Jovelyn Richards and Margo Okazawa-Rey pay tribute to Dr  Bernice Johnson Reagon and listen to clips of her music and talks . Bernice Johnson Reagon (October 4, 1942 – July 16, 2024) was an American song leader, professor of American history, composer, historian, musician, scholar, curator at the Smithsonian, and social activist who, in the early 1960s, was a founding member of the Freedom Singers, organized by the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the Albany Movement for civil rights in Georgia.[1][2] In 1973, she founded the all-black female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, based in Washington, D.C. Reagon, along with other members of the SNCC Freedom Singers, realized the power of collective singing to unify the disparate groups who began to work together in the 1964 Freedom Summer protests in the South.[4] The post Tribute to musician and activist Dr Bernice Johnson Reagon appeared first on KPFA.

Bernice Johnson Reagon, a civil rights activist who co-founded The Freedom Singers and later started the African American vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, died Tuesday at the age of 81. Her daughter, the acclaimed musician Toshi Reagon, shared the news of her mother's passing Wednesday night in a public Facebook post. It is impossible to separate liberation struggles from song. And in the 1960s — at marches, and in jailhouses — the voice leading those songs was often Bernice Johnson Reagon. Her work as a scholar and activist continued throughout her life, in universities and concert halls, at protests and in houses of worship. The future songleader was born in southwest Georgia, the daughter of a Baptist minister. She was admitted to a historically Black public college, Albany State, at the age of 16 and studied music. Albany, Ga., would become an important center of the civil rights movement when the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested there in 1962, causing the media to descend on the town.

Episode 211: Healthy Co-Parenting: Interview with Jae Behrman and Amanda LouderWelcome to the Love Your Story podcast. Today I have an interesting duo. A divorced couple who had 3 children together. After their divorce they needed to heal and grow individually, but they also had to immediately co-parent. This is an important topic, because for children of broken homes, how this co-parenting is done can make a huge difference in how much baggage the children take away, in how secure the children feel with life, even how loved the children feel. I haven't heard someone talk about this before so I'm looking forward to today's conversation. In 2011 Jae and Amanda filed for divorce. Stay tuned to find out why. But more importantly, stay tuned to hear a story of growth and positive co-parenting and what that looks like.  Join the audio for my discussion with Jae and Amanda for the answers to some of these questions: Tell me just a little bit about who each of you are today, then we'll jump backward in time to get your story. Jae - What did you learn about yourself from your first marriage? What have you done to heal and grow? Amanda - What did you learn about yourself? What have you done to heal and grow? Jae - How is Amanda better now? What growth have you seen? Amanda - How is Jae better now? What broth have you seen? Did you always co-parent well together? What does that look like for you guys? When did you make this choice to co-parent carefully and positively and what does it look like to co-parent with someone who has hurt you? Why is co-parenting well so important to our children? Individual thoughts on change, growth, and forgiveness after divorce. I have two quotes I want to share. The first is from Oprah Winfrey. She said, “We can't become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” Our dark days, the break-up of a family, the dissolution of a relationship, especially these times can be wake-up calls, the fast track to growth, if you let it. The second quote is from Bernice Johnson Reagon, She said, “Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are.” Keep creating a story you love through continued growth. Nobody gets it all right the first time. It's a process.  Please share this episode with anyone you think it will support and inspire. You can find all the show notes on our website at http://www.loveyoustorypodcast.com (www.loveyoustorypodcast.com) To contact Amanda Louder: amandalouder.com/blog/podcast See you in two weeks for the next great inspirational episode where stories show us the way forward.

In this episode I discuss one of my favorite acapella women's groups, Sweet Honey in the Rock. I talk about the origins of the group; two of their members, Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon and Dr. Ysaye Barnwell; and why I consider their music to be a window into Black women's impact on struggles for Black freedom and justice. Season 2's first guest is none other than THEE Michaela Harrison! This mermaid-magician-healer had a lot to say in her DEBUT podcast interview, including: -- where she feels most at home, spiritually, physically, and mentally; -- why she's never doubted her own magic and; -- how she went from befriending a squirrel to singing with whales in Brazil. Her bio: Michaela A. Harrison is a Washington, D.C. native whose career is rooted in relaying the healing, transformational power of music through song. She has performed nationally and internationally as a soloist and with various bands and musical collectives. As a resident of New Orleans for over 17 years, Michaela established an enthusiastic following at local venues such as Café Istanbul, Second Vine Wine, and Ashé Cultural Arts Center. Michaela began singing in the Baptist church at age five. Her musical style incorporates her gospel roots as well as a diverse range of genres including jazz, blues, R & B, soul, samba, MPB and African traditional music. As a protégé of Bernice Johnson Reagon, founder of Sweet Honey In The Rock, Michaela is well-versed in spirituals, work songs, and protest music from the Civil Rights era. Her soulful, heartfelt delivery of covers and original music has often moved audiences to tears. Her #TNWIDTakeaway: "When you are in the flow, when you are in surrender, when you are listening for and tuned into the signs and the messages and moving with that, the energy, the resources, the support that are needed for you to do what you came here to do are always there for you." Meditate on Gratefulness Take a few moments to meditate on how great God is. Hasn't He been good to you?  Today, stop down every couple hours to reflect on gratefulness.  God is constantly at work on your behalf.  Take the time to notice His goodness. 2 Corinthians 9:11 says, "Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God."  If every moment is sacred, and If you are amazed and in awe most of the time when you find yourself breathing and not crazy, then you are in a state of constant thankfulness, worship and humility. -Bernice Johnson Reagon

Singer and banjo player Rhiannon Giddens' 2017 album 'Freedom Highway' includes songs based on slave narratives. She notes that the modern banjo draws from the African instrument known as the akonting, which is made from a gourd. "In the first 100 years of its existence, the [American] banjo was known as a plantation instrument, as a black instrument," she says.During the civil rights movement, Bernice Johnson Reagon sang freedom songs from jail, in marches and churches. She was a founding member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee's Freedom Singers in the '60s. She spoke with Terry Gross in 1988 about the songs she sang as an activist.

Hello Runners! How are you? Are you doing ok and getting through this pandemic as best you can? Our lives have changed for sure, and self distancing and self isolation is surely difficult especially since we never experienced anything like this in our lifetime. But we will get through it! Keep the faith. We are fortunate as runners to be able to still go outside and run. There are many runners who are doctors, nurses, police officers, pharmacists and many first responders who are putting their lives on the line to save lives. There are grocery store workers and employees in essential businesses who must work in the general public and are also potentially exposed to the COVID-19 virus. We thank each and every one of you. In this episode, I'm reaching out to the running community. What are you doing to keep your running and fitness up? Is it getting harder to stay motivated? What is your routine? We can motivate each other. I am starting a forum where you can do just that. It is important that we communicate during this time. Go to FeelGoodRunning.com (FeelGoodRunning.com ) and on the main page is a tab to click which gives you the opportunity to record up to a five minute audio message. Let us know what your running routine is like during this pandemic. Feel free to say a few words about what else you are doing to keep yourself busy such as movies or TV shows you are watching, family activities you are doing or even a project you have put off until now. Don't worry about messing up. I will edit pieces out of what you submit and include them in upcoming episodes. If we get good participation, I will get out two episodes a week as we go through this. This is all about you sharing with other runners! These episodes will be about 15 minutes in length. I really hope you will participate and share this with your running friends so they can send a voice message themselves. Let's start something here that is positive, inspiring and motivates us all! When you leave your message, please say your first name and where you are from. Please be safe, wash your hands, wear your mask and stay 6 feet from everyone. Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock®, internationally renowned a cappella ensemble, has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., and in communities of conscience around the world. From Psalm 81:16 comes the promise to a people of being fed by honey out of the rock. Honey – an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock – an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. The metaphor of sweet honey in the rock captures completely these African American women whose repertoire is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere. Following up on their 2008 Grammy-nominated release, Experience…101, Sweet Honey returned to the studio to record Go In Grace, original music composed for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Together these two artistic treasures of the African American experience performed this once-in-a-lifetime collaboration throughout the United States during the 2008-09 season. Equally thrilling was the invitation received from First Lady Michelle Obama in February of 2009 to perform at the White House in celebration of African-American History Month. As the Associated Press reported, “foot-stomping music filled the East Room…” as Sweet Honey sang for 6 and 7 graders from around the city.
