Interview by Kris PetersIn the little over a decade since Neck Deep formed in the Barlow brothers' spare room in Wrexham, Wales, a lot has changed. From the scrappy, naively hopeful beginnings that define the starting of so many teenage bands, the pop-punks have gone on to be one of British Rock music's most successful global exports in recent memory: top 5 records in both the US and UK, global touring, viral hits and over a billion streams just some of the fruits of ten years spent mastering their craft. For the new self-titled record, the band, completed by Ben's older brother and bassist Seb, guitarists Matt West and Sam Bowden and drummer Matt Powles, took ‘doing their own thing' – and only their own thing – to the next level. Eschewing a keen list of collaborators and producers eager to work with one of rock's hottest properties and choosing, instead, to write and record in their own warehouse space, mere miles from where they grew up. Old school, just like it used to be.This April Australian fans get to taste the excitement, when Neck Deep return for The Dumbstruck Dumbf!*k Tour with special guests Albany New York pop punk act State Champs.HEAVY caught up with Neck Deep vocalist Ben Barlow for an entertaining chat ahead of the tour. It's been a couple of years since their last visit, so we start off by asking what has changed with Neck Deep since then."Not much, I don't think," he measured. "But we're very settled into this record, very settled into playing these songs live now. We're approaching the - or I think we're in the 10-year anniversary year of our seminal breakout record, Life's Not Out To Get You. And so, yeah, doing little bits and bobs with that and just planning ahead for the future still, you know, thinking forward even to the next record. Getting the ball moving with that."Then Barlow was struck with a sudden realization he may have forgotten something important."Oh, actually, what's changed?" he asked me in return. "Bloody hell, I got married this year, which is very nice (laughs)!"In the full interview, we discussed Neck Deep's upcoming tour in Australia, set to begin on April 21, while reflecting on their experiences since their last visit. Ben shared insights into the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of their breakout album Life's Not Out To Get You. He highlighted the band's positive dynamics and their excitement for new music, acknowledging the need to promote their self-titled album while also focusing on future projects. The conversation touched on their writing process, with Ben noting that they prefer to create music at home but are open to inspiration while on the road.We also delved into the song Dumbstruck Dumbfuck, which Ben described as a humorous take on modern masculinity and relationships. They emphasized the high-energy yet sentimental nature of Neck Deep's live performances, expressing enthusiasm about touring with State Champs due to their close friendship and compatible musical styles, and more.Full interview www.youtube.com/@HEAVYmagazineBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

For better or worse, the biologicals space is still in the process of repairing a reputation that was marred by years of over-promising and under-delivering. Yet big advances have been made in recent years, helping improve agricultural productivity while reducing the industry's dependence on chemical pesticides and fertilizers. But discerning between new wave innovation and their more snake-oily predecessors isn't always easy– so we wanted to sit down with an expert who's been doing this work for decades. (Note: if you're new to learning about biologicals, check out “Biologicals: snake oil or science, and how do we know?” before you dive into today's episode for important background.) This week, our guest is Joel Lipsitch, Founder at Blair Road Consulting and an expert in biological products and businesses. Joel guides through his thinking on topics including:The red and green flags he looks for when evaluating biological companies, from the science to pricing modelsHow to expect companies to bridge the gap between the lab and the field, and what it looks like when they succeedThe biological go-to-market strategies that have proven the most successful, and where future business model opportunity is likely emergingUseful Links:Biologicals: snake oil or science, and how do we know? The challenges & opportunities for biologicals in agBiologicals and chemistry: finding ways to commercialize the scienceInvesting Beyond the Farmgate with Ben Barlow, New Edge MicrobialsThe Tricky Business of Scaling Soil Tech - Adam Litle, CEO, Sound AgricultureGenerics, Biologicals, and the Volatile Farm Inputs Market with Sam Taylor, RabobankThe Battle for the Future of Crop ProtectionFor more information and resources, visit our website. The information in this post is not investment advice or a recommendation to invest. Dr. Ben Barlow, Chief Medical Officer of Experity, has identified opportunities to leverage the power of technology in the complex urgent care environment, which requires a wide range of services. To overcome the challenges of long wait times and staffing shortages, Experity is streamlining workflows and making urgent care more efficient and patient-centered. Online scheduling, pre-visit information gathering, and access to existing electronic health records aid clinicians in treatment decisions and post-visit follow-up, resulting in improved delivery of on-demand healthcare services. Ben explains, "We do a lot of different things. I don't think people know what we do in urgent care. We started being an alternative for patients to the emergency department, but now we've evolved into being patient-centered to where the doctor waits on the patient. And so, that's what we do in urgent care. We take care of a lot of different needs of the patients, really dictated on what the patients want us to help them with." "I think that urgent care's strength is that we continue to think about the challenges the patients are experiencing and try to adapt to those challenges. An example is recently, when COVID hit, no one wanted to wait in lobbies. They didn't want to interact with other sick people. So urgent care ramped up its online scheduling, allowing patients to get on a waitlist online and then get texted when it was their time to come in. And so it's those kinds of things that, as challenges arise, the urgent care community is looking to address. Our major challenge right now is looking at the payer system, challenges with reimbursement, labor shortages, and things like that." "We want to think of the patient as not just the interaction that occurs inside the clinic but also before and after because the medical community and the healthcare environment are very complicated to navigate. We feel like urgent care is the front door into the system, so we're continuing to make products and services that help our clients help patients navigate the complexities of the healthcare environment." #Experity #UrgentCare #PatientExperience #Healthcare experityhealth.com Listen to the podcast here

Interview by Kris PetersIn little more than a decade, UK rock outfit Neck Deep have gone from a band rehearsing in a spare bedroom to one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, but you get the feeling despite that the boys still have their feet planted firmly on the ground. For verification of this you need look no further than their upcoming fifth self-titled album which was conceived, recorded, mixed and mastered in a warehouse not far from where things licked off some 12 years ago.Despite literally being offered the opportunity to record pretty much anywhere they wanted, using whoever they wanted, Neck Deep instead set out to deliver an album completely of their own volition which encompassed everything fans love about the band while harking back to the early days where blind ambition was the primary driving force. With the album due out on January 19, HEAVY sat down with frontman Ben Barlow to find out more.We start by asking Ben what this period is like, waiting for the album to be let loose on the public."It's a little nerve-wracking," he admitted, "in the sense that you finish a record, and you put it out to the world and then whatever people think of it is whatever people think of it. We always love what we do, and we always write for us, but it's kind of nerve-wracking thinking the thing you worked so hard on and the thing you poured your heart and soul into is going to be either loved or loather by people. But I think people are gonna love it. It's a little bit of a return to our roots in a lot of ways, and I think fans are gonna love that. We still managed to keep it fresh and have a new element and sound in there, maybe overall a little tighter and a little slicker, so…yeah. I'm not too nervous about it. We've got some big shows coming up that I'm more nervous about. It's weird these days how you put out a record to support touring, rather than the other way around. We've got our biggest headline show ever coming up in the UK, and that's my goal. I'm fully set on that. I wanna sell that out. I know people will love the record, and it will do well, and we're gonna have fun playing it, but to me, I wanna see 10,000 people screaming the words back at me. A few things to look forward to and a few things to be nervous about, but good nerves generally."In the full interview, Ben talks more about the album musically, the singles released so far and how they represent the whole album, how this is a return to roots for Neck Deep, how making the album in their own warehouse impacted the final result, why they decided to make this, their fifth album, self-titled and more.
Host Matt Fisher is joined by Dr. Ben Barlow, Chief Medical Officer at Experity. They discuss the definition of on-demand or urgent care; impact of bringing immediate access into the community; lessons learned for on-demand care from the pandemic; understanding needs of different patient populations; opportunity for technology to drive impactful interactions. You really need to walk through each individual's steps with them which takes quite a bit of time.21:53 - I think a lot of it is just trying to be genuine with them and even if we are not the best company to go for, we don't have all the benefits, but we try to create a good environment that makes it a good experience for them.Contact Your HostsSteve Doyle:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBrad Herda:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBen BarlowLinkedInEmailWebsiteThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
Welcome back to another episode of the Humans of Agriculture podcast. This week we're heading back a couple of weeks and bringing you to the Riverine Plains Innovation Expo on Yorta Yorta country. My Next Guest Is... Ben Barlow. Ben has always been around agriculture, his earliest memories come from being around agriculture and he remembers fondly the importance of hard work from his early years. Upon finishing his university degree, Ben was encouraged to get away from the farm and so he pursued an opportunity to become a bank teller in Mildura, an area that he would go to excel at and have various executive roles both in Australia and in the United States. There was never any doubt that Ben would stay involved in agriculture, he says "It doesn't leave you". His interests have seen him take a small holding of just a couple of thousand acres up to tens of thousands of acres across Western NSW. Ben mentions several mainstream global issues such as carbon, soil fertility, lack of water, lack of arable land and a growing world population as key areas where agriculture intersects with them and can be a solution. On a trip to Israel several years ago, while looking at water technology, Ben came across biologicals and he decided to extend his trip to learn a little more. After arriving back in Australia, he found three companies in the space. Fast forward to today and he has the majority interest and is the Managing Director of New Edge Microbials. So if you want to know more, check out the full episode and if you'd prefer to watch this episode then head to our YouTube Channel.

Biologicals in agriculture have a wildly exciting future. It's a segment responding to innovation in science, changes in markets, and the urgent pressures of adapting to climate change. New startups coming into the space are generating plenty of buzz, but there are also established players with products in the hands of farmers today.Ben Barlow is a veteran executive and the Managing Director of New Edge Microbials, a company that has been supplying farmers with legume inoculants and other biologicals for over 20 years. Growing a business in the biologicals space has been just one more step on Ben's path from his early days as a bank teller with a front-row seat to new opportunities both on and off-farm, and through to expanding his investment thesis to include companies along the value chain globally. While Ben has plenty to share about the realities of corporate agribusiness for founders and executives, his story as a family farmer investing beyond the farmgate has lessons for producers as well.In this episode, Ben shares:How farmers can diversify their portfolio to manage for the seasonality and cyclicality of farm productionTrends in the biologicals market, and what it takes to succeed in a sector with high barriers to entry and costs for R&DWhat it takes for globalized agribusiness to succeed in local markets where people and communities areWhat will be needed for Australia to avoid having a massive disadvantage in biologicals in the coming yearsFor more information and resources, visit our website.

This week I talk to Ben Barlow on the Conservative government's led new obesity strategy which includes: mandating calorie displays on menus, banning junk food adverts before 9pm, offering Weight Watchers discounts and ending discount deals on “unhealthy” foods and also making calories mandatory on food, which reflects the widely held misconception that weight loss can be achieved by restricting calories and fat. We answer questions such as: How do you think the public is reacting to the new strategy? Do you think this new strategy is a bit hypocritical because of eat out help out that also offers Big Mac for £1.60, a box of 20 McNuggets for £3? What do you think the impact of this new initiative will be psychologically?

With technology like telehealth and new billable codes coming forward, are we going to see more telemedicine access from a patient’s home? What are the bias of telehealth? From generational biases to bias from bad telehealth experience, Carrie and Dr. Bluth talk about some of the questions patients and healthcare professionals may have about telehealth. Public Service Announcement: Use telehealth if you have the flu! Don’t get everyone else sick. Carrie and Dr. Bluth speak on how useful and common sense telehealth is, especially during flu season. Are telehealth doctors different in person than during a telehealth visit? What about patients? Dr. Bluth talks about what he sees from behind the screen. How much time is spent taking a telehealth visit vs an in-office visit? Dr. Bluth gives real-life examples of the effortless use of telehealth in his practice. American Family Care, founded back in 1982. now has over 214 clinics in 28 states. Founder, Dr. Irwin, had always envisioned AFC as accessible primary care. How has their model changed over time? Dr. Barlow explains American Family Care’s approach to "unattached patients".When looking at follow-up visits, are telehealth appointments the best way to provide patient convenience? Is it primary care, direct care, proactive care or just good patient care? We ask Dr. Barlow the pending question of the podcast. What’s it like working on the medical team for the White House under President Obama and President Trump? Listen as Dr. Barlow talks about his experience. As always, we ask the panel what is keeping them up at night. How is Dr. Brian Bluth making sure his community gets the care they need?
