Conan O'Brien's Hosting (3:10) Next, George and Craig explore the role of Conan O'Brien as the host of the night. Known for his sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, Conan was a crowd favorite. The hosts discuss how Conan's comedic timing was the perfect fit for the ceremony, managing to keep the energy high and the atmosphere light-hearted throughout the evening. Conan's ability to make fun of himself while acknowledging the importance of the evening's awards was praised by both George and Craig. They agree that his unique hosting style helped make the 2023 Oscars one of the most entertaining in recent memory.Underwhelming Quincy Jones Tribute (6:30) While the evening was filled with shining moments, not everything landed as hoped. One of the more disappointing moments for both George and Craig was the tribute to legendary producer Quincy Jones. Despite the importance of Jones' legacy in the music industry, the tribute left both critics feeling underwhelmed. The Big Surprise: "Nora" Wins Big (10:00) The night's biggest shock came when the indie film "Nora" swept the major awards. George and Craig highlight the unexpected wins of "Nora" for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, with Sean Baker taking home four Oscars. They both express their astonishment at the film's triumph, noting that "Nora" had not been a frontrunner leading up to the event.Sean Baker's Four Oscar Wins (14:45) In a remarkable turn of events, filmmaker Sean Baker received four Oscar wins for his work on "Nora." Impact of "Nora" on Independent Cinema (18:20) George and Craig continue to explore how "Nora" could potentially change the landscape of independent cinema. They point to the film's success as a sign that the Academy is increasingly leaning towards diverse, contemporary, and unconventional films. The hosts discuss how this trend could benefit smaller films and filmmakers who may not have had a seat at the table in previous years. With the Academy's growing willingness to embrace unconventional storytelling, there is a sense of optimism for the future of films that are often sidelined by the major studios. Shifting Preferences of the Academy (22:00) As the conversation wraps up, George and Craig turn their attention to the shifting preferences of the Academy, which has shown an increasing interest in films that reflect social issues, diverse perspectives, and cutting-edge storytelling techniques. George Peacock, 76, and his wife, Catherine, 73 were creatures of habit. So much so, that when George did not show up at a local convenience store one morning in his hometown of Danbury, Vermont to get the paper, the clerk noticed. He also did not show up for his part time job at the Rutland Travel Lodge on Sunday, September 17, 1989. Friends of the couple were asked to go check their home. What they saw there shocked them. Both George and Catherine were dead, and both had been stabbed multiple times. There was no forced entry into the home so it must have been someone they knew. The couple's three daughters and their husbands were interviewed, and their middle daughter, Penny, had a husband named Michael Luis whose story kept changing for the day of the murders. It would take over 30 years and modern science to finally solve the case of the senseless killings.Show Notes:https://darkdowneast.com/georgecatherinepeacock/
This week, George and Amby discuss the recent Boston and London Marathons--always highlights of the spring running season, and this year was no exception. Both George and Amby were in Boston for the marathon, with Amby running and finishing for the 28th time. They didn't jump over the pond to London for that big event (with 53,000 runners), but followed it closely on streaming services and various Internet coverage. Amby described his Boston run that included too-little training and a too-fast start. You'd think a guy would learn at some point. But he did have an ulterior motive. He also noted that his favorite runner in Boston was little-known Mark Bauman, from Michigan, who reached the Boylston St. finish line for the 55th year in a row. That's a world record for Boston ... or anywhere else. George said he and others were surprised that the men's elite field allowed winner Sisay Lemma to build such a huge lead midway. After all, he had run 2:01:48 in Valencia just 5 months earlier. George also noted that Hellen Obiri has now won 3 major marathons in a row--Boston-New York-Boston--which makes her a definite gold medal threat in the Paris Olympics this summer. The thrilling sprint finish to the women's race in London made George suggest that the Olympic Marathon might be equally as close. Women's marathon racing has become much more competitive in recent years. Amby took the opportunity to point out that his friend Jeannie Rice set yet another World age-group record (75-79) when she clocked a 3:33:27 in London. Rice has now won an age-group title in all 6 World Marathon Majors. George and Amby also discussed everything from runners' church services in Boston, to Dave McGillivray, Meb Keflezighi, CJ Albertson, and Edna Kiplagat's amazing and still-continuing podium conquests in World Marathon Majors races. Hello there, Today Owen Narrates "Lady Audley's Secret" Chapter 2 Written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon Published in the London Journal 1863 We are glad that you found your way over here to the Victorian Periodical Parade. Welcome to the fourth reading of the Cornhill magazine. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature that connects present day folks to the Victorians of 160 years ago. This first reading is chapter of the Mary Elizabeth Braddon novel, "Lady Audley's Secret." The second and third readings are of chapter two. In Chapter 2 we meet George Talboys, and few members of the vessel he is sailing home to England on. He is very impatient to get home to see someone, while another passenger is dreading returning home. This instance shows us that people of every generation were racked with anxiety and worries about the future. Both George and his copassenger are returning home after a time abroad earning money to bring home. Money has also always been a stressor, how can we eat without money? How could we afford our homes without money? Where can we get money. All of these questions are answered in this reading from the Victorian angle. I am excited to narrate something from to those rich, Victorian days gone by. I hope that you all enjoy the next fifteen minutes. Next episode will likely be an interview between myself and our new co-host Daniel Kasper PhD, as we go over The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, written by Robert Stevenson. We have the man that needs no introduction, multiple time world champion, George Digweed MBE and Paul James, director of Gamebore UK on with us to talk about a variety of topics. George has won world championships across 5 decades now, and has amassed more titles than anyone in the history of the sport. Everything that he has won since 1984 has been with Gamebore ammunition! Paul James has been very instrumental on bringing Gamebore to the forefront in clay target sports and no other brand has won more world titles than Gamebore. It only made sense to have both George and Paul on at the same time. The conversation is not strictly about Gamebore though! We cover a variety of topics with both guests and get their opinions. But hold on to your pantyhose! Both George and Paul drop some very big teasers of things to come! Rohini and Angus interview their mentors, George & Linda Pransky. The Pranksys share about how their relationship has evolved over time, and most notably how it changed after they met Syd Banks, the man who first conceptualized the understanding we speak about on this podcast.Linda describes their first year together as volatile and painful. After talking with Syd, they started getting over conflicts in their relationship quicker -- neither of them were taking things as personally anymore. Seeing that they were moving in the right direction together, they could ease up on trying to work to make the relationship better. Taking away this pressure allowed Linda and George to access a light-heartedness, and their fondness for each other increased tenfold. George warmly refers to his fondness for Linda now as "omnipresent fondness" that spans "wall to wall". By this he means there is no gap in his fondness for her, and so there's no longer anything to even not take personally. There's no issue! They are so united that they can both rest and trust in the fact that the other would never purposefully hurt the other. This makes asking for an apology, when necessary, easy. We let the simplicity and warmth of George and Linda's wisdom and love wash over us. We hope you enjoy "hanging out in their living room" as much as we did. This episode explores:The arbitrariness of thoughtIt's ok to disagreeRelationships as a united front transcends the individualsThe hum of fondness The before and after of the Pranksys learning this understandingShow notes:Hair on it: having something on it, in the business world. It's better to not have a hair on it.Mew: To Rohini's surprise, mew is indeed an alternative form of meow. Mew as a noun, is a gull or a place for hiding, as a verb it can refer to the cry of a cat. Meow refers solely to the cry of a cat.Linda Pransky specialized in psycho-social nursing, but grew disillusioned by techniques and approaches that didn't seem to create lasting change for people. After her and George met Sydney Banks in 1976, she saw a way to help people create sustainable change. Dr. George Pransky has taught the principles for over 30 years to individuals, couples, businesses and colleagues -- he is one of the two professional founders of The Principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness and the author of The Relationship Handbook. Both George and Linda serve on the executive committee of the Three Principles Global Community, and continue to pioneer this understanding with new industries and populations. They are both both Partners at Pransky & Associates. Learn more about their work. Bowen passes on an opportunity to make a Terry Maitland reference but proceeds to make one mere moments later. 3 Main Points: Finding and recognizing the dreams, needs, and abilities of all learners. How do we cheer people on and step out of our world to show gratitude and love to make the world better? Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late. Laurie McIntosh and George Couros have an energetic and inspiring conversation about education, "dreams, needs, and abilities" as described by Tom Hierck and reflected on by Laurie in this podcast, and the impact of consistent kindness. The two also talk about Laurie's upcoming book, Teachers These Days which she co-writes with Jody Carrington! Both George and Laurie are currently residing in Alberta, Canada, so the two talk about education in their province and even hold a fun side conversation about hockey rivalries! One of the most powerful stories that Laurie shares in this podcast and in her upcoming book is one she experienced with a co-worker and how she recognized the different ways that people show appreciation, especially when we are consistent with our kindness over extended periods of time. Laurie acknowledges that she is limited on energy at times and shares the very real exhaustion that she feels, she also shares how she continues to be kind, present, and mindful despite that exhaustion. Listen to the end to hear what George says that actually brings Laurie to tears (payback for when she made George cry on a plane)! This is the pilot episode of our new sidecar project Biopsy! Our new show format recaps BioPics in a loose, funny way and we'll drop occasional episodes into your regular Sup Doc feed.We think BioPics are the real life version of our game Cast This Doc. We hope you enjoy it and let us know what Bi-OP-Pics you want us to cover. On the premiere episode we look at Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019) about the life and music of Elton John. Yes THAT Elton John. Both George and Paco agree that Rocketman is a formulaic, paint-by-numbers biopic. One glaring problem was that the musical numbers are not in order of when the songs were released. Rocketman begins oddly at a moment of a huge crossroad in Elton's career, then backtracks to show us how he ended up there—a narrative device that already was a cliché when “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” parodied it back in 2007. Taron Egerton does an admirable job with what he's given.Paco and George also talk about how Rocketman is seemingly prepackaged for the Broadway stage, packed with Elton John hits you’ve known and maybe loved for decades. And of course what self-respecting biopic would not have plenty of montages: the obligatory scenes of Elton hits rising up the charts and racking up, all the gold records and the sex and drugs that go along with the rock ‘n’ roll.Correction: Not Bernie Maupin nor Armistead Maupin but Bennie Maupin and he's not a piano player but a reed player.
Both George and Tom have ugly run ins with federal authorities, unexpected remodeling, plus some wonderful visits from the past. Tom's Lunar truther act makes George channel Buzz Aldrin and throw some verbal haymakers. Sadly, everyone is sober.
Fifty years ago, the winter of discontent had subsided a bit and spring was around the corner. Both George and Ringo expressed positive vibes to interviewers concerning the future of the band while work on the "Get Back" acetate proceeded. Meanwhile, greenery was sprouting (and getting some arrested), while the fancy of two young men in particular turned to love.

“I Need You” was recorded on February 15th at EMI Studio Two. Both George and John played acoustic guitar, Paul played bass and Ringo played drums. Five takes of the song were recorded before everyone was satisfied, “take five” being deemed as best. This ended the night at 10:30. The next day, February 16th, 1965, they recorded all of the overdubs to “I Need You.” First on the agenda was for George to record his lead vocals and then double-track them. The double-tracked take also included Paul harmonizing with George on the last phrase of each verse, which usually was the phrase “I need you.” However, at the end of the second verse, the words were “you told me,” which Paul hesitated on, no doubt, because he was unsure of what the words were. John and Paul then overdubbed background "aahs" during parts of the verses as well as the bridges. Another important overdub occurred next, which was George’s lead guitar work throughout the song. He used a foot-controlled tone pedal which was hooked up to the volume of the guitar. (This devise would be more commonly used as a wah-wah pedal very soon afterward by various artists.) Finally, Ringo tapped out a beat on a cowbell during the bridges. Seeing all this effort spent on "I Need You", it is disappointing to hear how poor the finished track sounds. George sings off-key in several places, the Aah's of Paul and John sound as if they were very tired, there are no typical George fills etc. And there's no guitar solo (while George could play them so well). I ascribe this lacklustre production to George Martin, who - I suspect - focussed on the Lennon-McCartney songs (who produced the hit singles) and dedicated a minimum effort to the second Harrisong ever recorded. Room for improvement: added strings and horns to the backing track, slowed the whole thing down a bit, re-pitched the vocals. And added a BDJ solo, recorded in 2 takes, Take 2 being deemed 'best'.
The smell as they approached the dragon's den was horrible. George and the princess put George's shield near the sleeping dragon's head to protect themselves from the dragon's fiery snores. They watched the grains of sand fall every second. Suddenly the dragon woke up. Now, Sabra thought, surely the dragon would find them before the sand finished running through the hourglass. The dragon stood up and rubbed his eyes. As soon as the last grain of sand ran through the hourglass, the dragon yawned a great fiery yawn. "Now George!" Sabra shouted. George threw the hourglass up into the dragon's mouth. It shattered on its tongue into a cloud of icy mist. Now our two heroes had made the beast furious. He looked down to see them. Both George and Sabra hid behind the shield. The dragon took a breath to blow fire at them. But, because of the hourglass, only cool ice and soft snow came from the dragon's mouth. It took another deep breath, but the hermit's magic had changed the dragon. His mouth shut tight with ice. He quickly jumped into the warm lake with a huge splash, for his whole body was beginning to freeze. George and Sabra had saved the kingdom. It was Sabra who was the second knight that the old hermit had spoken of. The two returned to the castle to cries of joy and triumph. The grateful people of Silene were no longer prisoners in their own kingdom. The king offered George all he had in thanks, but George didn't want any payment. "I have many more adventures left to face," George told the people. "They are my greatest reward." George shared the story of the dragon of Silene to everyone on his journey. And it is still told today as an example of bravery. That is how George, the brave knight from the land of the fairies, earned his sainthood. // //
