21 hs en Café Vinilo, Gorriti 3780, en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
Hey Y'all, After a brief break to enjoy a wonderful Mardi Gras, we're coming in hot! Our guest this week is Nick Detrich, one of the most celebrated bar professionals in our community. Nick cut his craft cocktai teeth working at multiple Cure Co. projects including Cure, Bellocq, and Cane & Table, where he was a partner. Over the years, Nick has developed a reputation for wanting to have fun with his cocktails and service while also pushing the envelope. This approach to bartending will lend itself well to his newest upcoming project Everywhen. And, if opening one bar wasn't enough, Nick and his partners are also opening a much anticipated Cuban-style bar called Manolito, which could be open as soon as the next could of weeks! With two projects in the pipeline, we definitely appreciate Nick taking the time out to chat with us about what brought him here to New Orleans, his career to date, and a wide variety of subjects. Anywho, check it out and let us know what you think! Thanks as always for listening, and we'll catch you next time. Steve
If you want to know what really goes on at Stein s Deli, Bouligny, Bellocq, Cellar Door, and you want the answer from a chef to the age old question "Do chefs spit in people s food " this show might have everything you re looking for. Then again, everything in this conversation could be a total lie. It s hard to tell. When mixologist, maitre D and film maker Mike Yusko one of our favorite all time guests asked Midnight Menu 1 if he could shoot a scene for his upcoming movie on our show we readily agreed. What follows is Mike shows up with his sidekick, acclaimed chef Wayne Corbett, and buddy Guy Lyman from Guy Lyman Gallery, a neighbor to Bouligny Tavern. The show starts with Mike explaining he s shooting a movie about guys shooting a movie and this scene on Midnight Menu 1 is the characters in the movie appearing on Midnight Menu 1. Except Mike and Wayne and Guy who calls himself Gary in the movie are actually on Midnight Menu 1 in real life as well as in the movie about guys making a movie.
Natasha Trethewey, the 19th United States Poet Laureate (2012-13), is the author of Thrall, Native Guard, for which she won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize, Bellocq’s Ophelia, which was named a Notable Book for 2003 by the American Library Association, and Domestic Work. She is also the author of Beyond Katrina: A Mediation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In his citation, Librarian of Congress James Billington wrote, “Her poems dig beneath the surface of history—personal or communal, from childhood or from a century ago—to explore the human struggles that we all face.” In this keynote address, Trethewey reads from her recent book of poems, Thrall, and discusses how she uses the history of America to inform her work, as well as the stories of her past growing up a mixed-race child in the segregated South. When you grow up on the Bayou you learn to catch and cook pretty much anything that moves. When you get to be Executive Chef at one of New Orleans leading hip restaurants like Tivoli and Lee you can be "influenced" by your childhood roots but you can t totally replicate that cuisine. Chef Marcus Woodham is a product of Bayou Goula but the dishes he creates and serves on Lee Circle are a couple of degrees removed from the squirrel head gumbo his mom makes. Once you ve gotten past the subject of Squirrel Head Gumbo you crack the heads open by "giving them a good whack" with a butter knife by the way you d be forgiven for assuming the rest of the conversation would seem pretty tame. Not on this show. Don t let Kirk Estopinal s suave demeanor fool you. Kirk, as co owner of Cure, Hotel Modern, Bellocq, and Cane and Table, is admittedly a master of craft cocktails, Southern dining, and hospitality. What you might not know about him, and probably until tonight only his wife knew about him, is that Kirk has leanings toward cannibalism. As Chef Marcus said after Kirk explained his yen for eating placenta, "We ve got some catching up to do." When Margo and Ray s guests are not eating cute animals or babies they re working with Margo and Ray on the Dexy s Midnight Runners tribute band.

Take a tea break on this week’s episode of After the Jump as host Grace Bonney is joined by the team behind Bellocq, a unique and evocative line of hand-crafted blends, the finest pure teas and a charming selection of tea accessories. Hear from Michael Shannon, Heidi Johannsen Steward and Scott Stewart who tell listeners the inspiration behind their brand. Hear their vision of opening the artisanal tea experience up to everybody and find out how they developed their immersive brand experience over the years. This program was sponsored by Clarkson Potter Publishers. “We wanted a product that caught your eye immediately – that you wanted to touch. Then, also the tea itself had to be the finest quality tea we could find. It needed to be a complete immerse experience.” [6:00] –Heidi Johannsen Stewart of Bellocq on After the Jump “We’re very much tea people but we’re also about lifestyle. In the tea world, there’s this style of person that only likes tea and we’re not like that. We want to open the experience up to everybody. We try to take all the snobbery out of tea.” [14:00] — Michael Shannon of Bellocq on After the Jump “There’s a slightly slower speed to tea than to coffee. The caffeine effect is more subtle. It guides you into this really relaxed, sharing kind of spirit and I love that about tea.” [17:00] — Scott Stewart of Bellocq on After the Jump
