Brandon Farbstein was born with a very rare form of dwarfism, and as a high-school student was a victim of vicious bullying. Today, at 19, Brandon is an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, author, and Generation Z activist.
Diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism called metatropic dysplasia, Brandon Farbstein was on the verge of ending his life at age 11. His suicide attempt was partly influenced by the bullying he experienced. But in spite of the emotional and physical turmoil he suffered since childhood, Brandon boldly used his voice and helped two pieces of legislation get signed into state law in Virginia. According to a 2019 UN study, each month almost one in three students globally is bullied. And in the US, youth suicide rates increased 56% between 2000 to 2017. In this episode, we look into causes and insights on bullying, cyberbullying, and their relation to youth suicide. We dive into the lack of legal and policy frameworks to prevent bullying in the United States and in other countries, as well as the role we can play in ending this epidemic. Featuring policy insights and advocacy insights from experts: Elly Stout, Director at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center at EDC, and Ilann Maazel, Partner at Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP. -- This episode is made possible with the support of Vodafone Americas Foundation. SUMMARY Brandon is a TEDx Speaker, Empowerment Coach, activist and the author of the book Ten Feet Tall. And he’s achieved all of that at just the age of 19.
Do you struggle with adversity? Do you feel like you are out of control over your circumstances, and the events that happen in your life? If so, you are not alone. The age of social media often causes us to play the comparison game which forces us into a dark place where we start to just pretend to be someone we are not in order to look better to the outside world. Listen to the podcast HERE In this episode I talk with Brandon Farbstein who at the age of two was diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism. For much of his childhood he felt out of place and lost until he found his place on a Tedx stage. He now hope to inspire people to see the world through a different lens. He believes that adversity and the difficult things that happen in our life can bring us to amazing new things if we switch our mentality away from the negativity. Questions I asked: How did you rise above your adversity? What steps can you take today to move forward. How do you focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t do. How do you surround yourself with the right people? Topics Discussed: How to overcome adversity. How to move forward. Finding the good in everything. Surrounding yourself with people who lift you up. Quotes from the show: “You choose your own solution.” @BrandonFarbstein @LindaMitchell “Our pain is either a lesson or a blessing in disguise.” @BrandonFarbstein @LindaMitchell “We can be what someone is looking for.” @BrandonFarbstein @LindaMitchell “The secret to living is giving.” @BrandonFarbstein @LindaMitchell “Be deliberate with those who fill your mind. @BrandonFarbstein @LindaMitchell How you can stay in touch with Brandon: Website Facebook Instagram Get His Book Twitter How you can stay in touch with Linda: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest YouTube SoundCloud "Proud Sponsors of the Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T" Essential Formulas Giovannicosmetics.com My daily energy stems from mushrooms... mushroom coffee that is!
